He's ok but its very hard sometimes when he explains things. Its like he over complicates things for no reason.
Definitely loves math but sometimes loses himself in the specifics of a problem. If you like math, you'll like Faubs. If you don't, well good luck, it can be a bit frustrating sometimes when both the student and professor is lost.
Professor Faubion helped me to actually like math and took so much time and patience when explaining the material that I finally understood it for once in my life. No matter what style of learner you are he caters to your specific needs and is more concerned with your understanding above all else which was the best part. I highly recommend!
Super helpful in office hours, fair exams that test knowledge taught in class.
He's a very good math teacher. He messes up alot but that's because he goes through the problems very quickly. He's also very helpful and not too tough.
Very good at explaining hard concepts and always helps you when you need. Expect the homework to take some time.
I cannot emphasize enough how important office hours are. He is so helpful in office hours because he loves math so much. Will take as long as you need to explain the concept and is very reachable on email. Wants your questions and ideas. Great prof. Go to office hours - you won't regret it.
He gives a lot of homework but he takes homework questions during the class before it is due.
He truly wants everyone to learn the material and cares about students doing well in his class. He dedicates an hour after each lecture to office hours and is extremely enthusiastic about teaching concepts 1 on 1. His classes might not be an easy A but if you put in the effort he will help you do well and actually learn the material.
good luck
I took college level calc II in high school, and by taking this class it's like I'm UNlearning junk I at least had an idea of before. He makes tons of mistakes during lectures, so it's really hard to follow and leads to a lot of wasted, confused notes that are useless for study. Best bet is to do use online resources and do a LOT of practice probs.
Zach's a great guys. Makes mistakes in lectures, but is very enthusiastic about the material. Very personable and easy to talk to outside of class. Also very attractive
Faubion is a chill teacher that explains concepts very clearly. We moved at a decently fast pace and found ourselves ahead of the syllabus quite often, allowing for him to explain some cool concepts that aren't in the curriculum. Despite moving faster than other sections, I felt he taught the material very well
Professor Faubion is truly passionate about math, and it shows in his lectures. He seems genuinely excited to be teaching each and every class. He is super accessible outside of class and always willing to work through any questions you have, for as long as it takes at office hours. All in all a super sweet and passionate prof.
One of the best teachers I've ever had! He makes math an incredibly accessible for visual learners. He's always super down to discuss any questions you might have about the material or beyond. He can seem a little intense at first, but is actually super nice and approachable.
Professor Faubion is an amazing professor - especially if you love physics. Taking calc two with him it was clear he molds students into thinkers and higher level math students. Unfortunately, this means that the pacing in his classes is rather extreme. But it is absolutely manageable. Recitations are nearly useless.
One of the worst teachers at the university. He is condescending and rude makes annoying tests and doesn't know how to teach.
Good guy, not hard, do the work and learn the material he teaches and you're good.
Prof Faubion obviously cares that we not only learn the material but we learn about the intuitions and motivations behind it. Its clear that he spends a lot of time thinking of ways to teach us the material in this intuitive way. I found this pretty helpful and I got a lot out of the lectures each day.
Difficult material, but Prof. Faubion is a good teacher. Funny and helpful in lectures.
Very straightforward lectures. Fairly easy homework. Tough exams. Recitation practice problems will take you quite some time if you arent focused in class. DONT SKIP OR YOUR LIFE WILL BE MISERABLE.
Spent almost all of the lectures doing useless proofs just to tell us the concept we actually need to know by the end of class, something that I did not find beneficial. However, you can tell that he's passionate about math and wants you to understand what's behind the formulas you learn (hence the proofs). Flexible with deadlines but hard tests.
Math 42 is a hard class. You have to put in the hours to study vectors, multiple integrals and surface integrals. But Professor Faubion makes that learning journey much easier. He is intelligent, funny, and all around an exemplary teacher. My biggest tip would be to GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. People complain on this site but I suspect they are salty.
The class was very hard and he focuses more on theorems and proofs. He is a funny guy who likes to teach but it is not easy to talk to him outside of his class since his classes are crowded.
He gives a lot of homework, so you'll be learning mostly through that. His explanations can be very confusing.
Professor Faubion was my first class at Tufts, I took him over the summer with BLAST for introductory Statistics. I am awful at Math but if you show that you care he will make sure you pass. Go to office hours and do not fall behind in work and you will succeed.
Prof. Faubion gives detailed notes and explanations in his content videos. His recitation sections encourage you to realize and understand the theory behind why a certain calculus concept (i.e. polar integration, linear approximations) works. Grading weights are fair (tests worksheets), and he's available in office hours twice a week!
Best recitation instructor for understanding the theory behind concepts that were lectured about. Really easy to approach when you have questions or if you're stuck on something in the homework or activity sheets.
Really unorganized professor. Very unapproachable.
Zach struggles to teach lectures- definitely more confusing than helpful. Khan academy is the only thing getting me through this class. Two exams and 6 quizzes basically determine your grade. Tufts missed with this class
He really tries to teach the material, but his lectures are confusing and he frequently gets turned around or messes up definitions. He is well meaning and very kind, but even after going to office hours every week I still didn't understand the material...
Lectures are unorganized and I struggle to learn. Test material didn't correlate to what was given on worksheets and tests. Took this class optionally and it was a terrible decision. I think he is not a great teacher, he loves math and tries so hard but wow are his lectures confusing and not super helpful. The book is your best friend. Buckle up.
Last fall, Calc 2 was taught by three professors including Faubion. He was by far one of the better of the options. He would answer questions and walk us through concepts a lot better in recitation. The course layout was annoying where the MyLab was due the day we learned the material (and posted a week prior) so we had to teach ourselves.
A lot of people think he moves too fast in his lectures, but it's really not too bad. He tends to mess up and explain concepts incorrectly and doesn't realize until a while later, which can be confusing. There's definitely a lot of work in this class, but it's consistent (due on certain days each week), so it's easy to make a routine around it.
Not a bad lecturer, only problem is that he doesn't always explain concepts used on homeworks thoroughly in lecture. Class drags on and is boring sometimes but thats just the nature of Calc II.
Math of Social Choice is boring, but not hard. A key difference, I have no solid standing in math concepts so this class was perfect. Pretty sure Zac is a high level calc prof, so sometimes I felt like this info was too simple for his brain lol. Above all else, he's flexible. If youre sick, need extra time, etc, he's a nice guy.
Prof Faubion struggled to teach Calc 2 well this semester. Lots of homework, annoying quizzes, and his lectures taught nothing but mistakes. Avoid him. However, the grading was curved which was nice
Faubion did a good job of explaining things when I asked him individual questions, however, he definitely struggled through the lectures. Frequent mistakes and a lack of context for visualizations meant it was hard to get anything out of the lecture. If you're taking Calc II, choose your recitation teacher carefully, that choice is a make or break.
He definitely tries but his explanations can often be more confusing than the content itself. He's nice though and will try his best to help you out. For me personally, the flipped classroom format made things harder. Beware: he makes a good amount of mistakes that can confuse you.
im so lost in this class and the video lectures only makes things worse. He's nice but could explain things better. A+ for effort though
Self taught course, hard exams. If you're not a math person, save yourself the time. Faub was an average prof though, you need to put in the effort.
Zac is a smart guy. Hes just one of those smart guys who kind of assumes youre on the same level as him. Hes pretty patient, though, and will get to the explanation you need if you keep on him about it. Hes definitely his best self one-on-one (go to office hours!!!). Dont be afraid to ask questions. The tests are pretty tough, so study well.
Professor Zac is extremely caring and wants you to do well on the exams. He answers all of your questions, no matter how stupid they are. If you're taking Statistics with him, he requires you to use Studio, but you can get used to it quickly. I took him in the summer and I just love him. He's the best. He's charming, tall, and wants the best for u
Having Professor Zachary Faubion was such an honor. He was diligent in his teachings and extremely fair when it came to grading assignments. I took his class during the summer, and he was extraordinary. 10/10 would recommend. He's charming, tall, and hilarious.
Took calc II in high school but decided to retake because I felt like I didn't learn, and he has been super helpful explaining concepts. Seems super passionate about math and it helps! He makes mistakes, but honestly that makes me feel better and it's not bothersome. Happy to help students! Very quotable.
Great guy, super helpful & available. Makes lots of mistakes during lectures but it's OK. This is more about the class than him, but some recitations have INCREDIBLY easy quizzes and some very difficult. Zac's quizzes are on the harder side, but what's to say is that the class overall isn't very fair. Exams are difficult. Will miss his lectures tho
It is a steep adjustment to the class in the first few weeks; Zac likes to teach Calculus II by starting with series/sequences, and then working backwards to easier material like integrals. He knows how to teach concepts effectively, but makes frequent typos and mistakes during lectures.
Zac is very funny. I was at least entertained in the lecture's even when I was completely clueless about what we were learning, which was most of the time. It can take time to understand the topics, but Zac and TA's are very willing to give extra help. I used the textbook maybe twice in the entire semester.
Lectures are a bit confusing and convoluted at times. I have friends at other universities that I frequently had to reference for explanations. If you took BC, you're golden. If not, it'll be quite a bit more difficult to follow along.
Inspiring Lectures!
Very good professor conceptually. Little disorganized during lectures, but is able to teach pretty well. Calc 2 is definitely going to be hard if you don't commit the time to learning the material as you go / haven't taken BC before. That being said, lot of guidance from Zac and TAs in this class, no reason you shouldn't get an A if you put in time
Very good organized lectures. Easy to understand. Good professor overall.
I love Zac! He's hilarious and cares so much about his students, despite teaching such a large class. I felt like I understood all the concepts on a much deeper level than I did in BC. His grading style is also more than fair, and he was very communicative and flexible with us when there was a bomb scare. HIGHLY recommend this class!
Zac was really a great lecturer, managed to make the bland content of Calc 2 much more interesting and explained topics very thoroughly. Challenging course but if you have a good TA and use office hours to make sure you understand homeworks, you can be successful even without having taken calc BC.
Professor Faubion's lectures were very effective in teaching me the material. He often went over more theoretical justifications for the subject matter, but we were only tested on pretty basic applications. If you do the homework the rest of the course is pretty easy. AB calc was more than enough preparation for this course.
Zac was funny in lectures, made it very clear what he expected from us, was organized and tried to be funny. If you're not a math person, Calc 2 won't be a very interesting or fun class, but I think Zac served those with a general interest in the field very well.
His class was hard and geared towards people who have already taken calc 2. The weekly worksheet is made to be so difficult and long that you have to go to office hours to solve them. His a nice guy and is open to questions and compromise. The class can be overwhelming and takes a huge time commitment to do well.
Zac is a really good math professor. I took Calc I last semester and was dreading Calc II, but it was actually so much more engaging and interesting. He goes a little fast-paced, but just fast enough for students to keep being engaged in class. Overall he explains concepts really really well and is willing to repeat explanations.
Professor Faubion is a good math teacher, but the speed of lectures can be way too fast which is in part due to the nature of the course. The grading scheme is very nice. My only complaint would be that some of the worksheet problems are so unbelievably hard that you're not actually practicing what you've learnt, but going to a TA for an answer.
Faubion is not a good lecturer; he makes simple problems way more confusing than they need to be, wastes time on excessive examples in class, and makes lots of mistakes on the board. Tests are challenging, but with worksheets, mylabs, and practicum quizzes it's not too hard to get a decent grade.
Zac's lectures can be challenging, but he does do his best to thoroughly explain the concepts. Worksheets are also quite difficult, and I found myself going to office hours at least once a week. If you go to office hours and study well for the tests (which often contain at least a few tricky questions), you should do well.
Lectures are heavily focused on deriving things rather than using them. He also doesn't teach stuff the most effectively and problem sets expect you to discover new concepts that can be a big challenge. The worksheets are too hard and the mylabs are too easy. Neither match the midterm or finals in difficulty.
Very accessible outside of class, but homework and pset difficulty do not match exam difficulty at all. he expects you to teach yourself concepts as class time is devoted to deriving topics
He is a really nice guy, and he is very good at explaining the material. He set up the course really well, and he genuinely wants everyone to do well. As long as you do the work and go to office hours when you need it, you'll do well.
Professor Faubion is sometimes overly theoretical in his lecture explanations, but this is well-compensated by his incredibly accessibility outside of class, including generous office hours and quick email responses.
I do not recommend taking this class if you are a visual/lecture learner. He will make you break up into groups and do the work there. He is kind tho. Homework is heavy if you do not understand
Professor Faubion is a really difficult instructor to judge. He tries really hard to keep lectures helpful and engaging. But our midterm exam was made 24 hours before we took it, and there was a massive error that personally tanked my grade due to wasted time. On the other hand, the grading scheme allowed me to fully make up for it on the final.
When I was told Professor Faubion was a logic major, the world made sense. He is nothing short of intelligent, but the way he operates lectures transmits theory and logic. Oftentimes the simplest topics turn into twenty minutes of mumbo-jumbo and theory. However, he is always willing to lend a hand or talk about math and its pulchritude.
I agree he is very theoretical in his lectures. If that is your thing then you'll like him. However, his homework often does not align with the lectures at all and were a headache to complete. Professor Faubion is very helpful during office hours though and is a nice man.
I felt like I didn't learn anything from the lectures, but the recitations were much more helpful. The homework was difficult, and I felt as though the lectures didn't teach what was being assessed on the homework.
Took Calculus one before, but where I was confused I could always learn things through his lectures. Homework was not bad, overall good teacher
Amazing professor. He was very clear in every lecture and was happy to explain any steps when students had problems or asked a question. The pace was great and the midterm and final were the expected difficulty.
Professor Faubion explained the basic concepts of calculus very well. I liked how he showed the textbook definitions of concepts along with example problems which helped me understand a difficult topic. He also was very nice and easy to contact outside of class.
Faubion is a great guy. His lectures are pretty clear, but in the moment they feel pretty overwhelming. He clearly knows his stuff and his process of breaking down why certain formulas are what they are is very helpful. He just makes A LOT of minor mistakes on the board which always keeps you on edge during lecture.
Great prof, funny explanations and goes off on tangents occasionally, but a good lecturer. Would take again
Faubion has no issue going back a few weeks to review topics to help facilitate understanding.
Zach is extremely smart, maybe too smart. The proofs can get very overwhelming and he makes a ton of mistakes. However, he is extremely willing to talk to you about what you are confused about.
Prof. Faubion's exams are remarkably nice: only two easy exams (median of class often around 90); if you bomb the midterm and ace the final, only the final counts; and you can bring cheat sheets. Beware: he makes lots of small mistakes during lecture, which may confuse you. Other than that, he is very caring, accessible, flexible, and smart.
I liked the structure of the class and I really did learn a lot. The only negative thing I would say is that the morning lectures were a little rough because Faubion may not be a morning person and made some minor errors. Outside of that it was an amazing class and he was really helpful and accessible outside of class.
Decent amount of work outside of class but grading structured to help you. Very fair and Zach is a G. All can get an A by putting in effort.
Lectures are dull sometimes as he makes a lot of arithmetic mistakes, and goes through a bit too many examples. HWs were pretty difficult with proofs, but exams weren't bad at all. The 2 exams are only worth 45% in total, so its not difficult to do well in his class. Overall, Zach was a pretty good professor to take linear with
Really fair prof. Can be hard to follow during lecture and made a lot of mistakes on the board which was frustrating, but still worth attending. He's helpful at office hours and is happy to go over old material if you're confused. Very fair exams, got cheat sheets for both midterm and final. Homework isn't overwhelming
Faubion really gets a bad rep from students because of the amount of mistakes he makes on the board during lecture. In reality, he's actually one of the better lecturers in the math department and his lectures are very clear. With the amount of mistakes he makes perhaps he could be more lenient on the quizzes for tiny errors.
Extremely generous prof. Grading is built for you to do well on. Take the quizzes and homework seriously because they count for a good portion of your grade. Enjoy the conceptual conversations during lecture. Zach wants you to understand the larger picture rather than just working with algorithms and he will test on that. Would recommend.
What if instead of zachary faubion he was zachary freakyon
Professor Faubion gets a bad rep because he can be very disorganized and struggle with basic arithmetic at times which made his lectures frustrating, but if you look past that, they are great. Remarkable easy exams which he allowed a cheat sheet for, and weren't weighted a lot. If you can look past those small complains, he is a very good professor
Frequently makes mistakes on the board but is overall a good lecturer. He's always in a great mood, which makes class a lot more bearable. Great course structure, allowed 2 cheat sheets on the final, really helpful in OH. Hate to say it but I might miss him!
He explains concepts very well, but you gotta learn to ignore his small mistakes like dropping a negative or something. He's very good in office hours, and he explained the concepts very clearly and how they all relate to each other.
Zach is a great professor and explains things really well, but he makes board mistakes every lecture. I also wish he used the board instead of writing on his computer, since he scrolls away from the notes kinda fast sometimes. Exams are very fair, and he allows you to bring cheat sheets on the midterm and final.
Lectures can get a bit boring but Zach has great energy and is a great dude. Easy to do well in the class if you stay on top of work and put in effort. Weekly quiz, MyLabs, and PS, exams on the easier side and allows cheat sheet(s). You'll know what to expect from Zach and would recommend taking him.
Zach is a great professor and his TAs are good as well. It is pretty easy to get an A in his class if you just complete the homework and do well in the final. The midterm grade will be dropped if you do better in the final. He also allows to bring a cheat sheet during the exams. Overall, an easy A!
Good Professor. Grading criteria is clear and he is accessible outside of class for office hours if extra help is necessary. His exams are pretty easy for better or worse. He explains things clearly and effectively, tends to do a lot of example problems in lecture.
He messes up a lot more than you'd expect a math teacher with notes in front of him to, but that's the only knock I have. He's very approachable, accessible outside of class, uses lots of examples to illustrate his ideas, and answers questions professionally. Tests were also pretty chill compared to homeworks and recitation quizzes.
He definitely makes more mistakes in examples than you would expect, but overall a great lecturer. I found him to be much better for Calc III than Linear. The homework was sometimes overly theoretical, but overall, I would recommend.
Good lecturer! Gets a bit frazzled and sometimes does algebra incorrectly, but I learned a lot. Lots of chances to do well too.
Professor Faubion is a nice guy and cares about his students but his lectures are very hard to follow for someone who has not taken calc in high school and now has to for econ. He goes way to fast and doesn't make a whole lot of sense with what he is saying. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Most engaging math lecturer I've ever had and an amazing person. He makes the content seem very simple, and even when it's not he's always there to help. Going to him specifically for office hours is an amazing experience. Graded 70% from a midterm and final, the rest is mini-quizzes and homework. With strong preparation a good grade is likely.
Great class! Very much what you would expect of Calc I
Terrible teacher. Teaches backwards and doesn't explain what you are learn or how to solve a problem until he has already confused you. Written Hws are 10x harder than they should be to "prepare" you. But, he writes some problems incorrectly and won't mention it till the day it's due. So you can be confused on a problem bc it's written wrong. FUN!
Overall pretty good professor. I like the grading system of the class, bc some low grades can be dropped. He may make mistakes in class, or on written homework and you have to redo the problem. Other than those little inconveniences, pretty good professor and I would recommend taking him for calc 1. Homework is a bit much and can be confusing
Professor Faubion is a great professor. The class is organized pretty well. His lectures can go too in-depth sometimes, so be aware and just take the notes you need. Written HWs and Online My-Lab can seem like a lot of homework, but honestly, so long as you do the homeworks with good effort, you will be prepared for the exams.
He is a good professor. His classes sometimes have too many mathematical concepts that may help some to better understand but may leave the majority more confused than they were. Hated the written homeworks' grading criteria-very hard to score well in the homeworks. His exams are fair. He curves every paper. Easy to get an A.
The class is pretty exam heavy but questions are similar to what you'd find on the MyLabs/recitation activities, and if you took IB math/AP calc you'll be fine. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory and recitation is, but imho the recitation was way more helpful than the actual lectures.
Faubion was so kind and funny. I honestly hate calc but the class was pretty easy to get an A in, saying that from someone who was terrified to take it. He had mixed reviews going into the year so I was nervous but he was great! He would occasionally make mistakes on the board but would always correct them when pointed out and explain them.
Amazing Professor in every aspect
I had him for online Linear Algebra over the summer and he is the goat. The class was very time consuming, as there were lots of video lectures to watch and not much time to do it. Class was group work. He was incredibly kind and helpful and willing to stay after class to explain what you don't know. All the tests were also open note open textbook.
Explains math concepts pretty simply. In comparison to other math professors, his tests are not as difficult, however, as with any math professor, grading is tough and nit-picky.
He's a good guy but I found his lectures to be pretty uninformative. He spends most of class time giving the justification behind what we are doing instead of teaching us what we are actually expected to know. Most of what I learned was from yt vids, hw, and practicum. As long as you do your practice problems and hw, you should be fine.
Lectures can be hard to follow with unnecessary proofs; he sometimes makes mistakes and isn't the best lecturer. Class was not bad at all & TAs were very nice. The graders will often wrongly grade your work but it can be easily fixed. Exam-heavy class but lowest pset & assignment are dropped. Midterm can also be dropped in place of the final.
terrible lecturer and makes mistakes but is caring and will help if you approach him. TA's are okay and can sometimes makes mistakes when grading, but not huge issue. all lowest grades of each category can be dropped. but assignments/exam questions are WAY more difficult than examples done recitation and lecture. needs a lot of practice.
He teaches everything conceptually and hw & tests are completely different from what he teaches. He is not a good professor and lectures are draining. Quizzes depend on your TA's (range from hard to easy) and Faubion acts as if he wants you to succeed, but really doesn't.
Zac teaches in a very confusing way even for someone who has already taken Calc 1. If you are new to calc, I do not recommend because you will be confused. He insists on proving why formulas work rather than giving multiple example problems (like what you see on quizzes and exams). He is not a very good professor for an intro course.
He explains concepts in a very confusing way and is one of the fastest speakers. Exams are framed weirdly, unlike the questions that you will get on homework. Makes careless simple errors in computations and teaching. A nice person who wants to help you, but actually didn't. Overall, lessons are confusing than helping and exams are not that fair.
Professor Faubion is kind and approachable - he answers emails in a timely manner, and he writes on board which makes the notes clear. However, there's a mistake on the final exam which he didn't find out until the exam day and he can make minor mistakes in lectures. I would recommend taking his class once and see if you can follow him.
He is a kind person and is willing to help you outside of class. However, during his actual lectures, he often made careless mistakes mid-lecture and would end up making himself confused which was frustrating when taking notes.
I took calc with no experience, and it was really hard- he literally said it was ok if you didnt know how to do it ON THE FINAL- like he did not want us to do well on that, he does respond to email tho
He makes a lot of errors and simple mistakes, which can be kind of confusing, but we all do that. I felt properly challenged and well prepared for the exam. I think that he is a good professor.
Faubion is very kind and responds to emails quickly! His lectures are odd because he is good at explaining concepts but spends the 2nd half of the lectures going over concepts beyond the scope of the course/explaining "why" things work which students don 't need. 60% of your grade is from the midterm (pretty fair) and the final which was very hard.
Zachary Faubion gets very involved in the little conceptual pieces of math. The pieces that oftentimes do not need to be elaborated on to increase understanding. While derivations of some formulas are nice, they take away from class time; in turn, this caused the class to learn integrals in the final two weeks of class.
