reads directly from powerpoint. When trying to explain to class she is confusing and lets students in class talk too much; taking up lecture time.
Took Dr. Z for soc266 it was very interactive both in class and on Canvas. This is a discussion based class so if you don't like discussions it's not for you. Two papers, two exams and chapter quizzes. I wish it was in person but breakout groups were still fun.
Soc 200 with Professor Rafie was engaging and enlightening. So many topic covered and so many discussions. Chapter quizzes help with the midterm and final. Three papers were fun to do. Course was organized.
Took this professor for Soc200 and Soc266. Learnt a great deal. Soc 200 is more structured 2 exams, 2 papers and weekly quizzes. Soc 266 is more discussion based, we did a group workbook which was really useful in helping us apply the theory to real world events. Lots of good discussions.
She's very helpful and will meet with you to help. 2 exams, 2 papers and chapter quizzes. The class dynamic was engaging. She's flexible and very understanding.
The course is well organized. She is a great professor. What stood out to me the most is the way she handles difficult students with so much care and respect. It warmed my heart that we still have decent human beings!
Straight forward course. 2 exams, weekly quizzes, 5 discussions and 2 papers. Lots of sensitive material covered in a thoughtful and informative way. Good use of textbook but lecture material is her own which helps you understand the textbook reading. Good discussions if you get involved.
Best I could wish for online! Well organized and easy to follow.
2 exams, 16 chapter quizzes, 2 papers. She provides a lot of online resources which really helped me as I'm a visual learner. Lectures were divided up into small sections. Breakout rooms were good when you got a good group and terrible if you didn't.
@ thumbs up!
This class should be mandatory. If you are looking for a higher level soc course, look no further. This was such a safe space to discuss and learn about sensitive topics in a thoughtful and respectful manner. It was cathartic, I learnt so much and shared so much. I actually looked forward to class! It almost felt like no work at all!
Soc 200 was so streamlined and easy to follow. Prof. Rafie is accessible and is happy to meet with you during office hours. She is very patient and helpful. Would def recommend this prof.
Best online option. Take her!
Legit the kindest and most caring prof you could ever meet!
This is my first review I ever do for a teacher so I hope that means something. She is very kind and an easy grader. Her tests and quizzes are super easy. Her lectures are quite long but nothing hard. The textbook was free for my class. If Im being honest I didnt even pay attention to it. I just followed the notes. Best teacher at NOVA!
She is one of the best professors at NOVA! She goes over the material well, she gives you unlimited attempts on the homework quizzes, and she is an easy grader. I highly recommend her!
Streamlined course, 2 exams both multiple choice, 2 papers and chapter quizzes. She is very caring and understanding but she's a stickler for fairness, will not change her policy but if you communicate with her and have a legitimate issue she will help. I really enjoyed the discussion would probably be much better in person.
One of my all time favorite profs. She is very passionate about sociology and makes you want to learn. She treats you like a real person and in very caring. I highly recommend her.
I'm in awe of how engaging this class is even on Zoom. I never have my camera on but in this class I can't wait to turn it on and participate. There is so much interesting topics covered, so many discussions and so much respect for everyone's opinion. A true gem of a professor!
This is my second semester at NOVA and my first time in college in the US. Prof Rafie has been by far the most helpful and understanding professor. She has met with me several times to go over material, she is very happy to answer questions without making you feel stupid. She has great respect for every person and every culture.
This course was online synchronous. Canvas was well organized. Expectations and deadlines were clear. The work was not too much. Chapter quizzes, 2 exams, 2 papers. Prof Rafie lectured for 15/20 mins, followed by a video and breakout room discussion. Sometimes no one participated in breakout rooms but I guess that's not her fault.
Nicely done! Easy to understand and do well! Would def rec.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! TAKE HER YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH. IT MAKES YOU GROW AS A PERSON!
A very fair teacher, she is easy to understand and will explain anything you don't understand.
Such a sweetheart! She will go out of her way to help her students. Super knowledgeable but very humble, makes everyone feel they belong and have something worthwhile to contribute. She has a knack of making you feel special. Super organized and easy to follow course. Everything is on Canvas and the book is free!
Best online course. It was set up well and easy to follow. Right amount of lecture and discussion time. Accessible outside of class. Helped me in so many ways!
Amazing professor! Textbook is free. There are chapter quizzes. a Midterm, a Final, and 3 assignments. Not a lot of homework, take notes during class, and look at the slides she provides on canvas.
Amazing professor and such a great class. Take her you wont regret it! There are very few assignments, and everything is laid out for you.
This course with Professor Rafie should be mandatory. It was eye opening and very informative. It's discussion based but the textbook is used for quizzes and exams but she goes way beyond the textbook. Lots of extra very interesting reading resources.
She is the best! She is extremely respectful, kind, understanding, and patient! Take her you won’t regret it!
Prof Rafie is my favorite professor at NOVA. Very passionate about what shes teaching. Class was easy enough as long as you paid attention/took notes. Theres 2-3 papers and a group project at the end. Would highly recommend if you're looking for an easygoing and informative class to satisfy a humanities requirement.
Dr. Rafie is 100% amazing. This course is full of uncomfortable subjects for a lot of people, but she leads these conversations with such respect and competence that I never felt like I was out of my depth. Her teaching philosophy is commendable and I would recommend her class to anyone, regardless of major. You can apply what you learn everywhere.
Great professor, well organized course, will work with you but she has a no make up policy for midterm and final exam (except emergencies), material is a lot but she explains it well and simplifies really complex themes so it's easy to understand and apply. I liked her and her teaching style, so recommend! :)
Sociology of Gender should be taken by everyone in today's world. I thought I knew everything but learnt so much from this course. It was so inspirational and eye opening. Prof. Rafie took such a respectful approach so we all felt comfortable even when we disagreed! Take this you'll love it. Trust me!
Gem of a professor. I took a 6 weeks online summer course with Dr. Z, everything was straight forward and organized on canvas. It was very interactive for a zoom class, she kept your attention by using different activates. She is very respectful and answers emails quickly! Highly recommend Dr. Z!
Prof Rafie was amazing! So calm and caring. The course was well organized and interesting. I learnt a lot and made good friends even though it was a zoom class.
Prof. Zahra is a great teacher, she goes over the material and explains everything for the class syllabus, good lectures, and quizzes are there to help you prepare for the exam, and she is staying until the end of class to answer any questions if students have.
Sociology of Gender was a great course to take with Prof. Z , she knows her stuff! It was super interesting, well organized and not too much work. Textbook was used as well as other course material, articles, video clips, blogs and research sites. If you're thinking about it take it.
Best online professor hands down! Organized, knowledgeable and super caring. You can't go wrong.
Jolly amazing and Dr Rafie is my Most Favourite Professor on both sides of the Atlantic and this whole planet/universe.
I've had Dr. Z both on line and now in person. The online course (soc 266) was great but the in person is even better. There's so much discussion, she covers a lot of material and sometimes a bit fast but she is more than happy to go over things and she gives you "stretch breaks" which I love because I can't sit still for1:20 mins! Haha!
kind, calm and caring. She makes your worries melt away. Learning has never been so easy. She makes you feel welcomed and like you have something important to say.
Prof. Rafie helped when I was struggling academically and personally. She encouraged me and helped me stay on track, she helped me figure out my learning style and provided me with extra resources that really made me do well in this course.
Jolly amazing, brilliant, and wonderful Dr Rafie is my Most Favourite Professor on both sides of the Atlantic and this whole universe/planet. My Best advice for all students is just to take her Sociology classes and sign up for her classes.
Annoying. Talks too much and never shuts her mouth. You are forced to participate in group discussions. So many assignments and tests. DO NOT TAKE HER.
I don't know who wrote the last comment but dude if you find this class hard and overwhelming you're going to be toast! This is by far one of the best classes I've taken, no busy work, no nonsense. Dr. Rafi's lectures are informative, she so knowledgeable. How can she teach if she doesn't talk bro? :) She sees her students as individuals.
There are few classes that have a real and immediate impact on the way you view the world. Prof. Rafie's course breaks down our fundamental understanding of the world and shows us methods of understanding society. if you enjoy a class that values your participation and like healthy debate, you will likely enjoy her class.
Great professor, knows her stuff, breaks it down in a very understandable way. She's willing to work with you if you put in the work, the work is straight forward no busy work. I would definitely take her again, our class had great discussions and I made so many friends.
This was so easy and yet I learnt so much. She really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Helped me out so much.
Dr. Z is great, she teaches the content really well, uses lectures, videos and discussion. The work is laid out clearly as it the grading criteria, she's an easy grader as long as you follow the rubrics. She makes it simple to learn as long as you're ready to pay attention and follow along.
All quizzes are on lockdown browser, but unlimited time and no die dates. She lectures a lot of interesting thing during class, and all quizzes and exams will be from lecture slides or book. Several written assignments that are not too difficult. Overall, she is very nice and caring.
This is sociology so there's going to be "theory" and talking, lectures are informative and build on the textbook reading, she's very knowledgeable. Dr. Rafie is understanding and cares about her students.
I would recommend this instructor; she was kind and good with discussions. she is supper organized and interesting to teacher. She was kind in responding to controversial questions throughout the course. She is super easy to understand.
She's a clear instructor, explains the topics really well and makes sure the class atmosphere is friendly. I enjoyed the topics covered in this class. They were very beneficial for my growth and understanding of the world around me.
She was a great professor and had very engaging lectures. There were a few papers, and they were easy to do given you went to class and referenced the textbook when writing them. Chapter quizzes helped with exams a lot.
I learned so much from this course that will effect how I think of the world around me in the future. I really value the knowledge I have now. I also liked some of the activities and discussions we had, overall awesome course!
I would definitely recommend this instructor to another student because she is easy to understand when she is explaining the course material and if a student needs any type of clarification she is always happy to clarify any questions that students may have.
I enjoyed how friendly Dr. Rafie was towards her students and how lenient she was with assignment due dates. She always stayed after class to help. Kind and caring teacher.
The best sociology professor I've met. Very funny personal stories that humanized the class! I genuinely learned a lot from this class, and Prof. Rafie was super nice! I
This was one of the best course I have ever taken, such a controversial class but taught with such grace, easy and intelligence. YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
This was a zoom synchronous class. It was well organized, and the lectures were engaging. There was no busy work or crazy schedule. It was streamlined and the work was easy as long as you did the reading and follow along in the lectures.
Understanding teacher, clear grading criteria, good amount of work. Nice class.
Such an amazing course, so much rich content handled with such grace. I think this course can benefit you in so many ways. Great discussion, articles, and assignments are so interesting. I look forward to class every week.
Dr. Z is well organized, we had a fair amount of work, 12 chapter quizzes, 2 exams and 2 papers. Turn up listen follow the assignments schedules on Canvas and you can't go wrong. Also super interesting person, I had a lot of cool convos with her. I actually like sociology now after taking this course.
Took the online once a week class, it was well organized and the work load was very manageable. 2 exams, 2 papers and weekly quizzes. Straight forward course. Professor sends out weekly reminders of work due and responds to emails quickly. She even stays after class if you have questions or need clarification.
This course was well organized and easy to follow. Dr. Z's lectures are informative and helps you understand the text book reading. Quizzes and exams are based off the course material, no surprise questions. 2 papers and one short video presentation, clear instructions and she's very accommodating it. Take care if you need a sociology course!
Rafie was a good teacher and so long as you study/understand the material (i.e. quizzes and notes) you should do well. There are two papers and a presentation -- Rafie told us not to work ahead but announced this presentation the week before finals week; my class assumes she forgot and were disgruntled. Overall, she is a good teacher.
What I liked most about the class is how she gave us the chapter readings as homework, which allowed us to have basic knowledge of terminologies used for lectures during class. I understood everything so well because of Dr. Rafie's explanations during lectures. She makes sure you understand the concepts and not just memorize them. Loved her.
I had a good learning experience in this class. Dr. Rafie is well-versed in the subject. She is easy to contact and very kind and understanding. she always made sure everyone was understanding the material.
Dr. Rafie is very kind and respectful. She knows the topics very well and is a great teacher. Dr. Rafie is amazing through and through.
For me personally, I loved her!! She was also open to hearing out our discussions and actively conversed with the class. She was very helpful and accommodating with all of her students. She's the type to work with you instead of against you, which I appreciate.
She is an amazing professor, I hardly recommend her!, Her class is very interesting and what I liked the most is that I actually connected with my classmates because in every class she had us making groups to discuss a topic (this is not for a grade) mainly to hear different perspectives. W had an open notes quiz every week, one paper, and 2 exams.
If you're looking for extra sociology classes this is a great option. I went in unsure and came out wowed! She's very respectful and considerate of differences of opinion. The material can be tricky if it's not handled well but she's a pro, she makes you understands so much specially about your own biases! I don't usually write reviews lol.
Professor Rafie is a great teacher and cares a lot about the topics allowing open discussion without fear of being ostracized. I would recommend this course to anyone. This course gives great insight on how many people see the world and provides a great discussion starter to hear other opinions.
Zahra is one of the best profs I've ever had. Answers questions thoughtfully/in-depth, uses free course materials, and makes ppt presentations from lectures easily accessible. She's patient and wants everyone to have a firm grasp on concepts. She's also incredibly socially aware and savvy, which is especially valuable in a sociology course.
OMG!!!! She's the best. I have never met a professor more invested in her students. She truly wants you to succeed and do well. She is so supportive and accommodating. She is super patient, caring and knowledgeable. Take her you won't regret it!
This was a great course, very well structured and easy to follow. The lectures were clear and engaging. I liked everything. It's interactive and if you don't like participation, it will grow on you because it's a friendly and welcoming class.
She was an okay Professor. Did not really mind about due dates or missing class. She never once replied to my emails though. It is an easy class but long lectures, mostly discussion based.
Professor Rafie taught the material well, treated students fairly and was flexible. She offered expert knowledge of the material and explained the ideas of the class in a fun and engaging way. I loved the discussions as it offered opportunities to expand learning and understanding of concepts.
This course was well organized and very informative. I don't usually write reviews but I had to write one for Dr. Rafie not because she's a great professor, which she was but because she's a genuinely caring person who will go out of her way to help her students and make them succeed. She's a gem of a person.
So the thing about her class is the stuff in the 2 and some hours of lecture a week pertains little to the actual test material. That being said, it's pretty easy and you only need to study two hours per week on the textbook in order to be ready for the weekly assignments and the midterm/final.
So this is my second time taking this class! :) I took it once on-line but didn't get a good grade, loved Prof. Rafie so much I took the class again in person. In person is so much nicer, so interactive and so many discussions. Never a dull moment. I have learnt a lot and made some great friends. Highly recommend.
Professor Rafie is easily my favourite social studies prof after taking this course. Not only is she incredibly intelligent and open minded but she is also a wonderful educator. The group discussions we had were interesting and educational. She cares so much about her students, I highly recommend taking sociology with her. Participation matters!!
Dr. Rafie is most knowledgeable in this subject and makes it interesting and enjoyable to learn about. She is also a very understanding and kind instructor and always makes sure the class understands the material. She would always stay after class to help students and would even post jobs, internships and scholarships. Very caring professor.
Dr. Rafie is a kind and amazing teacher; her lectures and class activities were very interactive. She is organized and clear with her class grading requirements. If any doubts arise, she is more than glad to help. I really enjoyed her class.
I enjoyed how friendly the professor was towards her students, she stayed after class to help you understand the assignment, if you needed help. The lectures were very insightful and exciting. I enjoyed the class discussion and how Dr. Rafie did her best to make everyone interact despite being on zoom.
I loved how passionate and knowledgeable Professor Rafie was. She always encouraged thoughtful and enriching conversations, and allowed for everyone in the class's thoughts to be heard and valued. The layout of the course was set up perfectly, and the syllabus and assignments were clear.
I enjoyed how Professor Rafie lectured for about half of the class, and then opened the class to discussion opportunities. The professor was very willing to explain anything if we had questions and really challenged us with critical questions. Overall it was pretty straight forward class and not a ton of homework. I'd recommend.
Dr. Z has a passion for teaching about sociology and she makes you want to learn more. This course was very well organized. Thumbs up!
Professor Rafie's SOC200 class was engaging and thought-provoking. She encouraged insightful discussions and was always willing to clarify concepts. The material was challenging but manageable, and tools like unstuckstudy helped supplement my studies.
Dr. Z was one of the best professors I've ever had. She is extremely caring and the coursework was really enlightening. Currently, the course consists of 12 chapter quizzes (extended deadline and multiple attempts), 1 paper, 2 exams (midterm and final), and one final powerpoint. I definitely recommend you choose her as your professor!
In todays climate everyone should take Soc 266 (with Professor Rafie! :) She makes complex theories easy to understand and teaches you how to apply them in your life. This course was incredibly eye opening. Amazing content, amazing professor. I would recommend her to all students looking to expand their horizons.

Prof Z is both incredibly knowledgeable and an excellent instructor. She is well spoken and can explain complex ideas and kame them seem simple. She's also a very interesting person but very relatable and down to earth. A rare combo in my opinion! Hehe!
Dr. Rafie is definitely the best Professor I have ever had online. She is kind, patient and extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. She has a wonderful communication style. Her lectures are engaging and she genuinely cares about every student.
