Dr. Judson taught at UC Berkeley. As it says, he somehow treat the students as if we are Berkeley students. Not easy on grading. Homework will be collected and graded. Quiz every week or midterm. Examples are from textbook. He is an OK professor.
He's great! Really nice, knows what he's talking about. Good teacher, encourages questions. His class is challenging & can move quickly, but he's good about giving help if you ask. All our HW was online. He's not real hard on attendance, but if you dont go to class you wont know whats going on. Definitely take him, if you have the chance :)
Great professor for my first quarter here!... easy quiz and midterm. As long as you do the HW, you'll be fine!
Took him for differential equations and i liked him alot. He is very generous in grading. If you go to his office hours, he will give you tons of examples and explain you step by step.
i hate math and he made it seem easy. he uses my mathlab which really helped me in the end. i just wish he taught more classes ill be needing. do the homework and youll be fine.
His first time teaching the course, seem to have made him extremely arrogant. I guess everyone else but him should know how to use a TI-85
Zachery is a very good teacher. He teaches the subject carefully and clearly. I liked his class a lot. He is also very fair in grading.
His class definately helped me prepare for next level math classes. He gives you alot of examples and i also found him helpful during his office hours.
Ienjoyed his class. His lectures are very good. His grading is also fair. If you do the homework you will be fine. Recommended!
If yoou do the homework he assigns. you will be good. His exam questions were related to his homework problems. So, do the homework.
He does a great job at teaching the subject.
Knows a lot about math. I think he previously taught at UC berkeley. Class was not mandatory, many students skipped class.
hands down best math teacher ive ever had in my life with he would teach STATS!
best teacher ever!! super nice and explains everything really well!! This is the first time I've ever gotten a B in math and an A on a math test!!
he is the best professor ever. if u come to class everyday u will get an A+
I regret taking math 114 with this professor. He hardly teaches, he goes through a problem for about 10 mins on the board, hands you a sheet of paper to do group work for the remainder of the class period. His tests are difficult, the sections arent tabled with how much its worth, so you cant check if its graded right or wrong Worst math class ever
Class is fairly okay, he makes you do groupwork but you can just show up and pretend like you're working and he'll give credit. One homework assignment due every week along with a quiz. If you need help, he's also willing to help until you understand the material. I aced majority of his quizzes but failed all 3 midterms + final and still got a B!
2 quizzes each week. HW almost everyday. GO TO CLASS AND STAY. participation is worth a lot.I failed a midterm and my grade went up because of %100 for participation. Quizzes are easy. Midterms not so much. Lectures for a bit, then you do group work. Drops 3 lowest quizzes. Opens up HW so you can do it at the end. MyMathLab Required.I passed barely
Dr. Judson was great at explaining material. There was group work almost every day of the quarter. Homework was done online, which actually I learned a lot from. Quizzes every Wednesday and Friday...they were pretty easy. He wasn't the easiest grader... you really have to know the material to get a good grade. I struggled and ended up with a B+.
The best Professor ever. You will learn a lot of things from him not just Math.Come to his office hours, try hard and your effort will pay off.
Dr. Judson is a great professor! He explains the material extremely well. He went over the basics and then handed out a sheet for everyone to write on the whiteboard. GENIUS idea, our groups worked out the problems while he walked around and helped every group learn and understand. Fantastic!
Horrible professor. Extremely bad teaching style. Grades in the weirdest and most unreasonable way you could imagine. An A in any other Math 1C professor will get you a D or a C in his class.
Great professor, DO THE HOMEWORK, ask questions, if you don't get the material go to the tutoring center. Midterms are based off the practice one's he gives you. Pretty straight forward.
Want a GPA drop from 4.0 to 3.8? Take him!
His lectures were decent. There's weekly quizzes and hw. He gives 6 group labs that take FOREVER to do and are only 5% of your grade. He gives sample midterms and discussions but does not give solutions to said things. Also, his midterms are more difficult than the samples given! Overall, even with 85% being an A his class was very difficult. :(
He is good but, there isn't enough time for quizzes.you have to study hard.
Excellent teacher! Very clear and helpful. Lots of group work!
Good teacher. Attentive to students and tries to answer questions in multiple ways if not understood the first time. Takes the time to see that you get the right answer, but has you figure out the answer.
Love his class! He is nice and explains the materials pretty well :) Do hw and study, and you will be ok! TAKE HIM GUYS!!
He's the best yet the hardest Math teacher I've ever had in life. He's clear, inspiring and super super supportive and helpful, but at the same time, he gives hard quizzes and tests, and super meticulous in the way he grades. Attendance is not mandatory, calculator is not allowed. Take this class if you really want to learn Math, but be aware!
I love his class! Quiz every class but is easy :) Do your hw, do well on quizzes = A !
Loved taking math 41 with Professor Judson. He's so clear and teaches the material well, and it's easy to approach him if you have any questions. He's so friendly! I really wished I had him again for math 42, maybe I'll try my luck for 43. His tests might be hard, but I considered them easy because he helped me grasp the concepts.
He is super nice and somewhat funny! He is very approachable and will answer any questions. No textbooks; only online homework. There is a quiz on every section but they're very short; you only have about 8 minutes to finish them.
Homework is all online. Quizzes every wens & friday. He's super chill dude, and helps explain to you how to work out a problem in the simplest way possible for you to understand. Wanted to take him again in the summer but he filled up fast!
Fantastic math teacher! He simplifies difficult concepts, and shows you how AND why you're doing what you're doing through a step by step process. Group work gives you in class practice to ask questions and understand the lesson. He sends sample midterms, so there's no reason why you shouldn't be prepared for exams. Approachable and patient.
He is fantastic! Strongly recommend for Math 114 !
Judson is a great teacher! I love his teaching style, and he is so nice if I don't understand something. I would defenitely recommend this class if you want to have less book work and more easy, not so strict teaching of the material.
He's a great teacher ! highly recommend taking him ! he makes things very easy to understand. group work done on the board and counts towards your participation grade . awesome teacher !!
I have taken 3 math courses with Dr. J and enjoyed every single one of them. I hated math before taking 212 with him and now he has showed me how enjoyable math can really be. If you just need to take algebra & pre-calc than he is the man to do it with; you will learn so much in this class! For classes beyond that (calculus) he will DESTROY you.
He is such a great professor! I definitely would take him again if I could. He is funny and quirky, which makes math a lot more bearable. Group work is every day. At first that didn't sound like a good thing, but I loved it! Working with others is a great way to learn from your mistakes. If you put enough effort and show up to class, you will pass!
He is an amazing teacher mostly group work, but the group work make the class go by faster. He makes math interesting with his funny attitude.
Only gave four tests in 1B. This made it somewhat hard to get my grade up in the class since the tests counted more than almost anything else in the class.
class was so fun&easy first 15 mins he gives examples then rest of the class u do group work which is similar to the hwk all the hwk is online&super easy unlimited trys to get 100% he gives out sample midterms exactly similar to the midterm take judson u won't regret it! super easy funny&nice teacher BEST TEACH EVER TOOK AT DEANZA he gives ec too!!
He is a great math teacher I received a D in my first semester with him because I was cocky XD. Next semester i got all serious and received a B- on his class. Great teacher he will give you extra credit if you participate in group work.
Dr. Zack Judson's class is amazing. He explains abstract definitions every clear and gives many good examples to help you understand. His exams are pretty hard, but can still receive a good and fair grade as long as you are able to finish the homework and labs questions.
He's very helpful.
Best teacher I've ever had in my life. Gives "recipies" for solving problems which makes it so much more clear and easier to understand. Class work is in groups, working out problems together makes it easier to understand too. Math has always been hard for me, but Prof. Judson breaks it down to it's simplest form.
Good lectures, useful homework and example Midterm. If you are not good at math, try your best to except a B. If you are good at math and go to office hour every day, finish ur sample midterm in 30 min, then you have a chance to get a A ! (I did)
Typical math class: lecture, go home, do homework, get tested. Very monotonous. He does, however, promote teamwork by integrating group labs into the course. Allows you to break the ice pretty easily with your classmates and gain valuable allies in your math journey(something he urges everyone to do). Tests are slightly above average difficulty.
He is a decent teacher. Never bothers with emails or is not available during his office hours. He is not one to care for his students. If you show up when you have group work and do decent on the test you will pass, otherwise let the book teach you. He is cocky and did I mention NO CALCULATORS? yeah it gets tough.
This teacher is cool. He gives you a better understanding in math! Would recommend him if you can't understand math and for his humor.
Took his summer 114 class. Half the day was lecture, half the day was groupwork at the whiteboards. Awesome way to set up lecture, I learned so much this way. Prof Judson is there for you and is super nice and approachable. Very funny, overall a great math teacher. If you care, he cares; & visa versa. Do the work and you'll pass.
I LOVED this class. Professor Judson is the best math teacher I have ever had. I really struggle with math, hence why I'm in college and just now passing pre-algebra, but he makes it so easy and clear. For the first time I understand math! But fractions are still evil. Would DEFINITELY take again. Do the HW and come to class and you will pass!
Great professor. If you have a chance take him. Made everything very clear and was there to help you if you needed it
Judson is actually a really great math teacher. His lectures aren't long at all, but he makes them to the point for you to understand the topic. After his lectures he makes us do group work on the board (which is super easy and helpful) When you leave the classroom, you'll definitely understand the lecture that was given that day. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
He's a great professor! Utilize his office hours when doing the lab assignments. Weekly quizzes are fairly tough because he only gives you 20 minutes to do them. The grading scale helps to adjust for the difficulty of the class. Put in a lot of work and you will be rewarded greatly. Weekly homework. Test are tough only because of the time crunch.
Really good Teacher, gives good lectures, definitley would recomend And take again
He presents clear and no-nonsense lectures preceding a significant group-based activity period. He covers "the whys" in the lecture and lets you practice "the hows" by doing the group activities. He will provide clear and direct feedback. He is always running around during the activity period, helping students. He is very engaged. Would take again.
I took him spring quarter and it was his first time teaching 1A in years. This guy without a doubt will make you WORK for your grade. His grading scale is nice, but don't let that fool you because his tests will destroy you. If you have no prior knowledge or arent comfortable with trig functions and good algebra, you will have the hardest time ever
Took his 1A class in the spring, even though it was a 5 unit course I did more work than all my other classes combined. His class killed my GPA. Also NO CALCULATORS. His tests are HARD and the timing is too short. Stay away if you do not have a good background in Math
Do NOT take this professor! Stay away if possible! He is super hard and had 3 midterms and quizzes every single friday that had only 10-15 mins to do. RUINED GPA! tests us on very difficult questions and concepts. tests are very very hard, final had 24-25 questions all together.. i regret taking him
No calculators; know your long division w/ decimals! Quiz beginning of each week. Took accelerated summer session; pace of class was spot-on. Lectures very straight-forward and clear. Some lectures were too quick. Group work on board after lecture. Group Work and HW reflects the quizzes/tests; no surprises. Focus on word problems; explained well.
I took his class during summer and honestly it's tough but he is the first math professor that I've seen who teaches like your own private tutor. He spend time teaching and showing you different techniques how to solve it. He make sure that you will learn and do not forget to show work to pass his class. He's one of the best math professor.
He creates these group "labs" that makes you really think and are not at all fun. Make sure you know your prerequisites because he stresses this a lot. Hw and sample midterms are helpful. Lots of pop quizzes and regular quizzes. Also must make connections in the class for labs, discussions, and (if you aren't great at math like me) to survive.
he's a pretty chill teacher for the most part. After a lecture, he puts you in groups to do the work problems. If you finish early, you can just leave.
Every day there is group work on the whiteboards. Everybody gets up for the majority of the class and works with their group to finish a worksheet. Not graded, he just walks around the class and tells you what's right and wrong. It worked for me, but I had a good group. If you get paired with a bad group, find another one, or you'll have trouble.
Easy to understand no accent, loud, clarifies well, writes big and legibly tests are 6 frqs which are graded on a curve 10 percent increase rely on lab 5 and discussions for final
The best instructors I've ever had. You will learn a lot from his class. He gives lots of HW but the exams are similar to the homework that he gives.
Be prepared for a lot of work, including group work and independent study every single week. I wouldn't recommend taking him if you're already having two or more heavy/difficult classes. Nonetheless he is a very decent math teacher, I've never learned so much math materials in this short amount of time.
Calc is a difficult subject to teach and I think Judson did a great job. His notes are super helpful when doing the homework. Gives a lot of group work that is only 5% of your grade but you spend HOURS working on it. COMPLETE ALL DISCUSSION AND HOMEWORK PROBLEMS IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE. Be aware of time when taking tests. Good luck.
stay away with this professor if you want to take math1c, otherwise you will have 12 quizs,12 hws,6 labs, and 3 mid terms as well as a final. No kiding. It's time consuming
This guy is a math god. After a day of lecture, we would have a day of discussion where the entire class works on problems on the white board in small groups. We also have community quizzes, and a fair amount of homework. In addition, he would give us a labs(6 in total). Finally, we have 3 midterms and a final. TAKE HIM!
He did not even teach all of the physicsThey were physics based He stated that he did not like that half of the course and it shows Otherwise he's generally good at explaining concepts Just because a type of question is not asked on the exam doesn't mean it won't be asked on the final
no extra credits for his class. his lecture is pretty clear and organized, and his quizzes, midterm, and final are based on the lecture he will say how he will grade your work in class, pay attention to them and you will be fine love him so much. He remember everyone's face and name in one week, so don't skip class, he will know
He's really loud, a little condescending, and definitely intimidating. Really good and knowledgeable professor. Doesn't have bad handwriting or anything. But he's really strict and picky.
Took him for MATH212 during the summer session. Knowledgeable in his field. He can get picky when it comes to some things, but for good reasons. He really wants people to be prepared for Math 114. Study, take notes, and try during group work and you should excelle in this class.
Smart professor. However, he is condescending which gets in the way of learning. College level students are adults and should be treated as such. When other students asked for recommendations on how to stay ahead, he could not provide additional advice. I give him an A for knowledge and teaching, but a C- for interpersonal/teaching skills.
Judson was an O.K. professor. He was definitely knowledgeable in his field and was very enthusiastic about math. When you get a problem wrong he tends to make you feel a little dumb about it. He also won't help you on test days and avoid your questions. The class was easy because he laid is content out clearly and gives E.C. if you print group work
Professor Judson is a consummate professional, perfectly amicable, and a considerate teacher. I enjoyed my 212 class over the summer. Math is not my favorite subject but the class was easy to digest. $140 online math subscription required.
Do not take any class with him. He gives a lot of homework plus lab, discussion. if you have other classes or you do not have any background of all topics in his class, you cannot catch up. He is very tough for scores. Pre and calculate not recommended with him. it affects your Gpa badly.
12 HW, 12 Disucssions, 6 labs and 6 community quizzes, 3 exams, 1 final. Most work I've had in a math class. Lectures are 8.5/10. Teaches by examples. Grading curve was good since material is hard. 90-100 A. Very condescending. Treats you like a kid when you are in college. Not very good feedback on HW. Do more problems than assigned.
Homework every week, discussions, group quizzes, "labs" every other week. As I've seen other people mention, I can agree that he is a little condescending at first, but once he gets to know you, hes pretty chill. Just be prepared to work, theres no easy way out really, recommend taking him unless you can get into Howard or MK. tests avg difficulty
He made math make sense! Very dedicated & takes the time to get to know you and your needs as a student. Super funny and incredibly caring. Homework daily online and group work for second half of class. Made sure none of us felt left out or in the dark about what the material meant. Dont let my grade fool you, he's great!
worse teacher here at De Anza. if you want to mess up your GPA, then highly recommended.
not that easy if u guys do not try to understand the deep meaning of the contents. but if you do that, it wontbe that hard. I love his strict teaching style for the calculus and in some part, I could feel the analytic method even though the course was a simple integral calculus.
Took him in Winter and got the first C in my life. Keyword from me for you is discipline. He's is nothing from a normal teacher with a usual class. The advantage u have is the strict quarter schedule. FOLLOW IT, PLAN IT, PREPARE FOR IT. It will decide ur grade. Concepts, h/w, quizzes and tests are medium level. He's also helpful and understanding.
Professor Judson is amazing! I thought that I was incapable of doing well in a math class until I took his class. Lectures are minimal and most of the class is spent working on problems with a group of your choosing. Don't miss class and study for several hours outside of class. The homework is way harder than the tests. An A is tough but possible!
A lot of group work.
This professor is so easy going! Very nice and caring he also teaches in a organized manner. He gives you so many chances to pass the class, for example quizzes everyday that help your grade, opens all the homework before finals and midterms! Such an understanding professor!
Math 1B with Judson is a very straight forward class. He heavily emphasizes prereqs (everything on the prerequisite quiz will be used in the class), and has lots of group work and labs. To do well on his exams, heavily review discussions, labs, and the review midterm. These tools will be instrumental in doing well in Judson's 1B.
Took professor Judson, back in the fall quarter and I loved his class! There is homework everyday, but as long as you pay attention to the lectures and participate in class you'll do fine! There are mini quizzes everyday, but again if you just pay attention you'll do fine!
Lectures are mathematical and fast-paced, and it's often quite hard for me to grasp key points in lectures. 6 group labs which are rather tedious, and he grades them even harder than he grades quizzes and tests, although he's still a fair grader. Final is not hard and is mainly based on former quizzes and exams, which might boost your score.
His lecture is organized and straightforward. He only gives 1 percent EC at the end of the quarter, but he will curve your final grade. The difficulty of the exams are average but you have to finish 9 questions in 50 mins.
He's a pretty funny guy, but knows his stuff. The class is largely based on group work for labs, so make sure you get a good/smart group! And go to his office hours; he's nicer in-person. Quizzes/Exams are not too difficult, but not easy either. Pretty much no EC at all. I wouldn't recommend taking his class if you have other work heavy classes.
Really caring professor and makes class fun with group work! Looks intimidating at first but after getting to know him hes really nice and helpful.
Study and do all your homework, you will flourish in his class. Ask questions. The group work helped alot in understanding the material after lecture and for homework. Great Math professor. Oh and study!
I like how this prof. diversifies what we do in class. There is a mini-quiz followed by a lecture, followed by a group study session. Variety of ways to learn. If you learn best through discussion (I do) go to his office hours. He is open-minded and nice in person. P.S. 1st day quiz is a real thing. Got 0% for it mistaking it for a joke.
Not a good professor. He has group projects in a math class. That is ridiculous. Tough grader as well.
Awesome professor. Homework is easy points. show up for class and ask questions. Study guides are given and are similar to the tests.
His lectures are very clear and engaging. An excellent teacher. Lots of HW, but they're manageable (beware: he takes off points for improper formatting like not skipping a line in between questions). He holds group discussions every week, which is a nice opportunity to interact with your classmates. His exams are straightforward.
Almost everything is group work except for the midterm. Quiz and homework are an easy grade booster but his lectures are very fast-paced. You have to study outside of the class and his study guides are NOTHING like the test. My only advice is to study for the midterm.
1. Lab works are really hard and crazy, and you could not get the correct answers even though you ask at the Math center, and he never corrects the labs. Recommend: work together and share the answers with your friends. 2. His lecture is very messy, so you should take pictures or record what he says in class. 3. Make sure all your HW are correct.
He was great for an earlier math class but idk what happened with 1C. Grades extremely hard, cant emphasize that enough. Class average on first midterm was a 50%. Hw is graded on correctness as opposed to completeness, hes not that accessible outside of class, we have labs that are really hard. Quizzes are ok. Half the class dropped. Just be wary.
Gives amazing lectures. But his homework is graded not only on completeness but also on correctness. His tests are extremely difficult and you will be underprepared from the resources he gives you. The majority of the class already dropped after the first midterm which the majority failed. Stay away from his class for the sake of your grade.
Took him for 1A and although I got the best grades out of my group, still couldnt get an A. You thought only science had labs? Guess again. His lecture notes are concise, structured, and detailed. Theres so much though that Im always one whiteboard wall behind. Hes a very good teacher but the work load was more hw than 1B,C, and D combined.
Very knowledgable prof. The class is hard but it's calculus so I don't expect it to be easy. Do HW, quizzes are based on HW and examples from lectures. Take good notes. Midterms are important so heavily review quizzes, HW and notes' examples for midterms. Actual midterms are harder than review midterms so be careful. Best prof if you wanna learn.
Not sure about 'in-class'. Don't take him for any online classes. Tests are very hard. Lectures are pointless. Half of the class dropped. Other half just tried to learn from Khanacademy or YouTube. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T TAKE HIM. Worst online teacher I've ever had.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS, PREVIOUS REVIEWS HAS TO HAVE BEEN PAID. It might be bc it's online but this is the worst math class I've ever had. He grades tough and his lectures are slow and useless. I just end up watching videos on youtube. Email him and you won't get anything out of it. The class avg is an F rn. I'm still in the class but want to warn yall
An avg prof, not worth it. He has a phd from ucb and expects a high level from students but he makes mistakes too. Grades harshly and not uniformly. You learn but its on your own and from tutors because he assigns difficult labs and exams are more difficult than what he teaches. Do hard problems on your own time and take someone else, same result.
Don't ever take him, believe me, you will REGRET
your midterm grades basically determine your grade and they're 5x harder than what he teaches. Expects you to pull together 3 different concepts to solve 1 problem so if you need a B to transfer I would not recommend this class unless you have an extremely good understanding of calc. Regardless I had a B in calc 1A and now will prolly have a C-
I don't know how he teaches in person but online is a nightmare. It's basically self-taught, the class average is probably a C. To give you an idea of how bad it is, I got an A+ in Math 1A but I'm struggling to even get a B right now. DON'T TAKE HIM IF THIS CLASS IS UNDER YOUR MAJOR REQUIREMENTS.
he does not care about the well being of his students. Grades extremely harshly and is super picky. I did my labs with a tutor and still received less than 70 percent. HIS TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE. IM SO GLAD THIS CLASS IS OVER BECAUSE IT CAUSED LOTS OF ANXIETY AND STRESS. STAY STAY STAY AWAY.
It's so hard.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM. Don't expect him to teach you anything. I had to teach myself most of the concepts. His grading is extremely hard. He is so picky about the little things. When you ask him a question during lectures, he gives you attitude. He is so passive aggressive for no reason. Please trust me on this STAY AWAY!
DONT TAKE HIM TRUST ME IF HE WAS THE ONLY AVAILABLE PROFESSOR WAIT FOR THE NEXT QUARTER.
He is not kind to people who are struggling. I had a gap year in Maths because of personal reasons and I tried to seek help. He doesn't have office hours but discussion boards. Takes a day or two to respond. Better of learning through youtube because he somehow bends words to make it more difficult to understand DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS SAVE UR GPA
I took this professor online for math 1B; in person for math 1A. math 1A is ok, if he's ur last choice, just be aware that there are hard group labs; quizzes are group work for the last 5 minutes of the quiz(so make sure to network and find a smart person); midterms and finals aren't easy. STAY AWAY FOR ONLINE. He is not tech savvy and is just bad.
At this time of Covid Crisis, when teachers are at least a little bit lenient, He showed 0 mercy. By the first midterm,1/3 of class had dropped, rest had 55% avg. till the end. His exams are HARD, even if you do everything correctly, he makes sure to grade extremely harsh& deduct points on some random things. Stay away if you care about ur sanity.
I could never recover from his class. He is a really tough and strict grader. Just don't take his class. He is one of the worst professors I have ever met. I'm not sure about normal classes, but online class with him was like hell. escape while u can.
I don't how he is in person, but he is definitely not the professor to take online.
Honestly one of my favorite professors I've ever had. I'm sure for harder classes he may be tough. He's a pretty funny guy, he tests hard(he even marked me once for a funny comment which he even remarked he liked actually once). He doesn't want anyone to ever fail his class, if you're having a hard time just communicate. Killing it Mr. Jud!
Holy, by far the hardest math teacher I have ever taken. Only 12 student took the class. First midterm average was 36 percent. He gave a bunch of 0s for incorrect submission other midterm averages were 50-60%. You learn from his lectures but he just assigns so much homework and so many labs, groups work etc that your other classes are demolished.
Honestly one of the most difficult math teachers at De Anza. To give him credit, if you're a math major, you're more than welcomed to take him, I feel like he prepares you for a math major, but his class is very stressful. His lectures carry on very fast which is hard to catch up, so be prepared to use Khan academy to supplement his lectures.
Take this class if you struggle and are in MPS! He is someone you want to learn from. He takes the time to show you everything step by step. While taking quiz's he will write on the side and show you were you went wrong. Not just mark you wrong and move on. He will spend extra time if needed.. But if you listen you wont need.
Go to his office hours, hes very kind and will explain everything you dont 100% understand from the ground up. The only criticism I have to offer is that our labs and group work are significantly harder than everything else, and it would be nice to have more time to work on them/ less to do. But youll understand calculus well after his class.
Hes not a bad professor and will give you good feedback, but his expectations are unrealistic. Workload is heavy. There was a week where there was a lab, group assignment, quiz and midterm that were all done in 1 week, which was absolutely insane. Youre given 40 minutes for each quiz and 50 for each midterm, unrealistic expectations once again.
Class follows a quick but not unmanageable pace. Offers a lot of help in his office hours. Be sure to religiously include every step and you should get full credit on most assignments.
Gives feedback and will expand on his feedback on office hours. Gives a lot of group work and labs. Labs are much more difficult for no reason. Especially since most of it does not appear on exams and quizzes. Exams are extremely time crunched. You will understand the material after the quarter but it will be hell trying to get through the class.
Difficult class. Do all homework for an A on the tests. Small and digestible lectures. 5x office hours a week. Very helpful. Records all lectures and uploads them for us to rewatch (game-changing). Group work is worth 10% of the grade. Class requires a lot of time. Focuses on communication skills. Class structure is designed for you to succeed.
Made me a math major.
Overall great professor. He explains material in the lecture well, which you don't want to miss. He assigns so many labs many of which feel unrelated to the class material, and is a bit of a drag on my grade too. Get to know your classmates, there is a lot of group work. Pretty strict on grading for quizzes and midterms also. A- is 85%, A is 90%
Professor taught us like Berkeley students since he failed to get hired there. Hardest exams I have taken, hardest labs I have seen. I am a math major and he almost made me change. Would not recommend this class, takes the time of 3 math classes. Shows no mercy and does not excuse valid reasons.
this guy beats his wife and kids at home
(precalc31a) was so difficult at first, but i'd say find a good group to be friends with and the class will become much easier. he has group works, about 4-5 section of homework per week not that bad. lectures are really fast and hard to follow, but reviewing lectures with friends helped me pass the class. you're able to retake all midterms.
Cons: Dock too many points on miniscule details (particularly on labs + exams), 3 midterms are too time-crunched given difficult problems (6 problems in 50 mins; consist of 50% HW + 50% out of box Qs). Pros: Scaled down grading scale(85% is A-,60% is C), final exam grade help boost portion of quiz grades, teaches very in-depth beyond most professors
6 Difficult labs only worth 10%, lowest lab dropped. On weeks where labs are due the same time as midterms, prioritize studying for the midterms! Provide around 10-15 difficult HW problems weekly, make sure to do each problem 2-3 times. Less than a handful of people got As, good teacher, but wished he had acccomodating grading style on exams.
Honestly, he's not a bad professor and cares for his students, however here's what I took away from the class. I took him in Calc 1B by the way. - Grades so harshly (partial credit seems to be nonexistent) - You need to already be decent or skilled in calculus to get by with a passing grade - Accessible in office hours but sometimes unhelpful
Excellent professor, very good and intelligent coursework.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU NEED AN EASY CLASS TO PASS/GET AN A. With that out of the way, if you are looking to learn math at a very in-depth and masterful level this is your guy. Course was rigorous, tons of groupworks. Can't use calculators midterms/finals. Detailed lectures, assessible in office hours, and open to feedback concerning class structure.
Very easy class if yu are a pretty zirl. Rayism is prevalent as he does not like certain groups such as when you turn in the homework exactly as the solutions guide you will get 2/30 points because "yor hand writing is bad etc." When you take test and get it exactly the same there will be many excuses as to why its incorrect even though right
Best Teacher. Just take him class
If you just finished high school and took AP Calc AB in your senior year, please don't take his class. Coming into his class, I thought that he would be good but he wasn't for me and half of my class was literally failing during this years spring quarter. He literally had to change our entire class because almost no one was doing well.
Professor Judson is amazing. I was able to overcome my fear of math because of him. The lecture is very clearly explained. I took an MPS class of his so there was mandatory group work every single day, if you are lucky enough to get a good group, you are set for the class. I solely depended on the group work to get my grade!
Good professor, group work matters a lot but he executes group work well. Would take him again.
Prof Judson is great to learn Calculus. He will teach in great depth and if you want to learn hard way with great learning. He is very tough grader and exam problem will be very tricky, you need to solve lot of problem to excel in his class. Tough word problem and proper answer are required to get full marks. Accessible in office hours. Respected.
For CC students, Listen, DO NOT even try it. Unless you don't give a fk about your GPA. 1. Midterms are 40%, each comes 6-8 questions that normally take you half hour to learn with ONE single Q, he gives 6-8 within ONE hour. 2. Labs are for Elite University level of problem sets, not CC students. 3. You get 90% above, then try Millennium, GL.
Exams are real tough (average like 50%). Only a couple of people left after midterm. Good lecture, but whether this course should be designed this way, it is a question. No one would possibly want to carry a C D F grade for the future transfer, given that you can learn the subject and earn a good grade with other class.
breezed through the entire calculus curriculum with some difficult professors, I nearly aced discrete mathematics; and I have never had a professor that was so sadistic in the way he taught. He almost found a sense of pride in making this class super hard and enjoyed getting mad at us. He made the class so discouraging.
Lectures are messy and all over the place, not sure why I still go to them tbh. He never answers emails or messages. Exams have nothing to do with assigned HW and half of the class failed the last midterm. Single-handedly the most grueling prof I've had in my life. And I've had Shi too.
Messy, fast paced lectures where he'll briefly and poorly covers the most important topics and concepts. Grading is harsh and arbitrary on labs, quizzes, and exams and partial credit is nonexistent. It almost seemed like he wanted us to get questions wrong and enjoyed watching students get bad grades.
I am ashamed for Californians' tax money being spent this way cause only handful people left. Avoiding if you could.
4.0 aspiring students, RUN. If you want to challenge yourself then this is the class. 2B is hard and takes hours of practice and learning outside of class. His lectures are shallow and labs are time consuming so be prepared to self-study a lot. Exams are well-written though and truly test your knowledge (Average was ~45%). Wasn't worth the stress.
Extremely homework heavy. Test were difficult. You had to do test corrections in order to retake the test but there was no credit for the test corrections.
The absolute worst experience I have ever had in a Math class.
Good Lecturer and helps you understand the material deeply by exploring through labs (concepts outside syllabus). However, he grades VERY STRICTLY on all homework, quizzes, labs, and tests. It is really demotivating when you spend 3 hours working hard on an assignment just to get 50-60% of the grade. Plan to spend 7-9 hrs/week for decent grades.
DO NOT listen to any positive or even any relatively good reviews they are all fake. By far the worst professor. He will go out of his way to look for any reason to mark you off.
Professor Judson is very caring and explains things really well. He's hard, but you will learn the material if you pay attention and ask for help when you need it. You get test retakes as long as you do test corrections (use this to know what to study!).
Really bad professor. Making things more difficult. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
This is a very difficult professor. Any other professor at De Anza for Calc 1 is easier. You can only pass this class if you have already taken it; he expects you to know a lot of stuff beforehand. He gives you 50 minutes to solve 6 pages of problems on a test. Harder than my high school AP Calc
Professor Judson has high expectations, grading quizzes and exams very strictly. The workload is heavy, requiring 7-9 hours per week. However, his lectures are informative, and unstuckstudy proved helpful for study prep alongside the textbook.
Judson in terms of lecture is pretty decent but in terms of grading is different. Exams are very difficult and class averages on them are low. The class average for exams are usually 36-40%. He also assigns unnecessary labs in class very 1-2 weeks. Other calculus professors are way more easy than him. Unless you want to suffer, don't take him.
The average for the first midterm was an F. Professor Judson did not even curve it! He does not allow retakes or notes. If you struggle with math, do not take Judson. If you are only taking Calculus 1 for the credits, do not take Judson. Judson is approachable, but gives you harder problems and more work than other professors at DeAnza
I consistently got higher than the top 25% within the class and even then I wasn't even close to an A. I would not take this professor due to the harsh midterm grading. It's not just the questions, it's how he grades. Right answer you might get 40% of the points taken away. The average midterm was 30%-40%, and the drop rate was 50%. 0 A's
He is a really tough grader but he curves the class at the end to improve your grade by a full letter. He didn't have to do it but he did it anyways, and allows you to makeup your quizzes via the final If you want to learn and get curved at the end then take him, you won't regret it.
if u wanna learn something, love math as well; take his class.
If you are a community college student who must work outside of school like me, don't waste your time and energy with this professor. If you haven't even applied to transfer, he will also hurt your grade. Do you have work on Thursdays, Fridays, and the Weekends? He will post more assignments for a week on a Wednesday or Thursday of that week.
Would not recommend
He's a caring teacher, but his grading and coursework work is extremely tough. We also had group labs every week, which was hard getting everyone to work together for the lab (since it required a lot of out-of-class time).
The difficulty of this class is due to the number of assignments you have to do each week, not because the course itself is difficult. All those useless assignments! While the students from other classes are learning how to apply those concepts to problems, you will be learning only about proofs in every lecture.
Zack Judson was an ok teacher but his labs are his only pitfall, every single week we had to do a group "lab" and half the time we never even applied the concepts on what we were learning, he said it was "preparing you for your future" it was pointless, but his quizzes are ok if you do the review that he gives then you should be good to go
Group works? Discussion board? Rough draft (10 pts)? Final draft (100 pts)? Self-reflection? I feel like I'm taking an English writing class.
avoid this professor at all cost.
Have you heard abt the reputation of De Anza physics department. I am sure you do, this class is 100x worse that that. Prof does not know how to teach, no wonder nobody liked him at hte high school he taught. I have never seen such a professor making an easy class hard. Unnecessary problems that does not relate. Hours upon hours of assignments.
LMAO he shouldn't even be a professor in the first place.
There's no online math 2B in Fall, so I took this in winter. I assumed that even a bad online class would be easier than any in-person class, but I was completely wrong. I found that this class had at least twice as much coursework as any other math 2B. This is absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. (I had Prof. Bourgoub & Dr. Shi before)
Very stressful class
He makes you do group lab projects, lectures, which didn't really help with the quizzes or the exams, and discussions. This class is very time consuming, which is bad considering how he doesn't even post his assignments and lectures on time. He takes a lot of points for seemingly no reason. Probably the worst math teacher I have taken at De Anza.
Every week, you have at least 3 Lecture Check quizzes, a set of terrible Discussion problems, most of the time, which never help you with upcoming quizzes and exams, Lab Discussion (seriously), Lab Draft, a quiz, and quiz reflection (are you serious?). Ridiculously, He will post those contents on Wednesdays, sometimes Thursdays! Grades terribly.
I GOT MY FIRST C. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIM. SAVE YOUR GPA!!!
He doesn't even know how to teach. Not a good option.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
Teaches the class like you already learned the subject before, class is pretty much proof-based, does 0 example problems so you don't know what he wants for grading, BS lab grading that almost guarantees low scores, 10 hours/week of required work not including homework (AS AN ASYNC CLASS). Not good for your GPA or learning, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
NEVER CONSIDER TAKING HIM. Every week there's discussion, a lab, a quiz, another short discussion, quiz reflection, 2-4 lecture check quizzes that have 5 questions each and you need to watch the videos very carefully to be able to answer them and the questions are hard to understand sometimes. it's like 6 unit class
BOYCOTT THIS PROFESSOR. The only reason he's still teaching because De Anza lacks professors. Even straight A student will fail this professor. Universities won't listen to you if you try to explain your bad grades. It's better to wait another quarter for a better professor than take him. Never leave Linear Algebra till last quarter!
Too many assignments each week, and he will take off marks in every possible way. The lab is in group and everyone submits their own lab but the group get's graded on everyone's work. Most of the time you get really bad grade in the lab just because someone in the group didn't do well. So even if you work very hard, you will sill get less.
He will mess up your gpa. The only thing you will get out of this class is stress not grades.
He shouldn't be a professor. Can't teach and expects students to be able to complete his huge amount of daily assignments. Quizzes and midterms on the same week. He grades low in discussions just because he thinks you haven't discussed enough. He thinks we are jobless and have nothing to do other than his class.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! He has a very unhelpful attitude. Our gpa matter for us to get into Universities and he doesn't care. Will take off grades for no reason. Your grades depend on your lab group members who you have no control over. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER TAKE HIM. You rather will wait for another quarter.
If you want to be traumatized, welcome to Judson's class
Just don't take him. Take Hassan instead if you have no other option left. At least you won't be stuck doing assignments all day.
Judson is something I won't wish upon my worst enemy.
He will make you cry to sleep (except you can't sleep as you need to finish his crazy amount of assignments)
Horrible just horrible
Found a professor who just wants to fail his students. Yes even straight A students will have their GPA ruined.
Idk why De Anza still have him. I never had a professor who has literally no sympathy.
He likes to watch his student's suffer
Something is totally wrong with this guy.
Worse than Hassan Mohamed Bourgoub
His finals is oral. He made 20min time slots to ask us questions on the topics. Maths in not a subject you can take oral in specially since the professor do not teach well.
Math oral test? He made us sign up slots for the final which is taken oral. He doesn't even teach well enough for us to understand enough to be able to give oral final. He's a professor who should not take online class, he's insecure that we use google. So oral final? Like why do you take online classes when you can't handle it?
The college should review his teaching style and evaluations. Not all students are math majors, but he doesn't adapt. His class-recorded videos are unclear. Projects and discussion boards feel unnecessary. Students take the course unwillingly due to lack of options. He needs to acknowledge feedback and improve his approach. Not caring at all.
It is impossible to pass his class. A dictator and recently started oral final exam in math class. Don't take Math 2B in DeAnza try some where else. His only intention is to fail the students.
No one voluntarily takes his class. This quarter he had an in person class and no registered for it. A new class opened up for an online class with no professor name given. We paid for the class and just a few days before the beginning we found out they assigned Judson. It was too late to move to other profs as their waitlist filled out too.
Wrote his own good feedback and now has better reviews than Hassan and Shi. Trust me I took all three and this was the worse. At least the rest two don't over work you for minimal grades. You can never get an A in this class.
He finds every possible way to make students suffer. It's like he's always finding new ways to torture his students. This time he made his finals oral which is 20% of the grades. De Anza should do something.
No one got a full grade in his midterms, there's nothing wrong with the students, it's him. If he can't set test questions in his teaching level then why is he even a professor?
Every professors come with the motive to help their students learn and pass the class. This guy wants us to fail.
He needs to understand that not all his students are majoring in math and we take more than one class each quarter. His lectures are not understandable and then he takes oral final with is so hard for students that have exam anxiety. He's not friendly or understanding at all.
His grading makes no sense. Made me hate math and requestion my major.
Not worth losing your GPA. You won't learn a thing
look. I didnt think linear algebra was going to be easy even though my friends told me it would be. lab every week, one discussion every week, 2-4 lecture checks every week, quiz every single week is kinda crazy. Then to top it all off an oral final that is worth 20% of my grade. I wouldn't take him again -- im not a math major so this is too much
No one wanted to take his class, so he remained anonymous during registration to avoid being identified. Once the semester began, he revealed himself and came down hard on the students. An oral final exam in math — something unheard of — was suddenly imposed. God knows how many students will miss their dreams because of his teaching.
While registering Math2B, be careful. Do not select M Staff and Zachary Judson may be hiding there and appears once all other's waitlist are full. By this trick, he is able to get a class. De Anza management should notice this. It is impossible to score better in Zachary Judson's class. I shall never recommend his class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I have never had this bad experience with any professor in my life. He is so rude and he won't care about yours grade at all no matter how much effort you put or how hard you try. Even an A+ student won't be able to succeed in this class. Material is fun but how the class is structured is definitely not.
Didn't inform us before that the 20% finals will be oral, this is not a communication class what is this. Too late now to drop and I don't want to have oral final as I have speech problem and it gets worse in stress.
too much work for a 5 units class. His lecture videos aren't enough for the kind of assignments. His ratings are so bad that he knows no one will take his class and initially comes as Staff M and then tortures us later. This quarter he wanted to be extra and took oral final.
Lecture videos per week which are not very useful as they don't help much with assignments, now you will think you can just fast forward the lectures? No, he as lecture check quizzed that have very specific questions on the lecture videos. To make it more difficult, he frames the question in a way thats hard to understand. time waste.
His lecture videos aren't helpful, and there's no time to read the books. Yet, he expects us to watch them thoroughly and repeatedly just to answer tricky quiz questions. We're so focused on hunting answers that we miss the overall content, fail to grasp concepts, and end up wasting time.
Go to Foothill.
more work than 6 units class. The oral final(20%) which makes no sense because math oral itself is very odd.
Don't waste your time with this guy. There was way too much work for the amount of credits you will receive. He does not care about his students and never explains why he takes away points for no reason. This was an async class, but he was unreachable by email. The final is an oral exam, which makes no sense for a math class.
Do not take his class, easily De Anza's worst professor. You will not learn a thing, and your GPA will suffer. The most confusing lectures and even more complicated assignments. He does not care about his student; he wants you to fail. Final is 20% of your grade, and it is an ORAL EXAM! There is something seriously wrong with this guy; avoid him!!!
This is the worst professor I have ever had. I have no idea how he got hired. He does not know how to teach, save yourself, and your grade. Go to Foothill.
Is there a way to make the scale go into the negatives?
Hopefully, he discovers that emails exist!
His lecture videos don't prepare students enough for the assignments. His ratings are so bad that he avoids listing his real name initially, appearing as 'Staff M' to trick students into enrolling, only to make the course unbearable. He's doing too much and went even further by adding an unnecessary oral final exam
Foothill is only 15 minutes away..
Hate his class, what a joke of a professor
I'd rate him 0/5, but he'd probably mark it wrong.
This class is why people switch to business majors
in all honesty, i thought i was going to get a C. The class structure itself is tough - group assignments, multiple lecture checks, discussion and lab. An oral final that i thought would tank my grade but it was pretty easy. He's really nice imo but the class is rigorous and super time consuming. take at your own risk. you MIGHT get lucky like me.
At least UC Berkeley students don't have to deal with weekly lab projects, lecture check quizzes, discussion boards, quiz reflections, 1–2 page essay responses on Dodgson Condensation, or an oral final.
This is a TBA class. If a student actually wants to learn more, they should take the in-person class. Also, this is a lower-division linear algebra class, should be focused on problem-solving rather than proofs (even at UCLA and UCB). We did too much unnecessary stuff.
Completely ignore any review that isn't a 1 they are all fake. The review saying "You're being too hard on him" is so obviously him. Don't fall for the ratings, take a look at them. The worst experience in a math class you could ever have. He takes joy in making you and your grade suffer.
We are not able to learn due to unnecessary discussion boards, projects, lecture checks, They are time consuming. He is experimenting with us with his different teaching style and we are badly suffering due to his careless attitude. And now top of all these oral final in math. Midterms are having 8 questions and impossible to complete within 1 hour.
Look at the grade distribution on CampusViz — barely anyone gets an A in his class.
The course is very time-consuming but imo he's a good professor. Lots of material but all the practice solidifies your foundation within linear. I learned a lot and he was helpful whenever I would reach out to him. This course convinced me to take upper division math after transferring.
You are expecting to do a lab project every weeks (with group), quizzes and homework. He did give midterms makeup if class falls below avg, but hard to score. The lab projects are mostly about the proofs, which was annoying. His exams were terrible as well, be prepared for every kind of question (Please make sure you study everything very well).
He himself is a very kind professor, he is understanding. However, his classwork is very heavy, there are at least 3-5 assignments due and group projects every single week. He is very meticulous about his grading, he will mark every single thing that looks off. Please be careful, class average is a C...
Good lecturer, definitely passionate. I can't imagine ever getting an A in his class though. Annoying weekly group labs, and all three midterm averages were below 50%. Take this class if you want to learn calculus, not if you want to get a good grade.
