Zach is a good teacher to have, we talk about the contemprory reader which seems boring but his comments on the book are intresting. He is a very funny guy, he does assign a lot of essays. We have 5 out of class essays and 2 inclass essays. That sucks cuase i hate essays but its english. Take his class hes not a 90 yrs old woman who had badbreath
hes a funny teacher. good writing class to take!
He is young, but he's very smart and educated- which is impressive. There's 5 out-of-class essays, 2 in-class essays, some easy readings, and typed journal entries. He is a generous person and most of all, he makes everyone laugh. He raises interesting topics with the readings and he listens to everything you have to say. He's a good professor.
He is funny, but he grades hard on his essays and every comment he puts is kind of a sarcasm. All you do in the class is talk a bout the reading which could get broing sometimes.
he's not clear about how he wants his essays
you will not learn how to write better than you already do because he doesn't teach anything.
The last three comments are invalid because those are the students that probably never go to class or actually do the reading. The class itself is actually interesting and his lectures are very relatable and unbiased.. and thats more than I can say about some teachers here. Plus the comments on the papers are only there to help.
I thought i was gonna end up with a B in the class, and then i ended up with an A. If your writing skills are mediocre/good... you should end up with at least a B...funny man... gives you his point of view w/o considering your feelings... love it

Fun class! He's a funny guy and a good teach. I enjoyed the class.
He's pretty cynical, which in turn, makes him pretty funny. The class itself consists of mostly workshop, which is really what writers are interested in anyhow. You also discuss the readings in class. He is very helpful and clear with his assignments. The work isn't bad--two poems every other week, but make sure you know how to photocopy.
Zach is awesome. Hilarious...cynical...but hilarious. May take some students a while getting used to his sense of humor, but eventually most of them will. There is a hell of a lot of reading for this class, but it's to be expected. There are 2 5-6 pg. papers, 1 10 pg. paper which is the final, and 1 very easy presentation. Just take him.
HE IS FUNNY BUT STUPID AT TIMES.He did help me improve my writing. He gives a lot of esays but he is always there to help you out.If you want to improve your writing take him.
Zach is whack. He is so off the wall. He is hard to follow sometimes because he is so random but he helped a lot with writing. He is always there to help and to answer questions.
Awesome teacher. Funny in his own way and very sarcastic at times. He WILL probably make fun of you.
He is an AWESOME professor! One of my favorites. He is very sarcastic and has a somewhat offensive manner that is hilarious. You have to be able to take a joke because he will probably make fun of you. The class enviroment is really chill and easy as long as you do the work. I thought he was a student when I first saw him, hes very young.
His lectures don't really have anything to do with the class, but you really grow to love him! I enjoy going to class, and even doing the readings, journals and essays. He's fun, you should take him! He wants to get distracted from class, basically. haha
extremely interesting, sarcastic, random, and what else? sometimes he bring up things that are so old fashion that i do not understand what he's talking about.he does reiterate the grammars. extremely funny. start out the class with asking you what happen the day before (to waste time). you can rewrite essays after hecorrects them.5outofclass and3
Really cool guy. Sarcastic and cynical, which makes the class fun to be in. Pretty easy grader; really helpful on getting you to improve your writing. Take ENGL 100 with him! Locklin is bomb :)
Amazing teacher. He is totally sadistic, cynical and sarcastic which is what kept me coming to class. Take this professor for English 100!
I have only missed his class once, so it tells you something. Brilliant, funny and challenging. His assignments are pretty challenging but his grading is not, which is one of the things that irritated me. I just want him to tell at least once, your poem is Sh''to people, but he doesnt
hilarious, but doesn't stay on topic but really suggest taking him
You spend 15 min lecturing at the very end. The rest of the time he talks about his music and book interests. Funny guy. Grades tough on essays. But will help in office hours and is flexible with due dates. 4 out of class essays. 3 in class essays. Free Writes every class. Attendence counts. Not bad for english 100
Pretty chill
The best professor I've ever had. I would take his class again just for fun. The lectures/discussions are intellectually stimulating, and I truly enjoyed going to class.
One of the greatest teachers I have had. He is very intellectual but keeps it fun with his humor. He goes off on tangents about music and his personal life. Do the reading (Few books) and the essays will be reasonable. He is a tough grader, but I highly recommend taking his class!
funny and way random. he will go on tangents about pretty much anything. i liked to going 2class just to hear what he had to say. you have 4 out of class essays and grades pretty fair. u can revise every essay for a much better grade. hes really helpful if u go to office hours. you have novels to read but you can still get by w.o readin them.
A great class, I learned a lot. You will get an A or B if you do all the poems, but he also does provide feedback and help you improve as a poet. You will probably be annoyed or frustrated at some point because his personality is crazy and he goes off on tangents, but I personally loved him and thought he was hilarious. I would take him again.
Locklin was an awesome teacher. He keeps you entertained and ACTUALLY teaches you how to write a paper. Attendance is mandatory but that really isn't an issue because he was enjoyable to listen to. No tests, only essays (about the books you read). If you don't like the score you get on an essay you can rewrite it and he will help you do that.
Essay questions are some what difficult. all based on books read but he you dont really need to FULLY read the whole book. 5 out of class essays (you can revise every one of them expect the final one) and 3 in class essays. Pretty easy. He's hilarious. =D in the end you're Definitely a better writer
I thought it was a very useful class. The professor was absolutely hilarious, and the books weren't so bad, except Fear and Trembling. He's always open to helping you, but he also expects you to understand that your grade isn't his life. I enjoyed his class, and it was relatively easy provided that you make good arguments in your essays.
I actually enjoyed the class most of the time. His lectures were sometimes boring but were meant to help with the essay, he would always talk about random things though and kept it interesting.i actually enjoyed the books and he lets you revise your essays for a higher grade.Cool guy.
zach was a really good teacher. having him as your first english teacher in college really gets you finally going. but after the class is over you step back in reality with the bring robot teachers.
Amazing class! This professor was the best teacher I had had in years! He taught me so much about everything English related. I'm going to take another one of his classes! An easy A and very interesting
Hes pretty strange but overall a good teacher. He likes to rant about random stuff but its entertaining. He knows what hes talking about & if you need help ask! I never read the books all the way through & got a B on them. Essay topics tend to be difficult. You can revise your essays for better grades & you are able to miss up to 4 of his classes.
You'll do well in this class if you actually like/understand the books. There's four 3 to 5 page essays and a couple in-class essays. His lectures were weird...he's pretty crazy but he's got some good taste in music
he is one of the most interesting teachers i have had. he makes class very fun and sociable. there is no text book required just five books that we have to read. There are a total of four out of class essays; they are a bit difficult but he gives you the chance to revise it for a better grade after he grades it. definitely recommend him=]
I got C's on my papers, so I have no idea how I got an A in the class. I'm still in shock. He must've liked my final project or something. Rly interesting readings.. completely diff books assigned than any other English course I've ever taken. Although he does go off topic a lot, it's funny to listen to. Hes the only memorable prof I've had all sem
He is a great teacher. He will help you with your writing and tell you what you need to change. Ever since I took his class I felt that I can write more clearer.
i LOVE this man. He has great material for you to read, take his class -- he will become a life long friend/mentor.
He really wants his students to succeed and admits that he doesn't like to give students less than a C. He is very enthusiastic in his lectures
Zach is a quirky, strange, and very extroverted individual who is very fun and intelligent to be subjected to. Our women's studies class was apparently the first he taught & he did an amazing job. LOTS of literary theory, he'll blow your mind
Oh, Locklin. The man is NOT politically correct in any way, so don't take him if you don't have a sense of humor. He's kind of old school for such a young instructor, but you will definitely learn quite a bit about the second half of the canon!
good class, interesting teacher. can grade hard on essays and his quizzes are difficult. he openly admits that the essays and the quizzes are not designed for good grades, but he structures the class so that you can still pass despite the bad grades you will probably be getting on the quizzes/essays.
He isn't your cookie cutter teacher, but is awesome nevertheless.
Inappropriately funny - my favorite! Jokes and tells stories 50% of the 2hrs, so if you wanna be in and out, this isn't the class for you. So approachable, esp. if you know your pop culture! Do the readings and you should be fine; it's easy to fall behind if you miss even one day's worth of reading! Final/midterm harder than the 3 essays.
The class itself was not difficult, you basically just write essays. There is no final exam. I disliked him, however, because he was very strict about attendance but he would never start class until at least 30 minutes after the class started. He was critically and talked too much about his personal life. I would never take him again!
Despite his sarcasm and negative attitude about people and the world (he's mainly joking most of the time), he was a wonderful teacher. Communicates and teaches very well. Only writes about about MONSTERS (i.e. Frankenstein, Dracula, Zombies, etc.). Typical English 100 class.
What an ADORABLE creature he is. Quite possibly one of the funniest people I have ever encountered. Great person and great teacher.
He is one of the funniest professors that I have encountered. He is brilliant and very easy going. Often goes on tangents, but they are worth noting. He is a stickler on papers and attendance.
Do /NOT/ buy the green Engl Studies book. He posts PDFs online. Waste of ~$30. Other books are used throughout the course. He tries to keep it interesting. Succeeds usually. Didn't seem very welcoming when it came to asking for help on papers. Grade is based off of participation, presentation, two papers, final, and an annotated biblio.
Proffesor Locklin is the best poetry teacher I've ever had - in face I've never had a poetry teacher! His class is easy going and you get to just let the ideas flow. Check out this class if you want to kick back, laugh, and express yourself. Great teacher :)
At first, I abhorred him. He talked down to students, spoke in 3rd person, was rude and sarcastic--but, then I grew to enjoy it. He takes some getting used to, but when I did, the class was easier to get through and he was a nice and understanding guy. The essays can be difficult, but he is a fair (not easy by any means) grader. I'd take him again.
Professor Locklin is one of those rare gems that if you're lucky, you'll find at least once in your academic career. He's funny, but in a completely inappropriate way. He's a tough paper grader, but only because he wants you to push the limits of your abilities and do better than you ever realized you could. I appreciate his teaching style! Take!!
I took Locklin for a 1 Unit Pre english course because of my grades for the EPT. Although it was not a full class, Locklin became one of the best teachers I've had. We didn't do much so he spent a lot of time ranting about things from Starbucks to David Bowie which was hilarious. And my writing skills improved in a matter of weeks! Highly recommend
Professor Locklin is an amazing teacher! He clarified all my questions for me and helped me with my paper topics. He is very understanding and gives great feedback. Grading is tough but it's a college course, students should be working harder. He gives students the opportunity to revise their papers for a better grade so take advantage of that!
Lectures are only long because he goes off the on the funniest tangents. Seriously, one of the best professors I've ever had. He's tough, but he makes class fun. It's nice to have a teacher you could talk to. However, this class is not easy. Three big papers and a presentation! Do your work, and you'll be fine.
can re-do every out of class writing assignment except final. 4 out of class essays - B, B, A, B 3 in class - B, B, B some in class short writing (creditno credit) 5-10% Ended up with an A. Only God knows how but I'm beyond grateful for this. Would take again.
He's a great professor. Take his class if you want an easy A, B. Don't buy the textbook, you don't need it. He really does help students with writing their essays. I'd take this class again!
He's.... an interesting character. He gives out several out of class essays, which you can redo again for a better grade which is nice. His in class essays are alright. If you do decent on the essays and turn in all of the random work he has you do, it's an easy A. Don't buy the english textbook!
Hilarious professor. Looking to knock out a GE once a week in a 3 hour lecture? This is the class to be in! Teaches well and creates a community in the class. You can basically write however way you want for half of the poems and as long as you follow the form for the rest of the poems, you will get an A. Lucky to be in his class!
He says that on beachboard he isn't allowed to give a 1010, he has to give a 9.8510. It's really weird since not even for perfect attendance you can get a 1010. He won't round your grade even though you're super close to an A or B. He's super funny and makes you enjoy class! He's just a hard grader for a GE class but take his class!
Locklin's a decent professor and hilarious! He's picky about formatting, but allows you to revise your papers for a better grade. Definitely read his feedback, it really helps! Easy B, need to nail his take-home essays to get an A in the class since he does not round up.
Hilarious and so fun to talk to. Very open minded and will really help you understand the work-maybe even from a point of view you didnt anticipate.
Locklin's really a great guy! I have him for 205, and it's a really relaxed class. We spend about the first 20-30 min. of class chatting, but it's cool. He gives really good feedback on the stories you write for the class too, and is pretty lenient about the stories, margins. etc. for this class. Good class for some credit.
At first I thought I'd hate him because he talked about absolutely nothing. After a few classes everyone was comfortable with each other and it became the funniest class I've ever had. Locklin talks about nothing and everything and the same time and is so open to whatever anyone has to say. He really is one of those rare gems you find in college.
Professor Locklin is easily the best professor I've ever had. He is hilarious and sarcastic but really cares about his students and will ALWAYS help you. His essays are very clear but he is a tough grader, you can redo any paper for a better grade though. 10/10 would take him again.
This prof rarely talked about the course and he rants every time. No tests, all essays. The first essay he goes easy and lets us revise and turn it in for a better grade. Doesn't use beachboard so you need to calculate your grades. He emails back asap.
Easy B but if you put in effort and have him see it, he's more than happy to help! Attendance can help your grade. I got a B on every essay and never missed a single class period but in order for me to get an A in the class, I needed an A on the final essay. Overall, he's a funny guy and I enjoyed taking his class!
Locklin is huge on sarcasm, and is very easy going in class; most of the time we don't even discuss what we were supposed to read. However, once he grades your papers it's not completely smooth sailing. Make sure you put effort in, this isn't a class you just skip on through
There were 4 take home essays, inwhich he let us revise until we got the letter grade we wanted, and 3 in class essays. He always gave really good feedback and was very nice and helpful. In the beginning he might seem pretty weird, but he's very funny and sarcastic after you get to know him.&I only used the book for essays. I would take him again!
Cool teacher but he may not be for everyone. I really enjoyed our discussions in that class and hearing about students' crazy lives. Overall pretty cool class
Zach is a cool guy and very funny. But, his funny cynical personality does get tiring. He goes off on a lot of tangents. I felt like I barely learned anything about poetry. Attendance matters. Grade based off 3 papers. Doesn't explain how to write your paper but tells you how not to write it. I didn't learning much but cool teacher.
3 take home essays, all referencing how to use one technique to analyze essays. avoid 5-paragraph essay style. he teaches you a whole new way to write. Hard grader, but a fun and easy-going teacher. class is relatively easy, minus the tough essay topics. especially the creative poetry for the final! but ask for help, and he'll go the extra mile!
AWESOME TEACHER! I have never been very fond of English classes, there were 3 major essays and 3 minor, however, the major essays were based on movies seen in class, the theme of the class/movies were monsters, you had to write on how the monsters related to humanity. on the minor essays i wrote always wrote on Godzilla and passed with a B,
Locklin is an interesting creature. The tangents in class can be pretty annoying becasue that is valuable time where he could be telling students how much they suck as writers. He jokes a lot, but is actually funny. Tough and very specific with what he wants, but talking to him in person is extremely helpful. Easy to pass, but hard to get an A
Don't take this class if you want to learn very much about anything useful.
Worst professor I had because he could not control his tangents. Learned very little
He went of topic, ALOT !
Locklin might sound like all he does is ramble but if you actually listen to his lectures, you'll find they are as stimulating as they are hilarious. In my opinion one of the more phenomenal professors I've had. He's a tough grader but gives you all the feedback you need to succeed. Sets very clear expectations. Replies to emails immediately too.
He makes the setting comfortable for those that are not familiar with writing poetry. He goes off on a lot of tangents, but overall the class was pretty fun.
Very cynical, dry, humor.
He has a very dry sense of humor. If thats not your thing you should maybe try another prof, but Locklin is still one of the best professors Ive had during my college career. Finally, an English class that actually helps you improve as a writer. He allows revisions for essays, and gives you all the feedback you need to get that A.
Locklin is a great professor. His humor is dry and he oftens goes on tangets, he talks the whole time so class can be boring at times. He is a very fair grader and allows revisions, and is just easy going in general. I had to miss class for personal reasons and he gave me ample time to submit my essay and even sent a very nice comforting email.
He talked a lot about politics and just went on rants 24/7. His class is pretty easy but then again he kind of grades his papers hard.
A little too laid back for me. First 30-45 mins of every class spent rambling about who-knows-what. Funny dude, makes fun of his students a lot (hope you're not insecure). You get points for the quizzes just by doing them, but he's surprisingly tough on essays. Felt like I always wrote exactly what he didn't want.
A very good teacher. His class is sometimes boring but he is funny. Don't buy the book he says you need it but you don't. Revisions are very hard to get a better grade on
If you're looking for an easy A, then take any Eng LD class Locklin teaches. He has an extremely dry humor and makes fun of everyone and everything. Spends the first 20-30 minutes ranting about whatever but lets the class rant as well. Once half an hour passes, he actually does lectures and can teach you some valuable stuff. super laidback.
Locklin is one of the most down to earth professors I've had at CSULB. He creates an open space to just talk to one another. This was a workshop class so it may be different in a lecture. He was very attentive during the COVID-19 situation and I felt like he'd be totally understanding if you brought up any hardships.
He made poetry super fun. He basically gave us 9.9/10 on all our poems because he understood this was an entry class and we were all trying our best. He gives clear instructions on new poem structures and examples. You don't even have to participate because he gets people are shy. You do share poems but it's online so it is not scary at all. Love!!
Ok guy, kinda weird and overshared a lot which made class awkward not gonna lie. Easy class if you do the work which was very very light, only graded on about 10 poems and 3 discussion posts for each poetry book we read. The class moves very slow as everyone has to share their poems with the class and get peer review from them.
Great prof who actually cares for the mental health of his students. Easy to reach via email, will work with you to make sure you do good in his course. Lectures are a bit long sometimes but he makes them funny. There were 4 books to read and 4 essays, some reading responses but nothing too time-consuming. Take this class!
He's super chill, but he talked a lot abs his issues during lectures. But we still learned a lot about poetry somehow. He managed to teach us the process of writing it. He is very sarcastic! He'll probably hate your essay, but he will most likely give you a B or a C. He doesn't mind late work at all. I got an A on the final essay, & I was shocked!
This is a great course if you are looking for a relaxed course. Professor grades fairly (I wouldn't say he grades leniently) and gives clear instructions for what he wants. He is very blunt and will tell it how it is grading. Lectures can go off-topic but if you don't mind that then I have no complaints. He is a great guy and a good professor.
He's a really great guy. His humor is super dry, but it makes the lectures entertaining. The work isn't to bad you can turn in late work whenever with no points off. He's really understanding and gives great feedback. He does tend to ramble, but it's not so bad, and there is valuable info in the lectures.
Very tangential, and rarely about anything related to the class. Felt like I learned very little about the actual class subject. Still, a nice guy who cares about his students. Gives good feedback and is generous with extensions. Workload is reasonable, 5 essays total. Would really only recommend him if you're confident in your writing abilities.
I absolutely loved having Professor Locklin. He has a great sense of humor, and has a knack for making lectures interesting. He always gave rich feedback on my work submitted, which helped me improve throughout the semester. Very accommodating and understanding of external situations. As long as you do your work and put in effort, you'll pass!
Honestly a really cool professor! Take him!
Professor Locklin creates an engaging class with a great sense of humor. Even for a poetry workshop, he makes it comfortable for all. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for test prep.
Locklin was really funny, interesting, analytical, and was pretty much himself. The class is definitely skippable and you won't suffer any consequences. But to be honest, I only showed up because he was fun to listen to. The readings were pretty interesting and long, but what do you expect from a college class? Comics were chill. very good job.
The class is really easy and Professor Locklin is a chill guy. He accepts late work and does a good job building rapport with students. The assignments are easy and actually kind of fun if you enjoy writing or reading poetry. It might be better to take this kind of class in the afternoon or after 9. I would take another class with Locklin.
