i am a freshmen here, and he is the first professor who wasn't boring. he told us he is new here in st.johns.
Zachary Davis is the man, he really cares about his students, not very demanding for a core class, which is the way it should be. 3 essays, 1 term paper. NO FINAL, MIDTERM, OR ATTENDENCE. But you should still show up to class because everyday is a whole new experience. You're basically guaranteed to pass the class as long as u show some interest. 1
HE IS THE MAN! Easy to learn, comprehensible and fun. Just come to class and listen to what he says and write that in to your paper for a easy A++. Attendance is not mandatory and notes are not mandatory. But he looks favorably towards participation. He also gives good grades for the Paper (if you write what he talked about) and is fun to listen to
Hes so boring and lazy. Does not care about his students. I guess all of these other rating are for kids who study all day but if you want a reasonably easy class do not take him.
He is an absoultely amazing teacher!! He makes sure that you understand all of the material that is discussed in class. Several in class essays which are easy, if you attend and pay attention. Three longer papers and a final paper, whose topic is basically left up to you. Even if you are not a philosophy major, you will enjoy this class. He wants y

Simply AMAZING.. Listen to his Wisdom and life experiences, and I assure you you will learn a lot!
THE coolest professor you'll run into...very down-to-earth...time flies when you are in his class...keeps the class very interesting... Highly recommend it! (even if Philosophy is not your major)
he is the best teacher ever. he makes class fun and jokes around and relates to his students so much. if you ask for open book tests he gives it to you and you get the questions before the test. great professor def take him!
i loved this class! he is always joking around and very laid back and makes sure you understand everything. def take this class you will not regret it!
he's really down to earth and very helpful, though sometimes his classes aren't very structured(more discussion than info), but that's most probably due to the subject material (phenomenology...)rather than him. great class, subversively convincing themes (though i didn't actually like the philosophasters we studied), constant but light workload.
omg Zach Davis is the best teacher for Phi 1000C hands down. he cracks me up, and he's not bad to look at either! He gives work consistently, but it isn't hard or boring. He makes the class very interesting, so TAKE HIM!
Great professor. Most people really aren't interested in philosophy, but he actually does a good job getting the students to enjoy it. Class is pretty easy, because he is so laid-back. One pretty easy essay and simple quizzes. He doesn't care about attendance although is does show up a little in your grade. Overall great guy, very handsome too!
Professor Davis is great, pay attention ask questions and make sure you do the reading. No need to buy text books, very laid back and a couple of quizzes with easy final. He will actually make you think which is good, remember in philosophy you really cant be wrong just explain your answer's base don the class material.
Hands down, one of the best professors at SJU. As others have said, he's very laid back and his lectures are pretty interesting. We had to do 3 papers, no midterm, no final, and attendance wasn't mandatory. Oh, and he's hottt!!! Take him!
Awesome professor! Lectures are more like discussions. Very chill and laid back. Very fair grader and makes funny jokes every now and then. He's pretty new to the university. Great lecturer and oh, he's pretty and fun to look at :-D
Zack is amazing, knows his stuff. unlike mot professors he doesn't force-feed us the material. he's laid back, and really gets you into a course that would otherwise give you brian cramps. no, he's not bad to look at but more importantly he treats everyone as adults, that does matter. there are 7 short answer quizzes all take home, only one paper.
he is a great teacher. I was not excited about Philosophy but I actually enjoy this class. It is more like a discussion/argument. Dr. Davis does not force you to memorize facts and ideas but encourages you to form your own. Plus, there is no text book which saves a lot of money. Definitely take him!
This guy changed since I last took him. He canceled like 2 weeks worth of classes, and then expected us to write a 10 page paper and a final exam as well. Lectures are pointless, he goes off on tangents and hardly teaches anything. For those of you who are actually paying $$$ for tuition-don't take him, you will just be wasting your money. Avoid.
Class wasn't very interesting. Had a take home mid term(two essays), a 10 page paper, and an in class final. Attendance isn't mandatory.
Had him for modern phil, this guy sucks. His lectures are boring and he starts talking about random things (which was worse at 9am in the morning). Gave a take home midterm (okay), ridiculous 10 page paper and a final. For someone who hardly taught anything, he's a pretty harsh grader. Try to take someone else if you can.
Honors - 3 Major Papers (1 final) No textbook. Really laid back "chill" guy but tough grader. It takes good reading and solid effort on the papers to get an A. Not easy but worth it if you are willing to put in extra effort to get a lot out of a class.
Extremely laid back teacher! Very nice and funny! I actually learned alot in his class. I thought that the class would be boring but he is such a great teacher! I think we had to write 2 essays that he gave us all the info for. Participation is a must if you want an A.
GOOD PROFESSOR 1) chill laid back guy 2) allows laptops in class 3) kind of a tough grader 4) allows you to revise papers 5) 3 papers and a few homework assignments 6) participate 7) he is kind of boring sometimes, and sometimes hilarious A GOOD choice to understand philosophy on a basic level.
Very laid back and chilled. Somewhat of a tough grader but he allows revisions. Can be boring at times, but hes also funny every now and then. Take him he's an amazing professor. He actually cares about his students unlike some of the other professors at STJ.
(online class) - very demanding. usually 2 assignments per week and you have to write A LOT to get a 5/5. there are easier philosophy online teachers. however, he is helpful and explains the grades he gives.
Online class. Readings and discussion questions weekly and you have to respond to another person's discussion 4-5x a week. One paper for midterm and another for final. Nothing else. If you do the work, you'll get an A.
The dude is absolutely chill and has so much swag. He's the man. If you have a brain take his class.
He's the best. just take the class
Zach is the chillest professor at STJ, handsdown. His class isn't an easy A, but you'll appreciate his thought provoking discussions. If he picks on you, he likes you. Come to his class, do his assignments, and you should be fine. He's a little bit of a tough grader, but gives you opportunity to improve. Great professor and guy in general. Take him
Not a terribly hard class. Go to class, pay attention and take good notes. Understanding professor who likes to talk with students and help out. Highly recommend this professor, very little work and only two essays
really good teacher , explains stuff well only 2 essays , not boring and he lets u do whatever in class but pay attention and take notes on his 2 papers
The best!! He's so laid back and funny, and he makes the course interesting. Plus no textbook.
Good professor. Decent online professor assignments two times a week midterm paper and final paper. Nothing too bad
really good professor, explained alot with clarity and super cute
awesome professor
Zach is amazing!!! He's a really great guy. This was one of my favorite classes and I have NO INTEREST in philosophy! But this class was fun! He sets such a comfortable environment by making his students laugh a lot. There is no textbook, there are no quizzes, tests or a final exam!! I recommend that you do come to class and take notes.
GREAT CLASS AND GREAT PROFESSOR JUST TWO PAPERS AND NO TESTS. EXPLAINS A LOT AND MAKES EVERYTHING CLEAR
Prof Davis is simply amazing! Love him and his class. He makes Philosophy so much fun and is constantly challenging you to think. He always asks why! A decent amount of homework is given (reading and questions), attendance isn't mandatory but you should always go (he gives in-class assignments which aren't hard but cannot be made up) TAKE HIM!
if you graduate without taking this professor, your doing it wrong
One of my favorite professors at St.John's. I never had an interest in Philosophy but he made it fun. He really cares about explaining things to you. H.W was daily but it helped me with the material. Great guy!
Honestly, I really wasn't too excited to take this Philosophy class, but he makes it interesting and so much fun! He makes everything understandable and he helps you form an answer even if you don't understand. Not too bad to look at either. ;)
He's not big on attendance, but that's all a trick! lol.. YOU HAVE TO BE THERE TO GET ALL OF THE NOTES OR YOU WILL NOT PASS! All of the notes and homework will be used for the midterm paper and the final paper! He's nice and funny (at times), but can irritating and sidetracked (sorry not sorry). This class is an easy A if you work hard and show up!
Prof. Davis is excellent. I really wasn't looking forward to philosophy but he made it a great experience. Your grade basically consists of two papers and weekly homework and in-class assignments.
Teaches practical issues and allows lively discussions
Prof. Davis is simply the best. He gives out assignments almost every class but the assignments are helpful towards the midterm and final, which are take home essays. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you do miss a lot of useful notes and discussions that help with the midterm and final. I wish he taught more philosophy classes at SJU.
If you haven't taken Dr. Davis before graduating, you missed out on the perks of being a college student at SJU. Excellent lectures, not boring at all. Had him once a week for 3 hours. Reading assignment may be long but interesting (I am not a fan of philosophy). HW straightforward, goes over in class. Just essay-go to him, he'll help! MUST TAKE!
Professor Davis is really cool. Not really into philosophy but he made the class interesting and I took it for 4 credits for study abroad 1 week in Rome. A decent amount of homework, not difficult. No tests, no midterm or final. Just 2 papers and he basically outlines what you need to do. Easy enough, spent most of the classes on discussion.
Took this class online. 2 assignments a week but you have to work hard to get full credit on them. A midterm and a final paper. No textbook. He gives you all the readings. His syllabus is clear and he is very helpful. It's a decent amount of work but definitely manageable! Take him.
He's amazing! would defiantly take again. Very laid back and helpful.
writes back to your emails fast and is willing to help if you have any questions his online class is not bad at all
I took the online class for Prof. Davis and it wasn't too bad. There were only two essays( midterm and final). He posts documents to blackboard with notes where he explains everything which makes the papers easier to write. There are discussion board postings twice a week which aren't bad at all. Emails feedback on your postings as well.
Excellent professor. Philosophy is a heavy course but Dr. Davis goes above and beyond to make it comprehensible. Will definitely take him again in the future.
Good lectures with discussions. 4 papers. No in class exams. the only hard thing was that it was a Wednesday class which lasts for 3 hours. Highly recommend and will take again.
This was Seminar Class on Alienation. Good overall with some interesting discussions. 7 critical summaries on readings, presentation about final paper and a final seminar paper 3000 words. Highly recommend Dr. Davis.
While the subject matter of itself is tough, Dr. Davis clarifies and simplifies everything so that you have a better understanding. He emails very fast and is also helpful during his office hours and in his emails. If you put in effort and show that you care about your work, you will get the grade you want. Highly recommended.
Prof. Davis is a great professor who is knowledgeable about the materials. This was an online class. Online discussions based on the readings assigned and 2 critical essays on the assigned readings. He gives great feedback on your discussion postings and on your essays. He responds to email very fast. However, you have to work hard for you grade.
He explains a tough material well. There are two papers for this class and they are fairly lengthy, but doable. You will have a good laugh in this class because he is hilarious. I highly recommend.
Prof. Davis is a really funny teacher. His class is basically a place for people (mostly him) to vent about their problems. He does have a slight obsession with squirrels, so don't mention them too much otherwise he will go on a rant about them. Reading the passages he gives is important because if you don't, you won't pass.
Easiest class ever. He talks a lot and makes the class very entertaining. Goes over homework and gives you a clear outline for papers.
Doesnt clearly explain to his student what exactly he is looking for. I got a poor grade on my paper and when I asked how he graded to maybe know what I did wrong, he simply said I am unable to comment. You did not follow the clear instructions I gave. Seems like a nice guy in class but can be anal
Took Zach last semester, received an A. This teacher KNOWS WHAT HES DOING. He's great. My major is philosophy. He's funny in class and he relates class to the outside world. He gives 2 papers and his grading criteria IS VERY CLEAR. He is available outside of class. He doesn't make you do anything unnecessary. There are no unnecessary assignments.
Professor Davis is the best this course was a hybrid so on the day of class we had a ws due and on the other day we had a discussion board posting online, besides that 2 had two papers due that counted as the mid-term and final they are a little long but he tells u exactly what he wants on it he's really funny and caring would take him again!!!
Loved this guy. Integrates real world issues into philosophy really well. Understands the struggles of college and doesn't care when you have to miss class. Assignments are common but don't feel like busy work. Take him! Looks like Dr. House and Nick Cage.
This was one of my best classes the entire semester. Class was only on Tuesdays and Friday we had an online discussion post due. Doesn't take attendance but requires you to do the work on your own time. Gave just a few assignments and 2 papers, the last one counted as the final.
On Tuesdays we met for lectures w/ an assignment due and Fridays discussion board posts & mandatory replies are due. Discussion board posts weren't that hard but are often times quite involved if you want to receive full credit. For the 2 papers, just do some draft in advance and ask him to review it! He gives great feedback and genuinely cares.
He's kinda boring but it is a philosophy class, you don't have to go to his class after the first day if you don't want to. He only takes attendance that first day. You get discussion posts on blackboard and reading responses every week. They aren't hard just don't forget to do them. No test or quizzes either.
I took Dr. Davis online during the summer. He uploaded all the reading. everyday we had to upload a discussion board and reply to at least one person. There was also a midterm and final paper. Grades the discuss. board from 1-5 and gives good feedback. I got a B on the midterm paper and an A on the final and ranges of 4 and 5 on the discuss. got A
I took Professor Davis over the summer. He uploads everything onto blackboard. There are the discussions and one paper. He was so helpful if I didnt get something. He sent extra material so I could better understand the topic I wasnt grasping. If you have a chance to take him, do it.
I took this class in Summer Session 1. All the readings are uploaded on blackboard, and his class notes. Discussion board questions due day of reading. He grades a little harshly, you have to constantly write to get the full five points. There are two papersmidterm and final paper. My midterm was 24 pages and my final was 11 pages. I did great.
I loved having class with him. I knew philosophy wasn't going to be a fun class, but he made it so it wasn't as awful as it should be. He is very laid back and understanding no matter what your circumstance is. He makes it an effort to get to know each and every student personally. Homework was so simple, also.
The best class I've taken at St. John's. He is interesting to listen to - witty, slightly sarcastic, amazing voice, great sense of humor. Makes discussing philosophy more relatable. The assignments really make you think about the material, so even though there are no tests you'll finish with a good understanding of Western philosophers.
hes amazing!! please take him!!
A textbook is required, but I honestly winged my assignments on the class notes he post before. There is reflection 1 pg paper and discussion board due every week. It's not hard if you just do that little work. He loves to hear everyone speak, which can be tiring when you just want him to teach the material. He's awesome tho!
Really good guy and really good class. Grades are by weekly discussion boards and two essays throughout the semester. One of the only classes that I actually enjoyed attending. I really liked him and would highly suggest taking.
TAKE HIMMMMM. He makes Philosophy so easy!!! Only a midterm and a final and discussion posts every week. I never thought I would say I learned something from Philosophy.
Great lectures kept to the point/entertaining. Gives individual feedback so you are prepared for the papers overall low amount of work involving discussions and papers.
I took this in the summer 2021 and had a blast! His notes are really helpful for discussions and papers. Weekly discussion Mon-Thurs and just 2 papers. His syllabus clearly tells you what he wants in each paper. So just follow those guidelines and you'll be fine. At first I was terrified to take PHI, but he made is so much more bearable and easy!!
Understandable lectures and appreciates feedback, genuinely cares about students
Professor Davis is a must take if youre into philosophy or not, he makes it easy to understand and interesting! Homeworks are a lot, but theyre fun to do since theyre engaging and gets you thinking. Hes extremely chill and funny. He also has an interesting approach to his job, he wants to learn from the students rather than the traditional way
Super chill professor who wants to learn from his students in addition to wanting to teach us. He's passionate about what he speaks about and discussions are actually super interesting (unlike most other philosophy classes). Weekly short assignments that the discussions are based on and essays for the midterm and final.
Chill professor who is interested in what his students have to say during discussions in addition to wanting to teach us. He's passionate about his lectures and tries his best to make them relevant. Work consists of weekly homework assignments, an in-class assignment, and 3 exams (short essays). He gives plenty of time to get assignments in too.
Easy class. 3 short essay exams, weekly homeworks and in class assignments. Zach makes it all easy to understand and class discussions were lively and fun. Readings for homeworks were long and a little confusing, but as long as you try on the questions, he gives you full credit.
Chill teacher who wants to hear from students. Highly informative and motivating lectures. Coolest philosophy professor you're going to meet.
What an amazing professor! I had his class once a week and it was my favorite. The homework assignments are weekly and easy. Try to participate, it will make the class fly by. He is calm and understanding, and his passion for philosophy will make you think. I learned more from his work than from my other classes. I definitely recommend taking him.
Doesn't make attendance mandatory. Weekly assignments that he goes over in depth in class. Funny and likes to joke around with students. Definitely a calm, understanding, and laid-back professor!
Zach is the best! He is more like a friend than a teacher, he will help you anytime you need! He gives one reading response every week which is like only one page, but is quite easy. He is also very lenient. If you see his name pop up for any of your classes, take him!
Amazing lectures, talks to you as a peer, not a professor. He makes philosophy relate to the real world and everyday life. Lectures are in the form of discussions. Weekly assignment sheet to lead discussions but super easy to complete and graded easily as well. No textbook req and the final/midterm were take-home essays
Very good professor. Philosophy is difficult but he makes it understandable. Provides all the reading material to you, no purchases necessary. This was a hybrid course, although attendance isn't mandatory, he gets you ready for the 3 essays and the weekly discussion posts (12 total), so I recommend attending! His grading is fair, put the work in.
Good Professor not a lot of work 3 essays and a weekly reading response
for a philosophy class, his lectures are great. not boring at all and he's very entertaining. no homework, just writing assignments given at each class that you write and hand in at the end of class. he provides links to all the readings. overall hes chill and hes funny.
He is a good professor, but can call on you randomly in class which I hated and he catches you off guard but other than that you just had to attend class and this is a hybrid course where the online portion is reading the texts but you have to be in class and there's a paper every week to answer questions kinda confusing
