Eccentric!!! Is better one on one. Knows her stuff well just doesn't communicate it well.

tests are impossible...where do questions come from?
If you have the chance to switch out....DO IT!!!!She picks her favourites and the rest of you are screwed! Completely UNFAIR!!!
Brutal and cold-hearted! In exam, you have to write an exactly the same with what she said in class otherwise u'll fail!
Yvonne is very challenging, so if you're not up to the work, don't take the class. Go to ALL the classes and don't wait until the last minute to do assignments. Answer questions and do the reading ahead. It's possible to get an A. She's getting better as the years go by!

She is quite a prof... If you listen to her lectures closely, you will probably get easy B.. If you wanna get A+ you gotta be her favorite, read everything in the book and participate in lectures and never give dumb questions.. n she has problems looking at ppl properly.. but she is funny
Dr. Yuan is an incredible Prof. She has put a lot of effort into coordinating her lecture notes with the labs. She is extremely organized and it shows. Every time I had problems with the material, she was very helpful and clear. Pay attention to her lectures, they are awesome and will be on the exam
I don't know what people are saying, Dr. Yuan doesn't play favourites at all. She even says she goes out of her way to cover up the names when marking to eliminate bias. Just do your work, ask questions, and you will do well. don't need to be a favourite.
Such a hard prof.WATCH OUT!!!
She gave great lectures, and she made the materials easier to understand
interesting lectures... but where did the exam questions come from??! hmm... still tryin to figure that one out
Interesting class...but terribly hard marker on lab reports. NOT APPROACHABLE...(Rousseau is so much better!!) Lab manual isn't clear, and expects us to make lab outlines when parts of the procedure from the manual are missing... what is up with that.
Pretty boring lectures, but very smart woman. Found the final exam rather challenging, but she's a very fair marker and always tries to give extra marks. She's rather awkward but once you get to know her, she's a really nice person! Overall, really good prof would want her again.
Horrible, horrible woman. She tends to ask questions a lot and teases you when you get it wrong. Her assessments are pretty hard (fill in the blank, short ans, MC) and she's a very awkward person overall. Too bad, she's the only professor teaching food science I.
worst prof I've encountered. I'm frightened to ask her questions for fear of being insulted. Worst at running labs. Very condescending and controlling of environment. If you do not do things her way you risk her literally grabbing you and telling you to 'stop right now'. should not be working with people at all. very rude.
Yvonne is the smartest prof I have ever had. Although sometimes difficult to approach, she is such a sweet woman when you give her a chance. Her exams are tough and require a lot of studying, but she is a fair marker and looks to give bonus points whenever possible. I would love to have her again.
She`s a smart woman and knows are stuff really well. However she is awkward and bluntly tells you if you get a question wrong during class discussions. Her mid-terms and exams are quite difficult so make sure you study hard. Labs are an excellent way of bringing up your mark, luckily they are 30%!
Knows her stuff! I really liked having her as a professor. You have to go to lectures to get all the extra information, but she focuses on the text for backup too. Her exams are hard but fair. She's a funny quirky person, she makes me laugh :)
She is very knowledgeable about the subjects she teaches unlike some professors I had before. Her classes are also somewhat interesting and it is quite enjoyable sometimes. However she is a very hard marker, and is very picky about small details when answering short/long answer questions. She is an alright teacher, if only her exams are easier.
Easy class but Horrible professor. Unapproachable, rude condecending!Yes she is smart and is familiar with the material however you can clearly tell teaching is not something she enjoys doing.
The material she covers is interesting, although she's hard to please. It's easy to get on her bad side; that's why she doesn't want you to put your name on the pages of the exam. Awkward personality, her exams are worded oddly and thus tricky, and do laugh at her jokes - it'll make her feel better.
not looking forward to 3rd year..
It felt like first year fnd100 again. It is futile trying to get questions answered by her...especially ones that involve calculations. I like the material... but please change the professor (to someone who actually enjoys being in the presence of students).
She is hard to pay attention to, doesn't clarify questions that are asked about the content very well and defiantly plays favorites
By far the strangest woman I've met. she's very awkward, sometimes funny. She's also incredibly intelligent and really knows the material. However She's an extremely picky marker and is very particular about the smallest of details. Challenging course, but if you go to every single class and review your material periodically, you'll do well.
Classes were torturous (and rather amusing). Make sure to meticulously note every detail, because it will show up for the exams. Textbook is good for further clarification. Unrealistically hard marker. Dyslexics beware. One letter off, and your answer is wrong. FND'ers, sorry, you're pretty much stuck with her. My Advice: stay on top of things. A-
i wish ryerson had a better prof for food science, the course is interesting itself.but taught in a not so fun way!, smart woman but doesn't know how to teach, too quick and expects you to write down every single detail of e in class because her one little sentence may end up being a 5 mark question on a midterm..study well and go to class
NO GOOD !
She is the worst human being that i have ever encountered in my life. Her exams make me want to commit suicide. She is a very unfair marker, even tough she acts like she cares (which she really doesn't). If you have her specifically for your lab instructor, i am so sorry. she butcher's the pronunciation of words which is annoying. good luck.
Such a hard marker. Lab are suppose to bring your mark up, but in reality, it just brings it down. puts every little detail on the exam and doesn't give you any hints. Exam is brutal, so study off your notes thoroughly. Textbook was used like twice in the labs, but never again... don't bother getting it.
As others have said, the material is interesting, but she sucks the life out of it. A very difficult marker, she will take off marks for the smallest of mistakes. Write down everything she says because she will ask about seemingly insignificant details briefly mentioned in lectures.
For lecture: You need to take good notes. Jot down whatever she says. Test is extremely specific, but it isn't hard to do well if you study. For lab: If she leads your lab, arrive before time - marks taken off for lateness. Textbook needed for lab reports. Marks taken off for tiny things. Be really specific. - Interesting course made difficult
What an absolute nightmare. If you happen to have Dr. Yuan during one of her menopausal hot flashes, bring a visor if you sit in the first 2 rows DISCLAMIER: SPLASH ZONE! Physical characteristics aside, as unpleasant of a human to approach as it gets. Attend class and write down every word she utters; you need to know the most minor details.
Need to take explicity good notes... unimportant details will end up on the midterm and final. Textbook was only used for the lab component
tested very specific points that may have only been mentioned once in one sentence in the lecture. Marked very hard for the labs and assignments, taking away marks for incorrect period or comma placements in works cited pages when you would think you are following proper citation methods. Took away marks forincorrect capitalization in titles etc
Interesting course; VERY HARD EXAMS -- even asks about tiny insignificant details she briefly mentioned in class, just to haunt you for no reason. Toughest marker. She knows her stuff though.
Get a upper year mentor and ask them for their lab report. It will be a good reference as long as they did decent on the lab. I also recommend you prestudy the textbook by finding a pdf online. Her course is the only one in 1st year that you need to study extensively for.
She is a nightmare! If you can take the course with another prof. go for it because Yvonne Yuan will give a HARD time.
LOTS of memorizing. Dr Yuan is a good prof, but beware that a lot of tested material comes from what she says in class that is not posted! She tends to bell-curve, however this may not save you from failing. Be prepared to write down everything she says and go to every class. Labs are much easier than the lectures.
Yvonne is intimidating and unapproachable. Her posted slides have little info so write down every word she says as exams need to be detailed to get full marks. She is a really picky lab instructor and the lab reports must also be extremely detailed. The labs should be fun but she made them miserable. The textbook was mostly just used for the lab.
Is nightmare a fair enough word to describe how horrible of an experience it was taking her course? Probably not, you'd need a much stronger word. She'll test you on details she maybe murmured once, she'll humiliate you publicly for having any kind of questions or queries about the course, and don't get me started on the labs. Save yourselves.
Needed this course for my degree and it was not easy. I have a bigger problem with the way she treats her students. She frequently talks down to her students and shows them little respect, it made me terrified of ever asking her questions. I figured things out on my own, but be prepared to put the work in.
She is a difficult but knowledgable prof. The midterm was fair, as she gives quite a bit of guidance. However, the exam is harder and cumulative! Memorize everything if you want an A. Read the textbook if you have time, but mainly focus on the DETAILED notes you take in class. The lab reports must be VERY DETAILED! Small mistakes major deductions
worst prof ever. her course still haunts me. too bad it's a mandatory course.
Very important to attend classes because you need to copy lots of notes
She makes the class much complicated and harder than it needs to be. I find her midterms irrational and poorly written. There is a lot of content so I don't understand why she makes her midterms/exams so heavy-based in short answers and memorization of chemical pathways and equations.
WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. This professor makes everything so difficult it's like she's a spawn of Satan trying to make students hate their lives and most importantly the course. She expects you to memorize everything she says and expects you to know everything for the exam. Watch out cause the fill in the blanks are a lot harder than you think.
She is the most hard prof in School of Nutrition. However, the test is fair as all of the question from the class note, but it is cumulative. The lecture was worst, because it required to filled in blanks and there was no powerpoint expect first 3 classes. The exam is very cumulative and extremely hard. For the lab, she is a picky marker.
make sure to either type or write very fast during her lectures since ANYTHING could be on the exam and midterm. She focusses a lot on the small details in very important concepts. The labs are a bit stressful but fun they can potentially save your mark. The worst class I took the whole year, and she made this class harder than it should have been.
All i can say is, if you have to take this class G O O D L U CK. Toughest part of taking nutrition at ryerson BY FAR. She purposely does not want to see her students succeed. You will leave this class hating ur life and the thought of Food Science alone.
Holy sh*t. This class is the reason why I cant renew my $4000 entrance scholarship. Thanks Yvonne . I hope you see this and realize how miserable you make your students. I dont understand why you think its okay to make your exams so hard, and be such a tough grader. Its FND100 for god sake! The majority of your students hate this class. :)
ALERT: She is the only prof that does NOT give notes and expects you to write down every word she says. If you don't, you will not have any notes and WILL fail. She is hostile, mean, and makes a point to let you know she likes that she is like that. For testing, be aware of fill in the blanks with no word bank and spelling COUNTS. So- know it all.
Professor Yuan is hard to like. She doesnt make students feel inspired to learn. Its definitely possible to do well in her course but you have to WORK. Take detailed notes and study EVERY word that comes out of her mouth. Textbook is def not required, I didnt read a single page (she even tells her students that she doesnt test from textbook).
Despite what other reviewers say, Professor Yuan is actually a very fair prof. She is clear and repeats the important parts of her lectures and tells you things that you need to remember. No slides so you'll have to write down your own notes from a skeleton slide provided. People are just mad they couldn't skip class and get an easy A.
slides are posted but absolutely no midterm/important info is on them. MUST attend lectures, she goes by fast and class with her is scary. gets mad when no one goes to office hours/emails but when we try emailing her, she doesnt reply:) the midterm was a nightmare, class average was low. final was online (COVID),still bad and a partial nightmare GL
Dr. Yuan was one of my least favourite professors to interact with. She is a very unpleasant human as she is rude, but if you attend class and take notes on literally everything it is quite easy to do well. She is a fair marker.
Yuan is mean. She is impatient. She does not answer questions in a respectful manor. She yells at students. She teases students for their answers. She may cover the material well, but she goes out of her way to make this easy course overly difficult. She is not professional. She is rude. Avoid her if you can. She is not worth the stress and effort.
Professor Yuan is hard to like. She talks down to her students, raises her voice when a question is asked during lecture, and seems to have a general dislike of teaching. She makes learning a chore, which is a shame for such an interesting course. Go to lectures to pass the exams, but don't expect to actually learn anything.
The clearest midterms/lecture style ever. She will literally repeat terms/concepts that you will be tested on THREE TIMES and will tell you "You WILL need to know this" when explaining a concept. I don't understand how anyone could be surprised by any of the questions on her exams. Easy A+ if you go to class. People are just bitter they can't skip.
This is one of the worst classes taken! she is so strict in marking and it's actually a blessing if you pass her class. if you are taking this course, pls choose a different prof bc she will make your semester so much harder
Pacing was excellent. She has a very cheerful vibe and I loved attending her lectures. Her tests were extremely fair, but make no mistake that doesn't mean you can slack off. She is clear on what is fair game on a test and will make an effort to repeat concepts and key words. She engages and encourages student participation. Amazing professor
I heard many bad things about her previously, it made me very nervous to take her class. Fortunately, I had a good experience! You need to stay on top of the textbook readings & attend class, but she is a great teacher! Makes it VERY obvious what areas to focus on studying, the tests/exams are fair game, doesnt purposely try and throw you off.
Did not feel respected in this class. Very unpleasant interactions. Hard to like. Hostile at times. Very clear on what to expect on midterms. Lectures: pay attention, nothing on slides, write everything she says. You won't need the textbook. DON'T let your experience with this class make you hate your semester and program
Condescending and rude. Micromanages the labs and instills fear into her students, making sure they don't make any mistakes. Her only redeeming quality is telling you exactly what to study for.
Difficult tests
Gives hilight of what to expect on midterm and exam but most questions turned out to be way more hard and different from what she said. Not enough time for the midterm comparing to the questions you get!
Yuan is extremely rude and condescending. She treats her students as if they were in kindergarten. Study Guide was absolutely useless, textbook is not needed. Just listen to EXACTLY what she says. Tests are unclear, questions are either a sentence or a single word and makes so sense. She yells and degrades students. Do not take her class.
Very rude and disrespectful!EXTREMELY ENTITLED! Don't take the class if you don't have too, save yourself. Midterms and tests are very hard and not very detailed. Passing her class is very questionable.
Very condescending and rude. Have to remember EVERY SENTENCE she says in class for the exams. There's only a midterm and final exam for this course, and it's very hard to achieve a passing grade. Take this course with another prof if you can.
Invest the most time to work on the lab reports because they will be your lifeline to pass. For Yuvan go to class and write every single thing she says or find extensive notes on course hero there is that one that is well-detailed and go to class and follow along with the notes and add what is missing and you. YOU need to write what she is saying
Take this class in the SUMMER... AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS! I had to take it in the fall and ended up with her since I need to graduate, she is not caring, understanding and her lecture content is unclear and all over the place. Overall, her exams are so vague and random, she also doesn't answer questions and redirects you back to readings
absolutely horrible prof doesn't specify anything on midterms or exams
gave us no information on the midterm, making us stay and extra hour and a half after our midterm to listen to her lecture.
Dr. Yuan is the most condescending teacher I know. If I could rate her 0 stars, I would. She assured everyone we were prepared for the midterm, but everything on it she said once in class with no depth or review. She rushed thru topics, gave no explanations, and ignored student concerns. If you want a teacher who actually teaches, look elsewhere.
Extremely Awful, midterms were extremely difficult and no help was provided to prepare for it . Class slides are brief and dont have enough information.
Horrible prof the midterm was extremely difficult half the class was unable to finish due to the amount of time given (15 pages worth of questions; 30 mcq, rest short and long answers; 1hr and 30 mins given) she assured that we would have enough time to finish she was wrong. Her slides barely any info on it so you have to make sure to take notes.
Some people slack off and assume the midterm will be easy because her slides seem easy but that is not the case. Majority of the things on the midterm were said by her during class so you have attend class and write down everything she says. Make flashcards and study them they will save you. I got an 80 on the midterm just by doing this.
She's really not THAT bad. Midterm was pretty fair because she literally tells you exactly what to expect on it so if you aren't going to class and taking notes that's on you, not her. Almost all her midterm long and short answer questions were the same ones she told us to know during class. I'll admit the MC questions are very confusing and hard
This class made me more religious because I prayed for a way out daily. I do not know what I did in my past life to deserve this but IM PAYING FOR IT NOW ALL THANKS TO THIS BUNK CLASS AND PROF
trash class
Puzzled as to why she still has a job here. A very disgraceful and condescending professor. I'm very disappointed with her. Unfortunately, there's typically one section offered for this course each term I believe. Try to take it during spring/summer, fully online, and no Yvonne!
Yuan is v strict and unfair. Quizzes r too difficult 4 quick checks I missed 1 and was told to accept a 0 or shift the weight. She later allowed everyone to drop 1 quiz, confusing! Lectures are simple but tests are v complex mainly long answers. In an ideal world her expectations might make sense. She will make you doubt your worth&capabilities
