excellent teacher for algebra and precalculus - if you work hard he will see to it that you make it through the course.
horrible
Abdi is very nice but his english is not very clear and his teaching techniques can sometimes be complicated without needing to be.
i thought he was going to be easy. turned out to be real hard and was not caring of my grades even though i passed all his exams. he thinks too highly of himself and should relax. overall hes an okay guy but grader hes hard.
If your actually looking to pass your math requirment do not take this professor. Very hard to understand and makes the class more diffucult than it needs to be. Rushes through the chapters like it's a race.
Great Professor, really takes time out of his schedule to help students. He comes across as a hard professor but he teaches well and his class is worth taking.
If you pay attention, take notes and go get help if you need it the the class is cake. He is willing to work with you if you are willing to work with him. He's definitely there for when you need help and thats what counts.
Hard to understand... Notes he gives in class can be very confusing... But he is there to help, and will take time out to listen and explain until you get it.
if you want to take his class prepare to teach yourself as well as the professor b/c he knows nothing about the subject matter...in the words of the professor "its your life"
He is not clear while explaining stuff. He is never helpful. He is very hard in grading. He would say that, he would curve but than doesn't do that. Never keeps his promise.
I was a fine math student until I took this class. So mindnumbingly bad I wanted to drop out of school all together. Do not take this guy.
Do the homework and you're fine, or don't do the homework and you're still OK. Has an accent so it's hard to understand him. Does random attendence so skipping class is harder, but most of the time I just showed up and left early when he turned his back.
Very nice guy. Will go over every question you ask him even if it takes up the whole class. Always there to help and if you do poorly it's your own fault, "It's your life."
he's one of the worst math proffesor in rutgers next to boylan... i think they hang out cause they both suck!!! he's really stubborn and won't help u at all .... don't ever take him... unless of course u want to fail...
I CANT UNDERSTAND HIMMMMMMM
HORRIBLE. This guy is a jerk--does not want to help students at all. Very UNapproachable, makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Never at office hours, will not meet outside of posted hours. Belittles students. Favors girls, especially Muslim girls. Speech is very unclear.
He's a good man. He will explain everything until you get it. His accent makes him difficult to understand sometimes, but he will repeat himself until you know what he's saying. He grades very fairly; you will get exactly what you put into it.
Horrible math teacher. Hard to understand with his accent. He's sarcastic, stubborn, thinks he knows everything yet does some math wrong. He makes you feel like an idiot. His famous line is "I know what I'm doing." WRONG! He might know but the class doesnt. He will not try to help ur grade.
pretty easy but jumps from one idea to the next with no clear transition...leaves you saying "huh?"
I hate math, and I thought I would never pass Algebra. But he made it easy for me. He made me want to study, and I passed with a B+. That's a huge improvement, especially since I received an F with Stafford. He was the best Math teacher I have ever had!
He's a good guy, may seem a bit stubborn but if you want to pass then you will pass this class, Take it from me, I went through college algebra twice, first failed, second time, I had to withdraw because I was going to fail As long as you do your homework, do good on quizzes you will be fine. I got
This professor is difficult to understand but when it comes to grading its easier. if you take his class with resitation, if you go to resitation you can get a better grade in his class...i started my grades were 58, 90, and 79 plus the 9/10 points in resitation and got an A in his class...good luck
I had him when I was a freshman, it was a good experience. It is really hard to understand what he's saying, but his grading is easy. Show some progress, and you have get an A regardless.
very bad professor dont take him you honestly dont know your grade until like after the semester is over and it always hits you by surpise
Professor Abdi is a good teacher. He answers all questions asked and will continue to go over them until you understand it. I would take him again if I could. He helped a lot.
easy to understand. he explains the examples very well. he makes sure everyone is on the same page. just try to do all the hw and study for the exam. I got a B+ on his class. He also drops the lowest grade. Fair grader
his teacing tactics are good. if u don't understand a problem he will go over it until you fully understand and grasp the meaning of the problem. his test are like 10-12 questions tops. and the final is not hard at all you do good on the final your grade goes up drastically
Helpfull? U people are crazy the only way u'll pass his class is if u teach urself. It's very hard to understand what he's saying and he grades the tests unfairly. Plus he only gives 3 of them so if u f'up u fail!
ok ok i had him 2yrs ago but he's good ... you just have to ask him to help u and he'll do it
Ok Abdi is not all that bad! He is strict with his work but is a good professor. He makes you understand the work as long as you ask questions. Only three exams and he drops the lowest grade. The exams are about 10 questions at the most. He is very helpful but can go a little fast if you dont stop him. I like the class.
He's pretty cool. I have no complaints against him.
Hes a pretty good professor.. you just need to the homeowork and study a bit and u'll pass the course.. he's very helpful too O and by the way he's is the head of the math department so you have a heads up about what the final will look like
abdi is a good teacher... he simplifies things and is always lookin to help u ... if u can get him as ur teacher then i would advise it...
okay he's not a great prof. very dull and difficult and he favors i was failing with 32's 40's and a 58 and i passed with a C. i guess he wants to see effort. That class was a struggle especially with him teaching it. But i like him as a person he quite interesting.
Abdi knows his stuff and tries hard to help you understand...This class will only come easy if you practice, practice, practice. He take attendance, and is serious about people paying attention in class. Oh, and don't ask to many questions during class he'll tell you if he's annouyed. If you do have problems he perfers you see him after class.
Abdi is a good teacher. You just have to pay attention and if you have any problems, seem him during his office hours. And he writes the final exam, so he will not teach you anything that will not appear on the final.
the worst teacher i have ever had...his tests are impossible does not give half credit..when doing problems on the board often gets them wrong and he is very hard to understand i do not recomend taking his class if possible to get around it
Professor Abdi's lecture is full of errors here and there despite his preparation of notes. He took long pauses during classtime, maybe thinking how to solve the problems at hand. It just leaves people the impression that he does not know the subject well. I wonder how he did in math when he was in college.
He's a great professor! However he has an accent, so it's a little difficult to comprehend what he is saying from time to time. He is extremely helpful because he will stop the class if you get confused.
This professor is the worst. He is really stubborn and kind of weird. When doing a problem on the board he wonders in his own little world. He is always saying "its your life." Dont take him he is stupid and his accent is very strong. Seriously dont take his class you will regret it. He only gives 3 test so if u fail two then you are screwed.
Abdi is a great professor. As long as you pay attention in class and put effort into it, he will definately recognize your efforts and reward you for them. He always asks the class is they have any questions before continueing onto the next lesson and does his best to make sure that everyone is keeping up. Study your notes well and show your work!
He is a good teacher. Some might say that he is hard and can't be understood, but in reality, he knows his stuff. On top of that he is the 1 that writes the final for all the college algebra classes so you might as well take him 4 the class itself. he's willing 2 help & answer every single ? you have. Trust me, he did it for this one guy in my clas
I took Prof Abdi for remedial Alg. Two courses so I could attempt the Col Alg requirement to graduate. He was so kind and giving with his time in Summer, ask he helps. If you want to learn he'll teach you. Because of him and a Saturday Col Alg instructor I got an A they worked together to help me. BA History Summa major. Awesome professor. TGFA
He is a good person but he is often confused with his stuff which is not good for students to learn. I liked him as a person because he is HOTTTT. But he is a bad teacher. Sorry but I still love you~
very good professor. gives descent amount of homework and 3 test bt he drops the lowest grade. if u do most of your homework and show up for class youll def. pass definitely recommended very helpful & reviews before all test. btw he makes the final so you cant go wrong there
lies to his students.. you go to him for help.. barely answers your questions.. and his grading system in terriblee! i recommend you take someone else for calc I .. or just do it in the summer, and this is coming from someone who loved math until he taught itt
this guy is annoying..make sure u do all of the hw cause it counts big even though he says it dont...tests r tricky but ok...make sure u pass the final..its pretty easy..try to get a copy from carolla's students..exactly alike
DONT TAKE HIM!! Had him for precalc in the summer he goes way to fast nd finished the class without teaching us 2 chapters doesnt review for the final. he does a horrible job at explaining the material and gets agitated easily if you dont understand him the first time he explains anything. If you care abt your GPA & grade do not take him.
i took him last summer, he is okay. just do all hw. he is helpful if u go to him in his office hours. he is nice. he is not that interesting and his class is little boring, but if u study u will pass his class.
I don't know what these other people are saying. Prof.Abdi is the best! He is extremely funny and he truly does care for you to pass. If u dont understand a problem then he explains until you get get it. His tests are easy if you study for them and quizzes are a bit tricky. Overall i would def. recommend him!!
He is a really good professor! he makes his test hard but it gets you ready for the final. take this professor is possible! He is the head of the math department and makes the final!! What better person to teach you the subject?! and he's really funny!!
A very kind professor. He has a thick accent so you need to listen carefully. His exams and quizzes are hard but not impossible. He does tend to move quickly through the chapters so refer to the book if you get stuck. Grades based on points, anything above 300=passed.
good teacher, but he can be unfair. im probably a little bias because i had an A in his class and ended up with an F because of a few problems between me and him. Hes not a bad professor but if you can take another one, do it.
useless..doesnt completely explain or solve a problem..u cant understand him all he says is " && the rest is history!" ..he writes the final exam and i passed it taking another prof. avoid him if your not that good in math..
His lectures consist of example problems straight from his primitive college notes. His exams can be a little tricky and his final definitely broke a sweat. He's not that fair of a grader because i aced his first 2 exams and did bleh on the final and got a B+. He's a funny guy though, indeed.
Best professor ever!!! At first I was worried that he would be hard but he wasn't. Very funny and helpful. Yes he has an accent but trust me you can understand him. Quizzes are rarely hard if you don't do the problems he assigns. Overall, def take him. I got an A and never did hw and I hate math
Horrible professor. Doesn't explain material. Encourages students to ask questions, but makes them feel incompetent and like an idiot when doing so. Avoid taking him if you can; unfair grader. Tells you one thing and does another. Accent isn't much of a problem, he speaks with most clarity. The problem mainly lays in the helpfulness and grading.
I loved Professor Abdi! I don't get what the problem was for people, if you ask for help he'll explain it. It makes it very simple and teaches shortcuts. Honestly you should take him if you can. Do you want someone to make it easy or do you want somemone to teach? He offered to help me in higher level classes, where he would not be my teacher too
horrible, just horrible. Makes students feels as if they know nothing. Doesnt answer questions when asked, but cares about attendance. HOW DO YOU GET TWO PEOPLE MIXED UP wen u take the attendance. got me confused with another girl through out the entire semester. complete fail. definitely unfair... and shows it.
Dr. Abdi is one of the best professors, and smartest, on campus. He may teach quick at times, but he is one of the most helpful guys you will ever find. Homework is graded and counts for a large part of your grade, and some problems appear on quizzes! DO THE ONLINE HOMEWORK! Take good notes to pass his exams, great teacher highly recommend
i love professor abdi! i hate math but i actually learned alot and still didn't put much effort and still passed LOVED HIM*
He was pretty good, he just requires you to attend his class or takes of points. He's makes very corny jokes but it's kinda cute. :) lol
He's an okay guy, but a terrible professor. He makes you feel really stupid, and has a very heavy accent so you can barely understand him (coming from someone whose parents have heavy accents). He will make mistakes all the time and confuse students, then stand there and look at the board wondering what he did wrong. Avoidddddddd.
Dr. Abdi takes into account who works hard and who doesn't. Your capability to be respectful, punctual, and hard-working will factor into your grade at the end. Attend every class, don't show up late, take notes, sit up front, and ask questions. He is a nice guy if you are willing to put effort in his class. Take him for Intermediate Algebra.
he is a good professor ,you'll never fall asleep in his class he is funy guy
Math is really difficult for me. Professor Abdi took the time to explain the steps over and over until we understood it. He cares about the students learning and is very patient. I would take his class again.
makes everything more complicated than they need to be
Cool dude, but if you don't take the time out to practice the material you probably won't do so well. He explains things in class well, after you just need to practice. However, if you just want an easy A then you should probably go elsewhere.
This man taught me mathematics. Period. There is no other way to explain him. He is an excellent Professor who listens to his students, keeps them engaged, and truly truly knows his stuff. I am so thankful I took this class.
EASY A+ .great guy. accent kinda makes it hard to understand him but he tries his best to help you. doesn't take suggestions , so don't try to be a know it all. Gives study guides. follows workbook.
This professor is too difficult to understand. He encourages students to ask questions because he's getting paid to be there, but once someone asks a question he redirects you to a "similar" question the class did a while ago.
He's really not a bad professor. Had him for intermediate algebra. I'm not very good at math and got a good grade for the class. He's helpful and his scent really isn't that bad.
He's not a bad professor. You do need to put in effort. He will tell you what to study for the midterm and final but he gives pop quizzes so make sure you're on top of things. He does have an accent but one you get used to it, it isn't that bad.
Professor Abdi is a very reasonable grader. His grading scale is fair and if you put in the work you will pass. He is a funny guy, his exams are also friendly as well. Recommend for any class.
Professor Abdi, failed approx. 70% of his Spring 14' class. He faces the board for most of the class and turns around ever so often to say "I hope you would agree with me". On his testsquizzes there are no partial credit, around me 40s were considered high. At one point in his class he gave a practice quiz, and he gave different concepts for quiz.
Professor Abdi is a great mathematician, but a poor instructor. He has trouble teaching how to do math. He spends class solving problems on the board while everyone just copies. No participation, just him doing equations and saying "its simple". Intimidating to ask questions, you will be put on the spot. Really struggling at the moment
This is a sum up of Professor Abdi's class. Every class he solves aprox. 5-8 questions. He literally just writes the question on the board and solves it. no explanation, no participation. He is anxious to move on with the material, so it is frowned upon when you delay him with questions about the material. Otherwise this would be a great class.
Does all math problems in his head and writes it on the board. Therefore you will never really know how he came to solve a problem. He encourages you to ask questions if you do not understand, but then gets frustrated and sassy when you ask questions. Goto him after class for questions, simply states "my time is done, im not getting paid no more"
Seriously, the man does about 8 math problems in class. says "I think you would agree with me". Then moves on. Assigns homework problems by the 100s. The syllabus says we are to reach chapter 13 by December, it is almost November and we are only on chapter 2!!!. What is the point of doing hundreds of hw problems if only 8 of them are related??
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! YOU WILL FAIL AND NOT LEARN ANYTHING AT ALL!!!!!! HE CANNOT TEACH WHATSOEVER. YOU MIGHT AS WELL TEACH YOURSELF. HIS EXAMS ARE RIDICULOUS. HE DOES NOT GIVE A REVIEW SHEET AND HIS QUESTIONS ON THE MIDTERM AND FINAL WILL BE THE FIRST TIME YOU SEE THOSE QUESTIONS. ALSO, BE PREPARED TO DO 120+ MATH HOMEWORK QUESTIONS.
Awful. His lectures are full of errors because he gets too far ahead of himself and tries to rush things through. He will neglect students he dislikes, and unfortunately those are the ones really struggling. Homework assignments are unreal as the first 2 chapters came to a total of 190+ problems on math lab. No review or partial credit for exams.
save your time and money because this guy has no idea what he's talking about. half of the things he teaches in class aren't in the midterm, gives over 200+ problems for homework in mymathlab, doesn't answer students' questions, not willing to help students, his notes are all over the place, makes you more confused at the end class.
His form of teaching is for him to do practice problems on the board and not actually explain everything. Unclear on when the exams are and what they are on. I dont like math, but he made this class extremely diffucult. Assigns way to many pointless homework assignments. I would not recommend
it is once in a blue moon that a professor would make an already difficult subject even more difficult by belittling, neglecting and insulting student intelligence. He makes no sense. He gets mad if you ask him questions. He does all the work without proper explaination. So in the end you fail.
I mean if he fails more than 70% of his class, the department should really reevaluate his teaching skills. Spends his times on the board, deriving equations and doesn't really do problems. The textbook was basically useless. Gives useless homework with a ton of problems that don't seem to correlate with exams. Stay away.
He is the kind of teacher that is only doing it for a paycheck. As mentioned below, he neglects students when they ask for help, so if you are bad at math you will surely fail. Has no office hours because he said "I do not get paid to tutor so dont come to me after class for help"
I dont know which was more difficult to understand. The way he was teaching the material, or how he ever obtained the title of instructor for any subject. Benchode
Linear Algebra - If you attend class and try to follow, then you will probably get an A. I do not understand how people did not get an A as he takes some questions straight form his notes and puts it on the quiz. He doesn't explicitly say, but he gives you questions that will be on the exam and stresses what he finds important. Go to class. Easy A
the only good reviews this guy has is when he taught algebra. but who cant do algebra in college? seriously. his calc class was by far one of the worst courses i ever took in my educational career. he will go down as top 3 worst instructors. and you wonder why hes not in Rutgers nwk anymore. good riddance.
Spent every class more confused that the last. Had a friend tutor me on the material, and it took me 10 minutes to understand concepts that took him 2 classes to teach. Seriously stay away if you can. There is really no point in going to class (except for the fact that he takes attendance) because you have to teach yourself all the material anyway
Spends 25minutes on a single problem per class! Gives no directions just goes straight into solving problems from his notes. He insults your intelligence when you ask him questions. His lectures are full of errors. He confuses himself sometimes. Unwilling to help! Easily top 3 worst professors at RU. Very neglectful of students. Stay away!!!!
He's not THAT bad. Yeah, he does have his quirks but he's straightforward when it comes to exams and assignments. I took him for Linear Algebra and he did an okay job. Wasn't very helpful ("I don't get paid to tutor") but did examples that are similar to exam questions. He's also pretty funny.
This professor is good at teaching in a small class than in a lecture.. Doesn't help, goes over how to derive an equation the whole time, and didn't let us use calculators for the exams. He used to be good when he taught math 109 but idk what happened. Fails more than half of his class; his teaching method should be evaluated by the dept. Avoid.
Do whatever you can to avoid this professor. You'll regret taking any of his classes.
If anyone in the Rutgers Mathematics department is reading this please sit down during one of his lectures and determine for yourself whether this guy is suitable to teach Linear Algebra. He confuses himself almost every lecture, which in turn confuses the students. He does not explain anything very well. Please don't take this professor.
I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews here. Professor Abdi was a great professor for Linear Algebra. He chose very instructional examples to go over in class, was very organized, and the quizzes/tests were challenging in a good way. Also, he genuinely cares about his students understanding the material. I'm glad I took his class.
Had him for Basic Calculus. He's a really nice and funny person, but he goes too quickly with his work. He'll do 10 problems in 5 minutes and the class would be utterly clueless. Expect a quiz after every chapter. He drops the two lowest grades. Three exams. Huge curve. Homework after each chapter on MyMathLab.
Not a good professor goes over and over the lesson with actually caring if you got the material, does not give any review for test and they are tough.
Unable to answer any relevant questions about proofs; resorts to humor instead ("I'm going to make you smarter.") Sometimes cannot justify own operations/solution methods. Uses careless notation that sometimes changes the meaning of the problems. Criticizes students who ask questions of the aforementioned forms. Class counterproductive to learning.
Please do yourself a HUGE favor and don't take him. He's my only C in college. He doesn't explain correctly and has a tough time answering questions. Those that say he is good are probably the 1% that got an A in his class, they probably already knew the material. So please choose someone else over him, I BEG YOU guys.
Yes Prod. Abdi is funny in his own way, but he shouldn't be a teacher , he doesn't know how to teach students who want to learn, if you don't like Calc this course will be difficult he is very by the books. Wouldn't recommend personally.
Took him for a winter class. He is good at teaching but I can see why many dont like his teaching style. Not the best math prof but not the worst. He cares about his students a lot and will make sure you understand the subject as long as you speak up. Like prof always says "its your life on the line, not mine" Textbook is only for hw/ not graded.
Honestly dont listen to ANYONE. He is the worst professor. great human being even funny, but by far the worst professor. Please don't take him I beg you. I wish someone told me that and I'm actually good at math. Save your gpa, save your time save everything, DONT TAKE HIM. I'm a 4.0. I had to work really hard for a borderline B. SO DON'T TAKE HIM
Worst professor I've taken so far. Does not know how to teach a college level course, I take him now for basic calc and he is by far the worst professor I've had. A University like Rutgers should not have someone that doesn't have much knowledge of calc teaching a class. He confuses himself every 3 minutes and doesn't even tell us what we r learnin
We had a 10am class, cleary i was struggling cause this man makes absolutey no sense and often times cant even solve his own problems. Once i waited from 1130-5pm cause his office hours was at 5. Only to tell me he doesnt allow students in his office. "Its for the classroom or tutoring center, i dont get paid for this"
Take him at your own risk. He has trouble explaining concepts and problems so I had to teach myself everything at home. I would suggest having a tutor if you're not good at math. He does give a lot of partial credit though. Definitely not an easy A, but not impossible.
If you ask for help trying to understand something in class, he is more than happy to clarify. I believe he truly cared about his students passing the class as long as you showed effort. I took him for Calc 1 and we had daily homework through my mathlab, and the textbook helped to prepare for exams.
horrible professor. Does not review before exams !!! does not give extra credit. Expects the student to know everything after he teaches it once. Tough grader! Does not go over enough examples in class. simply dreadful.
doesn't review before tests/quizzes. you just have to get to know him, ask a lotttt of questions bc he won't stop otherwise. heavy partial credit. wants to see all his students do well.
you have to be good at math in order to take him. NO CURVE even if the whole class fails. NO review before exams or quizes. Does let u use a calculator.
The whole department is terrible, classes average 40-50 percent failure rates, its typical to take the class twice. I have a feeling this dept is very high revenue generating. Abdi himself is a fair teacher but with exams very hard. HW isn't whats on the exam, and he is a hard grader.
You have to ask him questions before the exam/quiz. Quizzes aren't bad, but the exams are tough. Does want his students to learn and will repeat the topic until you understand it. He does make a lot of mistakes, so watch carefully. He lets you use a calculator. Not that great at explaining, but if you understand, then you will be good to go.
he really sucks he don't explain the problem right until you ask him, he doesn't teach good at all, tough grader care about money, and he always say" say it if you don't understand because i will have my paycheck anyway" exams are very hard. he explains easy problems and when we gave him a hard problem, he couldn't solve it. don't take him
Hes nice and funny. Great for Cal 1. If you ask him questions he will answer. Very helpful during office hours. Not great with technology. Cares about you knowing the information. Occassionally Pop Quizzes so pay attention and be kind, show an interest and you will do fine. Study guides are helpful. Doesnt like playful comments in class and online
I was doing fine until the first quiz and exam. Everyone failed with the exception of maybe 3-5 students. The class asked if we could have a study guide because of how badly everyone failed and he flat out said no. Took out my laptop and dropped the course right there. Any professor who is unwilling to help students should not be teaching at all.
Honestly, this is one of the worst classes I have taken and it is solely because of the professor. He was so unwilling to work with his students and I think a total of 5 students in my class got higher than a C. I got stuck with him because I needed this class but if you get stuck with him, do yourself a favor and withdrawal or drop it.
THIS IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE, HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN AND HAS NO PATIENCE TO HELP STUDENTS, HIS QUIZZES ARE DIFFICULT, HE DROPS TOO MANY POINTS FOR ONE QUESTION, DON'T TAKE IT, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A UNLESS YOU ARE GIFTED.
He said it was his last year of teaching but if you see this afterwards, don't take the class tbh. He gave a quiz every week, the department said apparently. He was a fair grader but does not take criticism well. If you take his class get ready to get nothing from him. He doesn't know how to explain things well and gives soo much homework.
