He was a very passionate prof which makes a huge difference. The lectures were pretty long but very informative. Midterms were online and we were able to use the internet and notes. Only draw back was the final was must pass. Very fair exam, quite easy if you go to lectures.
I really liked this prof. His lectures are long but interesting. He is funny and loves his daughter a lot, he showed her pics randomly in his slides. He assigned tasks that I had never done before, such as a field assignment where I had to visit a temple. It helped to make the class unique. He is very clear and precise as to what he wants. Great!
Easily the most helpful prof. @ Carleton. Great class. He actually seems to care about his student's and their success, which I have found to be RARE.
The most rudest and full of himself Prof ever!! He may be easy since its a 1000 course, but his crude behaviour towards the class, lack of sensitivity towards Religions (considering its a reli class), boring monogomous tone make him horrible. Not to mention he is NOT helpful, is RUDE to students. Stay FAAR away from this course!YOu will regret it!!
He gives off an extremely arrogant and haughty vibe. He treates people like they are beneath him...not to mention his offensive and stupid jokes "God is talking to me". Save yourself the trouble and take something else.
Zeba was great! I love his subtle sense of humor. Easy class, but make sure you take notes during the lectures.
Zeba is awesome. He treats religion objectively and although some take offense to this, it is completely appropriate for university and refreshing. He is so clear and the most interesting prof I've had in 4 years of university. Take his courses! He's so helpful and organized!
To the people below who say he is rude to students, don't say stupid things in class and he won't be rude. I found him a very refreshing prof. He's funny, even if he is a little self-absorbed. He can come off as arrogant, but he definately knows his stuff, so he has good reason to be. He's one of the best professors I've ever had. Take this course!
Great professor, he communicates his points well, and is clear in spelling out exactly what he wants you do for assignments. Would take a class with him again in a heartbeat. Previous reviews cite him as being anti-religious, but I didn't find that, he just didn't treat religions and holy books as "facts", either way, he teaches his material well.
Had some pretty funny moments, and expressed himself well in class. The only thing was that it felt like he was just a tiny bit one sided with certain religions. But other then that, it was a relatively good course.
Brilliant religions prof. Doesn't tiptoe around taboo issues or sensitive topics and still keeps classes engaged with a great sense of humour.
Very interesting! Midterms are pretty easy because they're open everything (including internet), but the final is pretty tough and is a must pass. Make sure that you study and it's not too bad. The field assignment is really intersting! If you are a CUTV student, attend the discussion lectures because it's impossible to hear student opinions.
Amazing teacher, easy midterms and essay. If you want an easy A take this course... very good looking also :D
Winter2006: Avoid this class if you want to get above C mark.I wrote my report on a mosque and they gave me%60,I talked to TA&prof, they said i failed to anwser some of the questions!!.nothing specific,Mid-term marks were posted after the deadline!!,he does this every year with an excuse.he changes the outline2weeks before exam.
He has an extremely arrogant and haughty vibe. He treates people like they are beneath him...he doesn't try to help his students. I would try another professor!!
An interesting orator who knows what he is talking about. Not afraid to talk about taboo and controversial issues, and is still sensitive to peoples beliefs. Very knowledgeable, and very approachable. I would recommend any class of his, he makes you want to learn more, that, and his tests and projects are very easy!
It's one of the easiest course you could take! The midterms are all online, which are mostly easy (but you still need to study to know the basics). The Professor is alright, he does have a lot of interest in his area of study.
His exams were online prior to this semester, now they are ridiculously hard. The questions he tests on are mostly facts that you would know if you were a scholar, not just info you would learn as a starter. You can work your but off and still do poorly. His paper is pretty easy though.
Great professor, made lectures interesting to listen to! I actually really enjoyed a lot of the material and I like that he talks critically of religion as well. I'd recommend doing this class on VOD though, there's A LOT of material covered, which is the only thing I didn't like - I found the midterm rather hard as there was so much to remember
Not the bird course I thought it would be. Considering the material spans 3 very major religions he somehow finds a way to ask irrelevant trick questions rather than focusing on important definitions and theories. I find studying for his exams hard and because everyone does well on his papers, it's very hard to get 100. Interesting lectures
Final exam very unfair. Very unwilling to move marks even if its 1%. Not a bird course and their is too much information forced into one semester. Should be 1.0 credit level course. Stay away.
Great course! I really enjoyed it a lot. It also really introduces you to the basics of all the three religions. Great if you want to learn more about them. The assignment is ridiculously easy and the midterm and exam are just multiple choice. As long as you pay attention in class, you should do fine. The only bad thing is he brooks no dissent.
One of the most intelligent and articulate professors I have had at Carleton University, and I say that from the perspective of a student not even in this discipline. I took this course as an elective and was pleasantly surprised by how engaging Professor Crook made it. Got an extremely good mark in it due to how easy he made learning the material.
The class itself is very interesting and Mr. Crook is very passionate about the course. However, the exam was very unfair and extremely difficult. The exam is completely made up of trick questions and it is nearly impossible to succeed unless you memorize every sentence that he says.
Really passionate prof. Knows what he's talking about, but I found this course to be really hard. I definitely think this should have been a 1.0 credit course because there's just too much material for one semester. The exam was pretty unfair and difficult as well. Not at all what I expected!
Great prof, makes exams straightforward and if you study his slides and read over the textbook you can get an A.
Definitely passionate about religion. Argues a lot with students. The course was not easy, he uses textbook a lot. The exam was pretty hard, don't remember having covered the material.
Great prof, he explains everything in-depth and concisely. The essay was easy but the exams are tricky, be prepared
Engaging and funny professor. Easy to understand, and keeps things interesting.
In a history course at a secular university, I see no problem with his emphasis on naturalism. He manages to deal with the material sensibly and with an open mind, while remaining consistent in his presentation. Great choice of material. Eloquent and captivating orator. Strongly recommend.
I really liked this prof. I was shocked how low the class avg was. I'm guessing it's because it's 1st yr and most students don't know how to study yet? Use flashcards, people! It makes studying a breeze and you get to enjoy the lectures. Dr. Crook is so engaging, funny and pretty easy on the eyes. Really good Humanities elective.
Awesome Prof...Very interesting and fun lectures!(Need to go to class to do well on exams)
He is engaging and does not mind answering questions/being interrupted if someone doesn't understand - much better than a prof straight-lecturing. Pretty easy marker on assignments, hardest part was the map quiz. Essay was not difficult. If you go to his office for help, he'll give you lots of books to help you on your way!
HANDS DOWN. Best prof I've had at Carleton. Knows his stuff, is absolutely HILARIOUS and make going to class actually fun. For 2220- no need to purchase textbook, I did not and I finished with 86 in the course. He is a relatively easy marker, just know your stuff and he will reward you for that. No question he is the nicest, coolest, most fun prof.
Awesome teacher. He kept the class engaged and keeps the material interesting. His humor kept things really fresh. There is a lot of material but he does his best to highlight the key elements. He also distributed a list of key terms that we should know for the exam.
Dr. Crook is one of the best professors I've had. I've actually taken 4 different courses with him. His courses are in no way easy, but they are not impossible. If you put in the work, you should be fine. His exams are definitely tough - he is a scholar and training you to be one, so he doesn't give marks away, but he's very open to questions.
Knows his subject very well. However, does not know history at all and makes biased and inaccurate claims. If you're a history buff, you'll cringe and count his errors. Does not provide sources for the claims and does not like to be corrected on them. Very harsh marker, will seek out anything to take marks off. Not a bird course, better to avoid
I took Early Christianity with this prof. He is an extremely hard marker, he looks for things to deduct you on. Has a bit of a temper and not very helpful if you have questions. Knowledgeable about what he discusses.
Dr. Crook is fantastic! I took his class for what I assumed would be an easy elective. It wasn't easy, yet it ended up being my favourite class. He knows how to engage you and explains everything so clearly. Attendance is definitely mandatory if you want a good grade. He is hilarious and charismatic, you wont be bored! :)
Zeba was an excellent professor and there is a clear difference between the quality of his lectures and lectures by younger professors. He is a hard marker because he has taught you what you need to succeed on exams.
Easy going prof. Tries to make it fun. Clear explanations... Take this course!
I really wanted to enjoy this class but the prof made it impossible. He is very rude and won't accept any opinions unless it's his own. Hard marker - he even said in class that if you were doing well on an assignment/test he would try to find something he could deduct marks on. Don't take a class with this prof!!
I had so much fun with this course! Prof was fun to listen to & I looked forward to the lecture every week. Learned a lot, too! The field assignment's marking was hard, so my mark wasn't amazing, but I enjoyed the new experience. Definitely glad I took this course. Midterm/exam wasn't easy, but not too hard either. Study and you'll do fine.
I am a science and i took this course as my elective and turns out to be the most intresting course i have ever had specially when the prof is zeba crook. He is awesome, funny and very interesting. His lectures wont make you sleepy
The prof was great. I had a really good time in his lectures. He can make pretty good jokes from seemingly boring things. The course itself contains a ton of info. Prof. Crook is very knowledgable and can clarify things quite well. Very good in class discussions. There are some questions in the exams that will not be straight forward
Zeba is a good professor. The class is fun and all, but one downsize is the midterm and exam. For the midterm and exam you better be ready to do an extensive research on each religion( know the ins and outs)....f possible write down everything the prof says in class because it might just be on it. Be ready to work for your grade!!!
Such a clear professor. Only two exams and a paper.
Very charismatic and he makes the 3 hour lectures go by extremely fast! The course is difficult due to amount of material covered, but I did very well by just listening in class (not writing notes) and reading the textbook. Also the term paper is not like an essay its more of a answer questions and put it into paragraphs format so it was easy!
Professor Crook's class was excellent. I even enjoyed my assignments. The midterm was super easy, since I had been watching all of the lectures and doing my readings. The final was more difficult, partially due to content, partially due to falling behind on my lecture videos. He has an excellent presence and is super knowledgeable.
Only one paper, mid-term and a final
I really enjoyed his class! He is very interesting in his lectures, and his tests are fair. The paper is easy marks. I recommend taking his class. II learned a lot in his class. Very good teacher! Watch the lectures and do the readings and you will get a good grade.
I was really surprised how interesting the content of this course was. He provides extensive guidelines for the exams and assignment in the course outline as well as "learning lists" for the exams. Two "downsides": he ALWAYS goes the full three hours and he told us not to ask questions during the exam because no one would provide clarification...:/
very interesting course made interesting by the professor
Interesting class and teacher. Funny guy. Midterm was kinda tough, exam was a joke. The assignment was also really easy. Got an A without the textbook which was said to be essential
Good prof, explains the material in a fun way. An easy elective, just do the course reading and slides. easy midterm and final.
Fantastic teacher who knows how to make a 3 hour lecture funny and interesting. Clear expectations. Easy to learn from and someone who challenges his students to think outside of the class criteria by bringing in modern parallels. My only complaint was that his exam was unpleasant since he added in questions that he had covered only briefly.
Zeba does not know how to mark assignments and his tests are stupid. Worst teacher I have ever had.
Crook is a very interesting prof and is very well spoken. He has a great sense of humour and is clearly passionate about what he teaches, which makes the lectures all the more interesting. That being said, he does not post his slides, he is a brutally hard marker, his exams are killer and he refuses to do exam reveiws.
Lots of material covered in 3 hrs, exams are crazy hard unless you memorize everything he says in lectures.
Shows no respect for his students at all. Good prof I guess but incredibly disrespectful
Zeba is a 5 star lecturer. His 3.6 rating here is due to offended students I'd say. If you're a pious and sensitive religious person, don't take this class as there will be lots of shocking truth. I was in that boat, but I took it as enlightening rather than shocking. Beware though: exams have trick questions, multiple choice. Be prepared (2 yell)!
very easy course to be honest, easy A and would take again.
You'll have to work hard but his lectures are super interesting so it is totally worth it!
Zeba is a very professional prof. He gives specific and interesting lectures that broaden your mind on the subject of religion. I knew NOTHING about religion going into this class and I am so thankful for having learned so much about both the history and the practices. Sometimes the language he uses is challenging but overall so worth it.
Good lecturer, but difficult and unprofessional personality. Take his course but avoid any and all personal interaction with him.
Zeba Crook is easily the most disrespectful and immature Professors I have ever had the displeasure of encountering at Carleton. If I had a teacher evaluation form in front of me, I would honestly give him a very poor rating. I would strongly suggest against taking any course with him.
Most of the time doesn't know what he is talking about. Has no respect for religion. Dude why did you even do a doctorate in religion if you are not ready to respect religions. The most disrespectful person I have come across my whole academic life.
No respect. He'll never be able to understand what it means to be a respected professor.
AMAZING! Great speaker and knows how to give great lectures. Makes course objectives clear and easy while also having students learn a lot in his class. Don't know why there are some bad reviews. Probably the same person posting over and over. Highly recommend this prof
Professor Crook has been nothing short of a delight. His lectures are interesting and feel personal, and are easy to follow. He provides a very thorough syllabus and very clear instructions for tests and assignments. He's easy to contact outside class. The tests are hard and thorough. If you don't make the effort to study you won't pass them!
Zeba is a very passionate and knowledgeable professor there is no question about that. As well, the course breakdown is fair with online quizzes and well spaced out assignments. However, Zeba is a brutally difficult marker and expects strict adherence to assignment rubrics. He does not post lecture slides so purchasing the textbook is a good idea.
A pretty funny prof at times, but definitely keeps it interesting. Was worried he would be overly critical or pessimistic about the religions but he was very fair and respectful and unbiased. A very interesting class for sure, was great to learn about others' religions. Don't talk too loud during class, take good notes, and you're good.
AMAZING orator, every class is like a TedTalk. He is hilarious and has a great unbiased review of the facts of religions and teaches you to be critical. People who were offended need to understand that he is teaching facts, not doctrine. Need to study hard for the exams and follow the EXACT instructions/questions on the paper to do well.
The class is fairly interesting and very easy but the lectures are painful, he states nonsense claims with no real proof and I tried sending him a very kindly worded email asking if for the final project it would be ok if I substituted one thing for another and I said it was fine if I couldn't and his reply was so condescending, it turned me off.
Best prof. Knows his topic very well for this class and its an honour to learn from a great scholar of Christianity like him. Extremely fair and made a difficult and content heavy course very fun and easy to succeed in. He truly cares about his students learning and enjoying. Very easy to reach out to. These bad reviews confuse me. Zeba is a G
He managed to take a course which has so much material and make it easy and enjoyable for everyone. Great course. His lectures are amazing and cover everything important and truly keeps people engaged very well.
in the beginning I found his lectures to be very interesting. but near the end I found he was pretty rude and answered students questions very sarcastically. Don't think I'd take his course again.
His lectures are interesting and he knows a lot about what hes teaching. Grades really easy however you have to pass the exam to pass the course. Not hard tho all multiple choice
Very good prof, his lectures are well organized and he knows his stuff the only reason I wouldnt take a course with this prof again is because his evaluations arent that easy especially the exam as it was only easy to pass but not easy to do well in and its a must pass exam to pass the course.
Absolutely a terrible experience. For a first year course, the professor puts way too much stress and anxiety of his students. I followed all the guidelines for assignments and still didn't get the mark I deserved. I studied for exams by reading the book, watching lectures, reading notes, and got a low mark on the final. So frustrating.
I found his lectures interesting and easy to listen and didn't need to read the textbook. This class is made to pass and get a good mark but takes a lot of work to ace. About 10% of the questions on the exam and midterm are information only mentioned in the textbook. Overall, really easy and interesting. I would definitely take it again.
By far one of my favorite classes! The class was super interesting and I learned a lot! There's only one assignment, which was super fun to do, and an exam which was pretty easy if you study! Would definitely take this class again, love love love!
The class itself seemed easy. The prof was rude at times and nice other times. I'm not in first year but considering it was a first year course I found it to be pretty tough, only because of the final. You have to pass the exam to pass the course no matter what your mark in the rest of the course was. Just adds a lot of extra stress
Professor Crook was extremely knowledgeable and sincerely desired to interact with questions posed by students. He challenged us in our assignments to really learn and grow. If you demonstrate you're a dedicated student he has a lot of respect for you and wants to see you grow.
Honestly he truly does want everyone to pass his class. His course assignment was super fun and enlightening! The only truly hard part of the course was the exam. 180 multiple choice questions. You have to pass or you fail the course. His lectures were fun, and he was a great guy to talk too.
I took his class in my first year. By far one of the best profs I have ever had the pleasure to have. Professor Crook offered an interesting course workload with only one term paper. His sense of humour made it so much easier to get through the 3-hour lectures. 10/10 I rate my boy Zeba
Mr. Crook is a great professor that is understanding. As long as you watch your lecture videos and stay on top of the work you will get an A
Crook is easily the most unprofessional professor I have ever encountered. He cannot separate his bias from what he teaches and the assessments he assigns. You will literally cringe at the inappropriate comments and analogies he makes about religions. I've met plenty of respectful atheists and he's definitely one of those arrogant angry ones.
Great guy, great professor and passionate about the source material. Dealing with religion can be all over the place and difficult especially with not a whole lot of prior knowledge about the course material. Class can be confusing and difficult but overall he keeps you engaged and interested
Very smart and knowledgable about his field. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Has the ability to teach content heavy material very well and enthusiastically.
This professor made the course interesting and he was nice to me, probably generally nice to all students, but there is a hard to not notice disrespect he shows toward religion. He inserts his bias into the course, and many illogical, cringey statements. I'm disappointed, and would recommend a more respectful professor for any religion course.
Be warned that you will mostly be discussing Islamism over any other religion. I would say mostly 90% of the course is guided towards Islamism over Judaism and Christianity. Very tough grader as you will see that he only cares about his opinion of religion over yours. Prepare to receive unrealistic marks on your papers and experience extreme bias
For a first year class the work load is more than a computer science course. A very tough grader when it comes to correcting essays. If you care about your grade take it with someone else.
Harsh marker ... super unrealistic. Does not change grades even if you are right . Does not give grades between a 65 and 80 .. makes no sense
This prof is honestly one of the worst prof's I've ever had. He's an extremely hard marker, way too many expectations for a first year class and he's really bias when it comes to some religions. He's not professional at all and I would advise you NOT to take his class. You'll regret it. He will belittle you and when you challenge him GOODLUCK!!!!!
At one point, I forgot that it was a first-year course, thats how difficult he made this course. He sent us multiple emails during reading week (which profs are not supposed to be doing). I worried more about this course than the actual global pandemic that's currently going on.
He told students due to COVID-19, we could work together on the exam. When we did he sent us a nasty email, saying we could be expelled and accused us of an academic offence. Had to write a statement & meet with the Dean. He is rude one minute then turns around and is really nice the next. This class stressed me out far too much for an elective.
I don't understand the hate on here toward Zeba, I think a lot of people misconstrue his words. He is very passionate about the subject matter and tries to get students to rethink the idea of religion from an academic's perspective. Tests were open book and assignments were short. Put in the work and don't overthink things and its an easy A
Quite lecture heavy but he always stays on topic and doesn't go on tangents which is nice. That said, he makes a big point about how the class is about history and facts, but then goes and gives assignments were you literally have to discuss your personal opinion which is contrary to the whole point of religious studies. His marking is quite odd.
I will admit at first this class was daunting, my first assignment I received a 40% and panicked. I found that by STRICTLY following his assignment instructions, keeping an eye out for emails revolving around assignments and emailing him with any questions this class can be a easy pass!
I found the class challenging, but really enjoyed having Professor Crook. Having taken his RELI 2220 course as an elective, I can say that I remember most of what was taught and it has really put me ahead in my Humanities degree.
Maybe my favourite prof. Super genuine, he will help you as much as you need and is very prompt with answering emails.
Although he's not an unintellectual prof, his bias and demeaning nature makes it hard to respect him, and his snide comments make you cringe every second of his long lectures. You learn from a textbook he's written and the tests are mostly short essays where you need to follow his directions EXACTLY to be graded above a 50%.
Can be kind of condescending but if you know the material the exam is an easy A, no surprises
WORST UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE IN FOUR YEARS! steer clear unless you want to have lunch with the Dean. And they said COVID was stressful LOL.
Do not take this man's classes. It worst academic experience of my life. His text is poorly written and he is hard on students, see previous comments. I had a mental health breakdown to receive an A+ in a first year class. Previous reviews were deleted and his score went up, many students warned about him.
I took this as an elective, it was an asynchronous course. Overall the lectures are very interesting and intriguing, though the slides don't have much text so you have to take a lot of notes. textbook is useful but not absolutely mandatory, though very useful. The assignments are not challenging at all if you pay attention. great experience online
He's a good lecturer but that's about it. Please be aware that this class is more about excessive scripture interpretation than it is about history. I found his instructions and tests often confusing, and he cannot be bothered to clarify. He seems to prefer being condescending to his students vs helping them succeed.
If you pay attention and follow his instructions clearly, you will do just fine. Very knowledgeable Strong tendency to cherry pick on how the NT is presented, favouring points to disprove or show weaknesses in the NT but does not show strengths. The goal of this course is to critically examine the NT but fails to present both sides. BEWARE!
This is a pretty easy class if you stay on-top of the lectures and pay close attention to the assignment rubric- bad writing is fine just follow rubric. The 2 assignments are 10% each ( during summer, may be different during the year) of final grade and majority of the grade is the 4 tests-open book, no exam. Easiest A I will ever get in uni.
He's kinda rude? :(
Honestly this prof seemed very nice from the syllabus. However, when I had difficulty with an assignment he made me feel stupid for asking questions. He picks on specific students and makes them feel worthless. He gave me an F because my bibliography bumped my word count up and made me go over the word count by 47 words... anyways! do not recommend
I had this teacher for an in-person class. I was really excited to take it, as this was a topic I was naturally interested in, but he was unkind to students who didn't understand instructions outright or if they needed clarification on things. Would not recommend.
The course is pre-recorded videos that you can watch anytime you want. Pretty easy class, the lectures and the readings material are the same, no need to do both. 4 multiple choice quizzes and 2 short reflection assignments. No mid-term, no paper. Overall great prof, very flexible with deadlines.
Stay far away
Reading the textbook is important as there is a lot in it that is not covered by the lectures. Prof is entertaining, and seems interested in the content he is teaching. Content is mostly memorization based, so can be easier if you're someone with a good memory!
Straightforward course, do the lectures, take notes and you'll ace the quizzes and final exam (all multiple choice). Had one written essay about religion in the news that was pretty easy to get done and feedback was on point from the professor.
This guy will post lecture slide with incomplete information, His philosophy is: "UniVeRsiTy StUdENts ShOuld bE CApabLe Of ListiNing WhilE takIng nOtEs aT THe SAme TimE". If you cant write and listen at the speed of human speech, i do not recommend, if this is your extra class, no!, as an engineer you wont have time to read HIS book, so you fail.
Dr. Crook has amazing lectures. His midterm & final were MC but you need to read the textbook very well as well as focus on what he notes during lectures. His exams weren't hard, but I would say that they required memorization to ace them. 1 assignment, easy marks if you answer each question given. He is so flexible with deadlines.
Professor Crook's RELI1710 class is a straightforward one. Attend the lectures, take detailed notes, and you'll do well on the multiple-choice exams. I found unstuck AI and the textbook to be helpful study tools alongside the lectures. Overall, a manageable course if you stay on top of the material.
bruh......
The class was online asynchronous. The tests were online, open-book, and if you read the textbook, super straightforward. I didn't watch any of the modules because most of the information is already in the textbook. The textbook is easy to scan through and find key terms.
4 Quizes, possibly the most simple course I've ever taken! Even with no prior religous knowledge he makes it easy!
Easiest class I've ever taken, the content itself is very interesting as well. He did a fantastic job with the organization of the material; you leave the class feeling very knowledgeable.
