Simple, not a lot of material. Sometimes we spent half the class reviewing some simple concept we learned last class. Tests are easy. He has extra credit. Its an easy A or B. Hes pretty interesting too.
I loved this course. It is very well structured, very predictable, no surprise quizzes. Just make sure you read weekly. Int. material, very interesting professor.
I took Soc 101 a couple of years ago and i HATED it. This time around, i LOVED it. The teacher is great, the text is great, and yes, there is the extra credit. I think that this course in particular should be required for all VCU students. what else? oh yeah...Zach Goodell kicks a**.
This guy is a decent guy in front of the class, but talk to him 1 to 1 and he treats you like boot lick. I tried to talk to him once and he just passed me off. He grades based on attendance. I had a b average, but since i missed 3 classes i got a d. suck my di**.

Mr. Goodell is an awsome teacher. I barely had to take notes from the book because his lecture pretty much covered everything on the tests. I did read the book which made the topics even more clear for me. He is easy going and will work with you. Great class. He is also pretty funny.
He's a great teacher. His lectures are informative and entertaining, he's a funny guy. I would recomend everyone take his class.
this guy is so boring and he isn't funny, the only people who laugh are the people who sit in the front and try to suck up. he goes over the same stuff every class and treats us like we are stupid and can't understand simple concepts
he's a pretty good teacher, it's a good idea to go to class, because he pretty much covers what you need to know in your lectures.
Easy B if you come to class everyday and read the assignments at least once. Just have to work a little more for an A. He is willing to work with you on any problem you have. He knows how to work the CPS. He's a joker.
THE ONLY REASON I TOOK THIS CLASS WELL I NEEDED IT BUT MY FRIENDS TOLD ME THAT HE IS CUTE. SO I DID. AND HE IS CUTE. EVEN THOUGH I GOT A C IN THIS CLASS IWOULD STILL RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO TAKE HIM
I took this in Fall 2002. early in the freaking morning it was but its a good and easy class to take. Hes a good teacher easy test. I was late just about every day goodness he remembers me still. Holds study sessions. I got a B an A is what I would of gotten If I was not so sick for the first test oh well.
I took this class fall '04 and I loved it, I had him for the 8am class but his class was definatly easy to stay awake in! he knows how to teach and sometimes that's a rare thing with professors! I wish he would teach more classes above 101 i would love to take them!!
Clear lectures. Not too nice after class but great during class. Does CPS for attendance and grades based on attendance. Easy tests.
Very funny. Uses the text religously. But take notes you sometimes need them. Don't turn in extra credit late. He won't count it if you do. He likes people who speak up in class. He takes atnd. by giving a short quiz at the begining end of class.
Oh yeah he is really HOT too! Cute eyes and a cute smile. Enjoy ladies!! And guys who swing that way! :)
This man needs to teach some other prof.'s how to give interesting lectures. had him 3 days a week at 8am and i totally forgot i was in a lecture he makes the subject so interesting. the hour flies by and when i missed class i was mad at myself for it. if you attend the lectures and dont sleep thru them you will understand the material and pass.
zach is a rad dude. his lectures were fun, even at 8 am. he is a gifted teacher. awesome!
He is an awesome teacher. He made the lectures very interesting at 8am. His test are easy as long as you study.
Very good professor. Made an 8 a.m. class interesting. i recommend him to anybody taking sociology 101.
HES GREAT!!! made a 8am class not so bad!!!
Basically study what he says in class and refer to the text book. CPS questions are easy if you've read the text for the day's reading. The CPS are his way for attendance and quizzes. Tests are easy; notes & book. MWF 8am - 850am and I'm a commuter. It was basically the ONLY class that engaged me! Excellent teacher and cute too.
this professor is the greatest teacher ever, he keeps you interested even at 8am
Very cool.
Funny guy, no fun to talk to outside of class, treats you like you're worthless... which is weird cuz he seems like the coolest guy ever when he's lecturing. Class gave me a new outlook on life. Most CPS questions are test questions, so write them down. Tells you when something is a test question too. Easy A, just go to class and listen.
Great guy, really funny, keeps you awake which is good for an 8-8:50am class.Lectures are very interesting.Really gave me new look on life. Clicker questions help grade. Do the extra credit paper, its worth it. Really enjoyed class. Tells it like it really is. Readings and lectures, really help on exams, so go to class.Lots of opportunity to pass
Jokes too much, sometimes innapropriate. Anyone who says that they liked him is probably 18 years old and lives in the dorms. All he does is joke about his lame sex life, and drinking. His subject matter is good, when he is on task. Anyone who is interested in getting their moneys worth out of the course so look elsewhere for a diff. professor.
Interesting lectures for the most part. His shtick was pretty funny. The reading outside of the book was very pertinent to the material in the classroom. Gave me a fresh outlook on some aspects of life. A very easy B if you come to class and at least glance over the assignments, a relatively easy A with a little more effort. Highly recommended
He was the BEST teacher i've had in my college career..Absolutly amazing, and if you actually apply yourself to this class you'll learn a whole lot and trust me you will be a whoel lot smarter leaving this class. This class is great to get people thiking. There is a lot of reading/studying to do, but its worth it! AMAZING Professor!
Good guy, very fair teacher. Tests are very easy, just read the text/assignments and do the clicker questions and it's an easy A. Some people say this guy is worth getting up at 8 AM versus the other sociology professors - not true. It's a decent, easy class, but that's about it.
He's definitely passionate about his teaching subject, and gives interesting lectures. His handwriting is nearly illegible but if you're paying attention to what he's saying it doesn't really matter. 50 question multiple choice tests that can be fairly challenging because much of his material isn't in the book
has a crude sense of humor which is really good for an 8 am class. tests are pretty easy, you'll at least get a B if you read over the notes and come to class
Very good teacher. The class is pretty easy, 4 tests throughout the semester and clicker questions(count for your grade as well) Very good about posting up grades and what not. Totally take his class, he is very passionate about what he is teaching, certain sections more then others.
Great professor. Makes class enjoyable and open to debate.
Most definitely a good teacher, and a good class. You can tell he wants you to take more away from the class than just test answers you'll never remember. I learned a lot about society and life in general. That being said, he's tests are tough, but he balances it out with a research paper and participation grades. It's worth your while
This professor is not good. He is sarcastic, dry and unfortunately full of himself. Do not take this class. He will also bore you to death AND none of us ever knew what he was talking about. EVER.
Zack is a GREAT TEACHER! You have to study &come to class but it will be all worth at the end! I struggled on the first 2test but I met with him &never missed class &did my best on the last test &the paper &I got a B in the class!! He knows what he is talking about.I wanted to cry on the last day of class because he Literally changed my life!
If you show up to class and take good notes, you will get a B or A. Just put in a little effort and you will get an A. He is so easy to talk to and is a fair grader. Very helpful.
Goodell is a great professor. As long as you come to class, take solid notes, and read the chapters you'll be fine.
Don't take his SOCY101 class, you'll regret it. Only four grades, which are four tests that consist of half the things he shares in class. Give you bad notes, bad lectures, and overall, boring.
Only 3 tests the whole semester, makes no sense and very confusing. His tests are so hard and confusing. DO NOT TAKE.
Only 4 tests and nothing else during the semester. Lectures are not well organized and he jumps from topics to topics in a random way. It was supposed to be a fun and enjoyable class bc it talks about societies at all levels, but it was far from enjoyment. Couldn't take that guy again.
Funny guy! I skipped half the class and ended up with an A. Read the book and you'll be more than fine. He tells you what chapters the test will be on the class before the test. Go to the study sessions. they are EXTREMELY helpful. Tests are fairly easy as long as you read. No grades other than 4 tests, final is optional. His lectures are awesome.
Don't skip classes!
He's a great guy and class is never boring. But in may be a little difficult for visual learners simply because he doesn't use PowerPoints, he opens a word doc and writes abbreviated words as an outline, so listen up!
This class was okay. I'm not a sociology major so maybe that was why it was uninteresting. He is a very funny professor but the lectures stray off topic. The tests are fairly easy if you pay attention. The TA review sessions are a huge help.
His tests include lots of questions that relate back to specific things he said in class, so if you miss a class and none of your friends took notes than good luck! Other than that he's pretty chill. The tests are kind of hard because he doesn't really go over everything in the textbook and he is off topic a lot. His voice can put you to sleep too
Professor Goodell doesn't really seem to have his class properly planned out. I do recommend him though. I took him last semester. There are 4 or 5 test throughout the semester. The final exam is optional. It can replace a previous test grade if it is higher. The tests are based off of his lectures so take good notes and make friends to share notes
Lectures are boring, his comments are less than amusing, and his tests are overly specific on really broad material. He will have questions about what you did in class a particular day, even though class is not mandatory. Study the book and you will pass, but not with flying colors.
What a great professor. To be honest, I completely bombed the first test thinking that this class was going to be an easy course for a pre-health student. After that, I had to read every word of every chapter. Different for me because sociology and the workings of society interests me. Read the material because it is interesting and you'll do well.
If you believe you know the material, you probably don't. I would study for hours and still managed to do poorly. This class is simple but time consuming. Would recommend this course, but be ready to DIE from sleep deprivation.
WORST TEACHER EVER. This was supposed to be the "easy" class but he's the worse Sociology 101 teacher. The only grades you get are the four exams that he gives. Make sure to go to the lectures for because half the material on there is only the stuff he says in class so have great memory. TA is not helpful AT ALL, she doesn't know what's going on
I had a very difficult time with this class I attended all lectures bc he states that the tests are from his lectures. However, there are no clear written lecture notes he just writes random stuff on the board and talks about it. Just difficult to follow in my opinion. My interpretation of the book was completely different from his so it was hard
The basis for his tests are from the lecture slides he presents in class, but I encourage you to go to the study sessions his TA holds prior to the exam. He's super funny and uses real-life examples of his own life for material to stick. Very helpful when it comes to office hours and understands when life is being thrown at you. Highly recommend
Even though his teaching style is unusual, you will get a lot out of the class if you're willing to listen and are able to pick out the important things. He's a funny guy and clearly loves sociology. If you pay attention to his lecture/outline and read in the textbook for clarification you will do fine!
This professor is something else. He'll discuss a chapter in the last 5 minutes of class and base half ur exam on it. He only has four exams which sucks even more. Do yourself a favor and do NOT take him. Sociology is suppose to be a fun class but his exams do not make it so fun
Loved this class and professor so much. He was funny and interactive and seemed to be passionate about what he was teaching (which is hard to find in a 101). Your grade is 4/5 tests and 1/5 "clicker" grades tallied throughout the year so you do need to show up. However, the info is pretty common sense, just pay attention and your golden.
Zack is a great professor. He really cares about sociology. That being said, all of the material he teaches is straight out of his head, there's no powerpoint or notes or anything, just an outline of the topic names that he'll cover per each unit. But if you just go to class, take notes, and answer tophat questions you'll pass this class.
Goodell was challenging, but fair. As long as you record his lectures and relisten to them to make sure you got everything down you should be fine even without the textbook. He's pretty boring and rants a lot, but you'll get what he's trying to say overall. Attendance is a must for those tophat questions. One good thing is that the exam is optional
Goodell is a fair professor and he keeps lectures entertaining. If you skip class a lot, don't come, as he uses Tophat as a way for participation points almost every class. I recommend buying the book especially b/c sometimes he will have you look up things in it if he doesn't get to it in class. Overall I recommend. Final is optional!
He clearly cares about Sociology, but as a result his lectures are him ranting off the top of his head with no structure.. Definitely read the book to fill in the blanks and pay attention to his lecture notes. Try to show up and listen as he uses TopHat (which is 1/5 of your grade) and his exams reference some of the specific things he says.
Zach is hands down the best professor I have ever had at VCU. Unlike so many 'educators' at this school, he is genuinely passionate about that he teaches which makes learning from him really fun and exciting. Sociology is such an important subject to study and I can honestly say this class made me a better person. Take him, you won't regret it.
Great lectures. Final exam is optional.
I loved Zack's class, hands down he's one of my favorite professors I've had at VCU. My only complaint is his notes can get a little confusing because he writes them up as he goes instead of using powerpoints. Anyway, I would definitely recommend.
Zack is a great professor. He does not post notes, you must either attend class, or read the book to get the information. Class is graded by 4 tests, each worth 20% of your grade, and 20% by Top Hat questions, which encourage you to go to class but do not make it mandatory. Zack has awesome corny humor, and reminds me of a typical dad. Easy, fun A.
I dropped this class because of the professor. I took sociology in high school and got an A without even trying. In the 101 class, we covered the same exact material but he presented it in a way that was WAY HARDER THAN IT HAD TO BE. It was way to much work for what it was worth.
He is a funny guy, but the class being only 4 tests and topcoat makes it hard to do well. Attendance isn't mandatory but you need a participation grade sooo it kind of is. (TOPHAT)
I totally recommend taking this professor. The people who do struggle in this class probably just don't attend all the lectures and take EXTENSIVE notes (which is a must if you want to do well on exams) or don't read (which is also kind of a must tbh). He's really funny and interesting, and its not hard if u try!
Goodell is such a great professor. He is willing to help you during his office hours and his lectures aren't really boring and he's super funny. He only has 5 grades, 4 test and classwork (tophat), and an optional final, so that means you should show up to class even though it isn't mandatory because his test are based off lectures not textbook.
You HAVE to take notes on lecture and the textbook is not REALLY required but I would advise to get it and read the chapter overviews before the tests, they really help. There are NO other grades than test grades so study hard for the tests or else.
DO NOT TAKE HIM.... Hes a good professor and is hilarious. You get the material easy. I got Bs on his exams and enjoyed class in general. But the final research paper, he really effed me up. All he said was it will be graded by its length, and told us the format. No rubric, no nothing to go off of!!? I wrote 20 PAGES. Got a B????????? Just DONT.
Enjoyable class, pay attention to lectures and its an easy A.
The class requires very little effort. Pretty much just show up and take notes, you wont have homework, just tests. The tests are all notes based so the textbook isnt necessary. He uses tophat as a grade so attendance is required.
Zack is one of the greatest people who work at vcu, his TA is useless, might as well be your own TA. His exams are 100% what comes out of his mouth. he's so funny and loving but i wish he had a more detailed outline. the class was big and it was hard to collaborate with people to make sure you have everything you need to get an A
Goodell is an excellent lecturer. Be ready to pay attention during class and actively take notes. Most of the test questions comes from his lectures, and he takes attendance through tophat participation in class. Reading the textbook is optional and a supplement to his lecture. The TA is useless so prepare on your own.
He comes across as a very egotistical man, believing that he knows more than everybody else. This is off-putting, but when he told the class about a man who dressed in blackface for a year in order to understand a black person's life, it was over for me. He joked about crossdressing to understand trans peoples' struggles. Not receptive to criticism
All of his tests are what comes out of his mouth and the only way you can get notes is by going to the class because he doesn't do powerpoint. He uses tophat and asks questions about the class before, so make sure that you go to every class. Tests are hard and there is tophat that is sporadically throughout the lecture. You basically teach yourself
Professor Goodell was a great Sociology Professor. He finds a way to make class interesting/fun/keeping you engaged. The whole class is graded off of three exams and in-class participation. As long as you go to class, you will do fine in this class. Everyone leaving negative reviews probably just didn't go to class.
I loved Dr. Goodell! He was funny, and literally all you have to do is show up to class and take notes. There's only tests, not any homework or quizzes (for 101 at least). People complaining about it being "too hard" just can't manage to show up to a 50 minute class a few times a week... If you want to do well, it's not hard. Also really funny!!
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He teaches off his lecture notes and doesn't do a good job. He just talks and then gets off topic. The way he teaches makes no sense. When he gets off topic he just rambles and rambles on and then before you know it you've gotten through half the lecture notes and its already the test. Don't take his class
If you listen to what he is saying he will often repeat what he wants you to write down at least twice as well as tell you what page you can find the information in the textbook. People say that his test are based off of what comes out of his mouth but honestly the questions come straight from the textbook if you make sure to read along.
If you are a person who learns better from clear and organized lectures, you will not love Dr. Zack. The weekly reflections he assigns are generally easy, but the tests are difficult and very theorist-focused, which is unlike most Socy classes at VCU. Overall, a class with Dr. Zack is a class where you will teach yourself from the textbook.
He is a good professor. He has a clear set of notes that he works off of but he can ramble. If I could give one piece of advice is to pay attention and go to class. Everything that is on the test comes straight out of his mouth so if you pay attention you'll do fine. There are also study sessions that his TA does which are super helpful.
He was a good teacher he just likes to go off on tangents a lot and when he does that can sometimes make you confused but he gives credit by doing things in TopHat which is a subscription you'll need for him you don't need the textbook at all but study good for the test if you pass his class after the unit test you wont have to take the final.
Makes the content interesting and engages with students. Tests are normal difficulty, I'm just a bad test taker. Solid teacher!
He gives the most entertaining and compelling lectures of any professor I've ever had, and he's hilarious- he talks like a stand-up comedian.
The only grades in this class are 4 test and top hat participation. final is optional if you are happy with your grade. if you arent a good test taker this class is not for you. you have to attend the lectures to pass the class. He goes off topic a lot during lectures which gets really annoying.
There are only 5 grades (4 tests and 1 participation grade), but the tests are fairly easy if you take good notes. His lectures are engaging, but he only uses the note outline for a visual, so you have to pay attention to get the information. Overall the class was pretty good.
LOVE HIM! Not sure why his score isnt higher - probably from people who dont pay attention or show up. He will often mention what will be on tests - take note of them. Pretty clear cut imo. Very interesting class and he is hilarious. Just go to class and do the readings assignments. May have to work a little harder but an A is very doable
Professor Goodell was a pretty standard professor for most of the semester.
Prof Zach's lectures are really entertaining and interesting. He refers to himself as "the textbook" because he truly knows everything about the subject. You have to attend lecture though because he does not present power points (and doesn't upload anything on canvas) and some questions to his tests come straight from what he says.
He refers to himself as the textbook, which is a red flag. Considering he rambles a lot and you have too heavily rely on your notes to pass. There really isn't a set curriculum he follows. He is however, funny and a reasonable grader. The class isn't difficult, attendance shouldn't be necessary but is thanks to the graded top-hat.
LOVE! If you love sociology, you'll love Dr. Goodell! I've had him for three courses now. He runs all of his classes similarly; No textbook required because he gives you all the material through interesting, fun lectures. Funny, smart, and engaging! Higher level courses, he relies heavily on readings. If you struggle, ASK him for help!!
Grade is based on 4 tests and attendance. All material is given in class through lectures, nothing is posted to canvas. lectures are very in depth and often engaging, test questions are in the same order as they are presented on the pre-made notes outline. also just a fun guy to learn from.
Professor Goodell brings the material to life through engaging lectures. Attend class, do the readings, and use Unstuck AI - an excellent study tool alongside the textbook. Manageable difficulty, worthwhile course.
This professor is absolutely terrible, makes the weirdest comments during his lectures and has no status of professionalism of a professor. Moral of the story just avoid him and thank me later
Vcu needs to do better with who they hire, just because you hold a bunch of degrees doesn't mean your a good professors. It's literally sociology class and he doesn't even make the students interact with each other and then his exams are so confusing and worth the whole grade
His class is not flexible at all his grade is based off exams only and doesn't allow students to actually have a learning experience
I am taking time out of my day to warn everyone just pick another professor. He doesn't even respond to emails
He's been a great professor, not a lot of work only weekly reflection papers and a bigger project at the end. He's super funny but can get off topic sometimes. Really chill about late work, and he's flexible about tests.
