He is a good overall professor. Always has a photo of his dog to start off class. Would recommend.
W professor. always has pictures of dogs and ensures to answers everyone's questions before moving on.
Practice problems done in class were helpful. There are 6 quizzes which are a large portion of your grade and the lowest one gets dropped. Study the questions you missed on the quiz as it follows a similar format on the exam. Extra credit is offered and is extremely helpful.
Great first year teacher. Does not have many previous tests to use to review, however you can tell he likes his job and he is well respected.
Down-to-earth professor. Martinez loves his dog ruby, which you will be seeing prior to the start of lectures. He is very understanding of students, a big reason why he provides extra credit, preventing students' grades from not tanking after one bad grade, which can be the case given there are only 2 tests. Overall, very good prof for being new.
Dr. Martinez is awesome. He always answers all questions willingly before moving on and has that "There is no such thing as a stupid question" mindset. There are only two exams but with the right amount of effort on the homeworks and studying you will do just fine. Also, he puts a picture of his dog Ruby before every lecture:).
Difficult content especially with little prior knowledge, Dr. Martinez does his best to explain it, and he definently knows the material well. He did his grad and undergrad at TAMU which makes him very knowledgable of the school and how things work.
Chem 107 is a tough subject; there's a lot of content and it moves pretty quickly. However, I feel like Dr. Martines made this class a lot less overwhelming. He's organized, explains concepts well, goes over many practice problems during the lecture, and always answers everyone's questions. The clear structure of his class made it easier to manage
Dr. Martinez is extremely helpful! He always makes sure all questions are answered during lecture and is easy to reach out to outside of class. Just put in the work since Chemistry is a very dense course. I also suggest going to SI and IA sessions!
I had very little knowledge of chemistry before taking this class, so this was a difficult class for me. He did a good job with the lectures and always answered questions in class, so I ended up doing well. He used an iClicker so attendance matters in your grade. He also brought his dog in one day which was cool.
For his first semester, he taught the course like he was in his tenth year. There would be a lot of classes where he didn't go through all the slides, but that's because he made sure to answer every question with a thorough explanation. The class also isn't test-heavy, which I enjoyed. You also get to see a picture of his dog, Ruby, every day.
Uses iClicker, meaning attendance and participation is graded. Shows a picture of his dog before every lecture, and sprinkles interesting and related facts about whatever topic he is covering. The homework style gets repetitive but the program has extra problem questions that can be used after completing the main assignments.
Great professor definitely a must-take. He takes attendance for a grade and asks graded questions via iClicker throughout the class. He was very patient and understanding with me. He shows his dog Ruby every day. Homework can be time-consuming but not too difficult. Sit near the front because engagement is difficult in bigger lecture halls.
Going to every class is a good idea because he uses iClicker. Also the homework gives you a good understanding of the concepts but sometimes will not fully prepare you for the quizzes/exams. He gives some extra credit if averages are low on quizzes and gives feedback on missed questions.
Overall a pretty good proof. The material and examples he presents in class are generally helpful and a good indicator of what test questions may look like. One thing I really appreciated was that Dr. Martinez was very quick and helpful when responding to emails. However, be prepared to read the txt bk and do quite a bit of hmwk outside if class.
There were definitely a lot of mini homeworks every week, but if you split them up during the week as you have the lectures you should have no problem with them. The quizzes and exams were very similar to the questions on the homework and in class. All around a great professor who put a ton of effort into teaching the course
Chemistry isn't my favorite but Dr. Martinez's lectures were clear and made it easy.
This course is supposed to be hard no matter which professor you take, but Dr Martinez made it fun and had a lot of office hours where he would go over previous quiz or hw questions. He gave a lot of extra credit especially if the quiz average was low. Made the class easier. Would definitely take him again.
Made sure to answer any questions students had in or outside of class. Also took time to go over questions most people missed on quizzes during class. There is a textbook for the class, but I did not need to use it. Homework problems are very similar to the quizzes and exams. Uses iClickr for attendance and practice questions in class.
It's Dr. Martinez's first year teaching and I think he does a great job because he knows where we struggle. He gives A LOT OF extra credit and the hw is easy on Cengage. The only downside is his poor handwriting when lecturing... Other than that just pay attention to class it's easy 4.0
amazing prof and really cares about making sure you understand the material. has good lectures and offers lots of resources to learn and extra credit.
This class in general is just a confusing poorly structured chem class. Pay attention to lecture and stay on top homework as much as you can, or the quizzes and tests will suck. As far as Martinez goes, he's a nice guy who is willing to help you and answer questions. However his explanations were a little confusing sometimes.
Moves fast but is pretty good.
I liked him much better than my last chem prof. He covers all material fairly straight-forward & as long as you study the tests aren't too difficult. Tests are online in-class. He does clicker questions every day for credit, so you have to go to class. He tries to make sure quizzes aren't too difficult. Format/wording was most difficult on exams.
The notes he writes are awful, he barely goes over a topic then moves on. Tests are online so no partial credit. you do get your grade back the next day. I studied and failed every exam. SO MUCH ALECS!!!!! he makes everything due at like 10 or 8 pm.I met with him about my grade and he offered next to no help on how to improve it and was so rude.
Lectures are straight forward and he moves quick. There are quizzes to help practice before the test and releases practice quizzes after as extra credit. Doesn't offer much more extra credit or partial credit for tests as the tests are on Canvas in class. Lots of Aleks homework some weeks, but the topics weren't too hard. Uses iclicker. Good prof.
Amazing and passionate chem professor. Must have for Chem 120! He does a bunch of practice problems in lecture so it allows material to actually make sense and stick. He also shows us a pic of his dog in the beginning of every lecture so that is also a big plus!
Dr. Martinez is a really great and approachable chemistry professor! He really knows what he is doing and knows how to convey that knowledge in his teaching. The only downside is that tests are online so there is no partial credit which stinks for workout-problem-heavy tests.
Prof. Martinez is an amazing professor. He gives you a lot of study material for exams and the grading criteria could not be any more clearer. The only downside is that his exams are online, meaning that the work out questions are for full credit. However, this class is effort in, good grade out. If you keep up with the work, you will get an A.
Martinez was hard to get used after my CHEM 119 teacher made it really easy to pass. He makes you think about every concept you're learning and his exams are concept heavy. His quizzes and lectures are EXACTLY what's on the tests, so as long as you study those, easy A.
Dr. Martinez is the sweetest prof! Graded by 4 tests (including final), 4 quizzes (132 total possible points, but max 100), a bunch of aleks but totally doable, clicker points (again, only 100 out of the like 130 possible points), and a few practice quizzes for extra points. SEVERAL times he was awarded points/ partial back just by emailing.
Best professor I've ever had. Cares so much about his students and is great at teaching!
I really recommend taking Dr. Martinez for CHEM-120. His lectures are very clear and thorough and he clearly cares a lot about his students. He makes sure to acknowledge feedback and wants everyone to do well and understand the material. His tests are quite easy if you know the material.
Dr. Martinez clearly cares about his students and constantly makes himself available outside of class. He offers extra credit and practice quizzes in order to help you get ready for the exams. The only thing that I did not like about his class is that his exams are online in-person, which does not allow for partial credit. But overall he is great!!
One of the greatest professors for chemistry here at TAMU. He makes himself available in office hours and wants his students to succeed. While his class is tough, he offers some extra credit opportunities and tries to make the content easily digestible. Ultimately the effort you put it in is the grade you'll get.
The very few low reviews you see here are just from salty people who didn't properly prepare for the exams. Martinez is great and super nice. When I studied using his advice, I did well. When I didn't, I did poorly. That's a pretty good indication that the class is set up fairly and rewards your effort. He's also just a really nice guy in general.
Teaching style took a while to get use to- he will do an example, but then ask for you to do a completely different one for iClicker points. Exams and quizzes are all online (quizzes outside class, exams in class). And no partial credit even though the exams are fill in the blank...even the final. Pictures of his dog were cute though :)
Very cool and chill professor. Very understanding and responds to emails (will give extensions for fair reasons). Gave 3% worth of extra credit. No curves on exams. 3 exams, 4 quizzes, weekly homework, 1 comprehensive final. Overall, take him if you struggle with Chem, take Martinez. PS. He loves his dog.
Great professor. Very clear about what's expected on tests. Lectures have plenty of practice problems and are easy to follow. If you pay attention during lectures/look over the slides you should have no trouble getting a good grade. Offers extra credit too.
Dr. Martinez made chemistry very enjoyable. This was his first semester teaching CHEM 120 so it was rough in the beginning, but he is very open to his students' recommendations. Take advantage of his office hours and SI sessions as they are usually similar to exams and quizzes. Dr. Martinez is a great prof that cares about his students.
Martinez is amazing! Lectures are clear and his tests are fair. He also gives a lot of extra credit. I might end up getting a B in this class, but that's completely on me.
Dr. Martinez is very straightforward in terms of the questions he will ask on the exams and quizzes. He moves fast, but covers the material in depth and provides a great foundation for chemistry. He is very fair with grading and gives extra credit if need be. He is my favorite professor so far and the pictures of his dog are an added bonus.
Dr. Martinez is one of the best professors I have ever taken at TAMU! He is a very nice teacher, provides lots of bonus points for quizzes, and the exams are fairly simple compared to other professor exams. You get helpful practice quizzes, and he actually cares to help students learn Chemistry. God bless this man. Take this professor frfr!
He gives bonus points and helps his students succeed. His tests/quizzes are all online and are not easy, but you can do well if you rework the lecture slides and iclickers. A+ tutoring helped me tremendously. You only need to get most of the points for the quizzes and iclickers to get full points for those categories, so there is a safety net.
There were 1000 total points and Dr. Martinez offered 30 points of extra credit. I went to office hours after doing poorly on a quiz and he explained the problems well. He provides good explanations on exams and quizzes if you miss questions. You only need 100/128 points on quizzes for full credit. He did a lot of practice problems during lectures.
The tests are challenging at first, but Dr. Martinez has grading policies that allow you to make some errors on tests and still come out with a good grade so long as you learn from them. His class is geared around ensuring that his students thoroughly understand the material while still giving them a high chance at good grades. Highly recommend.
Chemistry is a tough subject but if you have to take it at A&M, take Dr Martinez!!! His class is exam heavy and they aren't easy, but he does the absolute most to help his students out. Going to class is a large part of this course and easy points as well as his extra credit quizzes that he offers throughout the semester.
He's super caring, accessible outside of class, and records his lectures. A ton of extra credit was provided and he gives good feedback on quizzes and exams.
He's a fantastic professor who genuinely cares about his students! Gave extra credit and his quizzes were great for preparing for the exams. Even told us some questions we'd have on the final ahead of time. An A is easily obtainable if you pay attention in class and actually put in effort. Actually taught and showed photos of his dog. Take him!
Great professor especially for the first time in this class. He is clearly responsive to student concerns. Explains things well in lecture and all lecture's are recorded. Plenty of extra credit was given out. Only downside is the quizzes which don't really give great feedback. His dog Ruby bumps this to a 5
Dr. Martinez does a lot of example problems in class which are helpful, but he goes very fast and his handwriting is difficult to read. There's no partial credit on quizzes or exams, but he does give a lot of extra credit. 4 quizzes, 4 extra credit quizzes, 3 exams and a final. Homework is on ALEKS. He posts a picture of his dog Ruby every day.
Dr Martinez is amazing! He does lots of practice problems with the class before letting us do one on own with iclicker. The exams and quizzes were kind of hard but he offers a TON of extra credit. He also genuinely cares about his students and wants us to succeed. The best part of the semester was when he brought his dog Ruby to class.
Dr Martinez was absolutely amazing! His lectures were very clear and organized. I clicker was used for attendance and it was apart of our grade. His grading system is very forgiving and he offers lots of extra credit. He was very good at explaining things calmly and clearly and he never stressed me out with the amount of material he taught.Loved him
Martinez is great for chem 120. He goes over so many examples in class and it's clear he knows what he is talking about. The class gets difficult towards the end but with practice it ends up being fine. He explains things very concisely and accurately. All of the people complaining about chem 120 are just the ones that are getting weeded out.
he's amazing!! he understands that chemistry is a tough subject and does everything in his power to make sure his student's understand the concepts.
Dr. Martinez was the best professor I've had to date. He was incredibly nice in both office hours and review sessions. I honestly wish I could've taken him again for Ochem. Super funny, lectures are never stale, and he's really good with grading. I can't stress how good of a professor he is. Martinez is for real a dog.
It's a very fast paced course with a lot of material, and I haven't taken chem before this class, but I can guarantee that my grade would be a lot lower if it weren't for him. He gives a good amount of extra credit, is accessible outside of class, gives good feedback on quizzes, and is a great lecturer/very engaging. Plus daily pics of his dogs!
He is a very good professor, who engages in what he teaches. Lectures are important to go to, but you learn so much. Some of the quizzes are difficult, but in no way is he trying to give you a bad grade. He also shows pics of his dog every day which means he's amazing. Multiple extra credit opportunities as well.
Teaches is that he will show topics on the screen with two to three examples and questions. Went out of his way for office hours. Did not do very well but was not from him just didn't learn well from his teaching style. wish he was a bad prof so i could hate chem but he just wasn't. love him. at times it felt he's the only person who cared abt me
great prof. he explained the material well, but it is a difficult course with a lot of topics covered.
Made my first rate my professor account just to talk about how great of a professor Dr. Martinez is. Cares a ton about his students and has no problems answering questions before, during, and after lectures. The GOAT fr.
Dr. Martinez was a great professor. He had great lectures and was extremely interactive. Attendance was part of the grade but his class was great and it was not very hard to motivate myself to go. Take Dr. Martinez if you can.
He shows us his dog ruby and he just bought a new dog named cobalt. He cares and responds to emails fast and is very very accessible.
He is a great professor that simplifies topics and makes them easier for us to understand. Although I already learnt chemistry in high school, his class gave me a more in-depth knowledge of the subject and allowed for me to connect topics together, and would answer all of my questions. He also brought his dog ruby to class, which was awesome
Good professor. He goes a little fast, but as long as you're paying attention he makes things make sense. Answers questions in lecture very respectfully and answers fully. Gives a non-negligible amount of homework, but it all serves a purpose and helps to solidify material. Takes polls for points in lecture with practice problems.
Dr. Martinez is amazing. He responds to emails ridiculously fast - usually within 30 minutes, even at night. He knows that material is tough but breaks it down to where engineers can understand it. Know how to do the practice questions as they are very similar to what you'll see on quizzes and exams. 100% would recommend him to everyone taking 107
Martinez's lectures are extremely informative and he is a very chill guy to talk to. His office hours are also helpful even if you just sit and listen. He offers some extra credit assignments when quiz averages are low, and he tries to connect with his students. Overall a fun prof to learn from/talk to.
Dr. Martinez is a fair and quite doable chem professor. For someone who has never taken chem before it could be a pretty difficult class, but most people have at least taken basic or honors chem and it's very manageable. Most homework is very brief. His quizzes and exams can be a little tricky but they are quite doable. He's a super nice guy.
Dr. Martinez made 107 a breeze. Both the midterm test and final are taken online. There is weekly homework and some weeks there is more than others. Only one or two weeks had homework that I would consider too long, but his lectures are thorough and it is evident that he wants you to be conceptually strong in your understanding of chemistry.
Martinez is a great professor. I barely squeaked by with an A, and I believe that is mostly thanks to his teaching. Martinez loves Chemistry, and he wants to share that love with his students. I still don't really like Chemistry, but I appreciate his passion for the subject.
Dr. Martinez is a great professor. He clearly loves chemistry and his job as a prof, and it is shown through many things he does. Chemistry is my worst subject but I somehow managed to get an A, and I probably couldn't have done so with a different prof. Very challenging class but opportunities for extra credit and a VERY responsive/caring prof.
Chemistry sucks but Dr. Martinez made it suck less. He is great at explaining concepts and will answer any questions you have during lecture. He is accessible outside of class and will respond to emails very quickly. Quizzes and tests can be tough, but he offered up to 3 points of extra credit. Super caring guy overall!
He would not round my 89.97 up to an A. Horrible.
He is the GOAT! His lectures always start with a picture of his dogs, Ruby and Cobalt. Although his handwriting can be a bit hard to understand, it is bearable. He is accessible outside of class and will help you out on the topics that you are stuggling on.
This might be the best professor at Texas A&M. He cares so much about his class and students. He's so good at explaining things, he's very quick to respond to emails, and his quizzes and tests are fair and relate to the lecture materials. He records lectures and posts them on canvas, but there are iClickers in class so you need to come.
Dr. Martinez the goat. He writes on his slideshows to explain concept. Honestly, the homework was not very helpful for the quizzes or exams, but the workout problems on his slides are almost identical to the quizzes besides numbers. A very fast responder with email and gave a lot of points for an extra credit assignment. Handwriting could be better
Bro is chill af. Cool guy, great teacher. All around least painful CHEM 120 experience you could ask for
This guy is phenomenal. You can tell that he loves chemistry and his passion translates to the class. His method of teaching and giving quizzes and tests are so good. This is a difficult course, but Dr. Martinez makes it as doable as possible as long as you do what he asks. This means weekly assignments, class participation, and youll get an A
Dr.Martinez is a good lecturer and explains concepts well. However, he has the most difficult tests among all chemistry professors and is not someone that you should take if you are trying to get a good grade in the class. You will have to work extremely hard for an A and even then its not guaranteed.
He tries to be like Dr. Edwards with the WPA's but the quizzes and exams are so hard. He is very boring in lecture and can barely read his handwriting. There are iClicker points, but if you tend to not go to class, it will bring your grade down more than up. He also does not curve anything even when 20% of the class got an F on a quiz.
Spectacular prof. His lectures are amazing and he explains step by step how to do problems. Beware of quizzes and tests as they're pretty hard. As long as you do the practice exam and study you should do fine. Don't let WPAs and ALEKS pile up before their deadline as they're pretty time consuming. Final replaces lowest exam score
Honestly I don't understand the hype. He gets the job done but there are no demos and made chem so boring imo, which is a shame. Ppl just like his dog... It was unclear what your avg was, and it's easy to let your grade slip. Could have easily gotten an A, wish I tried a little harder. If you took AP chem it's easy money but don't be TOO careless.
I was never a big chemistry person, but Martinez made his class very interesting and easy to engage with. He offered extra credit opportunities at the end which was huge.
Martinez is really fun and very understanding! Attendance is not "mandatory" but there are iclicker questions in class that count for a grade (you only need 75% of questions to get full credit). Aleks assignments (easy), weekly practice assignments (easy), 4 quizzes (kinda hard but you don't need all points to get full credit). put in work, ex cred
Dr. Martinez's cares about his students and is helpful in office hours. It is essential to understand the iclicker problems and WPA's to do well on the quizzes; understanding the study guide will prepare you for the tests. Tests are heavy on application of the lecture material and critical thinking, so connecting concepts while studying is a must.
Martinez's lectures are engaging with frequent iClicker questions per lecture. WPAs are challenging but offer multiple attempts; understanding it ensures success in quizzes/exams. SI sessions are helpful. Regular effort everyday is essential.
Dr. Martinez is a great prof but he definitely wants to challenge his students, so his test are difficult and you have to prepare. His class has lots of example problems but the workload isn't bad. Lots of assignments are conceptual, so if you don't understand ASK. He is super easy to contact, and was always willing to meet for office hours.
He definitely cares a lot about his students understanding the material, however his tests are very hard compared to the problems that we do in class. If you ask him for help and attend TA sessions, a high A is very attainable. In this course you will get out what you put in. He also offers a lot of extra credit and curves quizzes. TESTS NOT CURVED
Martinez is one of the best professors I have had and he wants his students to succeed. He teaches the material very well and gives lots of examples during class. His homework is challenging but prepares you for the exams. There is a lot of class participation, which boosts your grade and is good practice. Class is heavily math based.
He teaches very well however his quizzes and exams are very very hard. First exam I got a 90 then it just kept getting worse. He is very helpful but he likes challenging his students with very hard questions on the tests.
Dr. Martinez is my favorite college professor of my career thus far! His lectures are very informative and interactive via IClicker, he is very easy to reach via his Office Hours, he has amazing TAs, and he isn't afraid to put some humor and his dogs into his lectures! The people saying he is overhyped just don't like Chem, this guy is awesome!
He is my favorite professor!!His lectures were always engaging and truly made me understand chemistry. Although it was difficult, he gave you all the resources you needed to succeed! He always gave great feedback on quizzes/tests and was always available outside of class. He also had extra credit on tests and a project. Super understanding as well.
DOABLE A. Do NOT skip the extra cred posted near semester's end. His grading policies work for you and are lenient. Show up to class for Iclicker. Make sure to go to SI for material covered after exam 2, gets difficult. For quizzes, you can make a study group, shhh. You WILL do great on the final if you covered acids and bases well w/ practice.
He is great you just have to pay attention, quizzes are easy if you actually study the notes
the class itself starts out relatively slow, but DEFINITELY ramps up by mid-October. He had no other choice but to go quicker during the second half of the year, and that is when I saw my chem grade slowly dropping. If you take him, be prepared to study a GOOD amount for his exams, as he creates his own and are known for being very difficult.
AMAZING PROF.I struggled a lot in this class, chem isn't my thing, but upon reaching out to him he promptly helped me figure out my weaknesses in the class and helped me tremendously. If you're struggling, he genuinely cares about your grade and will take the time to help you. whether you're good or bad at chem, take Martinez.
This professor was so great. If you're looking for a chem prof I would definitely recommend taking him. He starts off slow and kind of rushed the end part but his exams and quizzes were fairly easy and he is a very fun and cool person.
I struggle with Chemistry a lot. When I reached out for help, he took the time to help and showed care for me. His lectures are extremely interesting. Only issue I had with the class is that its not curved, I often did 5-10 points better than the average but still ended with grades in the 80 range. Don't let this deter you, he is an amazing prof.
I loved having Martinez as my professor. His class is a traditional lecture format, but he is a very effective teacher. He takes the time to make sure his students are understanding and actually cares about their success. My one word of warning would be to take his exams seriously. His exams definitely seemed more difficult than some others.
Dr. Martinez is an excellent chemistry professor. No one in my section failed (which is pretty astonishing considering some of the grade averages). He has very good lectures, and his two dogs are a nice bonus. Take his tests seriously, because they were always harder than the other professors. Highly recommend.
Attend class for the participation grade, but rewatch the lecture videos if you don't. I rarely went but found the videos helpful. If you take notes at 2x speed, you can cover entire chapters quickly. The tests are similar in difficulty to the quizzes, so staying on top of the material will help you succeed.
Very nice prof! Quizzes and HW are tough but really prepared you for the exams! His lectures are very clear and definitely made me learn and like chemistry much more! Exams should be taken seriously though, but a B+ or higher are definitely possible!
Dr. Martinez is a good professor and very nice guy. His lectures are good and he explains concepts well, but the dealbreaker is how hard his exams are compared to the other professors. He has something called challenge questions which are really hard and make up most of the exam. If you took AP Chemistry in high school you're chilling in his class.
Dr. Martinez is probably one of the best teachers I've ever had. His lectures were incredible and clear, he had plenty of accessible office hours and always answered questions well. His exams are harder than other 107 profs, but he more than makes up for it.
Professor Martinez is hands down the best professor/teacher I have ever had in my academic career. I was struggling with his class quite a bit throughout the semester and could not understand why. I reached out to him constantly, and he was always responsive, supportive, and extremely helpful. MANIPULATE YOUR SCHEDULE FOR HIM. He is incredible.
Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but there are 4-10 in-class questions for a grade every lecture worth 8% of your grade. Quizzes are only ~10 questions and weighted heavily, so it's easy to get a bad grade if you don't study HARD for it. He goes very fast, but he is very open to questions so definitely ask them and he will explain more.
Show up, ask questions, go to group study hours and you'll be fine!
Professor Martinez runs a challenging but rewarding class. His interactive lectures and engaging style make the material click. The tests are tough, but with the help of Unstuck ai, TAs, and dedicated studying, an A is very doable.
Lectures are recorded and accessible online which was really clutch a lot of the time. The class was easy, but sometimes I'd have to watch supplemental videos on YouTube because certain topics weren't explained very well. Didn't round my 88.9 to a 90 which is understandable, but I'm still salty about that.
The lab was really easy but I got a B because I think its stupid to wear goggles on labs that only use water
Dr. Martinez is such a great professor! He really cares about his students. He made chem so much more interesting and I highly reccomend taking him! He gave practice exams and had extra credit built in. The exams aren't bad if you pay attention and work through his pracrice problems. He has iClicker for attendance.
His lectures are good, and he is organized. Weekly HW. MCQ Exams. Online Lockdown Quizzes.
I really liked Martinez as a chem120 professor. The tests were pretty hard but there is extra credit and the final replaces your lowest test grade. He shows pictures of his dogs before every lecture and that made me look forward to going to class. Pay attention and do all the practice problems he gives in class. Focus on concepts!
Dr. Martinez is an excellent professor. I would highly recommend. This class was extremely difficult for me due to a poor chem background, but he was patient in explaining the concepts at office hours and through email. The assessments are much harder than the homework, so make sure to prepare adequately. Lectures were very beneficial and engaging.
Probabaly, the best prof ever to understand chemistry. Is it easy? No, but I've really learned a lot. Yes, there's other profs who create exams exactly like the ALEKS but Dr. Martinez helps you understand past memorization. Anyway, he's fire and FUNNY??!! Trust, I've posted his weird slides on my spam account, he's funny.
Dr. Martinez is a great lecturer, and he explains concepts very well. He won't test you over anything that he hasn't clearly explained, and if you have an doubts about questions or concepts, he emails back fairly quickly. Student study hours are great if you need a little extra help. Offers a good amount of extra credit as well if you need it!
it's chem 120 so it's going to be one of the more challenging classes you're gonna have to take, don't blame the actual content on him, but he makes this class so much better tbh. a lot of quizzes/assignments/iclicker he created help buffer the grade from lectures, plus the grading categories allow for some leeway. all in all, a silly guy :D
Based on what I heard and feel, he's definitely one of the best or the best professor for Chem 120. He cares about students' thoughts and adjust the due date of quiz if there's holiday conflicting. His lectures are straightfoward and explains with detailed. Definitely take his section if it's available.
A great professor, and by far my favorite ive had while in college. Great lectures, goes over everything slowly and clearly, makes sure everyone understands the concepts. Very funny and shows memes before every lecture. Only bad thing about him are his "challenge problems" to test us. Exams are easy, quizzes are very hard. ~4 hws due every sunday
Great professor- his lectures are extremely understandable. The weekly assignments are very helpful for the exams and understanding the content. The exams can be tough and very conceptual, so they require more studying. If you struggle in chem, he is a very good prof to have. He also records and posts all lectures.
I am so glad I took CHEM 120 with Dr. Martinez. His lectures are very engaging and he makes Chemistry really fun to learning. I HIGHLY encourage you to take Dr. Martinez. I took Dr. Edwards for 119- their lecture/test styles are VERY similar. Not only does Dr. Martinez teach you Gen Chem, he also teaches you what you'll need for O-chem. Great Prof.
Explains concepts clearly and thoroughly during lectures and is patient when answering questions. Lectures are recorded, but iClicker is a portion of your grade so show up to class. Some of the homeworks were difficult, but they're way harder than the quizzes or exams, so I was usually overprepared. He's chill and loves to talk about his dogs.
Dr. Martinez is the best Professor I had during Freshman year. He quickly learned my name and he was always willing to help outside of class. Not that I recommend it, but he even responded to an email I sent him a 11 pm the night before an exam. The only downside with his class is that there is a lot of homework and his exams and final are hard.
I want to first off start by saying I am not good at chemistry and I don't know if I will ever be LOL! However, Dr.Martinez made a chem class that was hard into something I could understand! His lectures are amazing! There is Iclicker and class is mandatory! 3 exams and 4 quizzes (they were difficult but doable)! Study Study Study is my advice!
This professor was definitely one of the best I've had. Although chemistry is difficult to me, he does make it easier to understand. The only thing I will say is that his exams are hard, so just study wayyy in advance and try to understand everything outside of lecture, and the WPA's will help alot!
Easily one of the best 120 profs out there. Explains concepts very clearly and gives you an idea of what to expect in the course through WPAs and Quizzes (ALEKS didn't help me). Also gives ~2% worth of extra credit. As a side note, I wouldn't be too concerned about his "challenge questions" asides from maybe his final. That was kinda hard.
Excellent professor! Explains concepts very clearly in class and iClicker questions each class kept me engaged and really helped me actively learn the content. Helpful in officers hours and truly wants you to succeed. Highly recommend him for chem 120.
Literally the best chem prof ever!! I'm really bad at chemistry and he made it wayyy easier to understand. He gives a lot of homework which is actually really helpful to get a lot of practice in. You can tell he really wants his students to succeed. His exams are a little more on the difficult side, but other than that he is great!! 10/10 recommend
Professor Martinez is one of the best professors I've had at Texas A&M. His lectures are amazing and he explains the concepts well. He is extremely kind and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. His exams are somewhat difficult but he prepares you well for them. Lots of homework but its manageable. Highly recommend taking him!!
Professor Martinez is amazing! He has amazing lectures and makes sure everyone has enough materials to be prepared for exams. The homework is a bit daunting, but all of his exams were fair. If you understood the homework, you will do well on his exams. He was caring and passionate about chemistry. Again, I would recommend this professor!
I hate chemistry as a whole and I find it super hard to understand. But professor Martinez made it some what understandable to me and I was some how able to get an A. He seems very caring and I liked how he would show us pictures of his dogs before class. He also records his lectures which is super helpful when studying for a test. Would take again
Give this man a raise. I took him for both 107 and 120. I sucked at high school chem, but this mans teaching style is INSANE. All I did was rewatch his recorded lectures on 2x speed and redo his lecture problems, and I magically make near 100s on the exams. The content is VERY difficult, but the way he teaches it makes the difficulty a 1/5.
TAKE HIM!! You can do great in his class even if you didn't do great in 119. Emphasizes critical thinking. His handwriting and challenge questions aren't as bad as people make them out to be. WPAs are harder than quizzes/exams. Final was the hardest. His notes are better suited for those with an iPad, and ALEKS could be kinda useless. 20 extra pts!
Yeah, this guy is the best & very kind! Love how he's always looking on ways to improve. His lectures are super easy to follow and are super helpful for learning the material. His class is challenging don't get me wrong, but he's the best 120 prof hands down
Could not say better things. An A is so easy to acheive if you study and review. I honestly only passed one exam and managed a B. But i learned so much with his teaching.
Great Prof! Truly cares about students and teaching chemistry. He pushes you to do better. My one critique is that tests don't evenly cover topics learned - they tend to focus in on one/few specific area(s). I loved this class and overall was not too difficult. If you want an easy A tho I would take a different prof. If you want to learn take him!
UGH I LOVE THIS MAN! He is an incredible professor, easily my favorite at A&M. He is very accessible outside of class and will answer all of your questions. He is so intelligent and kind. His exams are quite difficult, but he has so many avenues to help you study/excel in his class. He holds small study groups right after class. Highly recommend.
Dr.Martinez was a great chem prof! He had good lectures where he focused on doing practice problems. Technically, attendance is not mandatory, but he does have iClicker questions every class that count towards your grade. His tests were challenging, but not impossible. I definitely recommend taking him if you actually want to understand the course.
Worst assignments ever, terribly busy work assignments with no resources.
Awful curriculum. Manual and DG checklist are super vague, and experiments end up taking way longer than they should. Grading is ultra nitpicky and points are lost for literally anything. Also expects super advanced answers to conceptual questions even though the point of taking the course is you don't know that stuff.
Gives excellent lectures and good feedback. One of the best profs for chem 107
Incredible professor, he truly does care for his students and makes sure to answer questions as much as possible—he's even responded to emails within less than an hour. He is the head of TAs for CHEM-117 I think; but the harsh grading issues are definitely more TA-based, not him! Weekly lecture assignments, biweekly lab assignments, really not bad.
Awesome professor, genuinely a nice dude who wants the kids to learn about the content. He oversees the TA's for CHEM-117 and thus gets some negative reviews for that class, but the nit-picky grading for that class is on the TA's, not him. Weekly Cengage assignments do take a bit of time, but they get you to understand the content.
Absolutely horrible! I don't understand why his rating is so high. His tests are so much harder than they need to be and they are easily the hardest exams given by any chem prof. He doesn't give you any reviews he only takes them from Dr Altemose. And he gives you "challenge questions" which he never even talked about in the lecture. Take Rashid G
Martinez himself does not grade this course as it is a lab, but for incoming freshman reading this before the first day, be ready to be frustrated by little points off for everything. Do the expiriments with care, write everything down in your lab notebook, and acutally put effort in on the post labs. Also, study for lab exam (new this year). GL!
If you want to learn Chem 107 at the expense of your grade then take him. If you want to save your grade then take somebody else. His exams are the hardest of all and his lecture slides don't go over any of the challenging questions on the exam. but in office hours he will go over the challenge problems but only after the exam.
Bad Prof take Dr G instead
Awesome prof. Hated chemistry but scraped a B and on with my life now. Dealt with me all semester
Very chill and patient professor, thoroughly goes through material. Encourages students to ask questions and answers all questions with both sincerity and depth. Tests and quizzes are moderately challenging and there could be more practice material but the lecture practice questions, practice exams, and the like prepare you well for assessments.
Hardest tests any Chem prof has given. He gives questions on every test called challenge questions which he never even talked about in class. And he is the only chem prof that doesn't actually make reviews. He is a good teacher but his super hard tests arent worth it. Find someone else if you want to save your grade
Great teacher and can explain problems very well. But his exams are some of the worst exams ever. He gives you questions that he never went over and considers that ways to push us. He takes pride on those questions and doesn't give us enough to solve them. In short if you value your grade don't take him but if you want to really learn chem take him
Really don't know what the recent fuss is. The class is pretty much high school chemistry with some AP elements and the tests and quizzes are made accordingly. Really not a hard class and the quizzes, though a bit tricky at times, still are pretty easy. He teaches everything you need to do well in the class. Again, really not a hard class.
Even though 107 is a difficult class, he's an incredible professor that makes the class interesting. He's really accommodating and always ready to help. Expect the quizzes to be difficult, rewatching his lecture videos are insanely helpful for studying. If you want a 107 experience where you actually learn chemistry, take professor Martinez!
My best professor of freshman year, makes chemistry seem really easy, although it is clear that it is not for everyone. Still, one of the best professors in his department.
This class was just unenjoyable. This class took more time than a lot of my other classes, which for being worth less credits than other classes is crazy. Incredibly harsh grading.
It's wild to me that people will come to one of the top engineering schools in the country and complain about being challenged...Martinez was great. His lectures were engaging, and he's a genuinely nice guy. Always helpful when you go talk to him. Made me go from apathetic to interested in chemistry, which is a big win I think.
Harder homework compared to other profs that WILL have you raging, however, these problems set you up for success on the quizzes/tests. Martinez keeps the class very high energy and fun, he sprinkles jokes throughout the lessons that make them go by very fast. I did not take AP Chem and I worried about this course, but I ended with an A.
Martinez is a great prof who is accessible, explains content clearly, and keeps lectures engaging. However, he has the hardest exams and quizzes in 107 with no reviews and "challenge" questions that you've never seen before. Homework is long and not helpful. It's a class better for people who love chem than to auto ETAM. PS I didn't take AP Chem
Martinez is really nice and a great prof who teaches in a way that everyone can understand. His exams are extremely hard and there's little to no review/practice given out to prepare for them. Don't risk your ETAM unless you really enjoy chemistry. The pictures of his dogs before every class are the only thing keeping me going though
He is a very good teacher but his exams and quizzes are nightmare fuel. If you value your ETAM, dont take him at all
OMG! I dont understand why people say his class is easy. He purposefully makes his class the hardest Chem class just to "push us". Horrible prof for ETAM and if you want to suffer then take him
Very good teacher and overall a nice person. His lectures are very nice and he can actually teach you the material. But his quizzes and Exams are nightmare fuel. You're gonna have to study like you've never studied before cuz he gives you "challenge questions" that you've never seen before. You will learn chemistry but your grade is gonna suffer.
Hardest quizzes and exams out of any chem prof. Take somebody else of you wanna save your grade!
If grades don't matter to you then take him
If you want a good grade in his class be prepared to study like youve never had before. His class took up most of my day. And it was mainly due to his quizzes and exams being harder than the other profs. Overall if you want an easy A, do not take this class
Everyone leaving a 1.0 expects to be spoon-fed an easy A for a fundamental engineering class. Martinez's class does challenge a lot of concepts but is well taught and a cruise as long as you pay attention and stay on top of work. Exams are barely harder than highschool honors chem and a breeze if you do practice exams that he posts.
Martinez is an amazing professor that knows what he's doing. However, because he's so good at what he does, he makes this class very challenging. If you want an easy A, don't take this class. The exams are pretty hard, and so are the quizzes. If you want to learn the content, take this class, but if that doesn't matter, then take someone else.
Unbelievable! I went into his class thinking that even though he gives the hardest exams we would be better prepared for them but it's quite the opposite. He doesn't even give out his own reviews he just takes them from Dr Altemose and they're nothing like the actual exam questions he gives us.
Hardest exams and he doesn't even create his own reviews
Even though it's a lecture of 300 kids, you can tell he cares about everyone. Explains the material well, even for a simplified version of an intro chem class. As long as you attend lecture, you should be good for the exams.
Even if you go to all his lectures you're still screwed up for the exam cuz of his challenge questions that are a billion times harder than what he talks about in his lectures
Dr. Martinez shows a clear love for chemistry which shows in his lectures. Although his exams may be viewed as difficult for some people, attending his lectures, studying the material, and creating your own challenge practice problems can prepare you for any challenge he throws. He also throws in funny things into his slides to keep you entertained
I really wish his exams were easier because otherwise than that he's a great teacher. But his challenge questions that is nothing like what we've seen in his lectures make his class unbearable
Has the worst test preparations out of any of the main chem teachers
Dr. Martinez is a good lecturer who explains, relates material well and answers questions, but his tests are by far the hardest(difficulty rating). No SI sessions and no personalized practice exam. Quizzes/exams -> trick questions. Hard to get an A when we need ETAM! Can know material well and still get a B/C. He aims to challenge students, thanks.
If you rate the GOAT one star because the exams are hard, then you're mistaking challenge for injustice. Hardship is not our enemy, it is our teacher. Chemistry humbled me often, yet I endured, because real success belongs to those who accept difficulty as the price of growth.
The absolute worst prof for ETAM
NOT ABOUT ZACHARY MARTINEZ. You get assigned a TA as ur lab teacher. I just happened to get the literal worst TA imaginable. He grades ur labs purposely to make you fail. Would not help at all on Post Labs even tho the others would. I would spend hours on a post lab only to get a 75. Spend more time doing stuff in this class than any other one.
Dr. Martinez is a great prof, I didn't take chemistry in HS and Dr. Mart is very passionate about chemistry and shows his dogs in the daily lectures, tries to make chemistry enjoyable and easy for everyone. TAKE Dr. Mart.
Decent lectures but incredibly hard tests with ridiculous challenge questions we haven't seen and we can't prepare for. If you value your grade DONT TAKE HIM
he's a great guy, but i took ap and honors chem and did fantastic in them, but i struggled for a B. his example problems in lectures are the basics of a concept, then the exam are insane challenge questions that college board wouldnt even dream up. he would give practice tests from other teachers, but not for his exams, hard to prepare for them
Great guy but man am I bad at chemistry. You can tell he cares a lot about his students and tries to push them more than what other profs would, but for me personally I'm not very compatible with chemistry so this class was hard for me.
First, CHEM107 is going to be HARD (unless you are seriously into chemistry). It's a weed-out class and they recently restructured the course which dropped the overall class GPA by a few points compared to last year. Prof Martinez is the best professor you can get for this course. Participate in class and GO TO OFFICE HOURS and you'll be fine.
He leaves you the most unprepared for exams compared to any other teacher. He doesn't make his own reviews and his tests are the hardest. If you want a better grade in CHEM 107 there are better teachers
I hadn't done any Chemistry since my sophomore year of high school before this class, and Prof Martinez was the best professor I could have taken. I thought I was going to be very weak in Chem but his lectures were straight to the point, easy to understand, and very engaging. I'll miss his chemistry memes and Ruby and Cobalt updates.
Dr. Martinez is a great lecturer if you actually pay attention and are engaged in class. He does a great job of explaining all the topics and relationships in between those topics. This class, however, is hard, especially if you never took AP Chemistry. His exams are hard, but they are not bad if you actually understand everything.
I don't understand why he wouldn't create his own reviews since he had the hardest exams out of any teacher
The professor you have doesn't matter because your TA does everything, from the labs to the grading. I got really lucky with my TA and I was used to doing lab reports from high school, you just have to follow every single little detail on the rubric! Added a final exam and haven't gotten it back yet, but made sure to get to the final with an A.
Labs in general are straightforward, but grading for the post-labs is very strict. If you put time and effort into everything, you'll be fine. TA's will determine your grade, so hope for the best!
He wouldn't round my 89.85 to a 90
Bad tests with little to no preparation due to him taking reviews from another teacher
If you want an A in his class and didnt take AP Chem like me, then you better be prepared to study your tail off, cuz his tests don't have good reviews, no SI sessions, and they are the hardest exams for no reason. He says its to "push us"
Wouldn't wish his class on my worst enemy
Let's not conflate this course's difficulty with the professor's quality. Will this course and its contents be challenging and time intensive? Yes, as are most college level courses. Is prof Martinez's ability to teach the course lacking? Absolutely not, prof Martinez is one of the most caring and skilled CHEM profs you could get for CHEM 107.
Dr. Martinez was an amazing professor that really aimed to challenge every student. His office hours are incredibly helpful for either clarifying, or achieving a deeper understanding on topics discussed in lecture. He is a very good lecturer as well, adding the right amount of humor into the lesson without compromising on the course material.
Prof Martinez teaches concepts at a very basic level, but his quizzes and exams esp the challenge questions were way harder. He provided Dr. Altemose's practice exams, which didnt reflect his test difficulty. There was a lot of self-teaching needed, and I ended with a stinging B. I wish I'd taken someone else.
Lab is atrocious. TAs forget they're grading first-year engineering students and not doctoral level chem grads, and it also reflects on Martinez for letting it happen. They also don't curve at the end contrary to the syllabus so if you end up with a hard TA you're out of luck. Had a high 70 under by far the strictest TA and didn't even curve to B.
The class moves at a really fast pace, to the point where I don't think you can easily follow the lectures if you haven't taken some chemistry course in high school. Martinez is an amazing lecturer, and does help there. Quizzes tend to have harder questions tests, and Martinez loves to add questions on tests that you'll have never seen before.
He can quickly explain concepts well and helps you understand concepts very quickly. However, his lectures do move very quickly, along with lots of practice questions. He was generous with giving bonus points, but did not curve tests or grades. He gave the hardest test of all the teachers, but they where doable if you pay attention and practiced.
Amazing professor, explains concepts super well and cares a lot about students' feedback.
