Goes a bit too fast...teaches out of order...hard to understand...has killer midterms.
The cutest teacher ever!!
lots of reading and make sure you stay awake in class-can get boring. he's foreign so sometimes hard to understand....
Hard to understand, but his tests and quizzes are simple and he gives a review guide before the midterm and final. Studying that, alone, netted me a 97% in the class.
He is very nice and means well, but GOODNESS his classes are BORING and he is quite hard to understand. might look for another teacher
I loved his class. He's not that hard to understand. The textbook wasn't necessary, but the supplemental readings definately were. His tests were long, but the quizzes weren't that hard and helped make up a lot of the grade. I highly recommend him.
Such a cute guy! Tests are a little difficult, but he will give you the benefit of the doubt. He will also give you the notes before the test. The book is not really totally necessary.
Dr. Chumakov is great! Take him for Gender in Society if you get the chance!
great teacher.

Excellent teacher! He is a very well-traveled individual. The quizes and exams cover mainly lecture material, so take good notes. I rarely consulted the textbook and still got an A. He gives you a rather thorough review guide for each exam. Excellent guy!
I took General Sociology 120 with Chumakov & definitely regret it! He is extremely hard to understand {thick Russian accent} and lectures are a complete BORE. He gives very few tests and they are all quite difficult. I worked my ass off and still got a B, which brought down my GPA.
he's a nice guy and really wants you to learn - but plan to come to every class. he lectures without powerpoints, so its difficult to take notes. quizzes are challening, exams count for a lot of the grade. but if you are into less homework and more tests its a good class to take. you might could get by without the textbook, but buy the suppl. book
I took his gender class and it is easy but you have to pay attention. He has a thick accent and doesn't use any handouts or powerpoint. You just have to take notes on what he says. It's all pretty basic info.
He has a Russian accent that may take you a lecture or two to get used to, but otherwise he is a fairly straighforward teacher. Take very good notes, as his tests come from that and the secondary book for the class. If you want a definate A, take him, read each chapter along with the reader material and you'll get an easy A.
One of the most interesting teachers I've had thusfar. Fantastic to listen to and is really quite funny--but make sure to take notes and read up on all textbook and supplemental material. Charming and delightful.
He is a great professor if you do have to take his late class it's still good. He always have something funny to talk about and something to make you think. The only problem with him is that he gives bs extra credit.
I'm a junior and struggled in this class...it's possibly the hardest i have ever taken. made the material much more difficult than it had to be. had friends in sociology 120 with a different teacher who were watching movies while i was killing myself trying to pass this class! very hard grader...detail oriented!
very very hard. you cannnot understand him. asks for wayyyy too much detail. if you can take someone else please do.
Dr. Chumakov is one of the best professors I've had at UT. His knowledge is outstanding and he loves to teach. His accent is not bad at all and he is really quite funny. If you really want to learn take him! He is very helpful. Tests are a bit detailed but nothing that is too challenging. Give effort and you will be rewarded. Some great stories too
Hard to understand. Quizzes are very hard. Only two tests: the midterm and final which make up 65% of grade. Both have an essay portion. The final includes 2 essays that are a major part of the grade. He does offer extra credit- a series of movies and the global hour at the international house. I wouldn't take him again.
AWESOME TEACHER!! he really cares about what he teaches and is very interesting. quizzes are common sense mostly and exams are tough and a big portion of the grade but if you go to class and study you'll be fine. probably my favorite teacher at UT so far.
This guy is a joke. Class was hardest in three years at UT. Went to class every day, but seems like he grades very objectionably with well written essays being graded far too harshly. Do yourself a favor, take someone else.
I loved this class. Professor Chumakov was fairly easy to understand, and made class interesting. The tests were a bit difficult, but if you take notes and study it's a breeze. I'm planning on taking his Gender and Society course I liked him so much.
Prof. Chumakov is awesome. His lectures are very interesting, he is light-hearted and likes to crack jokes and ask questions that make you think. I don't believe the course is difficult, but I took Sociology in high school, so I may be biased. Either way, if you want to/have to take it, I definitely recommend Prof Chumakov.
I really enjoyed this class, if you show up and take good notes and read the material you can get an A. His accent takes a few classes to get use to, but other than that he was a pleasure. Very informative and helpful.
He comes to class every day and teachers the whole time. This really helped me hold myself responsible coming to class and his enthusiasm for the subject matter made me more interested in the subjects. Class is not easy if you dont work, but all you really need to do is read the summary at the end of the chapeters.
Seriously was the best teacher I've had so far. It took me a couple classes to get used to his accent but from then on out I loved his class. If you go and pay attention and take notes, you'll get an A. He knows his stuff and he's funny. He cracks jokes but still keeps you interested the entire time. His class was honestly great.
The class isn't hard. Quizzes are given after each section and there is a midterm and a final. The accent isn't hard to pick up on so don't worry. If you are not a socialist prepare to be indoctrinated. His lectures could be cut in half, the time is spent mostly on tangents and diatribes.
My favorite professor I've ever had. I had no interest whatsoever in the subject, and he really made it interesting. Yes, he is a socialist, but he doesn't try to push his ideas on anyone, its just cool to see everything from a new point of view. The class takes some dedication, but is one I thoroughly enjoyed taking.
Last semester, 15/212 students made As. For those of you who, like myself, are moderately intelligent but a lazy when it comes to studying, accept that you will make a B in this class, or accept that you need to study a great deal more than normal. He rambles about Russia, that's kinda cool until we get to the exams. I'd take a different professor
Attendance is a MUST in this class. Every class you miss, study that much more. The main reason people fail this class is because they do not go to it! He covers a lot in each class...
Very funny guy who tries his best to make class fun and engaging. However, there are only like three grades, quizzes, midterm, and final. Everyday you just listen to him talk, no worksheets or powerpoints and hardly any notes on the board, so it can get boring. If you are lazy and don't go to class and don't pay attention it is likely you will fail
Funny and warmhearted guy. Comes to class, talks about whatever the hell he needs to for the day and leaves. Its about all you could expect of him. Tests aren't too bad and the paper I had to do was nothing special. There are probably better teachers than him but you could do a hell of a lot worse.
He is more Russian then I could have imagined which is awesome, pretty sure he plays Devil's Advocate to try and get people to speak up, knows subject very well, tells you Karl Marx's opinion for everything, great great teacher tho
Take this man! I would take him again if I could. He's a bright and cheerful lecturer who has a knack for generating interest in his subject. There is laughter in his classroom. Gives a series of quizzes along with midterm and final, none are difficult if you take notes in lecture. Any average student should pass without difficulty.
very hard tests; no chance for getting a good grade if you don't do well on them because there is only a midterm and a final plus one paper. attending class is worth only 10%
Read or try to make inherently obvious guesses on tests/quizzes. Each test has a written part so basically answer the question, he doesn't care for length. He has the coolest accent ever, but his grading irritated me.
This class was awesome. He brought in a lot of really cool/weird pictures. You can say whatever is on your mind. The tests are kinda hard (it's part multiple choice/true or false/essay. There are only 3 grades: midterm, paper, final.
very nice Person. Not a bad teacher. his writing is hard to read but the class is fun and interesting. i definitly recoment taking it
Don't miss class. If you're expecting an easy A from this class, it's not gonna happen. He's a pretty hard teacher, but fair.
Very hard but interesting class. Attend class and do the readings. If you don't - you're screwed. Dr. Chumakov is a hard but fair teacher and he likes to crack jokes during class. He's got a great sense of humor and he knows what he's talking about. If you want to learn something take him, if you want an easy A don't take this class.
I am an engineer who had to take this class for one of my gen eds. Yuri seems to enjoy his job and makes his lectures entertaining. Tests are directly from the notes. I didn't even buy the book and I am doing well in the class.
Very intersting lecture but very hard class. % quizes, a midterm and a final. Look on study blue for some answers to quizes. Not an easy grader. Come to class every day because its part of your grade. Do not take if you want an easy A, i am expecting to get around a C in the course.
He is a hard teacher. Lots of readings and taking notes can be difficult. Quizzes, 2 tests and a paper. Tests are very hard and attendance is a must. I personally would avoid taking this teacher.
There is no doubt that Dr. Chumakov loves what he does; however, is class is far from easy. If you take this class, be prepared to study hard for the midterm and the final because they are worth a combined 65 percent of your grade. Having said this, the workload for the rest of the class is not very daunting. He's a cool guy, not easy gen-ed
Dr. Chumakov is a great teacher, but his class isn't easy. Your grade relies solely on your midterm and your final exam. He grades very harshly on the essay portions, and if you don't do the readings you have no chance of passing this course. I attended almost every class and did almost every reading and still got a D because of my test grades.
Make sure you go to class and take notes from the lecture. STUDY for the 5 quizzes because those actually can make or break your grade. Definitely a hard class. Make sure you study days in advance for the midterm and final. The essays on those are what he grades the most on.
I really love this guy, but this class is hard. He really tries to make the class enjoyable and it is, but it is far from easy. There are 5 quizzes and each of them count for 5 percent of your final grade. You have to read the textbook and study hard to do well. I strongly suggest this professor if you are willing to work for the grade.
He is the worst! His English isn't well and he doesn't give much information for there to only be test and quizzes.
He is a nice guy and very funny, but he makes the gen ed way harder than it needs to be. He has a very illegitimate way of grading, and he posts none of your grades on blackboard. This makes it near impossible to know how you are doing. Honestly a waste of time and money with this one..
He is a really tough grader. You MUST study for the quizzes or else you will fail. The midterm is very difficult, I would start studying for it the day you begin class. You must work super hard in order to even make a C. Come to class because attendance is mandatory. Do the extra credit no matter how boring or awful it is. IT WILL help your grade.
Only grades come from a handful of quizzes, the midterm, and the final but none are very challenging and he takes attendance every day.
4 grades: Attendanceparticipation, Midterm (multiple choice and essay), Paper, Final. He rambles in class, but what he says that does relate to the readings do show up on the exams, so he's consistent with that. The exams are tough, though. I made a B, but the highest grade was a 91, and there is no curving.
Each week, we were assigned very large readings to complete. This is overwhelming, especially when you have lots of other readings to do in your other classes that are actually in your major. My advice would be to not take this class unless you are a sociology major and love super long, grueling readings. On the first exam, most everyone made CD.
This was one of the worst classes I've taken at UT. He is confusing to follow in lectures and post no notes to BlackBoard. Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy course. He is not very helpful and is very set in his ways and opinions. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
If you really love Social Movements, it's a great class. He is clear in his lectures, but doesn't post them to BlackBoard. If you do your readings and pay attention it's not the worst, but do not expect this to be an easy A at all. Again, do the readings they are key to your success in the class.
Dr. Chumakov is a very interesting professor and person. He makes sociology understandable and relates it to current events and everyday life. However, he gives so few grades, that you have to go well on everything if you don't want your grade to suffer. Study a lot, and a good grade is possible.
He's a great man, very interesting and knowledgeable, and makes the class fun. A lot of reading from the reader, and very few tests and quizzes. Attendance counts toward your grade and he does not post notes on BlackBoard. If you study, read, and go to class you can get an A pretty easily though.
Made sociology very relatable; gave long, detailed, specific study guides; easy to pass, but hard to get an A.
His lectures and note taking were vital for the tests. 10 page end of course paper but it was enjoyable after having the class. Takes attendance daily. Helpful in office hours.
Yuri is a very intelligent man. Unfortunately, his lectures get very long and very boring quickly. His lecture style is also not very straight forward. Exams and quizzes have a lot of tricky questions. If you go to class every day, take notes, and do the readings, you'll pass. Maybe not an A, but you'll pass.
I took this class over the summer for mini term. This class was very fast paced and I was reading every night (20-30 pages). You HAVE to do the readings and to stay on top of them and of course you must buy the book. There were 4 quizzes and 2 tests. Professor Chumakov, is a funny guy but I wouldn't take him unless you really needed to.
GO TO CLASS. Don't have a buddy and skip? SOL. Why? NOTES. Be able to take great notes! He basically just talks (Russian accent isn't too bad) and you listen and write down as much as you can. Also, don't underestimate the QUIZZES *do readings*; these babies add up and are filled with tricky multiple choice and T/F. Interesting class and funny guy
Dr. Chumakov is absolutely the most unintentionally hilarious man, and makes uninteresting topics better with his humor. However, in-class time is 100% lecture with no visual aid, so it can get dull. Your grade consists of 5 quizzes, 2 exams, and attendance. Do not miss a class, read the assigned chapters, ask questions, and you will be fine!
I really enjoyed Dr. Chumaokuv. At first I was a bit skeptical because of his accent, but you get used to it really quickly. You MUST attend classes because he does not post notes online and you have to listen to his lectures in order to truly understand the material. Also, make sure you read and study the material. If you do that, you'll be fine!
Would not recommend taking him, VERY hard class, he just rambles on for the whole semester.
Dr. Chumakov is a really funny guy and you can tell he's both passionate and knowledgeable about sociology. Quizzes are generally easy and textbook readings aren't necessary to pass the class; take good notes during lectures and you'll be solid. He covers lots of topics and helped me learn a lot, definitely recommend!
Dr. Chumakov is a really funny guy and you can tell how passionate/knowledgeable he is about sociology. Quizzes are easy and textbook readings aren't necessary to pass the class, but be sure to take good notes during lectures. He covers lots of interesting topics and helped me learn a lot about sociology, definitely recommend!
Dr. Chumakov is a really funny guy and you can tell he's passionate/knowledgeable about sociology. Quizzes are easy and textbook readings aren't necessary to pass; definitely take good notes during lectures and you'll be solid. He covers lots of interesting topics and helped me learn a lot.
Does not do powerpoint slides, and just talks the entire lecture. Only has 4 grades; Attendance, the mid term, the final, and a final paper. Each one of those is literally worth 30% of your grade. The info is very hard but if you word through it you can do it.
Yuri is a great man and you can tell he is passionate about teaching and sociology! This is a pretty easy honors class to take, you don't need to read the textbook to pass but he doesn't do PowerPoint or post lectures online so if you don't attend class you won't get the notes. Be interactive+attentive in class because this is part of your grade.
Dr. Chumakov is passionate about Sociology and he loves to teach it. He has very interesting views about the world, but is a bit of a cynic. He is funny and engaging, however his lectures are long, sometimes boring and the notes you take are mostly from what he says, not the powerpoints, which are minimal. Pay attention and come to class.
lol wish I knew what grade I have but no idea because he doesn't post on blackboard or canvas!! Seriously such a difficult class, this is infinitely harder than the 300-400 level classes I'm taking. Be sure to go to class and take notes, but just know it's very boring! Just lectures the entire class with no visual aid :/
Made lectures interesting, but gave very few grades. The only grades consisted of 5 quiz grades, a midterm, and a final. He covers a lot of information in class through his lectures, but does not upload anything. His lectures consist of a lot of pictures and a few definitions. I would recommend going to every class!! Keep up with the reading!!!
This guy makes the class way harder than it should be. I really don't recommend to take this class and please take this advice if you want to take a good care of your GPA. It will lower your GPA. Just listen to me and don't take it. You won't even be able to focus on class and tests are terribly horrible.
Dr. Chumakov is an awesome professor! He is very passionate about sociology and knows all there is to know about it. He lectures throughout the entire class, up until the last minute. He gives very few grades and does not upload any power points to canvas so make sure you come to class and take good notes. Highly recommend taking him!
Dr. Chumakov is overall a very good professor. His accent does not inhibit understanding and when combined with his dry humor is quite funny at times. There are few grades in the class, only a midterm, final, and five 15 question "quizzes" that were 5% of the grade each. Lectures can boring, but you're rewarded on tests if you pay attention.
Professor Chumakov isn't terrible but he isn't great. His class is somewhat interesting but his quizzes and tests are difficult because he takes the material out of the book rather than from his lectures. He also tests much more than other professors for the same class. Again, he isn't too bad, but there are much better alternatives.
Yuri is an adorable old man from Russia who could tell you a story about every country because he's been to like all of them, but he's a terrible 100 level teacher. It's hard and boring and long. I love sociology but this class made me no longer minor in it.
His lectures are really boring and there is little information on his powerpoint slides so you really have to pay attention and make sure you don't gaze off because you will miss important info. Luckily at times he can be very interesting and funny. Quiz/tests do not directly reflect lectures, so it is hard to gauge studying. He does't post grades.
He is a good professor but not very clear in grading. Class is MANDATORY and it is 10% of your grade. If you take his class, make sure you don't miss. Also, he announces quizzes ahead of time. He has two tests the entire semester. The midterm (30% of your grade) and the final (35% of your grade).
no group projects. participation doesn't matter. I could sit on my phone all class.. never read a sing article or assigned reading and made a B. lol. I have taken him twice. No tests, all written essays of topics he prepares you for.
Yuri's class was interesting and I learned a lot about Globalization and Injustice. During class he goes over the readings in more detail with PowerPoint. He LOVES participation and will try to get people to tell their opinion on a certain issue. Try to attend class as much as you can because there's a lecture every day. Overall, I liked the class!
Dr. Chumakov is an excellent lecturer. I enjoyed coming to class because I loved what we were discussing. He can be a bit biased towards subjects such as religion, since he is openly atheist. His grading criteria is extremely harsh. The quizzes are not easy and neither is the midterm. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you
Yuri tries really hard to explain is lectures but between his accent and how boring he is I don't know how anyone can pay attention or make an A. I suggest not taking him ever
Dr. Chumakov is AMAZING if you are willing to work for the grade. He has reasonable expectations & truly wants you to succeed. The thing about 344 is that there are no right/wrong answers as long as you back it up with examples! Very few grades for the class, so attendance is 10% but participation doesn't matter. He is such a wonderful man!
Dr. Chumakovs class is very lecture-heavy and his powerpoints dont have much information, but most of it is taken from the textbook. He has a pretty heavy accent but he enunciates very clearly so as long as you pay a little attention it isnt a problem. His lectures are interesting and he can be really funny.
Had Dr. Chumakov for two semesters in a row - SOCI 120 (General Sociology) then SOCI 344 (Political Sociology). He is a fantastic professor, making the concepts clear and understandable. He even encouraged my participation and discussion in class even though my opinions may not be popular on college campuses. Highly recommend you take his class.
He actually sucks at teaching. Is a funny guy though.
This class lacked structure - something that I need in order to do well. His lectures are very dry and boring with PowerPoint presentations that are so unhelpful. He is inactive on Canvas and does not post grades. The class is determined on quizzes, participation and 2 exams: your midterm and your final.
It was sometimes hard to understand him being that his accent was so heavy. I didnt like that he never utilized Canvas. You dont know your grades until the end of the semester. There were no classwork or homework assignments, only quizzes and tests.
He is a good man but the class is not supposed to be this difficult. Overall, his lectures were fine and eye opening, however, you are graded on very few things. The quizzes he gives require that you comprehend everything. 65% of your grade is determined by two exams. Read the textbook and other material carefully not to miss anything.
Great guy very personable, but his lectures are all over the place and he doesn't post grades so you don't know what you made in the class. he's very funny but scattered brained. theres a bunch of quizzes and then two exams, no room for anything.
Lectures are unorganized and the only source of the information he gives. Even if you read the book, do not use what you learned from it or interpreted from it on the exams. He only cares about how well you can tell him what he told you in lecture.
So, I had Dr. Chumakov for both General (120) and Political (344) Sociology. I personally find him to be a very engaging professor, though I made a solid B in both classes. He encouraged discussion in both classes (more in 344 than 120). He wants you to question the things around you. He challenged me as a student in the best way possible.
Professor Chumakov was super fun! He made the class very interesting although nothing was posted on a powerpoint so you pretty much have to write down every word he says. The only grades in the class were the quizzes, a midterm and the final, but they aren't too hard. He's pretty funny and I enjoyed his class.
Absolutely worst teacher I have ever had. Whenever I went to ask him questions he was extremely rude and wouldn't even look at me. His power points have one picture and one word, and his lectures don't even help for the tests. The tests are extremely hard as well.
Umm. Very difficult to get an A because of the quizzes. I studied so much for all of them and he always gives you points/5. He does not adjust if you made a 14/15 on his quiz. You automatically get a 4/5. His midterm was hard. This is the only class I've ever gotten a B in. He doesn't give -grades so A goes to a B+.
Worst class I have ever taken. He only takes very few grades, which is a final, midterm, and a few quiz grades. His lectures are not organized at all, and he will go from talking about one thing and then something off-topic right after.
I took him this past May in a mini term, so I can't say how he grades for a full semester necessarily. I got an A without even doing the readings because he let us do open note essay exams. However, taking good notes from the things he says in class is vital. I think that as long as you show up and listen you should make a good grade. Took SOCI 342
Quizzes are all over the place, and they are always either lecture heavy or textbook heavy, neither both. He doesn't use canvas (technology is the devil), brings up personal political beliefs that are irrelevant to the course, and makes /sometimes/ funny jokes. There is no physical work to it.
Makes it so much harder than it needs to be. Class is based off of 5 quizzes, a midterm, and your final. Those plus your attendance is the only thing you will have a grade for. His quizzes and tests are all over the place. Sometimes they are lecture heavy, other times textbook heavy. Hes a nice guy and funny, but dont take this class. Just dont.
Do. Not. Take. This. Professor. Seriously. I am an honors student, so I took the honors section for one of my credits, and god it was a mistake. If you need to take this class, DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM. Your grade is SOLELY based on 5 quizzes (25% of grade), 2 exams (65% of grade), and attendance (10% of grade). Just don't do it. Trust me. Plz
Quizzes are taken after lecture which usually only gives you 15 minutes to take them. Hes incredibly boring, and your entire grade is based off of 5 tough quizzes, a midterm, a final, and your attendance. Please, please do not take this class with him. I shouldve taken a W instead of suffering through this.
Yuri does not seem to care about his students at all: he did not care in the slightest that the average student failed his midterm, he rounded the grades of quizzes down so they would be more convenient for him to record, and he was clearly uninterested in anything students had to say in class or elsehwere. Please dont take his class.
Midterm-30%, final-35%, attendance-10%, and 5 quizzes-5% each of final grade. Lecture is super boring, and the amount of reading is ridiculous for a GenEd class. I am an honors engineering student, and this class took up more of my time than my physics class. He asks super specific questions so you must know the material like the back of your hand.
All he does is lectures that are super boring. Most of his lectures arent specific enough for the tests and quizzes. No filler grades. If you do bad on one test it is really hard to bounce back from. He is also a harsh grader. My first ever grade below a B. Other sociology teachers are an easy A.
Dr. Chumakov is passionate about sociology but his lectures are very boring. His powerpoints do not have all the notes on them, he explains them instead, but his very thick accent makes it difficult to understand. Also, this course is graded based on 5 quizzes. 2 exams and attendance. Lastly, Dr C makes very inappropriate comments sometimes.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Very specific questions on broad topics. There are no assignments besides tests. I would ask for help and he would brush me off. I do not recommend.
Screw up one thing, and your GPAs life is over. I really wish there more grades that could balance out and mess ups. I personally like the lectures but the the two separate textbooks are too much.
Dr. Chumakov was one of my favorite professors Ive ever had at UT. He has awesome lectures if youre interested in sociology and is EXCELLENT at being devils advocate during the class debates. He always made me think outside the box. The class was not easy but I learned a TON about sociology.
