Have to study to do well but gives very interesting lectures. Great teacher.

He's an amazing teacher, the best I've had in college. You have to work your ass off but you'll learn so much.

One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. You have to study a lot but he's a great professor. Make sure you highlight everything he says when he goes over the readings in class.
hard class especially to be a 200 level. learned alot, but he is so self-righteous. wacth out for those 2 page papers--there ARE right answers!
very hard class, but you'll learn how to study. Listen closely in every lecture, he'll tell you all the answers.
Very hard teacher, but you learn a hell of alot. He is awfully pompous, but he knows what he is doing, so that kinda makes up for it. His classes are worth taking, but be prepared to work your tail off!
HARD teacher- it is a really interesting but very hard class. You have to do question cards and a lot of reading for this class. Be prepared to work you butt off
Very Hard
i liked the class at first but then hated it b/c of the work load, and the fact that i had so much more to do in other classes for my major, and then to add on to all that i had a bunch of rel. homework. hes nice, but dont take if not majoring in rel.
Very hard. Does not explain information very clearly. Too much work for an introductory class that counts as a humanity.
Ok this teacher sucks big time! His lectures are so boring and he requires way too much out of his students for a entry level humanities credit. Take if interested in reading 4 books and about 25 E-Reserves.
I would rather stick hot needles all over my body then go to this class. I must have played 1000 games of mash by MYSELF. If you enjoy reading about the Dalai Lama's Potala and 25 page articles for one night's assigment...be my guest. BORING AS HELL!!!
Oh Zeff. It was definitely a hard class, but it made you think more than anything. The papers were a bit troubling, just because there was indeed a right answer. But he was very willing to help outside of class. Good guy, but not at all easy.
Wow, hardest class I've ever taken. But I've never become more intersted in the Dalai llama. Zeff is so smart, and though the class is tedious, and the reading is more tedious, I'm glad I took it. In fact, I'm taking him again. You're glad u take it after

class is difficult, yes, but the subj. is interesting so its worth it. theres no textbk so expect to read a lot of e-reserves. tests arent bad if you study (detailed study guides). a few papers (all less than 3 pgs). zeff is really helpful & approachable.
He's a great teacher...his class is very hard but he will always help you out if you don't understand something...very interesting class
Whoa...3.6 SENIOR GPA just took a Fu@<!^% nose dive for ONE sorry ass humanities credit. Zeff is a GREAT guy no doubt but unless you have your SH!^ together and I mean TOGETHER you WILL fail. Other than that Zeff is very cool.
Great, easy class
It's not an easy class, don't take it if youre not really interested in it. But he's a brillant teacher whos passionate about his subject and theres nothing more important than that. Its a lot of reading but the rest of these ratings are from lazy ****s. Zeff rules
I didnt think it was that hard. He makes everything very straight forward. This class opens your mind and is a great humanitites. Zeff is awesome, well informed, approachable. Overall take this if you have the chance.
Zeff rules! He is so smart it'll scare you, but very chill too. The material is tough but worth the time and energy...His passion for the subject spreads
Great professor, interesting (for the most part)class.
Skeptical @first but ended up loving Zeff. Chill, smart and helpful guy. Class material very hard but all u have to do is take notes constantly in class and u don't have to do all the reading- skim some of it. Tests/papers are okay. Go to class! Also he loves in-class participation.
very interesting class, he's really relaxed. two tests, and a couple quizes, and a question card due every week. you have a couple of papers to write. easy.
Worst teacher ever!
Zeff does require work, but you definitely learn enjoyable, intriguing material. Usually courses involve 1-2 2page papers, 1 term paper (7-10pgs), a couple of quizzes, a midterm, and final. Question cards are due every Thursday. May be a little more reading that one is used to for an intro level course. Can, at times, be pompous (in relation to his academic history and abilities) and can be prone to alpha male syndrome, but is a very nice, helpful teacher.

Challenges students to think beyond normal boundaries and expects certainty in your work.
A tough class but I learned a lot. Not for the lazy student. He's a nice guy.
i don't think 230 is right, it is the buddhism class though. He's a really great professor! If you study and do the reading in the books to do papers on you'll do fine in the class. however, you cannot be slack or you wont' get a good grade! He makes buddhism easy to understand and overrall is a fantastic professor! take him if you get the chance!
he assigns quite a bit of reading, but i didn't do a lot of it and made good grades in the class. if you put atleast some obvious thought into the question cards and the short papers you're bound to get a good grade. not too difficult, cool guy. takes attendence but hearing the lectures are pretty necessary cause he tests on them.
Nice guy and decent class. has a tendency to get a bit boring. Don't go tired and avoid TR classes (they last soo long). The material is interesting and the workload is completely tolerable. Lecture is easy to follow and you can get away without reading. He gives really clear study guides.
Try to avoid a TR class - they last forever. This class was extremely interesting and I learned a great deal, but it didn't come easy. There is a LOT of required reading, and the tests are difficult. He will help you a lot though, during office hours, and he doesn't choose favorites in class. GREAT professor, not an easy A.
This class was very hard to me, but I did pass. I thought the material was hard to understand. For some reason this course is like taking a phil course. The paper is very hard to right, but I did get a good grade. He is a good professor.
LOVE HIM!! Think he's hott in different way!! Great professor, knows his information!! Kind of hard tests, but is really helpful if you need him.
He's a really interesting guy. There's a TON of reading, but it's interesting. Don't wait until it's almost test time to try to catch up on reading-it's too hard. The ? cards he assigns are great- they were my favorite part of the class. He gives really good feedback, but you have to ask philosophical ?s to get a check plus. tests are hard. STUDY!
Really cool guy...interesting class but can get a little boring. He knows his material really well and you can tell he enjoys teaching it.I've had him for 2 semesters and gotten an A both times without that much work.
Zeff is an amazing professor which is why I took so many of his classes. He provokes great conversation and if you actually participate and TALK, it makes his classes even that much better. If you want an easy A, avoid him, but if you actually want to learn--he's your man! Plus, I think he's really hot!
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken, After doing all the reading and reading it again the stuff we when over in class just went strait over my head he is a good teacher but not for that class
Bjerken sucks. I was looking forward to taking this class and it is extremely way too hard to be an elective. He truly enjoys it but goes way too in depth for a 101 course.
Bjerken is very interested in what he is teaching and adores class participation. He has a great sense of humor as well. He is very willing to help on papers and in preparation for tests. His tests are not hard as long as you study. Question cards may be a pain in the butt, but they are easy and bump your grade up.
Professor Bjerken is amazing. He enjoys teaching the class which in turn makes the class very enjoyable. It's very interesting but requires studying. homework assignments affect your grade so you cannot be slack. but overall one of my favorite classes. Great professor!
Professor Bjerken is very passionate about what he teaches. Attendance is pretty much required if you're going to pass tests and understand the material. I took him for 50 minutes at a time and I don't think I could have been in there for an hour and a half since all he does is lecture. Enjoys participation so speak up. Tests are hard!
Great professor! He was really passionate and it made me want to learn it. He can seem kind of arrogant sometimes but he is a nice guy. Really helpful and wants you to do well in the class. Takes essay part of tests really seriously and there is a LOT of reading... and you need to do it in order to understand the course. But great guy!
101 was not a cakewalk. Bjerken is an interesting lecturer, more so for more 'mature' students (i.e., upperclassmen who actually care). The nature of an intro RELS course is problematic at best, and Bjerkin does a VERY good job of making it accessible thru varied readings and movies. But you pay the price for this in the hard work you must do
Loved this class. Need to read, come to class, and participate; if that's not your thing, you probably wouldn't find this class fun. He is an AMAZING prof; really cares and responds with enthusiasm. So nice. Really helpful, but asks you to try and really think during lectures and discussion which is fun.
This man is brilliant. He inspires students with his enthusiasm and knowledge. He isn't the easiest teacher, but it's 150 percent worth it. If you study and pay attention (as with any class) you'll be fine.
I loved taking Prof Bjerkens' class even if it was my most difficult class. He is pretty funny and his lectures/discussions are interesting. I don't recommend taking this class if you plan to blow off reading assignments or skip class though.
Zeff is awesome. I've taken several classes with him and he is extremely challenging as a professor however he is passionate and great at what he does. If you want to slack off, don't take any of his classes, your grade will suffer. 201 is challenging and I don't recommend it if you aren't a major. However, BJERKEN IS AWESOME.
Bjerken is an excellent teacher but he requires a lot of effort on the student's part. If you need any help he is more than willing to meet with you and discuss how you can improve your grade. Don't take his class if you want an "Easy A" or want to slack off.
He is definitely challenging! You have to go to class and keep up with the readings but its worth it. He makes you think and is also very helpful with improving your writing. Going to class is not hard though because he is quite nice to look at :)
My favorite teacher at the college so far. His class was definitely not easy, but if you attend all the classes and keep up with weekly readings- it becomes very interesting and worth it. I believe he permanently changed the way i think critically and I learned SO much for a 100 level course.
My favorite professor at the College-gives multiple examples when lecturing, even more helpful during office hours, but make sure you read the assignments! He loves class discussion, and might call on you. Only allows three absences, but his classes are always interesting.
If you're not from the south and you aren't very religious you are easily lost and confused. he is helpful if you have questions by email or office hours. if you give a dumb answer he gives you an odd look, its kind of funny to see. but it is a very hard class for 101 and a very tough grader. i personally hate this subject, it bores me.
Very nice guy, obviously very informed about the subject matter. If you like to read and put in a lot of hours go for it. This class was interesting the first few weeks. He just is such a hard grader, and his tests are so hard. Nice guy, but not an easy professor. I wouldn't take him again.
I loved the subject matter of this class, hated Bjerken. His quizzes are tough and the midterm is even worse. He expects one specific answer & even if you defend your point well, you still lose. He was always rude to a few of the students in class as well. I wouldn't recommend taking him for any religion class unless you like A LOT of reading.
Professor Bjerken is awesome. Hands down one of the best professors at the college. He is very passionate about his subject. The lectures are long, but he makes them interesting. Word of caution: If you want an easy A, this is not your sort of class. A easy grade is obtainable if you put in the time and effort. Attendance is mandatory!
Even though the class was not the easiest, he was a great teacher. Loved the class material and his enthusiasm for the subject.
My fav class all semester--wish I was majoring in Religious Studies because of this guy. Lectures give clear information, assignments ALWAYS returned with feedback which is helpful, tests and essays are challenging but in a good way. SO MUCH READING--understandably so & worth it, but used up my 300 free printing pages :( Take this class. Awesome.
Bjerken is awesome! I'm not religious myself and he has made me switch to a religious studies minor! He is super helpful during office hours and is accommodating to SNAP students. TAKE HIS CLASS, there is a lot of reading, but the overall experience and what you take away from the class is worth it
Bjerken is a good professor, but he means business. No extensions or sympathy, no matter what. This class was extremely challenging. He gives good feedback, but in doing so rips your paper apart. Take him if you want to learn a lot, but you'll have to be a grownup! Very "tough love" kind of professor.
Took this as a general ed- big mistake. Instead of focusing on religions, different rituals, etc. we focused on the "substance of faith" and "making the strange seem familiar." We read a total of 4 book, had nightly assignments, read articles, and wrote 3 papers- all based off Bjerken's opinion. Test and exam were unbelievably hard. Not recomended
Good lord this class is difficult. He's very informed on what he is teaching, but if you care about your GPA and are just looking for a gen ed, avoid him at all costs.
I'm a bio major but this religion class was by far my most involved class for this semester. It wasn't SUPER easy but an A is definitely obtainable. He's very clear and detailed about the material we cover. Nice guy, interesting class. Only thing I can complain about is the mass readings assigned, RIP to my 300 free pages.
Bjerken is awesome but don't take for an easy A. There are a lot of reading assignments but they're interesting. Tests and essays were difficult but he gives feedback on all assignments which is really helpful. He likes when you participate and his lectures are great, take this class it's so worth it!
This is NOT an easy class. I would never recommend this guy. Imagine the hardest exam you've ever taken and quadruple it. His exams are unnecessarily difficult and he grades less on actual knowledge and more on his personal opinion. The essay's are barely easier but he critiques by shredding your confidence. If you value your GPA do not take him.
Prof Bjerken is lighthearted and actually enjoys what he teaches. There are some points where you feel like it drags on because he talks the whole 1 hour and 15 minutes. Occasional documentary watching. There were four papers throughout the semester so be ready to write. Yes, bring your laptop bc there is ton of info you need. Exams are tough!
Zeff is a good guy and the stuff he is teaching is very interesting however it is made gruesome because he teaches it. He wants students to see in his point of view, only. You will be graded basically on how well you can agree with Zeffs point of view. If you are interested in Buddhism read books, dont take this course.
If you are expecting to just sit and learn Buddhism, then think again. There are readings due every class period and if you don't read the material the next day is harder to comprehend. Exams require lots of writing, including knowing the text of an important Buddhist text and explaining in detail.
Gives pages of reading every night. Lots of reflection cards for homework which is an easy A but papers are difficult to write. Tests and exams are long and difficult, with multiple essays. Thought this class would be an easy A but I'm not doing well. Don't take it.
I can tell that Zeff is a likable guy, however his style of teaching is quite hard to find meaningful or interesting. It is clear that he teaches this class to teach what he likes talking about and the concepts he finds important about religion . His test taking style is high stress. This is not at all worth taking as an elective .
He definitely cares about the topic, however, grades are largely subjective and based on how well you can come up with what he wants to hear. 30+ page readings are due for every class with reflections cards on the topics. The courseload was the heaviest I've ever had... 20 readings, 3 books, 2 quizzes, 4 papers, 15 reflections, a midterm, and final
Dr. Bjerken was a great teacher, just had a LOT of reading outside of class. However, the discussions were interesting and I did learn a lot. You do have to participate though; he will call you out if you don't. The graded assignments are hard and the essays have complicated topics. My best advice is to go to his office hours as much as you can.
Dr. Bjerken grades harshly on essays. He assigned 4 books and 16 electronic readings for a 3.5 month long course! 2 of the books we had to read at the same time. His expectations are ridiculous, he's not even considering other course work that's required of student. A RELS course should always be an easy A in my opinion. He's a last resort option.
You have to read quite a bit in this class but you can easily make a B if you complete all the reading cards and pay attention in class. The lectures get boring but the material/films you watch are pretty interesting. Everyone is encouraged to engage in class discussions and makes up a small percent of their grade.
Prof Bjerken is a passionate guy and loves to teach about Buddhism but this class was a waste of my time. I did learn a lot... but the amount of reading is unnecessary. The time and energy I put into this class would translate to at least an A- for the majority of professors at this school. Way too much work for a humanity.
Bjerken was very opinionated and rude. Even with COVID he will not accommodate you and will fail you if you fall sick and miss class. Bjerken was also very biased I didnt think that is okay in a rels course? If your opinion doesnt fit his you will fail his class. 10/10 never again.
Outstanding teacher. Combination of readings, movies, professor's personal knowledge and class lecture discussion provide students an excellent understanding of the subject and a great learning experience. I look forward to taking another class with him. Important to do the reading assignments and go to class.
He's a good professor but his class is very lecture-heavy, its hard to keep focus at times. Also, class participation is very important to him but he asks really deep in-depth questions that are difficult to analyze. He was good about meeting with me outside of class to help me. Exams were open note, but be prepared for lots and lots of reading,
You read so much and your opinion on things never ends up mattering. He talks on end about his own personal opinions, but rarely encourages room for disagreement. His essays are graded rigidly and has an emphasis on dense writing. Attendance is very strict. Despite all of this, assignments are quick and easy.
Dr.Bjerken's 101 course is what introduced me to the study of religion and brought me to become a minor. There are a variety of interesting readings in this course and every class period is outlined clearly with different discussion points. Students are always encouraged to share their opinion and all the tests are open note. Must apply yourself!!
An annoying professor who pinpoints every little detail. The reading amount is too much, and his lectures are draining. Don't take this class with him, he can be rude sometimes.
This is my third time taking Bjerken. He cares so much about religious studies and expanding the knowledge of it. Yes, there is a lot of reading and tedious feedback, but it's all because He wants students to do well. Through his classes, I've become a better writer and analyzer. If you want to learn and grow as a student, you should take his class
Personally, not my style of class. Was a larger class of about 70 students, and I didn't feel comfortable talking in class, so I could only get an 80% on attendance/participation. Very tough grader on foreign concepts. Also no technology allowed AT ALL in class. But does allow notes on quizzes/tests.
Literally the hardest class for no reason. Hardest grader ever.. do not expect an A. With the amount of reading and work I put into this class I would expect a much better grade. This guy can talk for hours saying the same thing over and over again.
Only take this course if you are genuinely interested in Hinduism and Buddhism. This class covers two humanities requirements, but the work feels like two classes in one. Readings have to be printed out before class and are usually pages long. You're graded by how much you speak in class. Take really good notes from lecture and tests will be easy.
Took this excited thought it would be really interesting and easy … was completely opposite. You can do all the studying and ridiculous amount of readings and assignments really well and he will find a reason to give you atleast a letter lower than you deserve. If your gpa is important to you don't bother with this class. Super unfair
