Marczuk has a heavy accent and bad handwriting to be completely honest but you get used to it pretty quickly. He goes over everything you read and you don't really need the books. He constantly asks the class if we have questions to make sure we know whats going on. He does tend to talk for a long time but overall he's a really easy teacher.
As long as you put in your opinion about a topic, you should get a least a B.
You MUST take good notes in this class to pass. He lets you use your notes for the midterm and final, so good note taking is a must. Don't miss class or you might miss important notes.
Marczuk is calm and collective and is a true philosopher of his own. He doesn't like chatter, and I don't blame him because it's rude and some of us actually want to hear and pay attention. Don't talk or be on your phone or you'll regret not knowing the material. Participate, engage in discussion, work with him and you'll be fine!
Great teacher, Philosophy is a challenge in itself but he does a great job explaining theories, giving examples, and keeping his personal opinion about the subject to himself. You just have to sit in the front to understand him & his handwriting. Come to class, discuss, ask questions & you'll pass with understanding of the subject.
He is the type of professor that does not seem to care about students future's nor education. His questions asked for papers were incomplete and confusing. Many students in class had a hard time with his work as a result of the questions asked. I would recommend a different professor. Phi 101 is hard and he does not make it easier, nor seem to care
The two Short Assignments we had did not always have clear directions, so a lot of the class seemed to struggle with them, including myself. However, the midterm and final were both open book and notes, so take great notes and pay attention! He is very kind, understanding, and helpful when you go to him for any help. Hard class, but not the worst!
This man should not be an instructor. He does not know how to teach. He does not care about the students and is rude if you ask for help. The subject itself is hard to grasp and he has no intentions on making it CLEAR for you to understand. Don't take him. I'd advise that you take someone else or go to a different school for this subject..
Seemingly just grades things arbitrarily and if your opinion differs from his it's wrong His instructions for his short assignments as well as some of the questions on his tests are quizzical at best and totally nonsensical at worst Still have no idea what he wanted out of me in his assignments and frankly am surprised I passed. NO Grading Criteria
Very unclear assignments. He thought you should know everything in the book in a week and answer the questions. After you did not answer clear enough he was completely rude in the comments as to why you got the grade you did. I did not think he was very nice, and his assignments and exams were very hard and very intense.
He gives no grading criteria AT ALL, takes points off and you have no idea how many or for what reason. He provides you with no notes, and expects you to perform A grades from the textbook which is confusing. You CANNOT get ahold of him because he doesn't email you back. Exams are open but questions are difficult and he gives no notes to draw from.
He is by far the worst teacher i have. He has an accent so its hard to hear him. he doesn't speak up so it makes it harder to understand, his handwriting is awful, he cant spell, i could not focus at all in this class cause his teaching methods are boring and just awful. Please save yourself and do NOT take him as your teacher. You will regret it.
I took this class expecting it to be interesting. No. I can barely understand what he's saying because speaks extremely broken english, with a very low voice, and has a strong polish accent. Participation is a letter grade. It's a 2 hour and 45 minute class with 0 breaks. He doesn't care about youyour grade. There are only 2 tests a semester tho.
Had trouble in the online class, so sat in on one or two on campus classes. Got a feel for what he was looking for, definitely helped. He's easy on the eyes as well.
Really willing to help you understand if you just talk to him after class
If you talk to him and ask questions, he will take the time to explain it to you. Sometimes talking with him can be difficult but he means well and does want you to understand the topic. He is very passionate about philosophy.
Lectures are kind of confusing. But if you make an effort to answer, he does his best to explain. He says everything more than once, so it's not too hard to get the info. But you should ALWAYS READ BEFORE CLASS. So if there's something you're going to talk about next class, make sure you read it beforehand, otherwise you won't know what's going on.
This man clearly knows what he is talking about and has mastered the subject matter. Whether you are required to take his course or you choose it, it will leave you curious and wanting. Be prepared for him to ask impossible questions. He really tries to engage and make you think. I wish he taught more classes. I would gladly take them!
This guy has a bad rep for being hard to understand, but really he isn't! He is so great, and if you ask for the help, he is willing to sit and talk with you until you understand whatever the topic is. The class isn't hard at all if you put even the tiniest bit of effort into it. I can't wait to take him again!
He is a great professor. His accent is hard to get used to at first, but he's a great guy, has a good sense of humor, and is willing to go over hard material with you again during class, or after in his office. The course itself is sort of hard, but he tries to break it down into easier terms and examples. Give it a go.
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE CLASS. Does not answer emails for up to two weeks, removes assignments before he is supposed to so you get a zero, and as hard as you try he refuses to give you an A.
Tough subject- he helps break it down into smaller sections and helps you better understand the material. One of the best professors at this college.
While the topics are interesting, I wouldn't at all recommend taking him online. If he doesn't understand your professional wording due to his language barrier he deems it incorrect. Takes a while to grade assignments, and provides notes on assignments AFTER they are due. I've heard he's a better lecture professor, so perhaps go that route.
This class was the single worst I have EVER taken. He doesn't have good time management skill, does not respond to emails, leaves confusing comments on DQs, does not make DQ response expectations clear, and honestly, it felt like he was being degrading for the entire course. This is a beginers class, we aren't experts, stop treating us like we are.
This guy is the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are almost word for word from the textbook. He just drones on and on. He's condescending when none of us will participate in class discussion, but he's still condescending if you do participate! It's an 8 AM class. Chill! I wish I'd dropped this class. Can't wait for the semester to end.
He is a nice guy, but can be a difficult course. He would take points off my papers and just write a ? and never explain why. When I asked about it, he really didn't answer my question. He likes to see participation and effort, so even if you don't understand still work with him.
This class is fantastic. I love the fact it makes you think differently. He is a caring professor, if you're a caring student. I would say he is adept at determing who is engrossed versus trying to skate by. Tests are open book open note, but time bound. Read, ask questions, participate and you will fare well. He answers emails within 24 hours.
This class was interesting yet difficult. What I liked about the class was that I learned a new style of thinking about life. What I didn't like was how Mr. M wanted all of your open-ended answers to match his personal opinions 100%, otherwise he'll start marking off points. Also, your answers have to match the word count exactly, no more, no less.
I did both online and in class the homework is the same just like in class. You won't even need that $89 book not worth the time cause he writes everything on the bored but you will need the smaller book. Maybe if I had a different teacher I would have had a better understanding but he isn't the best teacher
What he asks for in his assignments are just as confusing as philosophy itself. He has discussion boards you have to complete every week but be prepared to receive harsh criticism and a low grade on the assignment unless you have the ability to read minds and know the EXACT wording he is looking for which does not constitute a "discussion."
If youre planning on taking the online version of this class, don't. In fact, avoid this teacher all together. It consists of discussion questions and short answers and two tests which are entirely opinion based, and if the teacher doesnt like your opinion, you fail. He doesnt understand the concept of an online class and makes it difficult.
Nice guy but hard to understand through his accent. Doesnt give out much to be graded on. But he lets you use notes on midterm and final since its your only test grades which is cool. He wants you to understand the material. He likes when the class gives opinion and debates the topic. Read your material pages given, it will help you understand.
This guy is absolutely awful. He's an associate professor who does part time work with the college. I have never had a class where a professor sets word limits below 300 words and expects competent detailed essays. He waited until the last day of the semester to grade work, and then gives notes about how you should have done it.
The class had an okay routine but my issue is that most professors post their schedule in the beginning of the semester so the student can plan ahead. I ended up missing both the midterm and the final (each 30% of the final grade) because of how all my other classes have a schedule and this one did not.
I read everything & follow directions well. Truth, he doesn't grade fairly or according to his directions, he really does grade you on his opinion, and writings have to be his words as if things can't be explained in more than 1 way. His feedback isn't helpful, just quotes. This is a beginners course, therefore grading should reflect just that.
Dont take this class online. He doesnt grade things until the very last minute and answers your questions with a question. I feel like I learned nothing about ethics when I was really interested in the course.
I had this class once a week for 2.5 hours. His lectures will put you to sleep guaranteed. He has almost no control over the students. Most classes should be mature but everyone asks dumb questions and I havent learned a thing. He isnt from the United States and has a strong accent and sometimes broken English.
Good teachers are mirrors for their students. What you put forth is what you get. If you do the reading and make a genuine attempt, you will succeed and most likely be a better person for it. Marczuk makes himself available to you as a student and is passionate about his craft.
Hard to understand accent, but you get used to it and can understand him later. 4 comprehensible grading assignments : 2 Short Assignments, Midterm, and Final. Do poorly on Midterm? Gives extra credit assignment. Need more than 10 people for fun class. Text book use minimal. Last minute grading. Not very energetic teaching style.
As long as you show up to class and take notes you can pass this class, he does does give many assignments so making sure you do your work is important. If you take notes the midterm and final are open book open notes.
I'm taking his Philosophy 101 class online, and it's possibly the worst class I've ever taken. For a class that's supposed to be an INTRO to a subject, the work is extremely confusing, and very very difficult. This guy treats the class like it's an advanced philosophy course when it's an intro class. I should have payed attention to the bad reviews
Took him for the summer course. Hes very meticulous and does not allow any redoings of things or if you miss something he wont open it. I have been trying to email him and he will not answer me. His class isnt too difficult, hes just very particular in what hes looking for.
Online class for Ethics was a joke. Easiest class I have ever taken. He gives you the notes that he'll test you on. Theres a DQ every week, two short assignments, a midterm and final. Highly recommend taking his online class if you need the credits but dont care about the subject.
Super picky about answers. Requires a ton of reading
Philosophy is a hard class to teach, but boy does this guy do it well! He knows everything you need to know about this subject. He always knows the answer to your questions as well. I would recommend this class to anyone, I'm not a huge "school person" I love learning in his class. 2 exams and 2 short assignments all year.
I scheduled myself for this course thinking I would be able to expand my knowledge on the subject. Professor Marczuk did not enhance my understanding in this subject at all. He teaches with no energy or clarity. He only gives 2 assignments and 2 exams throughout the entire semester so it is hard to put to practice the material he tries to explain.
Professor Marczuk is a very good professor and I would take him again. As with most classes, you'll get out of it what you put in. Papers are relevant to couse work and as long as you are engaged in class and take notes you should be fine. He is not difficult to understand and he is always happy to clarify board notes or statements when asked.
This was a very difficult class for me and if I had to take it again I would not. His answers to discussion questions are just as confusing as the questions. It's like he expects you to be as knowledgeable about the subject as he is.
This is the first course I have ever received a C. This course dropped my GPA down tremendously all because he grades things according to his perspective and not because of the right answer. If you need to take this course DO NOT take this professor you will get a low grade no matter what you do.
Required DQs every week with one response, some of the readings are short while others are really long. Gives extra credit assignment in the beginning which really helps. He is also not very responsive outside of class and sometimes gets due dates mixed up. Midterm and final are really hard to be prepared to study a lot.
I failed this guy class the first time, now Im taking him again he thinks your opinion doesnt matter must be his and his grading is so messed up even if you get the correct answers, worst professor ever and worst grader ever. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS YOU WILL FAIL AND IF YOUR SPECIAL NEEDS DONT TAKE HIS CLASS, EXPECT YOU KNOW THE MATERIAL.
Did my work to the fullest and was constantly knit picked. Terrible professor, would never take again. You have no freedom for interpretation, he looked for what he was looking for. Felt like he tried to fail me
This professor does not answer in a timely fashion. we are expected to do assignments and turn them in on time but then it takes a month for them to be graded. he knit picked everything and your opinion never mattered. no matter how you answered the questions the answers were never correct. I would never take this teacher again.
its an easy class tbh
Makes Philosophy super hard. You will have an easier time taking it in a classroom. Not clear grading criteria, and takes an opinion based class and marks you wrong for having an opinion that is not in line with what he thinks you should. Not worth the GPA hit
Do not take this Professor. Hes completely biased towards his own opinion and youll only get an A if youre answer matches with his. Also he takes for ever to grade something. And he even wouldnt let me use a laptop for taking notes. Terrible professor, unfair grader, never taking his course again.
Will never take this professor again. He only cares about his answers and only his answers. So if you give him something other than how he should answer it, you automatically get a bad grade. This professor affected my mental health and I will be sure to NEVER take him again and make aware to everyone I know how terrible his teaching skills are.
I'm not someone who hates on professors, just because they could really be trying to teach, but this guy hated giving everyone grades. It's like it doesn't matter what you do how hard you try he will find a way to cut your marks. I easily score hundred or 90 plus with a fair prof bc I work hard with this guy I could not score 8o + my gpa went bad
If you value your GPA don't take his accelerated online courses. He's unorganized, and gives no additional links to help you understand the reading. He expects you to understand philosophers like you've dedicated your life to studying them. Pick anyone else.
One of the worst professors in this school, by far. He only gave one extra credit assignments, he does NOT want to reopen the assignments that other students have missed, and his grading is very weird. I do not recommend taking him. As a person with special needs, please do not take this class because he does not want to help you improve.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! I literally paraphrased his notes and he said they were wrong!!Grades no higher than a 78 on everything!!! Says to think outside the box but takes points off if it's not what he wants. TAKE A DIFFERENT TEACHER, SAVE YOUR GPA!!!!! Gives horrible feedback and no direction. I have NEVER had this horrible of a teacher before!!!!!
I have nothing good to say about this class. My experience was accurate in accordance with all of the other negative reviews here. Clearly the school has nobody else to teach this class so this is the best they can do.
This professor was ridiculous. I recommend picking a different professor. He gives notes but even if you paraphrase or base your writing or answers off what he tells you, you are wrong. It takes him almost a whole month or more to grade anything, barely gives any feedback on your responses, besides look at my notes, and doesn't explain what' wrong.
I took this class online, so Ive never met the guy in real life. From what I could gather, hes a tough grader who, like many others have said, only wants to hear his specific answer. If you dont answer a question in the EXACT way he wants it, points will be immediately taken off. He will not let you resubmit assignments either, so beware!
I was nervous signing up for his class strictly based on the negative reviews on this site however, Dr. Marczuk literally provides all the information to do well in his class. If you can read, comprehend and follow instructions, you will do well. I am truly amazed at all of the negativity surrounding this professor. I have an A so far in his class
Absolute worst professor EVER. Whatever you do do not EVER take this professor. Entire setup is extremely confusing and hard to understand. Literally hides assignments and does not post any due dates anywhere. Does not matter how hard you try, he is not understanding, and will not help you with anything. Had a 4.0 GPA before his class. Awful man.
I'm not one to say someone is a bad professor, but this man does not care about his students. Regardless of how much effort you put in this man is a very tough grader, and gives no leniency for anything. Your opinion has to be exactly his or your wrong. Do not take his class if you care about your grades.
It's not that he is bad professor but class is hard though. He is very passionate about his job. You just have to look at announcement and past lectures for assignments. Each week there is a discussion post, a mid term, final and two short assignments for the course. I would not take this class if you are worried about your gpa.
I feel that the negative reviews come from the younger students who are used to Googling answers and doing well. He is in fact a tough grader however, if you read the material, his notes and submit your work on time, you will do well. I misread a couple of the assignments and did not fair well on those but did great on the others. Just do the work!
Hardest class i've ever taken and he is such a tough grader for such a hard topic. In his first announcement he wrote "Philosophy is not an easy subject" and then also wrote "you may have a hard time with this course" but then gave me a 74 on my first DQ and wrote incorrect when i tried so hard. wish i could drop this
I took this class online and I think that this was the worst I've ever taken. I always could find the answers in the readings, but in DQs when asked for my opinion he would always give a lower grade if it wasn't exactly his own. His critiques are also nonsensical and have a lot of typos so it is hard to understand what was wrong and how to improve
You know there is a problem with a class when the 'Q and A' section of the discussion posts are people complaining how difficult the material is with no help from the professor. Everything you submit gets critiqued harshly with no explanation of what you did wrong that even makes sense. Followed directions for the assignments and still bad grades.
Professor Marczuk definitely knows what he is talking about, but also seems to think a student taking a intro to ethics course should know just as much. It was difficult, but if you put in the work you should be fine. Biggest piece of advice is to debate on the DQs even if it isn't a debatable topic.
I would not recommend this course with Professor Marczuk. It was hard to follow, confusing, and was toughly graded. I put in so much effort into this course, yet I was not at all satisfied with my grade. The material made no sense and the professor lacked empathy with students with no past philosophy experience. Was difficult for classmates too.
The worst class I ever took.
Grades too harshly for a class that he introduces as a tough concept to handle, many assignments not made aware unless you search for them.
He was terrible. He grades things way to seriously. Every assignment you won't get over a 76 on. If the discussions aren't exactly how he wants them to be hell take off so many points. Short assignments are our opinion, and he gave me a 75 because I was wrong? Last time I checked my opinion is right as long as it's backed up which it was.
Everything you read about this professor is true. He only cares about his opinion on OPINION based assignments. His grading is very strict and if you do not hit it right on the pin, you wont recieve above an 80 on the assignment. I wish I didn't take him, but he was the only professor available for this class all summer. Avoid if possible.
he was absolutely horrible, his grading makes no sense and he talks the whole class about literally nothing. I recommend you stay as far away as possible from his class unless you want to fail. I did all my homework assignments and still failed. he grades too serious.
WORST professor. Absolutely horrible. Does not teach well, does not answer emails, workload and assignments are unclear. If you have any opinion that is not his you are just wrong. I have been a straight A student since highschool and have a 4.0, but would have failed his class if I hadnt fought to be allowed to drop after the drop deadline. Awful.
Took him for summer sem. He gave a decent amount of work but his grading system is horrible. He would literally give you a bad grade for arguing against his work... he has an argumentative assignment then got mad when I was able to argue it and gave me a bad grade. Like wtf. Ended up getting a C+ when i got A+ in the other 4 summer courses i took.
I should have read
My previous comment below was an error, this is my actual review. I should have read the reviews on here before joining the class. You will not receive anything over an 80. If your work does not align with his views, you are automatically wrong. I expect to see this level of education at a graduate level, not an intro level. Avoid at all costs.
Your work has to be EXACTLY perfect or else you will get LOTS of points off. Lacks communication and takes FOREVER TO GRADE. Asks you to debate with other students yet EVERYONE HAS THE SAME ANSWERS BECAUSE WE WERE ALL ASKED THE SAME QUESTION. ASSIGNMENTS ARE HIDDEN SO ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK. IF YOU ARE STILL ABLE TO DROP OUT, DO IT!
Everything said in the previous ratings is true, I regret taking this class. Made me doubt my intelligence when in reality he's just horrible at his job.
awful teacher, he actually isn't teaching anything, just rambling for two hours then your forced to teach yourself all the material. Grades just as poorly as he teaches
He's late every day, his handwriting is just about illegible so you can hardly take notes, he grades assignments incredibly late and knocks off points for the most rediculous reasons
I would strongly advise against this class. I REPEAT, find a different professor! I was excited about taking this course but was severely let down. Unfortunately, your grade will not always reflect the work you put in and his opinion is the only way to present your response to discussions (which are often poorly worded & confusing) God save my GPA.
He is very hard to understand in this lectures, his handwriting is very hard to read let alone take notes from. He is the type of professor where his opinion is the only right opinion. I strongly suggest you don't take him if you want to pass. I took the same class with a different professor and passed with a B
Tough grader. I got a c + and I deserved at least a B +. Always late to class. Hard home work, hard quizzes and tests…..
I was a little shocked to see how bad of a rating Dr. Marczuk has recieved. The class definitely could be confusing at times, but it was not difficult at all. He is always kind and will always say hello to me. I think he is a good guy yall
The first day Dr. Marczuk asked us what the five senses were and a person only knew three. These are the kinds of people taking his class and it's all you need to know. He's a really good person and professor. Take his class if you want to learn something about philosophy and to develop some more clarity in thinking and writing.
Discussion boards are graded extremely harsh coming from someone who has passed multiple AP English exams. When asking for feedback or deeper explanation after about a week you'll receive a philosophical response that doesn't answer your question. Spelling is also a part of the grade yet his responses and posts often have spelling errors, ironic.
Not for everyone. I got by without using the readings and just paying attention to his lectures, but absolutely be prepared to be challenged in this class. Old-fashioned lecture style, does not use blackboard beyond the bare minimum grade postings. Definitely knows what he is talking about and expects you to be able to keep up with him.
You essentially need to be a mind reader to get a high score on any assignment in his class. If you don't put exactly what he wants as an answer it's wrong, doesn't matter if you actually had the right idea; he wants you to word it the way he wants. Look at rate my professor before choosing him. I wouldn't recommend.
Took this for a requirement to fulfill at another school thinking it would be easy. It was not. He's very critical of your work and doesn't give A's lightly. I was read
Do not waste your time taking this class. I thought this would be an easy A, but it was not. I contemplated withdrawing because he was so hard to please. He asks for your opinion, but if you don't give him what he wants to hear, he fails you. He demands perfection, but he doesn't even use correct grammar half the time. I do not recommend.
Im not sure why his reviews are so low. I took this class and it was just long lectures. As a quiet kid, I just sat in the back and listened to music and I still passed. We had 2 assignments and 2 tests the whole semester. The homeworks are easy to do even if you didnt take notes. He talks a lot and is always late to class but hes pretty chill.
DO NOT LISTEN to the negative reviews!!!! His classes are lecture-heavy, but he encourages questions and student engagement. The readings can be tough to grasp, but everything is discussed and explained in class. His class was easily my favorite of the semester.
I did all assignments, participated, did well on exams, and still received a C. Super tough grading on homework assignments. I took 6 classes this semester and received A's in my other 5. My GPA this semester plummeted from this. I read all the reviews before I took the class and thought it would be okay because I'm a good student. I was wrong.
Do not take this class if you want to express your own opinions. There are only two grades for the entire semester, and if he dislikes your answers, you will fail. Also never expected to know why he dislikes like your answers because he wont respond to emails
Do not take this class at ALL COSTS. He will plummet your GPA. I don't care how good of a student you are, you will receive under an A.
