Mr Small is a great teacher. I had him for an ENC1101 hybrid coarse that was 3 1/2 hours long, and not once did it get boring. He is very clear in explaining writting assignments and what he expects out of you. Class participation and discussions are a must. I would take him again... fo sho!
Mr. Small is an excellent teacher. He loves what he does and his class is very exiting due to the subject matter he chooses to discuss. He is very clear on what he expects from his students and is more than willing to help with any problems you might have. This guy is the bees knees.
Mr.Small may come off as strict and tedious but he just tries to be very clear about what he expects right in the beginning.I suggest doing the readings and if you need the help use the handbook. There is class discussions so be prepared. Send him your papers for extra critique. Cool dude with lots of funny videos to share with the class.go for it.
Be prepared, He gives ALOT of work. The class is very demanding but he is clear about expectations. Just know if you take this class you are going to be put to work.
Really cool dude but if you do not keep up with the readings, blogs, discussions your grade will suffer. He also is very very strict on attendance a few people dropped solely on that reason. I think he drops a good amount of points per DAY after a 4 day grace period.
classes are always interesting.. . he is well-informed on a variety of topics that go well beyond academia. very lively discussions - readings and overall preparation for class is a must.
Great Professor! He isn't the easiest Professor, nor is he the hardest, but you will enjoy his class if you actually care about school. There are always interesting discussions and he is passionate about what he teaches, which makes the class much more interesting. Just take the class, you definitely won't be disappointed.
Took this course online, guidelines are given and he is very straightforward with expectations however i feel it was too much material and too hard to keep up with, i would have rather took this course on campus perhaps i would have done better. I don't anticipate a good grade, i feel there should be some lead-way with online classes.
TOO MUCH WORK! I know this is a 6000 word class but we went well over the limit. He is very clear with instructions and a nice guy. He is helpful and lenient about deadlines but this class was more work than any class I have taken. He expects a lot out of your writing as well. Make sure you put some effort behind your work or your grade will suffer
Take him in person. He is incredibly generous with his time and knowledge. If you ask for help and guidance, he will go out of his way to assist you. His lectures and discussion are always interesting. Participate and read material before class and you will do great.
Prepare to read alot about slavery, the treatment of slaves and their origin. Every assignment has some type of reading about the struggles of slavery. You will definitely learn to create a well written essay.
He is a very knowledgeable teacher who will do his best to help you if you ask. I took his class online but feel like I would have been much better off taking it on campus. Coursework is heavy with multiple due dates every week. It's a little much to keep up with for an online class. He is pretty lenient with late work though.
Don't take him over the summer. First day of class he said ppl would have trouble if they were taking any other classes other then his, wasn't joking. Ton of work, showed up late (15 minutes each time) expect for twice. Nice guy and you will learn how to analyze a story, but he should realize that some students take a full schedule over the summer.
I love this teacher he is AMAZING. Stop hating.
TOOK HIS ONLINE COURSE! LOVED IT!! SUPER UNDERSTANDING AND LENIENT! VERY HELPFUL!! I HIGHLY SUGGEST HIM. LOTS OF WRITING, THOUGH.
Professor Small is infatuated by the struggles of race, which can be a bit irritating to some. I personally enjoyed what he had to say, even though it had nothing to do with the class most of the time. As for Mr. Small himself, he's half Jamaican and half Indian. He's very insightful and his class is not difficult.
This professor is not a good professor because he is not straight forward with students grade. You only know your grade at the end of semester. Because students keep asking their grades, he will said them see him privately. When I write my paper, I am suposed to know how I am doing and to know which areas i am not doing good there.Stop generalisng
Mr. Zahir really does give you a reality check about college life. most people come to class and hope with the expectation that their work will be easy breezy. Now i didn't do all my assignments like i was suppose to but i can vouch for him and say that he is an awesome teacher and he had us entertained in his 1 o'clock class MWF
Very worldly teacher... challenges his students to critical analyse what they are reading (not just in the class). Do not take this class if you are lazy, not willing to attend and participate in class, or if you are looking for an easy A. I highly recommend taking this class- you will walk out with more than improved writing skills!
Mr. Small is a very good teacher. He has taught me a lot lately. His work is not too difficult. We have very interesting discussions. Especially today. I love taking his class. I would recommend his class to anyone.
To much work for a summer class. You want know how you are doing until you get the final grade. Will not chose again.
He is an awesome teacher! You will actually learn, if you choose to. He is really hard, but homework isn't really a big issue with him but I recommend doing it. Listen to what his critiques are and learn from them, also you'll enjoy his videos and his lectures. He's also really helpful!
I took Small for ENC1102. At first the class seemed difficult, but after a few classes and talking with the teacher in class as well as going over drafts with him made this class easier. Follow his directions for the papers exactly as he says (this seemed to be an issue for a lot of students). He's a great teacher. I highly recommend him.
This class is pretty straight forward and if you do what is asked of you, you will receive a good grade. However, he does assign a lot of work, so if you're not willing to do it, take someone else.
I took the Honors class. He gives way to much work, but to be fair negotiates deadlines. His class is not for the creative thinker you will be very limited and feel repressed. Often contradicts himself. Plan on going to his office hours for help on major essays. Almost the same topic on ALL assignments.Course is about "literal" analyzing of text.
Professor small was an awful professor. Throughout the semester he become less and less clear on instructions. He is very arrogant and more interested in watching videos than doing anything related to his assignments. Would not recommend him, take anyone else just not him
I took this class online, and it was one of the easiest. Theres plenty of work to do, but not all of it is too demanding. Weekly discussions are not worth much, but points will acuumulate over time. He helps you to analyze good literary works, and brings interesting discussions.Put in a little effort, and you'll get a good grade.
Professor Small is a very helpful and knowledgeable instructor. He is always willing to help and will set appointments to go over material way before the due dates. He comes highly recommended!
Professor Small was nothing if not arrogant in his teaching. He likes to use terms such as "willful disregard of instructions," when referring to assignments which students didn't fully understand, rather than going back and possibly clarifying. His class is useless to attend, but needed for the grade. More busy work than meaningful assignments.
Professor Small is really the ideal English Professor. I am a science major and usually dread all things literature, but he was actually my favorite teacher of the semester and I looked to take him for my next English class. He gives a lot of work, but it is on interesting topics. Take him!
Professor Small is a fairly good teacher. But. He waits to grade for weeks, he suffers a massive amount of burnout like the students do from the massive amounts of work he gives, and he isn't helpful with explaining assignments if you don't get them. Though he is 'gentle' grader and gives extra time if you're bogged down by other classes.
Interjects his own opinion into everything. The assignments are difficult and time consuming, but they have nothing to do with the course. He is rude, arrogant, and most definitely has a nopolean complex.
There is a lot of assignments (which is normal for online courses). He can be a confusing grader but if you ask he will answer your questions. There is a lot of essays and discussion posts. You can get a good grade but you MUST work for it.
Prepare yourself because he is a ranter! Helpful, but do not speak about things he doesn't like, (i.e. anything about racism).
Worst professor I've ever had. Save yourself the agony and take anyone except him. A lot of busy work with very little clarity on how he wanted the assignments to be. Arrogant in every subject he spoke about. You won't know your grade until the very end. Your opinion does not matter, no matter the subject being discussed.
I took professor Small online for the spring semester and a lot of assignments are pretty clear and easy but are time consuming. I respect that he was lenient with due dates but I didn't like how critical he was with work and how harsh he graded. I do believe I became a better writer but I really had to work in this class to get a decent grade.
He's very rude and makes you feel stupid for asking a question. You need your book everyday or you won't get credit. If you're late for class you might as well not even go, you won't be marked present if you're late. There are assignments due every 2 days and the essays are VERY long. I will not be taking a class if he is the professor.
Online course. Very harsh and critical professor. When asking for help, he often belittles your ideas and has an arrogant demeanor. He takes forever to grade and gives very little feedback and no positive feedback. His instructions are often vague and sometimes contradictory. This class requires a lot of hard work. Avoid controversial topics.
Small does assign a lot of work, but it doesn't tak that long. Most essays are around 800 words, and the directions are clear cut. He even gives suggestions on what to write and articles to use. If you can follow directions, and know when to ask for help, you'll hardly have an issue with his online class.
He is a very rude professor. His assignments are extremely long, not only are they long but he assigns a ridiculous amount of unnecessary work. I do NOT recommend taking his class. Worst professor I've encountered..
Very good professor. Hes interested in making you a more educated person. He does assign a lot of work, but it helps you become a better writer. The rude demeanor people are referring to isn't true. For a college professor, hes very polite and patient. Give good feedback on essays.
When taking the hybrid ENC1101 course, you will receive A LOT of homework and assignments. That should kind of be expected though since it is a hybrid course. Also since the class only meets on Tuesdays, if you miss like three classes you will not pass. Be conscious of the due dates, don't be lazy, and you will have an A.
You will read a lot of really cool stories and he never gives unexpected assignments. Everything will be from what you were assigned. Only downfall is he can be pretty condescending at times.
Was very hard and back to back work. I've never had a class so hard and fast pace. I would say the hard work was good but it didn't give me a chance to improve because there was a paper due every other day. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you can completely dedicate yourself to it
DO NOT TAKE! He gives at least three assignments a week and this is a full term class, you have to take a fine toothed comb to every assignment. I wouldn't say he has a teaching style considering all he gives is busy work. He lets your writing errors go on until the end and then gives out bad grades, when he should have corrected them sooner.
This class was HORRIBLE! Do not take this class if you do not like writing, or reading in depth. Most assignments are close together, and span between 3-4 per week. Each one will be longer then 3 paragraphs, and if your sensitive to topics this is not a class to take. Along with this, it took two weeks to get back grades!
Do not take this class if you are looking for an easy online class. You will learn and you will also write...a lot. If you are looking for an English class that will challenge you Professor Small is for you, other wise keep looking.
Worst professor ever and very disrespectful and also very arrogant. Gives a lot of work and pushes his opinions on you. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Very easygoing and fun to have as a teacher. The class is easy as long as you make the effort to do the work. He doesn't grade harshly at all and is willing to discuss anything as long as you can show evidence. Overall a strong teacher who can relate to his students and a class you can have fun in.
Very good teacher, he made class fun, but if you have a busy schedule like me, i don't recommend. Lots of homework due after another.
Not only is Professor Small good as a teacher, he communicates the fact that he cares very well while being relevant. He encourages classroom discussion and participation. His classes are hybrid meaning homework is turned in online while you participate on campus. He will push you to be a better writer, critical thinker and to develop your thoughts
If you're looking to enjoy a class in literature, this isn't it. Most of the work assigned has nothing to do with literature. Most of the work is about racial issues, ethnicity, slavery, etc etc. Things that should be in a history class, not literature. He does grade very fair, allows late work. The work is easy, I just didn't agree with the topics
Prof Small was pretty awesome. He is very straight forward and is clear not only with his lectures, but also his grading guidelines. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, but make sure you do the homework. Following the assignments and rubrics will make this class very simple. Stay focused and you will do just fine!
Good professor, just assigns a lot of work. When I enrolled in his class, I was also taking two math classes. Between those three courses, I was overwhelmed to the point of having to withdraw from this course.
I took this class online for a mini term along with 2 other classes. It's manageable but it is definitely challenging. You have a small assignment every other day which is writing about a paragraph or two (Topics are interesting so it's easy) You do have to work for your grade so if you have 2 easy classes, this is a good addition to them.
Great class. She is super accessible and willing to work with you if you just ask. Would definitely take her for another class if I ever need to.
TOO MUCH WORK IN SUCH LITTLE TIME. Does accept late work which is sort of helpful. The feedback is crappy as he is very arrogant, and sarcastic. This class is the toughest class I've taken, and it's all because of the unnecessary overload amount of work given.
I wouldnt recommend this Professor at all TOO MUCH WORK! YOU WON'T PASS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CLASS THIS CLASS IS DEMANDING, Professor claims to help but doesn't waits until the end of semester then you fail. Doesn't try to give you any feedback DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. LOOK FOR ANOTHER PROFESSOR HE WON'T BE A GOOD ONE!
Awful. Assignments are unclear and so are some of his requirements. Does not give feedback that is helpful. He will tell you something is wrong and will not tell you how to fix it. ALL busy work. I will NEVER recommend this professor to a fellow student.
Took this class in a Summer A term and it was annoying the amount of daily work we had to do. He gives really good feedback and is very accessible to contact. Definitely makes you work for it. Make sure to do every assignment.
Professor Small expects good work from you. He's pretty chill with late assignments but overall a tough grader. But it was worth it in the end because I knew exactly what he's looking for in essays. The way he teaches makes english so fun and though there are a lot of papers, their super fun topics! I'm definitely going taking his ENC1102!
At first I was very concerned that I was not going to do well in the class. Mr. Small is very clear on what is expected from students and easily accessible with great feedback. His feedback is based directly from your work and he really cares about the individual student. Love him as an instructor! Wish he taught more intensive writing courses.
Professor Small is a thought provoking instructor, with a great knowledge of writing, who really helps his students. I took the online half semester course. He gave almost daily assignments. I would not recommend taking his online course if you don't truly enjoy reading and writing; a traditional classroom experience would be better for you.
I took this class online. Professor was not clear at all on the grading criteria. Too many papers!! Rude too.
Professor Small is clear in what he wants from you, and while there are several papers to write, there are no exams. He always responded to my emails and graded papers quickly. I really enjoyed taking this class!
I took this class online for a half term This class was honestly so fast paced it was hard to keep up He is very clear with instructions but has daily homework assignments require more than just a couple of hours of your time He gives good feedback the amount of work he provides is ridiculous Avoid this online class Unless you don't have a choice
You have 4 major essays, each one practically doubling the scores of the last. 25,50,100 and 180. The final research project is 200. Each week there are 5 pt discussion topics that are super easy and take around ten minutes. He also grades peer reviews which are an easy A. As long as you turn stuff in and follow MLA and his guideline you can't fail
Small was super chill and very understanding. Every class is fun and Ive learned so much from him. He got me to understand and appreciate Literature just as I should have in this course. I would definitely take one of his classes again if I get the chance!!
Great professor and really wants to help you. Sure, there are a couple papers to write but he will guide you and and give you AMAZING feedback. You just have to do your part and reach out.
Mr. Small is a great professor! He is very understanding and willing to help you as long as you do your part. He gives great feedback and I would definitely recommend him if you are a person who likes feedback given to you straight forward and no sugar coating.
I took Professor Small's online, express course, and really underestimated the work load. Something due almost every day, some lengthy, some not, but he's extremely understanding about late assignment if you communicate with him beforehand. Do NOT take advantage though, I may have turned it in late, but I put maximum effort into it all.
Literature has always been my best subject. However, this ended up being my least favorite class. Personally I found this professor way too self righteous and annoying, and the course material focused A LOT on racism and related social issues- wouldn't mind this but it wasn't the class I signed up for. LOTS of work too. Wouldn't reccomend.
This is the best teacher I have come across at SF! He is super funny and nice, although he gets serious when it's time to work. You'll read every class. He also puts funny videos for you to unwind. He is very blunt and some might perceive that as rude. He is very specific in his grading guidelines and a somewhat tough grader.
Understanding, funny, and very kind. Overall a great teacher. 10/10 WOULD RECOMEND.
Great Professor, doesn't put up with nonsense.
Professor Small gave us TONS of work that in my opinion were unnecessary. We never read anything really diverse when it came to literature. We only read stories that focused on slavery, racism, Jamaican authors etc. He tends to joke a lot about white people which can set off a few kids. Lastly he tends to bang heads with kids who are republican.
Professor Small is great. Makes it clear what you need to do to succeed.
I loved this class
This was one of my favorite classes this semester, so much I am taking her again for ENC1102. I took my class online, and she was so caring. She was very easy to reach as well and willing to help any way she could. There is lots of work, reading, papers, and dicussions, but as long as you follow the instructions and read the prompts it's an easy A.
Professor Small seems intimidating when you first meet him but he's actually really chill and will help you with whatever you need. If you do your work you will get an A easily.
Professor Small made LIT1000 my favorite class. He assigns a lot of homework. While it was a lot, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the assignments. He is very opinionated, but he is open to hearing your thoughts on almost anything. He is an amazing professor, but I wouldn't recommend his class if you aren't willing to work for the grade you want.
Our class was all about music. This made the class seem almost redundant. He cares about his students and keeps up with current events. Often showed videos that did not have much relevance. The class was like a routine. Read from the textbook, present, write essay, and then the cycle again. Not difficult and often interesting.
Great Teacher, He tells you exactly what you need to do to pass his class. There is a lot of reading, and videos to watch for the class, however, I did not do 80% of them and still finished the class with a 98%. I see some comments about his bias and I did not see any. I liked the professor so much I enrolled in his ENC1102 class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU NEED IT FOR YOUR MAJOR. Professor Small assigns at least 4 to 5 stories twice a week that are about 20 pages each. It is very easy to fall behind, as many working students simply do not have the time to retain and analyze such unmemorable and obnoxiously long pieces of literature. He is nice but I wish I dropped.
Professor Small was a great teacher. I emailed him a lot and got very prompt and specific replies. There is a few assignments due each week but if you start them early you will finish on time. He does a lot to help you prepare for the essays and gives very detailed instructions to ensure you pass. I would recommend him to everyone.
Professor Small is awesome! There is a lot of assignments that can be seen as busy work but he just has it to prepare you for the essay. Showing up to his class is half the battle. He is great at connecting things to popular and current topics that make the class interesting. After taking 1101 online, Prof. Small made 1102 much easier.
Professor Small is a funny, caring professor. Although I have never met him in person, I would definitely take one of his classes again if needed. There is a lot of reading/writing but that is to be expected in an English class. He responds to e-mails promptly and gives honest, appreciable feedback on assignments.
Great teacher, I have no clue why he has a low rating on here. I have taken him online for the last 2 semesters now and do not regret it at all. His class has a lot to read but he doesn't expect you to go through it all. If you follow the comments he leaves when grading your work then its next to impossible to not get an A.
tough grader, unclear requirements for papers.
The literature section at the beginning is the hardest part. Some students got scared off, but it got way easier once we reached the poetry. As long as you put some effort and thought into an assignment you're guaranteed to get full credit. I appreciated the effort he put into teaching and would recommend him as long as you like reading.
Super relatable and uses some different material that most of the college demographic would find funny. Good Insight My only downside was that the classes were sometimes boring being that we read a lot of articles. It felt like we were back in high school going around the room and each student reading a paragraph. He also doesn't allow computers??
He gives A LOT of homework but if you do them then you will have a easy A.
Professor Small is an amazing teacher. He goes above and beyond when it comes to supplementing his modules with cool articles and neat hyperlinked media. He really cares about the information he's presenting to his class. There are quite a few online articles that you need to read for each module but they are always thought provoking and neat.
Before this class, I hated and would always dread writing. But, Prof. Small made me excited to write. The material he chooses is always interesting and writing assignments are always engaging. I got an A on all of my papers but it is because I took my time to do them and really planned it out. Work hard and you'll pass! also, he's hilarious.
Professor Small puts a tremendous amount of effort into this course. I found a lot of the material interesting. He takes the time to respond to each assignment you turn in. This class is an easy A if you apply yourself and do the assignments to the best of your ability. He gives a lot of credit to attempts. No papers.
He gives a lot of homework, but doesn't grade hard if you put in effort. I literally had a 100% in the class until I got lazy. He is more than fair, two assignments were late and he didn't take off points. Has us read/discuss a large range of literature, some awesom. Overall, very nice, all he expects is you put in effort and you should earn an A.
The most understanding and caring professor i've ever had.
This professor cares and wants you to pass. He also seeks affirmation in people participating, so try to contribute in discussions! That being said, if you actually put in effort he will notice and tell you how well you did, especially online. Class sometimes feels long cause he tries to extend it with rambling and unnecessary videos.
An amazing instructor. He genuinely care about your success in the course while bringing interesting material for assignments. Very easy to contact, in order to pass you have to be present, but if you follow the course work there should be no problem. I truly walked away w/ needed skills from this course. Free rein on assignment encouraged.
Professor Small is amazing. He really cares about his job and tries to make his lessons entertaining. However, he can tell if you slack off so you have to devote time and effort into your work. I felt like I learned a lot from this professor and I would totally take him again. He is always welcoming when it comes to asking questions.
A pretty solid choice for an English professor. He has a pretty weird sense of humor but I thought he was funny. He likes to choose weird topics for his students to write about. It's a lot of small assignments and a couple of bigger projects, but if you do your work you'll be fine. The textbook helps with the class but not completely necessary.
Professor Zahir Small is by far the best professor I've ever had. He incorporates interesting strategies that make learning fun, and he sincerely wants his students to do well and succeed. This course requires a lot of reading and writing, but as long as you listen to the feedback, you will do well and significantly improve your writing skills.
Prof Small is hilarious and the way he teaches this class makes you want to learn. He keeps it interesting, never a dull moment. He explains every assignment in-depth, which makes it easier to complete. If you at least try, you'll succeed. It shows that he's well knowledgeable of the subject of English. I learned a lot and look forward to ENC1102!
If you have any issues with fast paced TEACHING, excessive reading and writing, on top of juggling life and work, DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE ONLINE! The online course is not ideal for students like me. It requires hours and hours of your time. Sidenote: Please, start this course on the day it starts. If you don't, it will be difficult to catch up.
Prof. Small is the most understanding and caring professor I have ever had. I took him for both ENC1101 and 1102. He takes the time to read and comment on every assignment that is submitted, provides helpful feedback and encouraging words. He provides interesting writing prompts that are different from usual/boring essays. I highly recommend him!
At the beginning, professor Small seemed really chill. It wasn't until after the first paper that things started to go downhill. It's an introductory course and it was way harder than it should have been. He doesn't give good feedback when grading so I didn't know what I was doing wrong. I ended the course with a good grade but still.
Honestly I didn't give my all in the class and ended up missing a few assignments, which explains my grade. Putting that aside Professor small is a great teacher who will give you detailed feedback and gives you many good sources to become a better writer. The discussions are actually pretty fun and easy, I'd definitely recommend choosing him.
Professor Small is incredible!! He puts a TON of effort into online coursework and gives prompt, helpful feedback. His selection of literature is diverse and interesting, from Faulkner to contemporary poets. I'm looking forward to taking ENC1102 with him next semester.
READ THE MATERIAL. He really wants you to become a better, more informed writer but you have to work for it. If you don't understand the assignments, he will help. I enjoyed writing some of the papers when I could choose my topics and resources. He's also pretty funny and includes lots of YouTube links and memes. Really great guy.
Professor Small was a great teacher for ENC1101. The papers may look hard, but Small gives more precise feedback and comments on assignments, which helped a lot in the long run. I didnt have any problems in his class, and Im glad I took his class as it helped me do better in writing essays. I recommend him if youre going into 1101.
Professor Small is great! He really just wants you to apply yourself. This is a literature class so be prepared for lots of reading! Assignments/discussions aren't difficult if you read material and followed directions. No exams in the class and no essays. You will pass with an A if you simply put effort into the assignments. Loved this class!
Professor Small is a great teacher and I learned a lot this semester. This class is a lot of work so expect to be doing assignments all the time. There is a lot of reading along with the assignments, so if you do not like to read do not take this class.
Professor Small is a good teacher. Her class is super easy, but she is just a tough grader. However your grade can rise quickly if you don't do so good on a paper. I totally recommend.
I think this is one of my favorite professors I have ever had. He is extremely caring and understanding. His requirements for essays are unbelievably clear. You do have to put the effort in though and truly try.
Professor Small is a decent prof. but the readings he assigns are often unnecessarily graphic. It can be very uncomfortable. You won't read classics in his class. Overall the literature is very social justice-themed so if you like that this will be good, if you do not, RUN.
He was great, very straight forward in what he wants and very patient.
It's a decent class. It is something I would definitely avoid unless its the only option. Class is not fun or flexible. Strict teacher who has high expectations and little constructive feedback to help you improve personally. Will send you to Schools online resources if you want to improve.
He is a great prof honestly. I just didnt do the work all of the time.
I really did enjoy this class. I would recommend this professor due to his care for the subject and how much he appreciated his students work, this professor was also very willing to reply to certain comments which I found very intriguing.
He was great at teaching but a bit too political for my taste. He also doe not accept any late work so you need to make sure to stay on top of work.
Professor Small's class was challenging but nothing too crazy. Unfortunately some days I felt like class was not with going too as it would be spent just taking about a controversial current event (such as Covid or celebrity drama) other days however it was imperative to go to class in order to understand the upcoming assignment. Lots of grades.
Professor Small is not going to pass you for showing up. You'll have to work for it. Have a solid understanding of ENC1101, review it if necessary. He doesn't do great with dumbing down language for community college level learners as he's extremely intelligent so ensure you access your tutors. Put in work and ask for help and you'll be fine.
The class is not that bad, but the professor does have a VERY high expectations for writing and reading assignments. The work load is above average and he barely accepts late assignments. He gives great feedback and actually have a sense of humor. I would not recommend this class to everyone, but great class for people seeking challenge.
Professor Small is about as good as any ENC professor. His course is demanding but not impossible for those who work hard. He appreciates students who participate in class.
Professor small was great. Although a tough grader he gives very specific feedback and always offers student samples. He kept the learning material fun and relevant to current issues. Don't take his class if you're an anti masker or anti vax, you'd do yourself and him a favor. Overall he's a great professor and I will be taking him for enc1102.
He's okay. Overloads work though and is kind of picky with the grading. Would not recommend if you're taking 3+ classes as the work really adds up and becomes quite stressful. Lectures are pretty worthless as they end up being a rant about something on twitter, but otherwise it could have been worse.
He is okay. Although his grading is tough and will take points out of everything. I would not recommend to take this class on a short semester because he overloads with homework.
It's ENC1102, it's going to be a lot of writing. The assignments and topics were interesting. Not really any lectures in the online class. He is pretty harsh with feedback and grading, but if you listen to him you will do well. Take advantage of the writing tutors if you have problems.
great professor, very fun. you will have to do lots of assignments but they arent very hard.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had, and one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I would never take one of his classes again, I'm glad I didn't take it for credit since I got such a bad grade. Didn't even use the textbook once, it was a waste of money. You have to show up for class or you will fall behind. SERIOUSLY DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I would definitely take this class again, but probably not with this professor. All topics of writing were based around social media and not anything merely interesting. He is very kind and gives lots of time to speak to him one on one, but grades are sometimes questionable.
His class was ok but there is a lot of homework and writing. Some of his instructions for assignments is confusing. For better understanding of his instructions talk to him in person.
The layout of this class is all over the place. It is difficult to follow what is required due to distracting links and overly wordy instructions. Tough grader & takes forever to grade papers. His overly liberal content can be a bit much.
Professor Small's class was a relatively easy class with a medium workload throughout the week. He cares about his students, and his lectures are very entertaining and clearly shows his passion for the work he does. The grading can be tough on the assignments, but makes sure to give good responses. You can only miss 6 classes for the semester.
I genuinely LOVED taking this class. Professor Small tries to keep the class interesting, even though he knows the required topics can be a bit much. Gives LOTS of feedback (usually with a bit of humor/gifs tied in). If you put in the effort to learning and interacting, the class and professor are enjoyable. Prepare for lots of writing (duh)
Do not take. Very harsh grader. Unclear expectations and does not give advice, just bashes performance. Overall, not a good experience. Wouldn't recommend if your life depends on it. Take any other teacher but this one.
Extremely harsh grader. Assignments are wordy and he is quick to give zeros if you don't understand the assignment. Extremely quick to call out any students who he believes are cheating even if he has no evidence, just his gut feeling. Really lenient with turn in dates. Don't take his class. He is condescending and rude to his students.
Professor Small was amazing. He graded essays within a week, provided paragraphs of insight, and responded to messages within 24 hours. His mindset is left-leaning, which peaks through slightly in his grading but not enough to negatively effect the course. I was in the accelerated Summer B course and still felt comfortable with the amount of work.
He tries to push his political agenda through his work. If you put in the work, it's a passable class. Overall, it's not a fun class, and I would not recommend it.
A freshman killer with superiority complex that teaches his opinions: if you are assigned to take a stance in an argumentative essay, he will grade harshly if you do not write from the stance he agrees with. I didn't feel he was approachable, and his class gave me a new kind of anxiety. Take ENC1101 with literally anyone else if you can.
I will say that he gives more assignments and work than other professors would, but sometimes it's helpful for future essays. He does make you read out loud and class discussions are mandatory. I liked the essay topics and he also gave a lot of feedback. Be prepared to listen to Drake.
This class does require you to read words. It also may require you to read words that you might disagree with. This class will also require you to write words, which some may find distasteful. Due to this class being about "Literature Appreciation", you will only get out of it what you put in. Mr. Small is great and his class was a fun experience.
It is truly tragic that in a literature class you may in fact have to read things. For people not good with this fact, taking literature may not be your thing. This is genuinely one of my favorite classes I have ever taken. A good class that is taught by an even better teacher. Make sure to stay on top of assignments and you will have no problem :>
Professor Small is a really good professor, he actually cares about his students and his job but makes the class enjoyable. Highly recommend!
Professor Small was great, and it's clear he cares for his students. He lays out exactly what's expected on assignments and provides helpful, constructive feedback. He's online savy and sprinkles in different humorous aspects throughout the course. Essays account for a good chunk of the course/grade, but he gives ample time to plan and write them.
There were many essays but Professor Small was very organized and gave helpful feedback. I believed I learned a lot from his class.
Professor Small was amazing. He is clearly intelligent and cares for his students. His feedback was detailed, which helped me improve future assignments. This class challenged my writing skills.Put in the work you will succeed in his class. He will not condone laziness, I didn't have an issue with that but he would send group emails about the use of AI
His coursework improves one's reading/comprehension skills. His classes were fun and engaging. The tasks were manageable as long as you attended and participated in class. The material he chose assisted in helping me express myself. He allows you to reflect on what is important to YOU, which is easy to write about. I recommend him as a Professor.
Mr. Small was a great professor who cared about his students. his lectures were awesome and were very entertaining. I appreciated the way the lectures and the assignments were based relevant topics that were unfolding at the time of the assignment. he made all the assignments easy and straightforward, and his feedback was always very helpful.
Professor Small is an excellent teacher. He gives a lot of valuable feedback on every assignment. He also values creativity within his class which I find refreshing. Lots of work, do not get me wrong but there is a practicality behind it all. He grades fairly and will justify your grade with valuable feedback. HATES AI. Would take his courses again
Professor Small is a decent ENC1102 teacher. He provides good feedback and responds to questions in a timely manner. He does not tolerate the use of AI and will send out messages if you use AI. He provides examples for all assignments, so you understand what is expected. You cannot be lazy and take this class. I would retake him as a professor.
You must know how to speak English, and you must write your own material which you have conjured from your own cognitive ability in order to do great in his class. If you can do that, you're going to LOVE this professor. He's not boring, he allows you to reflect your own ideas. He is helpful. I enjoyed his study plan which is progressive.
was ok i guess
This was my very first semester in school and Professor Small literally made it a breeze. Any questions or concerns he answered them in timely manner. He actually humanized writing and expected the very best while giving us the best feedback. I would highly recommend anybody to take his course.
Yes... Just yes
Professor Small was an amazing professor. This was my first online class and was worried about the workload, but he made ENC1102 very manageable and fun. Is very understand and works with students. Highly recommend!
One of my favorite professors of all time! He's so caring, passionate, flexible, and willing to work with you. He will give you extensions if you ask nicely and respect him throughout the class. It was my easiest class and I learned a lot. There are essays but he has you do outlines and stuff to prepare you so that the actual essay isn't to bad.
I took ENC1102 online with Professor Zahir Small, and he's awesome! He's supportive, gives great feedback, and lets you pick any research topic you want. The class builds on one paper all semester, so the final feels manageable. He genuinely cares about his students—highly recommend!
Awesome professor and genuinely cares if you do well. He will give you extensions if you need them and gives great feedback. I highly recommend him and this was one of my most enjoyable classes. When I had him there were 2 hurricanes and he automatically gave us all extensions without even asking. Best professor ever!
Great professor to take for Enc1101. Always seemed to find a way to make what we were writing about thought provoking and fascinating. Class rarely ever felt boring and you can tell he's passionate about what he teaches. If you love learning and you have a good work ethic you'll love this professor.
If you want to take your writing skills to the next level, take Professor Small. Tough grader, but he provides clear and applicable feedback for you to improve. He is vehemently against AI, so don't tempt fate by thinking you can get away with it. Keep metadata on your papers; it's helpful in case you have deal with any plagiarism charges.
I personally loved Prof. Small. He was a very funny and upbeat guy and he provided a good in class experience. He provided some interesting and unique assignments that were different than the typical paper. He gave very good feedback as well. Highly recommend Prof. Small for ENC1101!
I experienced very little uncertainty in this class. Professor Small gave feedback on every one of my submissions, was very kind and humorous, and responded quickly to Canvas messages. He gives very detailed instructions for each assignment, and if you follow all of them, you get full points. Many assignments are personal/reflection based.
Took ENC1102 online. The entire semester is building upon a scholarly research paper. Each assignment connects to the other, making the final essay fairly straightforward. Professor Small was easy to contact and provides great feedback. He has good humor and has a lot of insight to share. Please respect the course and do NOT use A.I in any regard.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Communication is key and there is a ton of writing as expected but if you keep up with the due dates and work ahead whenever possible you won't have a bad grade. He was also very understanding with situations outside of the classroom and helped work with me when it came to turning in an assignment or two.
Only 4 essays for the semester. He'll reference Drake a lot as examples somehow. Don't use AI because he will point that out real quick and make a report since he also is on the Student Conduct Council. His class is pretty straightforward and easy. Also gives very clear guidelines for each assignment. Not a harsh grader tbh. Did i say don't use AI?
Professor Small was awesome. His class was such a good class for me to start with. I won't say it's easy but if you pay attention and just try you should excel nicely. He has a couple essays in total but before them he has you do some worksheets to make it easier to do the final draft of your essays. It is such an awesome setup
Such a great professor that I'm taking him again next semester! Very kind and will get to know you if you let him! He shows real interest in his students and their growth and I am so grateful. Don't use AI! He understands that it's part of how students write now, but if you avoid it, you will gain so much more from the class.
