Even though calculus sucks it's hard to hate this guy cause he's a really cool guy. Writes down every word he says and posts all his notes online. Homework three times a week but as much as I hate to admit it, it actually helped. Any cal class is gonna be hard but this guy works hard and REALLY CARES. Awesome TA too.
really cool teacher. calculus is hard at UT but this guy really breaks it down for you. he writes everything and post it on Blkboard at first was annoying but helpful. 3 tests. GO TO OFFICE HRS, he will help you out alot. if you can't make office hrs he will make an appt for you one-on-one. really cares about his students.
He really makes you think, that's just his style of teaching.
He is a great teacher, just makes you think. Class can be difficult at times, this section of the class is actually the hardest one. If you want to Breeze by, I suggest you take a different section.
This is by far the worst professor that I have had at UT. He never responds to emails, he assigns failing grades on homework assignments even when the students try, will not answer any questions in class (wants you to find the answer on your own) BUT then expects you to know the answers on his exams. Many students were in tears after the final exam
This by far the worst professor you could ever take as an education major! This man looks like tarzan and acts like it too. If you have never done proofs before you will suffer like crazy. This class is all about "failing fruitfully" whatever the heck that means. This class will not, I repeat WILL NOT help you teach students in the future. Bye!
Notes are posted online, attendance isn't mandatory. His lectures are super clear and in-depth. He assigns a problem set every week which takes a few hours to complete. The tests can be challenging, but you'll be fine if you understand the material and the homework problems. He's a fair grader. I enjoyed Dr. Miner's class and would recommend.
he likes to do a lot of proofs in class and assigns a lot of proofs for homework. lectures are pretty clear and he posts notes online. he teaches in a pretty laidback way. tests aren't too hard if you really understand the concepts and know what you're doing.
Dr. Miner taught straight out of the textbook. He literally had it open as he went through explanations and examples. Going to class helped some but was definitely not required to learn - the textbook is pretty good and how I learned the material. Not a great professor, but not a hard class.
Miner is a pretty good math professor. Though he focuses a lot on proofs, rather than examples, this will help you get a better understanding of why the math works instead of just how to do it. If you attend every lecture and discussion, the class is fairly easy.
He writes down what he is thinking and describes the problems on a piece of paper while lecturing, and later posts those notes, allowing you to go over what happened in class. He also creates very comprehensive and useful summaries of what needs to be learned for each test. While there is a lot of homework, it was comparable to other M408D classes.
Dr Miner was a great professor. He is really invested in the progress of his students and makes good attempts to relate to everyone in the room. The class itself (when I took it) was flipped so that we proved theorems for homework and presented them in class. While this approach was challenging at first (and a lot of work), it paid off.
He doesn't teach anything. If you need ideas on how to get started on a proof, he has to think about it as if he doesn't know how to prove it. When presenting, he takes his sweet time asking questions, then assumes everyone can stay 5-10 minutes after class ends (doesn't ask if we can, just assumes it, even if you have class/exams directly after)
Great Professor! He really cares about the subject but strongly encourages individual inquiry. Which is necessary in a proof based class such as this. His phD is in Number Theory, and it is evident that he is very knowledgable and very willing to help his student grow. Expect a good amount of work, but the exams are not hard.
Ok attention, do NOT take this professor's class. This is not coming from a student who took him for a week, but for a whole semester. He is the worst professor I have ever had. Attending lectures is useless. Expect to teach yourself the course. He doesn't supplement your readings but rather dictates it. His tests have proofs.
Great teacher. Open to individual help and questions. Posts in class notes online, but you really need to go to class because math is challenging. Loves to connect with students. Lots of work, but it helps!
Miner is a nice guy and will help you out if you put in effort, but good luck staying awake through the lectures. He does his best to make them interesting, but calculus just isn't a fun subject. Hard tests.
Super cool dude! The IBL format of discrete means that we spend the first half of class proving theorems in groups and then presenting them at the end of class, which makes it pretty engaging/fun. Laid back class and laid back teaching style but you still learn a lot and improve your proof-writing skills. v helpful guy, 10/10 would recc.
One of my favorite professors at UT. His class is attendance heavy because he explains so much in class regarding proofs. You will have to ask him a lot of questions, but he's a great professor.
Dr. Miner has good intentions and wants to help you, but wasn't good at teaching. Lectures were super dry and not very helpful. I learned mostly from the notes being posted after class. There is a quiz every week (2 are dropped), 3 tests (one is dropped), 2 homework assignments a week (3 are dropped), and a final that is 30%.
I took this as an independent inquiry flag, and it was a tough class. Miner was a great professor, but due to the II flag, the class was mostly groupwork. Even though I did all the homework and was attentive in class, I still fell behind. Miner was available to help me go from a D to a C+ in the last two weeks of class and was clear in explaining.
2 quest assignments and 1 quiz each week. Lectures are basically the textbook, and he puts his lecture notes online, although I still find it helpful to attend lectures. He sometimes hints at what will be on the quizzes/tests. Learning the material will be on your own though, and the quest homework takes forever to get through.
Basically he's a great professor in that he will do whatever it takes to make sure you understand it. However the test material is challenging and the reviews are not that helpful.
He's a really good 408D professor. Lectures are sometimes dry but he is always passionate about teaching. 2 quest HWs and a quiz a week which can be time consuming. 3 Tests (lowest is dropped) and a final that pretty much decide your final grade. Going to class is important to stay on track. He was very helpful in office hours for harder concepts.
He's a very sincere and genuine teacher - wants you to really understand the material. One of the better math professors I've had at UT, however, his teaching style is to leave it up to the students during class rather than a lecture-style classroom setting.
Lecture's were pointless. Class is basically self-taught
This is the class you don't need to listen to his lecture, just read the textbook and you will do fine.
Dr. Miner is a very passionate professor who loves mathematics and has a great sense of humor. (Very "Tim and Eric" kind of humor.) Lectures were a bit dull mainly due to proofs, but overall I learned a ton.
Dr. Miner was straightforward and caring. Others may feel that he was boring because he followed the textbook. However, he posted all lectures notes on Canvas, so we could review materials later. I even went to class only on exam days, but I still made a A. The exams are easier than I expected, but his grading was strict. He always replied email
Beware taking this class. During class he just proves things, but is cumulative on info for tests
The nicest and coolest professor I've ever had. I had him for discrete math, I've heard he's harder in linear algebra, but he's super nice and understands that students have lives. The best professor I've ever had. He's good at teaching and kind. The class has a lot of homework tho.
He cares a lot about his students and the content of the class. However, he very rarely lectures and hopes that the students will figure out things on their own which is frustrating. He gives great feedback when grading and is accessible after class. 2 take-home tests that take HOURS to complete, and one outside of class test that's not too hard.
took as an II flag. basically proved every theorem in book. HWs due everyday. the class was hard, but Miner is very caring and will help you until you figure it out if u go to office hrs. Definitely one of my fav math profs. BUT the class & tests are still hard. tests ranged from 4 to 7 questions.
His class is based purely on class participation, which means everyone presents their solutions to problems during the semester. There is homework due every class, and sometimes it is from class and other times it is a journal response. He grades slightly hard, but always allows corrections to earn points back. He cares and wants you to do well.
The way this class is taught (with the qualitative reasoning flag) is better than any other math Ive taken at UT. Prof will explain a concept at the start of the class then we get into groups and do examples on the board. This is way more involved than most math lectures and I learned way more as a result. Discrete is still Hard, but this helped
He cares a great deal about his students yet his teaching style is extremely frustrating. He just lets the students figure everything out on their own therefore this class is you teaching yourself and learning from others. Every problem is presented in class by students, this does not mean their answer is right or their methods are helpful to you.
He cares about his students. Gives quizzes during discussion meetings once a week, but the quizzes seem to never have anything computational to do with the unit we were on, they felt like a waste of time. A LOT of homework. Exams are alright. Overall, I wouldn't take this class again because it's very learn-it-yourself and was not engaging at all
Dr. Miner is a great prof. Very energetic, simplifies new topics and his notes are easy to follow if you miss a lecture. The TA's were solid, but if I was confused on any topic, I just went to Miner's office hours and those were super helpful too. Cares about your well-being and you truly learning the material, not just getting a grade.
Class isn't very engaging, and the way the professor lectures (1 hour+ long) tend to focus more on the "proofs" and "theoretical" of calculus, which only ever help on quizzes. If you are going to take his class, the TAs and homework are really helpful for the more applicable maths (word problems, etc.), while the professor is only good for proofs.
Dr. Miner has been my favorite math professor at UT. He doesnt lecture a lot but he would make sure every student understand the material. He is a kind, caring, and charming person, and of course he knows a lot of number theory.
SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Miner is a nice professor and a good dude, but the daily homework is insane. The flipped Ind. Inquiry set-up didn't work for me personally at all, I needed guidance on proofs, but he wanted me to do it all myself. ALWAYS GO TO CLASS, don't start skipping. Was looking forward to NumThr but I don't like it any more at all.
I actually took M316K but that wasn't an option on here. This is the worst and most frustrating class I have ever taken. He does not teach anything in this class and just expects students to know all the information. Class solely consists of students presenting their solutions while he sits there and berates you. Do NOT take this class.
This wasn't the most conventional approach to math, but I really appreciated it. Dr. Miner forces students to figure out WHY things work and not just "how," which will make us better teachers. Do the extra credit offered at the very beginning and don't underestimate the class. Dr. Miner is fair, but you have to do the work for sure.
Be prepared for lengthy homework assignments due before EVERY class. Theyre useful but take time, when you have to present in class be aware that you will be critiqued harshly in front of the class. Participation is 30% of your grade and he doesnt input it until grades are finalized. Went from an A+ to a B- on the last day because of this.
Horrible. Please do not take him. If you want to write proofs all day and night then take him. This course is very proof heavy and you will be forced to present on a daily basis to peers. The book is all you get to use and that's it. He doesn't lecture and that's what makes this course so hard. You have to make up ideas for proofs on your own.
His class is very doable! He requires you to write every little thing while solving questions, and he will help you figure out how to do it if you ask. There is homework everyday and you must present a few times.
Professor Miner is wonderful. While I didn't do great in his class, he is extremely understanding and wants to see students succeed. If you're willing to work, I recommend him. Even if the odds are against you, he will work with you to see you succeed.
The workload for this class is excessive, the IBL format makes it especially difficult. However, Dr. Miner is very caring and will help with accommodations when required. I personally disliked the class and the format, but Dr. Miner is definitely accessible outside of class.
You will have easily 10 hours of hw for this class every week its insane. If you learn from normal lectures don't take this class he takes Independent Inquiry to the extreme and won't even tell you when you have the right answer.
Dr. Miner is clearly interested in teaching this subject but the way he does it is not particularly helpful to someone with no knowledge of the material. He spends the first half of the lecture explaining proofs for a topic he has not fully explained and only gives a few examples of the final concept afterward. You need the TA for this class.
Dr. Miner clearly knows the material he is teaching, however there seems to be a gap between what's taught in lecture and what is actually on the tests. While not mandatory, it felt necessary to attend the TA discussions because it provided actual examples to the conceptual topics we learned in class. Also, be ready for lots of lengthy homework.
Number Theory with Miner was probably the hardest class, but also the most impactful. Be prepared to grind through endless homework, but the repetition is also what helps you to really learn. Classes are all student presentation based, since it carries the II flag. Miner will challenge you in your ideas so that you can improve your proof abilities.
The lectures are spent going over long proofs that could be shortened to at least half the time. Get comfortable with outside learning because you will not learn much during lectures. Most of the learning is through the TAs in discussion or through outside sources. I recommend having already taken a calculus class or not taking this professor.
Professor Miner is a very good professor and explains calculus properly. For an intro to calculus class, it is very heavy with lots of homework and information to intake. Thankfully, Prof. Miner makes the lecture very accessible online and in person which is a plus. Exams are difficult and coursework is heavy but a good choice to take.
Please take anyone else for M408C credit. Have heard a lot better from other professors so if you find them, take them. Although an A is possible, the full 90 minute lectures mixed with concept-based notes instead of examples that end up being on the test make it really difficult to learn at all. Learned most of the course from the TA, not the prof
Weekly quizzes are reasonable. Test questions are much more difficult than any other practice questions provided including homeworks. Homeworks on quest are only practice provided other than textbook. Lectures are useless for solving homework problems. Do not take this professor.
Professor Miner is a very smart man, which was why his lectures were hard to understand.Understanding HW meant collaborating with the TA, classmates, and Sanger Learning Center. If you want to be challenged and increase your critical thinking, then Miner is great. Other than that, his class may make you cry lol.
I took multi in high school, so I was familiar with the material in M408D. However, without prior experience or lots of studying, this class would likely be very tough. Homeworks are assigned after each lecture on UT Quest, which are challenging but prepare you well for the exam. Exams make up the majority of your grade and are hard but doable.
If you enjoy proof-based math, you'll like this class. If not, you'll hate it
This course is independently taught. You'll have to prove 10-20 theorems as homework each week without any outside resources. Expect it to take 5-10 hours a week. The course is challenging, but you'll learn the material inside and out. The exams are challenging, but fair, and he grades very generously.
Miner takes II to the next level with Number Theory. Get ready to spend 10-15 hours each week doing homework and essentially writing your own textbook and presenting them in class. His exams are also insanely tough and each question weighs so heavily. Good prof tho, although he never clearly gives you an answer to the question or a problem.
Dr. Miner is by far my favorite professor I've taken. Go to office hours and get to know him! He adapts to your learning style to help you understand. He is really caring and wants his students to succeed and view mistakes as a chance to learn and try again. I was terrified to take calc but he made it approachable!
I admit that Miner is an okay professor, but majority of his teachings is lecture heavy and spent on proving functions, little to no explanation for example problems on how to do the homework's. 2 homework's & quizzes weekly (homework 10%, quizzes 20%), exams are worth 40% so if you bombed an exam (not the good kind) then you're basically screwed.
Take his class. Miner's class is test and lecture heavy, but he's flexible and understanding about grades. Quizzes are based on lectures. Go to his office hours because he will help you. I took calc in HS so i found it a bit easier to understand the class based on how he teaches.
Only take if you are solid on mathematical logic. Really fun, but a lot of work. You have to prove by yourself every single theorem that the material covers. Lectures consist of students presenting the proofs of theorems they did. Really sharpens your logic, gives you good grasp of basic number theory, and is fun. Again, lots of homework.6-9 hrs/wk
The class is definitely a lot of work, but if it wasn't it wouldn't be taught right. I was really nervous about the presentation part but it was super chill. I honestly bombed the first exam but Miner was there to help me so much afterward, super nice guy. I would take him again!
Really nice guy.
Honestly not sure why this prof has high ratings because this class was one of the main reasons I dropped out. Professor talks to students very condescendingly if he deems them 'unintelligent' because they missed a step of logic while presenting a proof and determines that they copied (when they could've honestly forgot how they did a step).
He is a very chill guy, and if you are willing to put in time (5-10 hrs) a week doing proofs, the exams and classes will go by very smoothly. It's not an easy class, but he is willing to work with you doing help hours. If you are struggling he will try to help. This class helped me a lot getting over my nerves with proof-based classes.
Dr. Miner is very passionate about what he teaches and wants you to succeed but it's a lot of sit-down-by-yourself brute-force learning and office hours are a MUST. Dedicate maybe 4 hours per homework, much of which is deciphering math-jargony definitions. The only examples you have are the presentations by other students
You WILL learn how to write proofs after this class. This isn't a traditional class. He doesn't use a textbook, but instead he will give you problems to prove outside of class, and then a certain number of people present in class, proving theorems that otherwise would just be given to you. 2 midterms and 1 final each have 4 proofs. Recommend 100%.
Tests are 40% of the grade and there were only 2, so if you bomb any it's game over. Lectures don't help at all. Quest problems and TA kind of help but overall it was difficult. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Only two tests. So if you do bad on a test its game over. Just lock in I guess good luck.
I do not recommend that you take this professor. The exams are pretty difficult and you are screwed if you mess up one of the exams. The exams are also graded harshly. Quizzes are light but they do not accurately reflect the difficulty of the exams. His lectures are also really hard to understand. Take a different professor if you want an easy A.
2 homeworks (overall 2 dropped) a week takes a lot of time but will prepare you for the 2 midterms and mandatory final. Weekly quizzes (1 dropped) are similar to FRQs on tests. There isn't enough time to fully explain topics during lecture so YouTube videos will be your best friend! Dr. Miner is a great professor, M 408D is just a difficult class.
Professor Miner is a great guy, like the flag however, it is an inquiry based learning course. You will spend about 10-12 hours per week on average proving theorems from a textbook and presenting them in class. If you're able to keep up with the dramatic amount of homework you'll do well, but sometimes it will take forever.
I think people who haven't taken Calc BC would find this class pretty difficult. Lectures focused on the proofs for the different tests/techniques, which didn't help much in solving problems. Homework is also pretty long and time-consuming. However, the quizzes/tests are very easy if you do the homework. He is very helpful during office hours too.
The class is simply students presenting their proofs, so the learning has to come on your own outside of class. However, the textbook is very well structured. Overall, he doesn't provide much during class, but he is very knowledgable during review sessions. Also, he never lets you out of class on time, which was annoying.
Class is tough won't lie, but if you do the Quests and learn the content you can get an A Not an easy class by any means but Dr. Miner tries to help everyone out
Lectures are focused on proving identities/theorems instead of working practice problems that are relevant to the exams. Two homework assignments every week with ~20 problems each which is pretty excessive. Overall, you have to teach yourself the concepts and this class definitely isn't an easy A with Dr. Miner.
Took calc BC and got a 5, but the way Dr. Miner lectures is not my style at all. He's more into the proofs and theorems, so there is a lack of example problems. If you're a visual learner with actual problems being worked out, I suggest you not take this course or heavily rely on going to discussions. 60s on both midterms, 95 on final bc I studied
too many proofs, lectures were hard to understand and easy topics were made to be extremely confusing. hw was incredibly time consuming and tests were significantly more challenging than hw problems. make sure you study for the tests because they are weighted extremely heavily, and no extra credit. class couldve/shouldve been a lot easier
I really liked his lectures and found his office hours very helpful.
Dr. Miner is awesome and he's super caring. He wants his students to succeed and gives good feedback, and while the self taught course format is difficult, you're gonna end the semester knowing everything.
Great proofs class. The class style was students prove every theorem in the textbook as homework, and during class, Dr. Miner would call on students (in round-robin fashion) to prove the theorems in front of the class. Patient and caring professor, provided good critique and tips for proofs/presentations. Lots of homework but tests weighed 65%.
lectures are him going over a long, typed out document, working through example problems and proofs. i found these lectures to be very fluffy and wasteful of time, as he tends to go over unnecessary proofs and the typed notes are just fluff, not very useful (except for a few sentences explaining key concepts). LONG and hard homeworks, harder exams.
Yes, he's nice guy, but the classes consist of presenting proofs, and if we couldn't prove them he would never show us the answer. We just couldn't use that proof in any future assignment. The exams were very difficult, and I do not feel like I learned much. This is the first class I didn't get an A in, and I can't believe I even passed.
If you are going to take this guy, make sure you study thoroughly and practice as much as possible. The tests are pretty hard. Make sure you have great time management skills as well. You will learn a lot in this class, and you will write proofs very well by the end. Study the practice problems for tests and review concepts in homeworks.
Beware of lots of work in this class. He made the class harder than it had to be, even for an independent inquiry class.
M341, most challenging class I've ever taken, but Miner makes the class much simpler, explaining it to you like the textbook is in a different language. Genuinely wanted us to understand why and how proofs were formulated. Exams are all open ended proofs or matrices, good partial credit, but a good person and professor overall. Take him over others
students present proofs of their hw every class, prof does not teach. very hard to learn the concepts and he is a tough grader on the exams
the worse class ive ever taken at ut. do not take him!!!
Miner is a great and caring professor. This course satisfies the IBL requirement, so set your expectations accordingly. I found Dr. Miner to be a great help in learning to write better proofs and tackling non-obvious problems. Exams felt scary in the moment, but applying problem solving techniques learned in class are enough to solve them well.
I had all As throughout college before this class, it's SO hard. He grades exams super rough, and they're always really hard. Class is just students presenting their homework from the night before, so not helpful at all. Miner is super nice and will help you in office hours. He's a great guy, but take someone else who actually teaches.
Homework took me a while. Did not enjoy the IBL format as much as I thought I would. Great guy and accessible. Course majorly lacks feedback for a proof writing course. If you're going to pay to take this course just take it with someone who teaches it. Number theory is not a class you want to teach yourself.
