I have taken this professor for Type1 and ED1. She is very tough but she creates a real-world environment for the classroom. If you really want to LEARN about graphic design and the graphic design world, take her classes! I appreciate her and after I graduate she will be definitely be one of the only professor's I remember.

For anyone who has not taken her yet: Professor Francis is one of the best professors you will find in the Art Department. Although she is strict at times, she is very helpful in giving tons of feedback for your work. If you are serious about design or typography than it would be in your best interest to take every class that Professor Francis offers. She gives honest and accurate feedback (which can only be beneficial for your development ) and offers you some insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment.

Prof Francis is what I call a "serious professor." She tells it like it is and she will help you get to where you need to be. Students will receive a grade deserved based on the amount of work put it. She is strict, but the right kind of strict. If you are passionate about the field of design she is a professor you want to work with.

To me, Professor Francis has a genuine interest in the courses she teaches. This is evident through the feedback and time she spends with each student in class. Professor Francis excels in enforcing professional presentations, ideas, and execution of projects to her students. She sets high standards and expectations to previous and new students.

Francis is one of the toughest professors I know, but my work from her classes (Type1/ED1) have been some of my best. She takes the time to critique every student, and often stays an hour or two to finish. She pushes and challenges every one of her students, and I am able to confidently walk into other design courses after taking her classes.

Prof Francis has given me a gift that keeps on giving! I have tons of clients who think I have the discipline and sense of design to do anything i want. Professor Francis is hands down the toughest professor I have ever had, but I have never been challenged or learned so much in one semester as I did with her in Type 1. She really pushes you to come up with great ideas and she expects nothing less than perfection. Take her if you really want to learn, avoid if you dont have the time to commit.

Type 1 with Professor Francis was the most challenging experience I've had, yet it was fun. You come out learning more than what you came in with. Francis gives out a lot of assignments that push you to be creative, so time management is a must. If you really want a class that'll benefit you in the long run take this class, its worth it

I returned to school after a long hiatus, full time, in addition to full time work. Professor Francis' teaching style definitely puts one through their paces but it is a valuable lesson needed for anyone who is serious about graphic design. I see EVERYTHING differently now. She is proof that those who can do, teach.

Professor Francis os one of the best teachers i have had in this school. she is willing to help you always and wants you to do well in echo and life. she is the real deal she will tell you things straight up for your benefit. This professor is strict but is worth taking her if u are interested in the field. She doesn't bs & she is all about getting the work done. She teaches really well & learn a lot. She doesn't tolerate incomplete work when it's time to critique. U must know the software because she doesn't show u the basic. One negative she she goes over class time.

I think its a shame for a design student to say all she does is humiliate students because when you get out to the real world, ur gonna get a whole bunch of tougher critiques from potential workmates or sometimes not even get the job. She treats u like a designer with a lot of potential so act like one and be one. I HAD HER TWICE IN A SEMESTER.

Loved her class! Yes, Francis is a very strict professor but you will learn a lot from her. She pushes you to give the best in your work. I'd definitely recommend taking her class, the critiques can be tough but for your benefit. Always be on time and if you have questions about a project ask her or email her. She's very helpful.

Professor Francis is the best design teacher in the EDM program. Her critiques are focused and intense, but in the end have helped me become 100% better at design. You need the challenge she provides to grow. Her projects are the best pieces in my portfolio.

Professor Francis is the best professor that I have ever had. She keeps it real so if you need things to be sugarcoated than you can go back to high school or cry at home. She is challenging and gives challenging assignments, pushing students to do better and explore all possible outcomes to a design. Great professor, took her for fall14, she challenges you to find your inner self thru your work. Its not an easy class, but worth it. Shes also passionate about design& makes you more aware of your mistakes. Loved her as a prof even though it was an intense course. Hopefully getting an A.

Professor Francis is funny if you're not too sensitive. She is very helpful with her feedback & teaches you to think. The hardest thing about her class is coming up with a clear concept. Time management is everything; you must finish her assignments on time. If you don't, bring in whatever you have. She basically gives you a taste of the workforce.

I enjoyed my time with her. She does give a lot of work but im not afraid of a challenge. She tends to really push the envelope with students to see how well they can polish their designs. i ended up with great art pieces thanks to her. If you are really passionate about design and want to work in this field i would recommend taking her classes.

I took her class in fall2014. It is a tough class. You'd better be prepared to spend lots of time and redo the projects. Be aware that she is pretty strict with due dates, hand in the homework on time. She is one of my favorite professors because her critique is very straightforward and helpful. The projects are the best in my protfolio. No regret!

No joke. Don't take unless you know InDesign &/or have other "light" classes. She knows her stuff. She's excellent at what she does & will bring your skills way up. You'll love your improvement if E.D. is your future. Put in LOTS of time, & you'll get your payoff. Treat like a professional job, and she'll sing your praises.

An amazing professor that really cares about the quality of work you bring in and helps you improve. She's tough and blunt to save time but nobody will sugar coat things in the real world for you. Do not take this if you're unwilling to work hard and accept criticism. Definitely take this for great portfolio pieces and to learn so much more.

One of the toughest classes I have ever taken but worth the effort put in. Making deadlines are everything and thinking outside of the box is a requirement. Class projects requires at east 4-6 hours per week with average proficiency in adobe indesign. Just making it though the semester will make you into a better designer.

If you DON'T have a thick skin for criticism keep searching. This is a tough love real world training class. Prof. Francis will push you until you get over yourself and produce your best work. If you can thrive in this environment then you can make it as a designer. I thank Prof. Francis for pushing me because Im a better designer for it!

If you want a design portfolio that may actually get you a job after you graduate then take this class with Prof Francis. You have to work extremely hard, but this is the culmination of why you came to college. Be sure to take this class in your final semester or at least your final year so you'll have a strong body of work to build on.

Please do not listen to the hater below. He could not cut it in Professor Francis' class - she's the real deal - gifted artist - Cooper Union - she expects the best and eventually you deliver it. He should kiss her feet!

I usually don't understand the assignments until I see my classmates' work at the 1st or 2nd critique. I wish the assignment were more clear or some samples were shown. That's the way I learn. However, Prof. Francis has her own way of teaching. She won't show you examples because... "to define is to limit"( Oscar Wilde). I respect her.

If you want to make it into the graphic design field, take her electronic design 1 class. It will be challenging and you'll have a lot of homework but trust me the feedback and improvements you will gain as a designer will be invaluable since you will also be competing for jobs against graduates from top colleges from SVA and Pratt.

First of all, I will recommend you to take Prof. Francis' class. It is actually fun, and she is a funny person. Second, she does criticize your work. However, I believe that a designer has to be able to take criticism and then improve. Her class could be very helpful if you are serious .

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Yvette Francis is the only professor who pushed me to improve. She may not coddle you to get a good grade, but cares about her students & stays longer to talk to you one on one if you ask. Show up, put your work in each week and she will like you as much as I like her. My portfolio is 80% of her assignments and improved greatly.

Actually cares whether or not your skills as a designer improve. She doesn't hold your hand, but always asks you to push the envelope. Tough, but if you invest your time in completing the work and making an effort; you'll leave a much better designer than when you arrived.

Unique professor with pros/cons. To simplify, she'll push you to your limit & past it if you can take it. Awesome Prof, you will learn a lot from her class. Professor Francis is a tough grader but there's no doubt if you take this class you'll learn so much about yourself as a designer and how to improve your work. Hard work but if you are willing to put in 100% you will produce pieces you are really proud of. She cares a lot and goes to great lengths to push students out of their comfort zones. She teaches as a true practice and not just a side gig. Although it can be a struggle, consider it practice for the real world with even tougher clients.

I was very afraid coming into this class because of the things I've heard about her, but after taking this course I can honestly say I've been pushed and challenged in ways I've never been before. It's A LOT of work and effort (and sometimes crying lol) but if you're looking to set yourself and your work to a higher standard, take this class.

She's tough. Naturally a very anxious person, her critiques are even tougher but they've pushed me to better analyze my work and do better overall. Never be afraid to ask a question on something you don't fully understand and always use accessible class/email time. Show that you're really trying and you'll pass the class.

I am rating Professor Francis 4 years after graduating from City College. Im writing this most importantly because through my experience on the field I realized how much i valued taking her classes. This class will be a demo of how the real design field is. Prof Francis will be straight up with you about a bad project and a good one when she sees it. This class will push you to your limits and it's not meant for everyone, only for the ones who are serious. You MUST put in your TIME and EFFORT into this class, if you do so you'll be fine.

Be prepared to do work, this is NOT an easy grade, your going to get actually pushed to make something professional, there is no handholding, you will get a lot of feedback and comments, you pace your own self on projects, there's no real deadlines except the final portfolio, so you have to be on top of everything

100% the most difficult design class I've taken. But if you want to succeed and gain insight into the design industry, TAKE THIS CLASS. When it comes to design CUNY does not have the rigor of more elite art institutions, this is one of few classes that tests your skills. A good art class should roughen one up a bit, and this one certainly does.

If you care about the field and want to succeed in it, Professor Francis is great. If you're someone who just wants to take this class for credits, don't waste your time or her time. This is a very serious, project-heavy class. Prof. Francis gives great feedback and cares about the quality of your work. I highly recommend this class to serious ppl!

your field requires you to be consistent in improvement and well-rounded in skill not just a degree to survive. She cares about her field and shows you it. If you just want the credits do not bother taking this class, if you want to be a Creative and understand just how broad that term is and know where you stand on that spectrum then sign up asap.

If you are a full time for work and as a student and needs to maintain an extremely Hight gpa then maybe opt for a different pro only because this class is time consuming. Everything she does is help you so don't be sensitive; Shes fair with what she says and is always open to all questions about the field, her critiques and anything else.

Textbook reading and weekly quizzes About 3 projects HW assignment every week (simple but effort is required) Her class trains you to think not about just creating a design but goes into what works, flows, and makes sense. But she also provides a lot for feedback and insight for improvement but its really just how the field works she takes you outside of the classroom environment to teach you in a way most professors don't because it can be harsh sometimes but she's always real

General a great class. Professor Francis has worked within the field straight out of college so she knows what she's talking about. She can be hard on students but only when she sees you're not applying yourself. The projects are straightforward just get them done early for critique.
