Great character and personality. I like they way he thinks and the way he has structured our class.
This is the first time this course is being thought but his trying his best. The exams on the other hand are quite difficult. Overall he does his best to teach his students. He's full of potential energy to enlighten you with NEURONS!!!!
As his first attempt to teach neurobiology he put a great deal of effort into the class. He is great at keeping you awake especially during the morning hours!
Dr. Zen is a professor who is always there for his students. He provides motivation and enthusiasm like no other professor, trust me. The effort he put into this neurobiology class is greatly appreciated by his students.
Awesome teacher, and will definitly keep you awake. A great motivator with a lot of compassion for his students. He is also very flexible about his grading.
Hmmm.
Dr. Zen is an awesome professor. He is extremely helpful to his students. Everything is available online notes, quizzes, email, discussion, making contacting him or other students easy. The quizzes are not hard they're straight from the notes & fair. :)
If you are taking Neurobiology just to take it, think it twice. Trust me on this because I earn a C and it hurted by GPA big time. You'll probably enter optomistic but at the end you'll be disappointed.
Dr. Faulkes is hot - He is a good professor, very helpful. However, with Dr. Faulkes you have to really work to earn your grades! I loved his class.
i think he's an awesome teacher.....very down to earth and very witty. highly reccomend.
Lots of energy, tries hard to help students understand the subject. However, his quizzes are very hard, you have to take a quiz every week. Not an easy class-very challenging
Very enthusiastic. Makes biology alot easier!!!!!
PLEASE TEACH 1402
Zen is a very good instructor. I liked the way he taught his students and he is always willing to help us. You can tell he cares about his students and he loves doing what he does. He is awesome!
His notes were good and really helpful. His tests were a little harder than expected but manageable.
He's too hyper, but very intellectual!
easy course, only hard quiz questions
Excellent professor! Keep up the good work. Some other professors should be more like you!
Zen teaches very clearly and to the point
i think dr zen is a great professor! i really liked his teaching techniques. I really appreciated that he would make wedn. tutorials for us even though he didnt have to. Thanks Dr. Zen!!! =)
Lots of enthusiasm and cheesy jokes, but its all good. I like the wednesday reviews also.
His lecture notes are very helpful. They serve as an outline for the class and he is very good at sticking to them. So, read the book, read the notes and you should do well. P.S. on assignments make sure you follow the grading rubrics he gives you.
Dr. Zen is a very good instructor, I would definetly recommend him. He is very enthusiastic about science, and it shows. If you study and attend class, you'll do fine.
Dr Zen has, w/out a doubt, been one of the best teachers I've had thus far. His approach to conveying information is unlike any other, and I say the only professor to take Bio with his definately him!!!
Faulkes, although very enthusiastic about science, was very unhelpful. I asked to meet with him a number of times, but would not have time. And when he did, he would not listen to any of my problems. I had to count on the other tutoring professors to help
Fantabulous professor!! That he is extremely enthusiatic and passionate about the subject makes the lectures come alive all on their own, adds a special element of curiosity and genuinine interest for me. For those who say he's hard...bleh! Just study! :)
He knows what he's talking about. Not hard at all but quizes can contain some tricky questions, just study. Otherwise I found his class interesting and he's enthusiastic about it.
zen is a really good teacher. i highly recommend for anyone to take his class. he makes biology not so bad.
Very entertaining!!
He was an ok professor. His notes were helpful, and I liked the fact that we were able to know what our grade was and what it could be. The only thing I have a problem with is his unwillingness to help. I sent him a personal email asking for his help, and his only reply was "no sympathy here." =(
Very cool professor, was able to teach the big idea concepts of the class. Very entertaining, awsome lectures that included funny pictures of Bands, and other usefull pics
he is very mean and rude..he mostly lookin to humor you with his not so funny jokes ....but hey its biology..of course it's gonna be boring
Dr. Zen is the best teacher of BIOL 1401, by far!
Zen is a very cool teacher. The only thing is that he is very methodical when evaluating the web page.
His neurobiology class is very interesting and fun! Excellent class to take for advanced hours, he makes learning fun, it's easy if you go to class and trust me it's not one of those classes you dread going to, it's one you don't want to miss! Fabulous teacher!
Great class, very fun.
Crocodile Hunter tendencies
Zen was a very understanding instructor. If you have a problem he was willing to discuss it and try to help. I Highly recommend him as an instructor.
Very charismatic and makes learning biology fun...he is into his lectures and thats what makes it interesting! his energy wakes you up in the morning and has a sense of humor that would be sure to wake you up.
I must admit that on the 1st day of class, I didnt like Mr. Faulkes because he was going to make me work. In the end, I found that he was a very cool professor to say the least and help me to utilize my other qualities and expand my horizons when it comes to making and listening to presentations.
THE BEST BIO PROF. EVER ! He likes to be called Dr.Zen though remember that!
hes easy just go to class and sit there do nothing but when it comes to the quizzes just lok on at the notes he made its all there
Hates to give people A's. His quizzes are open notes, yes, but the information you are quizzed on is often not in the notes, and he tells you that. Brags that he cannot get perfect scores on his own quizzes. An easy class to get a B in. An 89.9 will not round to an A. Too many people had A's so he dreamed up an assignment to bring us downn.
Zen is a great prof when it comes to making his students understand concepts instead of pure memorization. I don't think that his assignments are hard at all, just come to class. His teaching style is unique and I'll guarantee that you'll like his humour. He's so funny and just seems like the type of person you could go out and have a drink with!!!
He thinks he's better than anyone. He is so arrogant that he can't even stand himself.
If you want to understand the material just pay attention to his lectures, its all there. He was very clear and enthusiastic when he presented his lectures. He was also very wiling to try new teaching methods to improve class performance.
He is a very enthusiastic teacher. He is always making jokes. He is willing to discuss your concerns and he is so nice he have us pies and cookies the last day of class!
There's absolutly no excuse for failing this class. The quizes are online and open note! His lectures are interesting and he tries really hard to engage the students. It is difficult to get an A though~ He's a pretty OK guy!
took him spring 06 quizzes are online, nad u think its gona be easy, but quizzes are difficult even though they are open notes!! not final or midterm!! no class attendance required!
Zen Faulkes. What can i say about this guy... he keeps the class energetic and alive and this is one of those types of classes that you defanetly wont fall asleep in. Although when its all said and done, i kind of regret taking this professor cuz he is a bit hard. I came out with a C :( and i did try most of the time. P.S - hes from Canada ....
Funny and pretty cool!
I love going to his class, his very funny, enthusiastic & energetic...always keep the class awake, and his notes are so organized & so will yours :) and the Best Part is that there is no such thing as Mid-Terms, or Finals for his class, only open book online quizzes!! However, a lot of his questions in the quizzes are not even mention in class.
Just watch out with his online quizzes though...they can be the reason why you failed the class...
This is a class you should avoid. The assignments and quizzes are always surprising and you have to beat your brain up in order to answer them within the small time limit given on webct. Most of the assignments make you feel like you have no choice but to get them wrong.
Interesting professor and subject. At the beginning, I hated the course. Now, as we are getting to the end, I love the course. Dr. Zen's teaching style is unconventional and definitely animated. As a visual learner, it is great for me because he has pictures and animations, and he acts out everything. Knows the material on a high level. Great prof.
Neurobiology is a relatively young subject. However, Dr. Zen is extremely knowledgable about it and keeps up to date with recent publications and news in the field. Neurobiology is not an easily taught subject because it is very complex but I believe Dr. Zen does an excellent job and any other professor would have a difficult timem teaching the sub
Dr. Zen is really funny and a great professor. His class is like a "marathon" as he likes to call it and it helps you keep up with the knowledge. He is really peppy and will keep you interested in his lecture. I loved his class. I'm an English major and thought I would hate Biology, but his class changed my mind. I highly recommend Dr. ZEN!!!
Dr. Zen is quirky in the best sense of the word. Class was always intriguing, and Doc Zen always had a 'wacky' metaphor to add some clairvoyance to the tangled mess that biology can be. He also provides students with a ton of resources, so much so that a having a text is pretty much arbitrary. Just keep up with the quizzes and notes.
Dr. Zen is a little wierd but very nice and his class is intresting. No work at all just online quizzes they are kinda hard so just go over the notes before and you'll be fine.
Dr. Zen is extremely upbeat when delivering his colorful and animated lectures!Don't misunderstand though, the vast material is extensive and does require your full attention! The work is all completed online, but you will be timed-so know your stuff!
When enrolling I thought this was going to be a very difficult class, but Zen proofed me wrong. Quizzes given daily, assignments bi-weekly, clicker questions, and no tests.... all of this online. He integrated a new system where it is recorded and is of help if you are absent, don't recommend missing many classes though. Great PROF!!
entertaining. class is taught with many learning tools. via internet, clicker, quizzes, voice recorder, lecture, assignments, etc.
Dr. Zen's contemporary yet unique and personal teaching style, not to mention his sense of humor makes him one of the best educators within our university.
I don't recommend this class for those premeds that like taking easy classes and attaining perfect A's. You will actually learn in this class. Nonetheless, great instructor, challenging class, and an overall different experience (class was taken almost in a two fold manner: in class and through blackboard) Class recommend to those who like learning
exams are online. Refered to as "ASSIGNMENTS" but are exams none the less. Recomend creating a group and don't miss classes if can be helped. Excellent professor though.
Doesn't like to be called Dr. Faulkes, Call him Zen! You mess up on the quizzez you are doomed, but a great profeessor when it comes to presenting information, you WILL learn.
ZEN it's a very good professor! He explains very well, and even if you don't like biology you will enjoy his class because he is very funny when he lectures. Even if you don't do very well on the online quizzes you still past because of the grade system he has. I highly recommend this professor!
You need to go to lecture to get the clicker points. Everything else is online, no exams, just quizzes. They aren't hard if you look over his online notes. He's SUPER nice and his lectures are enjoyable. I got a 100 in the course.
Good professor that isn't afraid to chew you out in all your mistakes in an assignment. Class helps but assignments are not impossible to do. Overall I recommend him for bio writing.
Zen Faulkes is a good professor and really gives it a 100% in his lectures. Although there is homework every week and blog, it is a challenging course that I would recommend.
A good professors but the daily quizzes that come with this class starting on sundays which is actually a fun day for students arent fun at all! Some of the assignments are challenging, but you will find out ;) Overall Dr.Zen is a good professor
Had him for Neuro. Just pay attention, keep up with your assignments/quizzes and you'll be fine. He's a good guy who cares about his students.
Very good professor he is very passionate in his work and i like how that reflects on us. He expects us to go beyond our capabilities and challenges in areas i never thought i would do good in. Thank you Professor Zen...
Go to class. Clicker points count, and daily quiz points add up quickly. Be diligent about checking blackboard for notices, updates and important information. Really enjoyed the class and the majority of the material covered.
Great professor, great lectures, great information. As long as you're good about keeping up with things, the class isn't hard.
Content of Neurobiology was great. Seriously keep up with the assignments in class. Having no exams was great, though. Professor was enthusiastic!
Dr. Faulkes is helpful and clear with what he wants for his students to present for their seminar. He doesn't want any powerpoint or computer presentations. All he wants is visuals to help you support your presentation. Your grade is based off on peer review, his review, and a 5 min ignite ppt. Overall, this course isn't hard at all.
Not a very good professor. His assignments are unclear and will often leave you asking more questions than answered. He's an interesting fellow though, but that's about it. His grading methods are ridiculously meticulous and harsh, bordering the point of absurdity. If you can take this class with some one else, do it. It's not worth the stress.
Worst class ever. Professor is useless. He does not answer your questions correctly, and does not tell you how to do the assignments. Also, If you get a 79.99%, that is not a B according to him! If you can take Dr. Dirrgl, do it. This is not worth the stress.
I took neurobio with him this fall, he teaches bio differently from other professors, it's much more interesting, best part is no exams to study, so dont really need to stress out too much. prepare for the HW. Some require you to read a research paper.
took Dr.Z neurobio fall 2013& I really learn a lot about neuro. Dr.Z has no exams, you have 6 assignments which take up 60% of your grade, try your best at them& attend class because you have to answer clicker questions I got an A, but if you have a 89.9% he will not give you the A, you have to work hard just like the rest of the Biology courses
Show up everyday and do clicker questions. Spend 2-3 hours prepping for timed quizzes, and always review quizzes that are unlimited time. He's very unorganized but very knowledgeable. But do you work and you'll get a A
I do not recommend neurobiology. The assignments usually had typos and were difficult to understand. He was usually pretty harsh and rude with his grading and didn't offer constructive criticism or explain why an answer was incorrect. The class isn't difficult but it isn't worth taking. I would have rather taken a more organized course.
Great class, really fun. Youu have to go everyday pretty much because he wants really detailed feedback on the presenters. Pain in the ass that you have to submit your feedback by the next day [he does accept late work though]. He's a pretty hard grader on presentations, but just follow the criteria and you'll be fine.
He's a great professor! I took him for General Bio. He didn't give any tests, final exams. Our entire grade is made up of clicker question quizzes (usually 5 questions per class). He drops the lowest 30 points. You should go to each class! The clicker questions add up.
No exams what so ever. There are 5 clicker questions per class and they accumulate to your over all grade. They are difficult but at the end he removes 30 questions from the overall so you get a pretty good curve and probably an A. It's an easy A but you must go to class.
He was amazing, the best professor I had my freshman year. I recommend for everyone to take him. What many students didn't know, that the book is there to help you answer his clicker questions. He was clear over all the topics, and as long as you put your part you should get an A. He was also really funny.
Great professor! There is no midterm or final in the class. He will ask questions during the class in which you use clickers (5-10 questions a class) and that will be all the work students will do. You get partial credit even for wrong answers, in the end, he adds up the points you receive and drops 30 points. Very easy class, and funny professor!
Absolutely adored Dr. Zen. He is hilarious and explains everything nicely. Highly recommend. No final, no tests, just clicker questions that you can answer with the books and notes.
easy, just go to class, take notes ,you have clicker questions . its the final and total of 130 he drops 30 at the end of the semester .
He is such an amazing and awesome professor!! Only grades by clicker points, so if i were you i would go to class to get every point possible. Best teacher I have had, and it is such an easy A. You do get to learn if you pay attention. So awesome 10 out of 10 would take again and again and again
Didn't stress much about this class. There's no test at all, just clicker questions that build up points to your final grade. There's no extra credit but if you come everyday, you'll build up points.
Zen is really laid back and good to know, he is in charge of the bio departments grad program & Tri-Beta Honor Society sponsor, but you never get to really know Zen because he is super antisocial. His class is cake, nothing but clicker questions, you have to be really academically challenged not to ace his class. No test, no HW,!
I took him under the impression that there would be 130 clicker questions so I could have a safety net in case I mess up because Im not good in bio now there is 104q and it's stupid bc he'll ask the question THEN explain I don't see how that makes sense. BTW buy the actual UTPA book bc I bought 1 and it is useless! 79.9 is not a B 89.9 is not an A!
Awesome Professor!
He's a funny and entertaining professor. He always makes pop culture references or weird analogies to help you remember info. The only thing I didn't like was that some of the questions he asked we hadn't covered, so we basically were guessing; he didn't explain until afterwards. He doesn't round your grade up either so keep that in mind.
During lecture, He is all over the place. Read and study before coming to class. Weekly Clicker questions no midterm or final exams. He doesn't give extra credits. No help no begging no nothing. What you get is what you've worked for.
he cusses curses a lot during class lectures. He seems eccentric and weird. in class clicker test questions. don't ever miss class. read and study prior to going to class
Took him my freshman year, awesome professor. Cracks up jokes during lecture and/or uses real life scenarios to help you understand material better. No mid term or final exam for Gen Bio 1 all clicker questions so I strongly recommend you GO TO CLASS and 30 extra points given at the end of course.
He is amazing! I hate biology but he made it fun. He never gets mad or annoyed he is such a happy person and funny. no exam just clicker questions. You can miss a few classes because he drops the lowest points. I would take him again if i could!
Kinda weird way of teaching. No weekly tests. Just clicker questions attendance is graded too.
He is a really tough grader, not many people got A's. I do not recommend him. He is disrespectful toward students, doesn't follow his grading criteria at all. There is no book only 7 assignment. Doesn't give enough time to do it or any help at all. Clicker question mandatory to pass.
Attendance is taken with clicker questions and for each clicker question you get wrong he gives you 1/4 credit for it. He is a happy go lucky dude and tries his best to make everything easy to understand.
Dr. Zen is the BEST professor I have ever had. I would recommend him to everyone I know. He explains all the information very well and will not move from a topic until the entire class fully understands it. He doesn't believe in midterms or finals so you have to go to class to get grades by his clicker questions.
No tests-- 7 assignments throughout the semester. The assignment instructions can be confusing. Go to class because clicker questions are worth 30% of your grade. Just try your best deciphering the programs he uses.
You get 110 clicker questions through out the semester and all the ones you get right are basically your grade , so 10 are freebies.
He's so enthusiastic to teach. NO quizzes or tests. ONLY homework questions that can be found online, and clicker questions throughout class I recommend you take your laptop to look for the answers... the clickers are your grade.. GO TO CLASS you'll need a clicker but you can just order the subscription and use an app or the online website
amazing professor
awesome professor
dr zen was an okay teacher. honestly, my ap bio teacher was a waaay better teacher than him. He only grades clicker questions and homework and your lab. the clicker questions are okay but sometimes i panic because they are a bit hard. I feel like i didnt get much out of it. Maybe there is a better professor idk. You can reach him through email
Easy class no essays just clicker question and stuff online and supppppperrr easy
This man is very special. He is a great professor, and very funny. Easy class, you must take if you want to breeze by. He has long cool hair. I recommend him 100%. He has good energy too, positive vibes.
had to drop this class, because he decided to do something different. I took this class, cause heard good reviews, but the quizzes were long and hard not plenty of time or the essays. I am from out of town, didn't realize the final was at campus. I am from out of town , what is the purpose of on-line class. Therefore had to drop. disappointed
Same assignments different material every week. 1 easy intro quiz, 1 discussion post on BB with replies, 1 lab assignment, and 1 exit quiz. I never watched a lecture but read the lecture scripts just enough to answer the weekly objective questions. Got 50s on every exit quiz but never missed a discussion, lab or entry quiz and got a surprising A
Dr Faulkes is one of the best professors I've had! He has 4 main assignments each worth 15% with 3 of them based on a software that we had to install (software is free and provided by him). The rest of the 40% are based on clicker questions that are given throughout the lecture so pay attention to the lectures. Overall great teacher and great class
Dont register for his class online unless you want to occupy everyday of the week for just that class! Youll have assignments due every day, a quiz on Monday a discussion on Tuesday, respond to classmates by Thursday, and an assignment and a quiz due on Friday!
Im stressing over this class, it is a lot of work. The quizzes do not make any sense to the lecture power points, so read the textbook. Quizzes are hard and it is timed which freaks me out and I feel like Ima do poorly.
For his online class there is a prequiz , discussion board, online lab assignment, and an exit quiz (It's timed and is short answer response/ multiple choice on lock down browser) every week!! There is also a comprehensive final. Do not take this if you want an easy A. Even if you do all your work the quizzes are difficult and worth a lot. :(
Take another professor!! He is a great person, but this online class requires all your effort, and even then you're not guaranteed a good grade. No "test" unless you count weekly exit quizzes and a comprehensive final that is worth majority of your grade!! Wish I would have known before. Looks like I'll have to drop.
don not take this class, the online lab activities take up almost all of your day, its just time consuming, its not like if I sit here all day at the computer, we have other classes to study for and we have assignments due almost every single day Mon-Fri, weekends are free but it is still a lot og work when I have to read for other classes or hw .
Dr. Faulkes is a really great online professor to take! He gives you a clear schedule to follow and gives you all the resources you need to pass and even make an A in the class. He even gives you the entire textbook for free in PDF. He is super good about answering back in time if you have any issues and his lectures are pretty interesting!
Honestly the work is doable if you manage your time well, but you have to make sure you stay on top of everything. You have to work for your grade. This is not an easy A. Just completing every assignment wont guarantee you a good grade, you have to make sure you know your stuff. If you care about your GPA seriously consider taking another professor
This is not an easy online class. The course comes with a heavy workload, and grading is tough. There is at least one thing due every week day except for Wednesdays.
IF YOU WANT AN EASY A DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This has been one of my hardest online classes, His final is worth most of your grade 59/200 points. He has a preview quiz, discussion, exit quiz, and assignment due every week. His exit quizzes are so difficult compared to his online lecture that he gives. Lets you take a 3x5 index card to final exam
Honestly, if you are expecting an easy A, don't take this class. It's incredibly demanding. Every week there's a preview quiz (1 pt), a discussion post and 2 responses (3 pts.), an assignment (3 pts.), and an exit quiz (3 pts.). The final is worth 59/200 pts. Although his class was tough, I learned a lot and his lectures were really interesting!
ALMOST EVERY DAY SOMETHING IS DUE and the final is in person which beats the purpose of an online class. All of the assignments are time-consuming and took me 1-3 hours every day. If you're going to take this class, get Chegg and do most of the work on the weekends bc this will eat up your time. This was a hard class and it gave me my first B:(
Terrible class and caused me so much stress. I should have dropped. I don't suggest taking this professor, but at least he was organized and gave us the textbook pdf
For neurobio, you have to do 4 assignments which are all on confusing softwares that are not explained over in class. You pretty much have to figure it out all by yourself and his instructions are confusing. Clicker questions are 30 percent of the grade and usually only half the class gets them right. This class just stresses me out.
ONLINE CLASS There's homework on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. You have to do a discussion and respond to your classmates. Also, there's a preview-quiz and quiz. The assignments are done on SimUText application for some reason it's rare to get a perfect score. I did not know anybody who was able to get a perfect score on those assignments.
I am doing the rating based on this current season of covid-19. He is straight forward on what he wants and expects. Every week is the same format. He's a funny, knowledgeable, and great professor. Textbook is not needed if you take good notes from his lecture videos. He replies back asap, and is very understanding through this difficult times.
By far the most condescending professor I've taken. Feedback feels highly critical, rarely constructive. Lots of lengthy assignments AND he takes weeks to grade. Super nitpicky with his grading even if you follow his rubrics and examples down to a T. Assignment instructions after often vague and contradictory, but good luck getting help from him.
Dr. Zen is a good professor that will allow you to grow academically. He always has a rubric for every assignment that shows you exactly what he is looking for. He gives great feedback on assignments and ways to improve.
I have Dr. Zen for both LIFESCI 3Z03 and LIFESCI 3LA3. This is his second year at McMaster University and I must say HE IS A GEM! LIFESCI 3Z03 lectures are very interesting plus he is so funny and genuine. He is very approachable and is always willing to help his students. Highly recommend taking his courses!
The class material was interesting and fair; discussion/responses, term project, and exam. He is nice and engaging, the only complaints are that the lecture videos are extremely laggy. He doesn't bother to fix the transcript so it feels like we miss key info. He doesn't release the quizzes so we don't know what we got wrong so no room to improve.
The class was very enjoyable, the content was fascinating. However, the lecture videos had lots of glitches. Aside from technical difficulties, this was probably the most chill class I've taken and the most chill prof.
He is a very understanding prof and he grades assessments very fairly.
Do NOT learn from this Professor. His degree needs to be reevaluated. He frequently misinformed students of incorrect information. Did not specify where he pulled his information from. Gets extremely offended when you ask questions that he does not know. Purposefully tricks you on quizzes. I EMPHASIZE DO NOT take his class, it will ruin your GPA.
He's fun during lectures, but he's a tough grader and definitely doesn't like talking to people outside of class. I approached him once to say hi. He slightly turned, and then turned back around and completely ignored me while still standing.
