Very good prof. Although he's new to teaching, he does a great job. Gets the content across in an efficient and easy-to-understand manner. He's very enthusiastic about it. He stays back after class to answer student questions. Good sense of humor. All around, I highly suggest this class with Zack. Midterms were tricky, but final was fair.
Class was hard and a lot of material to cover and understand as I was a Psychology student. He was very organized and explained things in an entertaining way. His enthusiasm to teach helps. He was willing to take the time to help me understand the material. Would take another class with him!
He's new to teaching but it didnt stop him from being organized and well knowledgeable about the course. He was very willing to stay after class and meet in his office to go over terms until I understood them. Would take another class with him for sure!
Awful. This is supposed to be a psyc/neuro class but his focus is entirely on the neurology side. He is very eager for feedback but only if it is praise. I found him condescending and rude. Worst prof I had in 3 years.
He's just simply amazing! His way of teaching really is organized, clear, and to the point!
just finished my degree of all the profs I had, he was the worst. Very little psyc content on exams and kept referring to students as aspiring neurologists. I don't know if he even knew it was a psyc course as well. Actually gave marks on test for telling him what you liked about his class. Really big on feedback but only if it is in his praise.
Young and charismatic! His class was tough but I actually learned a lot. He definitely focuses more towards neuroscience rather than psychology because that is his specialization.
So terrible!! Exams were all about neuro and no psyc content at all, so don't waste your time studying that half of the class. Lectures entirely taken from text. He is very open to feedback about how wonderful he is but if you are having a problem, best to drop it and take it with a better prof (I did and got an A-) Only class I have ever failed!
I thought Dr. Patterson was top 3 profs I had at Carleton. Very smart, very enthusiastic and clearly loves what he teaches. Lectures were interesting and usually filled with rants and stories unrelated to his lecture slides - but that's where I think I learnt the most about addiction! Tough midterm and assignment, but fair marker.
Zack is a very young, enthusiastic Prof who clearly enjoys teaching. He is always approachable, very quick to respond to email inquiries and will explain difficult concepts to you in a way you will understand. While his lectures often did diverge into conversations regarding material not on the slides, they allow for "real world" examples and info
Best prof at Carleton! I hope he comes back and teaches more courses. I would take one of his classes again. Covers a lot of material but keeps class engaged. Not an easy class but definitely do-able.
It's a tough class but he taught it well. If you attend lectures and put the work in, you can ace the class no problem. Tests were straight forward and fair, just gotta study!
Amazing prof. I have taken several psychology and neuroscience course. I have never seen a professor to passionate and engaged in the class material. It really make a difference, showing up to class and learning the material is pretty easy.
Awesome Prof at Carleton! He is clearly passionate about the material and wants students to succeed. Hard material but fair test. Study his lecture slides and you should be fine. 10/10 recommend taking any of his classes
Zach is an amazing prof! He really knows his stuff. He is also very receptive to student feedback and actively tries to change the course based on it. Highly recommend!! No need to buy the textbook.
A very passsioante prof, his lectures make material interesting and if a concept isn't understood, he'll go back and try to re-explain it in a way that makes it easier to understand. He's always open to feedback and does his best to help you. Test material is not easy, but his tests are very fair. 10/10 would recommend!
Midway im the semester, best decision to be in his class. Very professional and has great language skills making hard concepts seem easy
Good language skills and makes hard topics seem easy. Big yes
He is a good teacher. The material can be difficult but I don't mind because I love this topic of study. If you have no neuroscience knowledge it can be more challenging but I wouldn't know.
HES AWESOME!! Classes can be a bit difficult but he sets the powerpoints up PERFECTLY for success. Teaches only on the slides and is very passionate about what he teaches!
Absolutely amazing
Dr. Patterson is a great lecturer and seems genuinely interested in his students'success. No textbook needed - you are tested on the PPT slide content. Lots of testing in this course, with 2 midterms, 12 quizzes and 1 exam. But this splits up dense concepts into manageable pieces to study. I would take another course with him again!
Amazing! Great lectures and supper interesting.
He's a good prof. The course is interesting yet very heavy. You DO need to pay attention, attend class, study after class, ask questions, etc. If you need extra help, try OSMOSIS. I found that helped in explaining things, but you need to start early. You cannot cram. Almost an new subject every lecture. He's funny.
great prof! its very obvious that he loves what he's doing. he made sure that hard concepts were very well understood before moving on with the material. I'd love to have him as my prof again.
Really fun course. Dr. Patterson is extremely passionate about psychoactive drugs. Makes learning the course material fun and interesting. Tests directly from lecture slides but exams are hard.
By far my favourite professor at Carleton. I had him for 3 different NEUR courses. Such an intelligent guy and so passionate about what he teaches. Although the material is challenging, he makes them very easy to understand. Nothing but the utmost respect for him.
Honestly the best. He cares about his students, and if you get the chance to visit his office hours, DO IT. He is so personable and wants the best for you. The course is easily passed (A/A+) as long as you put the effort in. He likes to actually make sure you know the material, read questions carefully! Lectures are amazing, highly recommend!
Zach is by far my favourite professor. He's extremely passionate about Neuroscience. The course is pretty difficult but he makes it easy to understand. He is very caring and wants to help.
A really great prof. I loved his class. He made difficult content really clear and interesting. Only issue was explaining the basal ganglia loops. I suggest Khan Academy videos for that part haha. Looking forward to taking more classes with him!
Very charismatic and engaging during lectures, making it easy to pay attention. Leaves lots of room for questions to be asked, especially during the more difficult portions. Very helpful if you go to him for help, and easily approachable. Lots of extra info said during lectures, and test hints, making the lectures very important for a good grade.
Zach is one of the best professors I have had at Carleton. I took the first course he taught as a faculty member and I was blown away by his teaching ability. He is always available to help students outside of class, and wants you to succeed. Midterms are very very and he prepares you very well.
Learning a whole bunch of definitions and concepts can be super overwhelming but Professor Patterson makes everything super easy to understand. His lectures are very easy to follow and are super interesting! He explains things really well and answers any questions you may have. By far one of the best profs I've had at Carleton.
Zach is a great prof, the man loves to explain to make sure everyone understands and shows real love and enthusiasm when it comes to the brain and different studies. His lectures are very heavy like slides filled with info, but that's what he tests you on and only that so it's fair. His test are pretty hard, but as long as you study you'll be fine
He really cares about his students and definitely knows his stuff. He is passionate about the course material which makes lectures more interesting.
Would not recommend. Quiz date changed (advanced) without any notice. Be prepared to not know when things are due. Useless prof. He gives a robotic response, without any help when asked questions. Shows he doesn't care about his students. Prof reads off slides. During a midterm, a student raised her hand and he was on his phone making her wait.
The semester was cut short and we were stuck watching old lectures, but Prof Patterson was awesome. He tells a lot of stories to help learn the lecture material which I always found helpful. He goes above and beyond to answer all students' questions. One of my favourite profs yet.
Zack is the best! He is the smartest and most compassionate, interesting to listen to and really cares about the students. He's always tricky on exams, but he answers questions thoroughly and will always review it with you after to clarify things. He's a great teacher and is always excited about what he's teaching. Very clear and organized.
Zack has been an amazing prof this semester! He taught the class very clearly and made sure all of us were understanding everything he was teaching. He makes sure everyone was keeping up to date with their quizzes and helped anyone with questions they had about the course. I totally recommend taking this class!
Awesome Prof who cares about his students understanding the material. The lectures are very interesting and he explains things in a way you will understand. Study the slides and engage in his lectures, and you will do well in this class. Can't wait to take future courses with him!
All I can say is Zac is a king. To all future neuroscience majors, even people who want to minor in it or take this as an elective, you won't regret it. He is respectful, caring, and makes sure his students are aware of his deep passion for the field, and inspires them to follow suit by helping them build a solid foundation for future endeavours.
He has potential to become a great prof. He takes the feedback he gets from students and improves his teaching with it. Pay close attention and you should do fine.
Zack Patterson will answer questions with either (a) a good answer, (b) an honest don't know and point you in the right direction, or (c) asks students to answer either in class or as a future researcher. Material is made memorable with hilarious and relatable examples. He is fair and cares about his students. Gives quick replies.
Not a huge science student but he definetly helps to make the material understandable. You can tell that he truly cares about his students, and his tests aren't that hard if you study the material. He is really engaging and tries to make the lectures enjoyable, would love to take his class again, and 100% recommend!
Zach is a nice prof who is a great person to talk to for advise regarding your degree, but not going to lie this course was pretty difficult because he made it difficult. Teaching is great and content is cool but he was so picky with the quiz marking and would always want you to mention things he never talked about, and questions were tricky.
This course moved online and to a pre-recorded format due to COVID-19. Dr. Patterson not only made a challenging course interesting, but his presentations were also really engaging. I'm a non-science major and found the material really accessible. There is a quiz after EVERY lecture, one final exam, and an optional paper. Get ready to work!
as a non neuroscience student this is a hard summer course but if you keep up with the work and material you can do good. Dr. Patterson and his TA's were friendly and really want to see you succeed textbook helps and make sure you watch the lectures
Such an amazing prof! His lectures are filled with important information but it doesnt feel like memorization because he is so enthusiastic! My favourite prof so far!!
Would not recommend
Zack is a great prof. Hes super nice and genuine. Hes a laid back guy and prefers his student to be less formal with him. His lectures are thorough and he is also available during office hours if extra help is needed. Has a great and fun way of giving bonuses. Overall a great choice! You wont regret taking his class.
He is really knowledgeable on what he teaches. I have had him for a few other classes and although his classes are NOT easy I find them very interesting. You can tell that he really likes what he does. Due to COVID the class was held online and if I didn't understand something in his lectures and emailed him, he would reply back quickly!
One of the best professors I've had in the Neuroscience and Mental Health program. He knows his stuff, and his lectures are beyond interesting and engaging. He has really inspired me in the field of neuropharmacology. You will not be disappointed, however do not take the material lightly- you need good notes if you want a good grade.
Zack is one of my favorite profs. He has the best lectures and always makes learning fun, especially with the difficulty of the material. He makes understanding difficult topics so much easier and he always has a positive attitude during lectures. If Zack could teach all of my courses I wouldn't complain.
Zack is one of my all time favorite profs. He's caring and funny and really makes an effort for his students. I used to take down my favourite quotes from him, some of which were interesting, some were just funny, and the quote "you're all victims to MY interests" has been the title of my friend's groupchat for almost a year now. Truly a legend.
You can tell he's really passionate about the material, and even though it's an online setting the lectures were amazing. He was easily accessible to ask questions anytime and really cared for us. Tests were easy if you're well prepared, and there were lots of ways to gain extra credit. He left tests/exams open for a full week. An amazing prof.
This was a very difficult class, but it was made interesting with Zack. He is my favourite prof in this department that I've had thus far. He gives really interesting lectures and is great at what he does. I definitely recommend taking a class with him!
provides various opportunities to make up for your grade. very caring and genuinely wants his students to understand, will schedule a million office hours until you absolutely get it. Test and exams are directly taken from the lecture material, no surprises. very young and hip! would love to have another class with him.
Zach is probably one of my favourite profs in the department. He is passionate about the subject and makes you feel the same way. His tests are tricky. He's not trying to give you an easy grade. Show up to class and listen carefully to what he emphasizes and you will be fine. A funny guy too who's easily approachable.
A million little assignments designed by a bunch of kids (he said his TAs last year "created" them), so get ready to make two podcasts, design a infographic (learn photoshop), and make a TIKTOK for your grade. I would strong recommend anyone over the age of 18 NOT TO TAKE THIS. This class is awful for mature students. Unhelpful assignments.
Professor Patterson is amazing and Neuropharm was a really interesting course. I took this course because I needed credits outside of biology and the material was easy to understand! The course content is really fascinating, but there is a lot of memorization; its not necessarily an easy A. Put in the work, and youll be fine!
I'm pretty torn with ZP. As a person he is very nice and he truly cares for his students. But at the same time his teaching practices were a bit discouraging (ex: deleting his course videos after 2 weeks and not letting students go back and forth between quiz questions). Getting him to change things in his course is VERY difficult as well.
Dr. Zack is one of my favourite profs at Carleton. He listens to student feedback and will go out of his way to help students. Highly recommend.
He really cares if you end his course sane, and has assignments and quizzes on a "best 3/4" and "best 2/3" scale. This system allows wiggle room for your own mental health. Super engaging lectures, and he is always excited to help you learn whenever you have a question for him. Can't recommend him enough.
Zack is a really strong lecturer! He can make a complex topic really engaging and includes cool tidbits that help the material stick. I hope this doesnt get flagged, but he is very easy on the eyes too!
Neur2201 - hard but fair! Like all first and second year neuro profs the exams are multiple choice and based on lecture content - don't worry about dr. Patterson sneaking in a bunch of content he doesn't cover in the lectures like you have to in bio. Take good notes and review well and you'll do great!
I am so happy I took this course! This was an elective for me and I was a little intimidated at the beginning. However, Dr. Patterson was a great teacher and his explanations were memorable. Most of the assignments were also helpful in helping me to learn the content. Quizzes had no trick questions but it was helpful to review before writing them.
Dr. Patterson is one of the few professors that is not only passionate about his field, but also has the charisma and skills to teach. All the evaluations (including the exam) are very straight forward and easy. He is accessible for questions or even a quick chat. He actively wants to get better and asks for student feedback often.
Easily one of my favourite profs at Carleton. He has a way of making difficult information very easy, he's hilarious and he makes you want to come to class and learn about neuro. I would take any class that he teaches. No textbook, 5 very easy quizzes, some assignments and bonuses that are easy grades. Show up to his lectures and you'll do great.
What a king! I recommend this prof to anyone. This class is extremely fair and interesting. He's such a kind person and hilarious. Oh how I miss this class...
Funny. Pretty clear about what he thinks is important (and what will be on the tests). Will work with you again and again until you get it. Bonus marks based on social media assignments which weren't my favourite. Responded quickly to email queries. 4 quizzes, 5 assignments (grades on best 4 marks), final exam.
While he is lecture heavy, he makes his lectures fun and easy to follow along with. He is always making jokes and is a very cool professor. Would take all his classes if I could.
This class was great. If you took NEUR1202, this class shouldn't be too difficult, if you didn't, pay attention in class & ask questions & you'll be fine. Zack was a super engaging prof, he answers all your questions & encourages you to ask them. Def visit office hours, he's a cool guy. Assignments were best 3/4, two midterms & had easy bonus marks
My favourite prof ever. I don't think any prof will ever top him. I'm doing a minor in neuro because of him. He is super helpful. For example, I asked a question about something that was not even about the course content and he sent back paragraphs in response.
Took him the semester before but forgot to rate him lol. He's a great professor and his classes are engaging. I've had him previously which is why I took this course earlier than I needed too. His zoom discussions were really interesting. Would definitely take him again!
He's very nice and engaging. I thought the course was difficult because I'm not great at science but from what I did understand it was a good course. There was a good balance between exams, assignments, and bonus assignments.
Best prof ever. He is lecture-heavy but he makes it engaging and fun. Literally had a good laugh every lecture. He is very clear on what is important to know. All assessments are clear and fair. He responds very quickly to emails. So caring, he literally dropped some lectures because a lot of students were having a hard time keeping up. Love him!
Prof Patterson is an excellent professor! He knows his stuff and makes the content very interesting. His midterms and exams are fair if you study for them. Put in the work and time for this course, and you'll be fine.
Dr Patterson is great with explaining complex topics. Loved the content of this course but I bombed one of my assignments which affected my grade although I did pretty good on the tests so I did okay on the course. He is very strict with timing and won't accept any late assignments at all, but he does drop the lowest mark which is good.
Took this during covid when it was online and had a fantastic experience. Zach is a great professor and highly respected by Carleton students. Looking forward to hopefully taking other classes with him in the future. Tests, quizzes, and assignments were graded very fairly. He makes sure you understand important concepts. Recommend!
Took his neuroscience course with absolutely 0 background in science and finished with a 97%. I absolutely loved him and thought that his lectures were easy to understand and interesting. He was super flexible when it came to grading and gave options of getting bonus mark, getting your lowest assignment mark dropped, and the option of no final exam
Zack is most definitely the best professor there is at Carleton, he is so caring to students and understands the brain and different topics very well. So educated and honestly makes you want to keep pursing neuroscience. His class was a delight and I hope to have him again very soon!
Excellent prof. Very fair in marking and expectations. He represents what a prof should be in my opinion. I've done extra reading for him and he's entertained all of my silly questions without any judgement outside of class discussions. Great guy. Can explain complex ideas very well. I hope to take one of his 3rd year classes!
Amazing professor, will go out of his way to help students understand and do better in the course. Class was super interesting and he taught complex topics in a very understandable manner. Super approachable and really caring guy. I hope to take more of his classes!
Will mention things in passing that will then be tested on, and his tests are super tricky. He seems a bit arrogant and honestly i don't get why so many students like him but it's pretty privilege i'm guessing because he's honestly a mediocre prof
Several students have complained about his tests being tricky, but of course just like any other prof he thinks the average is a good representative of the class. He rambles on during lectures, his tests are very tricky, and he acts like he cares about students but is not compassionate with grading. Don't even get me started on the labs.
Zack is a great prof and the class is very interesting! He doesn't make it easy for you, but he is super flexible with office hours and emails and is willing to help you in anyway possible. He takes the time to get to know his students and genuinely cares. This class is very content heavy, and lots of memorization, but very interesting overall
Zack is a great prof! He is very caring and wants to help in any way that he can. His lectures are interesting and he is very good about answering questions and explaining things in multiple ways. It is a hard class and there is lots of memorization involved but it is worth it! Just beware of his frequent (but interesting) tangents.
Very calm and engaging style of teaching. He is clear on what he wants us to know for the exams. Nothing is tricky. The assignments given were easy, fun, and helped strengthen are understanding in the subject. He is very caring and accessible outside of class. Amazing professor, I strongly recommend him!
highly recommend this professor, he is fantastic and you wont be dissapointed
Great prof!!! Took this course in 2022 online, he was available for zoom calls if you wanted one on one meetings to go over content. He's one of my favourite professors at Carleton. He's easy to talk to and ask questions/guidance. The lectures are a lot of info but he makes them interesting.
Stunning organization of slides, lectures and really the whole course! Go to his office hours, he's generous and down to earth. If you attend the lectures and pay attention you will do well!
Honestly, all I have to say is 10/10. Best professor I've ever had. He explains things clear as day, his assignments were easy and he isn't a harsh grader. I also strongly recommend going to his office hours if you have a hard time with a concept, he's super nice and patient when explaining.
One of the best Neuro professors at Carleton hands-down. Concepts were easy to understand, his explanations were clear and his tests were super easy if you studied properly. Plus he's a cutie.
One of the best, if not the best professors at Carleton
Lectures are very engaging and he clearly cares about his students and his class. The course is set up for students to succeed, assignments solidify knowledge to make studying easy and focus on important concepts for tests. Topics are easy to understand and explained very clearly, and evaluations are fair if you study and know the concepts.
he really wants you to pass his course, so he's always willing to help you, if it's after class questions or his office hours, and even emails. he's just great, i respect him so much
He's really helpful with explaining things during office hours!!!
One of the best Neuro profs at Carleton. Engaging lectures, fair evaluations. unstuck AI was a huge help for study prep. Definitely take this class if you can.
I have yet found another professor who is as good at teaching then Zack. The lectures were 10/10 (took this course winter 2024), the tests were incredibly straightforward and he's always willing to help if you're confused with anything. If I could take all my classes would Zack, life would be great. Can't wait for him to come back !!
Great Professor, chill guy and explains things well.
It's genuinely hard to put into words how amazing of a professor he truly is. His lectures are very easy to follow, he drills the important stuff in a way that you can't forget. Everytime he's my prof, it's a blessing. He works with us to improve our learning/his teaching + takes feedback seriously. Exams are easy (if you attend lecs/pay attention)
Probably the best professor I've had thus far at Carleton. Lectures are awesome and he's extremely clear about what you need to know/what you don't. Even when he goes on random tangents, they're interesting and usually teach you something new. Replies quick to emails, clear grading criteria. Take anything with him, he's awesome.
Zach is my favourite prof I've had at Carleton. Before I even stepped foot into his class, I'd heard excellent things about him. Immediately you can tell he loves his subject, and cares deeply about students and their wellbeing. Easy to listen to, great and thorough explanations, and all around a very kind man. 20/10, I'd take any course with him.
Great prof, explains things clear and wants his students to succeed.
