He is impossible to understand and the class gets worse as you go. He teaches speech and can't speak himself. Do not take. He is horrible!
He is impossible to understand. You never know what he wants and does not give clear instructions. DO NOT TAKE HIM......
True, he is sometimes difficult to understand and sometimes his directions lack clarity. But he was very nice and always helpful. You will only give 2 four/five minute speeches and take one test. it is an easy course if you do the work required. overall i think he is a good teacher.
The important stuff in the class could be covered in two weeks, but is spread over a semester. Easy grade for the class, but is WAY too into the subject, and tends to grade assignments very inconsistently. If you can put forth just a bit of effort and force yourself to come to class, you'll be fine.
I liked the guy alot. He tried very hard to keep his self on the students level. Never asked too much. We only had to give TWO EASY, mercifully short speeches on anything we wanted. I recommend him over anyone ANYDAY. He's from Chinese/Japanese/Seattle with a British accent. HOW COOL!
this class was quite easy, with only one test, 2 speeches, and five journals. he grades very hard but wants to give everyone a's if they try. he is really into the topic and can get off subject. can be quite difficult to understand, but it doesnt matter anyway because there is only one test!
It's true that he is hard to understand, but all you have to do is ask him what he wants and he will clarify. He'll keep answering questions as long as you ask. His tests are reall easy if you study. This class should be an easy A.
The class is ok. I have always done well with speaking until I got in his class.
Ding is not that bad of a teacher. Easy A. Sit up front and you can understand him fine. 3 quizzes and 2 speeches... how can you beat that? And you can talk him into giving extra credit if you need it.
Ding is a very concerned teacher. He wants you to actually put some effort into his class, but that doesn't mean that it is hard. If you study for the quizzes and put minimal effort into your speech, this class should be an A, no problem. He will answer questions all day long, so keep asking them if you are confused. Overall, good professor.
He is very hard to understand. Talks about nonsense the whole classtime. Grades extremely hard on your speeches. Expects you to MEMORIZE your entire speech which is at least 5 minutes long. Grades your journals very strict and I don't care what people say. HE DOES NOT CARE! Basically told me that my speech was awful!
Watch out. He has a Ph.D., yet he cannot project his voice, he cannot spell a great number of english words, and he cannot speak or write with correct grammar. The course material itself is a breeze (no thanks to him), but I'd say avoid him. A nominal combination of absences and tardies means IMMEDIATE FAILURE.
He is a HORRIBLE teacher, he stutters, can't spell, can't really even speak english, yet he's still an effin speech teacher! Don't take him, he might cost me my lottery scholarship, so don't let it happen to you! He's so unclear as to what he wants from an assignment. HORRIBLE TEACHER! AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!! just my opinion...
I am disgusted by those sluggards/losers who are not able to meet the challenge and then blame everything on their professors. Dr. Ding speaks perfect British English (not your bloody, uneducated southern drawal)! Great teacher!
This class is in fact very fun. lots of videos. very interactive. if you want to learn how to give a formal speech, take him. Not recommended for sluggards!
Honestly, his class is not that great. Everytime I gave a speech it was wrong. I had him a year ago, and for a while I was afraid to even open my mouth in public. I am now just getting to were I can talk in front of people again without worrying.
Professor Ding rocks. I found him to be helpful, caring, kind and considerate. He is looking for organization and rhetorical devices in your speech. Show him you care and he will be a wonderful ally, goof off and you'll get what you get!
Dr. Ding is a wonderful professor. Very kind and fair.
He is cool. Just do your work.
I was scared to go into speech class. The first one sucked. But if you talk to him, he will help you make something he likes out of your material. He likes funny stuff and random topics. I gave a speech on three random items and connected them and he loved it. I really liked it. HAVE TO GO TO CLASS, though. Quizzes and tests are simple
Dr. Ding is a fascinating teacher. He has a depth of knowledge about a variety of subjects in addition to communications. He is extremely poetic; he is also a nice human being.
I really learned a lot from his class. Very passionate.
Ding is definately not the person I want teaching me how to speak when he can barely speak himself. He is incredibly hard to understand and has extremely boring and repetitive lectures. He is also kind of psychotic about things being done his way. When he says a speech has to be 607 words... it better be!
When you find a professor hard to understand, there are two possibilities: 1. The professor is hard to understand for everybody, including you; 2. You are incapable of understanding (either because you are intellectually underdeveloped, or chronically distracted). Find a mirror, look at yourself in it, and do some self-examination.
Ding was very helpful! I was nervous about taking speech, but he made it easier. His lectures were kind of boring, but I loved his accent. Take him if possible, only 3 speeches required, and then you read some but they're pretty interesting!
Very good professor!! I was very nervous about speaking in front of a class, but he graded pretty easy on the speeches. Very helpful. Hard to understand sometimes but very good professor.
Great teacher. He is NOT hard to understand. Very lenient with assignments and very helpful. Would take again.
Honestly, he's lectures bored me most days, but sometimes he'd start on a topic and be so into it himself that he got me to be interested. He gives sufficient time to prepare for the three speeches over the course of the semester. We didn't use our book AT ALL. Memorize your speeches and you'll be sure to get an A.
Dr. Ding is great guy. He isn't hard to understand, and he's pretty helpful. We had 4 speeches. He's pretty tough, though. You have to put a lot of work into his class. He's a tough grader, so be sure to memorize your speeches. Don't buy the book! I never bought it and I never needed it.
Very easy class with very easy grading style. If you can write the outline and stand up in the front, you'll pass with flying colors. He does ramble on though, but we still get out early 95% of the time (sometimes a 3 hour class only takes 30 minutes!) Horray Dr. Ding!
Dr. Ding was a helpful teacher, but sometimes he was hard to understand. The lectures just seem to be the same thing over and over again. The class was okay.
Go to class. Don't buy the book. Try hard and you will do good. You can't pull any crap over this guy. He sees when you are genuine. Don't put speeches off until the last minute. He can tell. You will get out what you put in. Work hard and guaranteed A or B.
For a beginner speech class, he sure made it hard. He was completely unable to explain how to structure a speech. Anyone who did Forensics in high school could explain it better than he did. He will ramble a lot. On the bright side, he's friendly and listens when people have questions and will answer them VERY thoroughly... always... <_<
I dreaded taking speech, but Dr. Ding made it fun. He's one of the best professors at TTU. Want to know the recipe for an A in this class? Attend regularly, memorize your speeches, write a good outline, and if he offers extra credit, do it. Show him you're trying--he wants to see students improve because he knows they can.
Making speeches is no easy job. However, I think this is one of the most important tasks in the real world. I GAINED MUCH EXPERIENCE AND CONFIDENCE IN THIS CLASS. You cannot say much in 350 letters, but Dr. Ding was a WONDERFUL professor. He will grant you with an A if you show full effort. I am sure this is the best class of all PC/SPCH. TAKE HIM
He is a good teacher. It sometimes gets hard to understand what he is saying though. You have to come to class! He grades weird. If you do well on your speeches and turn them in on time you will do well.
Dr. Ding is an amazing teacher, he doesn't care for bs but if you go to class and really pay attention and put forth 80% effort you will pass. If you are someone who waits til the last min though DO NOT TAKE you will fail. He doesn't have time to fool with lazy people
Professor Ding is quite difficult. However, if you work hard and show your effort you can earn a good grade.
he is not a very considerate teacher. Miss one class and he will lower your grade a whole letter. I do not recommend him. I worked hard, he tried to fail me, but luckily got a B. My suggestion DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Ding is a great teacher. Just be prepared to open your mind and learn, and you'll love his class! I would definitely recommend this class over PC 2500, especially if you can take his Honors section.
The best advice for his class is to GO TO EVERY ONE and to ask him to raise your grade. He raised mine to an A after I asked. He did it for a friend of mine too.
I think he is a great professor. You must go to class though. It's mandatory and if you miss, it really effects your grade. You have assignments in his class but they are not hard. Speak up in class, he likes that. As long as you follow along in class, you'll do fine. Ask questions, he doesn't mind helping you.
I was counted absent when I was there. He checks papers at the end of class to count absences. I turned my paper into him for grading corrections and he counted me absent. Also I find that he grades hard for an INTRO class. I put minimum 3 hrs into each speech and still received 50s. If you dont have 8 hrs a week to practice. Take another professor
this guy is a horrible teacher, i wouldnt recommend him to anyone. He was rude when asked questions and you couldnt understand him.
Professor Ding is a great professor. The class is really easy if you read your assigned speeches and do really well on your own speech performances. Just follow all directions and do what you're supposed to do, and you can get an A! (TIP: If you have your speeches memorized WELL, you can basically get an A on every one of them..there are 5 total).
Worst professor at tech. I put more work into this class than I did the rest of my major's courses and still failed. Refused to accept a doctor's note bc it was dated ONE day after the class I missed. Drops you a letter grade for every absence. I've never had a problem giving speeches but this guy turned it into a dreadful process. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Great teacher. Class participation counts for a lot. If you have educated opinions to contribute they will help your grade.
Horrible professor. He barley teaches you how to deliver a well written speech, then expects you to deliver one. If you miss a class, its a WHOLE LETTER GRADE, that you have no chance at bringing up even if you perform well on the speeches.
Horrible professor. Doesn't teach you how to give a speech, he prefers to focus on obscure speech theories and memorizing minute details of old speeches. If you are already comfortable with public speaking, you'll be fine. If not, don't take this professor.
Not very helpful, tough grading scale, and you have to put in a lot of time to get a good grade in this class. Treats his class likes it's the most important class you will ever take.
The first "C" I have ever had was in his class. He speaks in metaphors instead of giving actual advice on how to write your speech. He will make you memorize all of your speech without note cards. I really thought I was going to fail this class. If it weren't for quizzes over speeches I would have failed. Don't do it!
He likes to engage students which is nice. HE gave pop quizzes over historical speeches. Not everyhing on there is straight forward. You have to read them closely.. You definitely have to put a fair amount of time outside of class practicing your speeches to get a good grade. It's a little harder than it has to be but it's fair.
Very good professor but not a totally easy or clear. A fairly good amount of reading. Everything is online. You MUST go to class or you will fail.
Tough but fair, He will make you a better speaker and writer. Looking for a class that helps build your confidence from within? Take him!
Participation is your friend here. Have something intelligent to say in class, and offer up opinions. Doing this might be the difference in a letter grade at the end of the semester.
He is an incrediblely unfair grader. His lectures make no sense. If you miss his class three times, you fail. Don't take him if you care about your grades. I fail every speech but one and somehow got a 'C'.
Awful teacher. I got a C and he never put a single grade online or gave back back grades to show what I did wrong or anything. You cannot use notecards and he thinks it is a theatre class, not a speech class. He grades on a high school grading scale, so a 100-93 is an A. He thinks he has the most important class.
I usually refrain from using this platform, but after taking Professor Ding's class, I had to. This class changed my life. This class will make you think and will broaden your mind. Professor Ding is masterful in rhetoric and communication and I leave his class feeling ready to take on the world. Ding is the gem of Tech's speech department (1)
Out of all the general credit classes college makes you take, Communication is the most useful. Ding makes you a better speaker and communicator. Like any college class, what you put into it, you will receive out of it. Ding treats the honors engineering student with the same respect as he teaches the failing undecided one. (2)
A worthy class taught by an even brighter professor. Thank you, Professor Ding. (3)
Awesome professor! Pay attention and actively participate in the discussion and you can't fail. That is unless you skip class too many times. Every absence is a letter grade drop no matter the reason. Practice speeches well before the date and you will score at least an 80. Good luck!
Dr. Ding is the man! He is a tough grader but is also fair. After this class, you will be a good public speaker.
There are a total of 3 speeches, two you get to use note cards for emergency use only, and 5 quizzes. If you draw a blank during your speech he will help you out. As long as you practice your speeches and show you care, this is an easy A class. You have to come to class because he bumps you down a grade every class you miss. Overall, not bad!
Dr. Ding does not give a specific criteria for you to meet then grades you hardly when you do not do what he wants. I would advise taking anyone else besides him.
Dr. Ding is overall an ok teacher. We only had to give two speeches due to covid-19, so he gave us quizzes instead.. which were very difficult. He did not tell us what we would be graded over and I failed almost every one because of this. However, if you memorize your speeches he usually gives you an A.
Half the time this man didn't even understand what he was talking about. No respect for this man, asks for your opinion and proceeds to crap on it. Gives no grading criteria just however he feels about your speech. Be prepared to memorize and write a speech in one week because that is all he gives you. How does a non native speaker teach speech? :/
Hes a bit hard but its an easy A class. He will make you think youre gonna get a C and then surprisingly you will have an A at the end of the semester. Gives good feedback and talks about interesting topic. Nice guy and pretty good at teaching students how to master speech writing
This teacher sucks. I took his class for like three weeks and had to drop it because he was so rude. We had to do the class online and he put in my email wrong so I couldnt get into the online class but he insisted that it was my fault. Im gonna have to take communications again and I absolutely REFUSE to have this man as my teacher again
Dr. Ding is a really nice guy to talk to, but as a professor he is difficult in grading and some of his grading criteria can be unclear sometimes. He really enjoys hearing from students and group conversations in class, but outside of class he can be difficult to communicate with. I passed the class with a B (barely), but it was very difficult.
No late work. No extra credit. Ended up changing his attendance policy at the beginning of November, but didn't tell us until 11/17 that each undocumented and unexcused absence would cost us 5 points off our grade. Assignment sheets are a little hard to understand. Doesn't stay on topic well. Not good with communicating. 0/10 I would not recommend.
Prof Ding is one of the most understanding and caring teachers I have had. His quizzes are easy if you just watch the videos associated and the speeches are an easy B-A. As long as you memorize your script and are purposeful in delivery you will do well. His class consists of one quiz a week and 3 speeches. Time outside of class needed is minimal.
NEVER answers emails. Grades super harshly and unfairly. Very tedious criteria for speeches. Not many grades, but hard to make good ones. Just over all is very absent and grades super hard, but doesn't even bother to answer emails. I could teach his class better than he does and I'm 19 years old. Do not recommend.
I would not take a class with Dr. Ding. He is a very harsh grader, and gives quizzes that are almost impossible to pass. He expects you to be able to know how to give a speech without teaching how to give a speech. Overall, being in his class was not a great experience.
There are few assignments but they are graded very strictly. There is no material. No lecture, no powerpoint, nothing at all to learn from. He expects you to use strategic planning in your speech that he never actually teaches about, so even if you do everything he asks for you might still get a poor grade for not doing things exactly how he wants.
Professor Ding is a tough professor, but his class is worth it if you really want to learn. I have become a much better speaker because of taking his class and I would take him again. If you just follow the guidelines you'd pass easily with a B or higher, or at worst a C. He's an awesome dude!
Harsh grader on specific people. Never understand what point he is trying to make.
HORRIBLE professor. I f you missed and didn't have some sort of proof on why you did and will NOT hear you out. NO MAKE UPS! Must memorize multiple 45 minute speeches to take 20 question true or false quiz over very specific parts of speeches. Must memorize 700 words on multiple occasions, if anything is forgotten you WILL be counted off for.
Professor Ding was a really hard grader. You give three speeches over the semester and take four quizzes. The quizzes were not very hard if you watched the speeches that he gave you. However the speeches were graded very hard. You have to memorize the whole speech and you are not allowed to use not cards. Overall, I would not take this class again.
Professor Ding begins the class in the worst way imaginable. An example of this is students going to the bathroom. He will stop the class because he think they are "interrupting class". But as the class goes on and the amount of students lessens he begins to become a normal human being. The class gets easier as it goes on. Would not recommend class
Dr. Ding was not a good professor for this class at all. You can barely understand him and he is all over the place with his lectures. He's a HARSH grader and is not forgiving at all. Good luck ever trying to get in contact with him through email. Be prepared to memorize a lot of information aswell. Overall, I really wish I chose someone else.
DO NOT TAKE DING He has four quizzes and three speeches which doesn't sound bad but if you miss one word on a speech you fail. He refused to grade speech videos when they had legitimate technical errors it took us threatening to go to the dean about him for him to give in and grade the speeches and even at that point he shorthanded everybody.
Dr. Ding is nice, but his teaching style doesn't work. We often learned nothing in class, and you couldn't hear what he was saying because of his mumbling. He does not prepare you on how to write or present a speech until after your first speech. His quizzes don't make sense because he pulls random facts from videos we watched.
Dr. Ding is a very inefficient lecturer. He mumbles and takes forever to get any point across. The assignments are ok but require a lot of memorization. There is honestly not a whole lot to be learned from his class and it was a complete waste of time.
Dropped this class after only one day and reading the syllabus. Hard to understand him and his ramble. Doesn't want you late or even to go to the bathroom mid-class. Even if you have a note that is university approved he can override that and make absence unexcused. Syllabus even says if you don't pay attention enough according to him you get an F.
Dr.Ding was great, he expects you to show up to class and follow his instructions on assignments, which seems to be an issue for some people? No pop quizzes, the questions on quizzes were "true or false" / "who said ____" based on videos you watched. 3 out of 4 speeches, we recorded. Only the 3rd one was in person. Easy A if you can read a rubric.
I was not a fan of this class. Halfway through the semester Dr. Ding decide to go online with little warning. I don't think I've actually learned a single thing this semester, it's all been busy work. Also, beware of false AI and cheating flags automatically giving you zeros, multiple people have had issues with his class over that.
