He knows his info well, but cannot explain it. Was helpful during the final.
clear, easy to understand, lets you have a cheat sheet on his tests!
One of the few in the math dept. that speak english, very slight accent.
class is hard but he is great.. very smart man
Good Professor, explains well
spent TOO much time on basic concepts' very watered-down, boring
great teacher...get to have formulas on test....cares about his students...GREAT
awful, you couldnt really understand him and he assumed you knew UNHELPFUL
Good teacher and a good guy.
I think he hates all students. Does not explain anything, exams are nothing like homework assignments. Gets mad if you ask questions, hates to repeat, not patient. Terrible man
understand that STATS is something that relys on concepts, it mostly is whether you grasp them or not, Zhang is pretty willing to help, he doesn't mind you going to his office, attempt homework and ASK QUESTIONS, kind of hard to understand verbally
Little difficult to understand, but an okay teacher
Nice guy and very willing to help me out. If people would concentrate on the subject matter and not the accent it would be easier for them.
Compared to most math teachers at this school, this guy speaks perfect english. The tests are a bit tricky and worded very different from the homework he assigns, no attendance taken either which is a plus if stat comes naturally to you.

Not only does Zhang sucks at explaining the concepts of stat., his hand writing is awfully sloppy. His testes are tricky and have nothing to do with the homework assignments!
This guy is possibly the worse teacher i've ever had. i mean anyone who teaches with his back to u isnt suppose to be teaching. he even screws up his own work when doing it for the class. not good at all, find another stats teacher PLEASE
Great learning experience. Want to enjoy the class? Don't sit there like you're in a twilight zone. Do the homework and ask questions. Easy to understand and willing to help. So the exams aren't worded exactly like the homework, just learn the concept
Best math couse I have ever taken, very clear, makes sure EVERYONE understands concepts before he goes further
Wonderful teacher! Study the practice tests and examples in class! No attendance but go to class! He hates it when no one shows up! He watches to see who's there and uses this to decide how much he will help you!
I'm sorry, but I'm not stupid, when the whole class fails every exam, we have a problem!
Great teacher. He doesn't drop the lowest test grade but he gives out sample test to help you study. He takes his time to make sure everyone understands the concept.
boring and repetative. Does help you if you need it though!
does a good job teaching a difficult math course. tried to be sure everyone understands and even gave us his home phone # once when he was sick in case we needed help!! great guy
worst teacher ever. if you are in his class RUN!! Doesnt really teach, only goes over homework that you're suppose to do. Test suck only 4 and have a max of 7 questions on each! Trust me GET OUT NOW!
I'm not sure what to say about this class...basically if you don't pay attention in the beginning, then you're lost for the rest of the semester. He's not a bad teacher at all, but if you don't commit yourself early on, then you'll be screwed! So go to class!
pay attention in class and you may understand. he was so boring, i figured i could teach myself...didn't work out that way. managed to get a B, though. lets you have "cheat sheets" for tests. that kills you when you get to the final and cant have one, though. i wouldn't take him again.
knows his material, makes the class very interesting even if you hate numbers...tests are moderate. Extremely helpful and laid-back, he's not a bad prof. Just know how to use the formulas and do the homework, it helps!!!
doesn't take attendance and you dont HAVE to do the homework! he explains things well and he usually has a higher class average than other stats teachers! i liked him a lot even though i hate stats, but the teacher was fun to laugh at. thumbs up!
Good teacher, but stat in general is VERY HARD. Ask questions when he gives you the chance otherwise he'll keep going. Doesn't take attendance or check homework, but definately go to class and do your homework or you will fail. I sat in the final for the full 3 hrs and i wasnt alone.
Gives a lot of examples and sample tests. Do homework even though it is not graded..it will help you understand statistics...not a hard class at all if you do the work. Will answer any statistics questions you have...encourages questions. Teaching method is easy to follow.
Goes kind of fast, but is a good prof and knows his stuff. doesn't take up hw or take attendance, but go and do the hw if u want to understand the work. overall, a good guy to take. and ASK QUESTIONS!
I did not feel that he was friendly at all. I rarely attended class, but did the homework and did fine. I understood it before he explained it, and then he confused me with his explinations.
You couldn't ask for a better Stats teacher. He really wants the students to do well and is very nice and open to questions if you approach him after class. He's a smart guy and knows that most students do poorly because they don't keep up with the work, and that does annnoy him. Know how to do the practice tests, study, and you should be okay.
I thought he was a really cool teacher. His lectures are kind of boring, but he will clearly understand the material. I showed up to class everyday and did the homework. Because of my efforts, my lowest grade on any exam was a 97. I would recommend him for anyone.
if you come to class, write down everything he writes and study you will do well. he's not too hard to understand. really loves statistics and numbers. doesnt take up homework. tests are challenging but lets you use a "cheat sheet"
If you have a hard time with Statistics, I def. recommend him. He's the greatest math teacher I have ever had, really passionate about teaching. If you do the homework and pay attention it's not too hard to get an A. The only bad thing was that he left the room for most of the exams so people talked and cheated. It was hard to concentrate.
Zhang was great - really wants you to have a good experience. Very smart and helpful. HOWEVER - I felt he spent the majority of the semester on easier material (I made 99's on the first two tests) and then crammed the hard/confusing stuff in at the end. Go to class, pay attention, go to class, do your homework even though it's not mandatory.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Highly recommended! Explains everything throughly and willing to answer any and every question. Definitely knows what he's talking about. HW is optional and lets you use a cheat sheet on tests. Was VERY worried about stats but cruised on by with an A.
Unlike the other people who commented I did not think that he was a good teacher at all. I thought he made relatively easy concepts hard just by the way he explained them. He used formulas that weren't even in our book. He spent the majority of the time on stuff he thought was important not stuff that was going to be on the final.
Z's class was the easiest i've ever had. theres no required attendance or homework but if you want to do well go to class anyway. lets you use cheat sheets on tests which are almost the same thing as his practice tests. i think he is tired of teaching though because he doesnt help much outside of the classroom
WORST TEACHER EVER DO NOT TAKE
This professor was great. Its a math class so you cant just never come to class and expect a good grade. If you pay attention and do the homework you will be fine. I got an A. Attendance isnt required but dont expect a good grade if you don't go. Getting notes from a friend wont help. Just go to class, take notes, do hw, and study.
overcomplicates relatively easy concepts. we should have learned how to use the calculator more. he will help you after class and he set up tutoring for those who needed it. cheat sheets are cool and having the formulas.
I already struggle in math and this teacher just made my whole experience a lot worse. I had to withdraw because he only takes up 3 exam grades and tells you that if you did bad on the first 2 then you might as well drop because it is very unlikely that you'll pass. I do not advise taking this class if you struggle with math.
I love Dr. Z. I have dropped statistics twice in the past but not this time. He wants you to do well and he explains things as simply as he can.
He does not curve any of his tests so that if you don't do well, that's it. He does not explain things after he had already explained it. He just expects you to know something that he went over and gets angry if you ask again. Sometimes it it hard to understand him because of his accent. He also did a terrible job of preparing us for the final
I think he's reasonable man. If you don't understand something he'll explain it, but it sure is pointless if you don't even try to understand it yourself. Sends sample tests that are just like his real tests; no quizzes. Doesn't have a strong accent, but if you're not used to accents then I wouldn't recommend him. Overall easy class.
This class is as difficult as you make it. You do not have to attend class at all, the book teaches you everything you need to know to get an A on the tests. However, if you don't put in the necessary study hours, you're going to do poorly. I went to class and he gave hints about tests which helped. 3 tests, does not drop lowest, common final.
well...he is very sarcastic and his tests are no joke. They are a little bit challenging, but listen to what he teaches and reinforce what you learned by reading the book and you should be fine. He isn't the best, but he tries...
This professor made absolutely no sense. He talks in circles & makes problems way more complicated than they have to be when explaining. I went to tutoring which helped ALOT, but just couldn't get through his tests. First one is easy, second, not so much, so don't get cocky. Do HW, attendance isn't needed.
Prof. Zhang is a good teacher. Class is a little dry unless you like talking about black and white chips in a box. If you go to class, and do some studying, you will do just fine.
Zhang tries to help as much as he can. He's open to answering questions you may have. Although HW and attendance aren't mandatory, its important that you stay on top of both. They are key to doing well in the course. The book really helps. Try not to get behind b/c it will hurt you. He watches who comes to class & helps their grade in the end
Nice guy.very strong accent. 3 tests and a final.doesn't take attendance but it helps to come. a lot of outside studying is required but thats no matter who you have.tests aren't bad.you HAVE to study and he allows a cheat sheet every test(except final).complete and understand the homework and you will do fine !
He is very witty and keeps class interesting by explaining real life application. He also lets you know how much money you can earn just by knowing certain info he teaches in the class. Really wants to help so do homework problems so you know which questions to ask. I hated math but i got a B+ because he made he explained it in simple logic.
Strong accent, but fair and really wants you to learn. Does NOT use Moodle or Powerpoints, only hand written problems & chalkboard. Very honest and helps you figure out if you will pass at the start. Had him in a lecture hall so he didn't bother with attendance. Won't budge a grade or drop a test score, but offers you everything available to pass.
he gives lots of homework and takes time to explain concepts. he's very honest and will keep going over things you do not understand. he allows cheat sheets for all his exams although there are only 4 (3 regular and a final) an these are your only grade.
Zhang has a mild accent but nothing I couldn't understand. He is very happy to any answer any question and would take time outside of class to explain any question. His study guide is basically the exam.
This is a challenging class. The professor is extremely smart but sometimes has trouble explaining his thought process. I would recommend, though. He's very funny! Even though he doesn't take attendance- COME TO CLASS! Seriously.. and do the homework problems and study guides.
Professor Zhang was awful. His accent is IMPOSSIBLE to understand. He is way too smart to teach the material well. I got an 88 on the first test, and it all went downhill when the material got harder. I failed this class miserably and re-took it with professor Stephen Wuor and passed with a B! He was the best professor I have ever had!!!
HATE! I absolutely hate math to begin with and he made me hate it a lot more. Very hard to understand with his accent. This is probably the most difficult class I've had. He is very discouraging and always tells us that if we do not understand we might as well drop the class. Awful professor. Would not recommend.
Very hard to understand, and he does not explain his thought process well. Test are tough and there are only 3 excluding the final. Which are your only grades. So go to class and do the homework and study guides!
Hate his teaching styles. Basically had to teach myself or go to tutor which I tried but still withdrawal never would tell someone to take him!
Professor Zhang thoroughly explains all the material that we'll be tested on. Homework is optional, but very helpful if you do it and he will go over any questions you had about it at the beginning of every class. Your final grade is composed of 3 tests and a final. He genuinely wants us to succeed, is easy to understand, and a remarkable educator.
Great professor
Dr. Zhang is a great professor. One may say he's far too intelligent to be teaching this course. It may get rigorous after the 1st test but if you attend every class, take notes, & do HW there's no reason not to do well in this course. ASK QUESTIONS WHEN CONFUSED! There's only 4 grades which are tests so study hard and he also allows cheat sheets.
Your grade is solely based on 3 tests and the final. Nothing else. He is knowledgeable and teaches well but I did find myself doing a lot of learning on my own. Attendance is not mandatory but definitely go. The first test is easy but it gets really hard after that and it can be hard to catch up. I skipped a whole 3 weeks and definitely regret it.
Dr. Zhang is a good teacher. He truly cares about his students learning the material. I am not good at math, but he tried very hard to help me understand any topics I needed help with. He was always available during his office hours. He does not take attendance, but you will not pass if you do not go.
He teaches everything straight from the textbook, but lectures to no end by drawing all over the chalkboard. The first test in this class is easy, but the other ones are most certainly not, and the whole grading scheme for the class is based on 4 tests, each 25% of your grade. He's not a bad professor, I just disagree with the way he does things.
Dr. Zhang made Statistics very easy to understand. It's important to attend all the classes if you want to do well. He makes the material a lot easier to comprehend than reading will ever do. He grades based on 4 tests, but there is a lot of optional homework. You can bring a notes sheet to tests.
I would not recommend for Summer sessions specifically. He's decent at lecturing but he's disorganized and has no set dates for any of the tests. Claims "I've never done this before" as an excuse to have a sloppy online schedule. He lacks empathy and often claims that poor grades are a direct result of laziness. He's smart but rude.
This man is not fit to be a professor, very rude and never gives a straight response or most times no response to your doubts and questions. Its like any other stat class you would have taken at uncc but dont expect any help from this guy when it comes to anything.
Due to the COVID his classes have turned to online. Does NOT teach much in zoom meetings. You learn all the information by yourself from the videos he has recorded and he doesn't edit them so you might have to erase some things because he got the information wrong. his zoom meetings are just for questions. homework optional. only grades are tests
Zhang really cares about his students, but it's obvious that he is struggling with distanced learning changing the way he has to teach. If you take him online, you will really have to put in a lot of time to do well in this course. There is no room for error, you have to watch every lecture, do every homework problem, and come to the live lectures.
If I hadn't withdrawn due to my illness, I know it would be a lot of me teaching myself the material. The videos don't match up to the homework we were assigned, his hand writing was sloppy, and he was rude when answering questions. We asked when the test was since there were no dates, but he gets angry at us.
I would NEVER recommend him. He's extremely condescending! He has lots of lectures that can get confusing. If he doesn't think your question is hard he'll say, "How is that hard? Im not going over that. " He told us, "if you think I teach in a way thats hard to understand. You're wrong! Just learn to understand." I've never met anyone this rude.
I just feel so hopeless in this class. He told us to watch nine hours of lectures by the first class period, and it never got better. The tests are harder than the homework, the homework has no due date so it's hard to know how far I've fallen behind, and there are no grades besides the tests so if you fail anything, you're basically done.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had at UNCC. Grades consist of 4 tests so if you bomb one you'll never recover. Says the homework will help boost your grade at the end of the semester but never changes your grade. Gives terrible feedback on tests and grades extremely inconsistent. Avoid at all costs!
Average professor. Will ask students directly if they understand the concepts which is nice. The whole class consists of him going over examples on his iPad. Tests are straightforward and often the answers are online if you want to go that route. If I took the in-person version, I would probably still choose him over the other STATs professors.
Very untraditional. Tells us not to take notes and does not use slides. Because he does not use slides, he often does not provide the proper visuals that learners need to be successful. I got a C in this class after a 4.0 so what he does different (not using visuals) makes him a teacher who can't even make the most successful students succeed.
Is a tough grader since there are only 4 exams in the grade book. Gets mad when students ask questions, not very helpful or flexible when you have a concern.
Do the homework. The test is the homework and the homework is the test. His grades four or five tests and if you don't do well on the first one, you are fighting an unwinnable up hill battle. His lectures he can come off as a bit condescending, undermining your intelligence if you ask a question. Don't Take this guy. He will only frustrate you
Has a different way of teaching, teaching through understanding rather than giving out HW. HW is not mandatory and everything is heavily weighted on 4 tests that you take. He has a lot of stories to tell and might not be for everyone but still enjoyed his class nonetheless.
Prof Zhang made this class feel impossible to succeed in. I am usually an A or B student and am fighting to get a C in his class. Your grade is compiled of 4 test grades each worth 25% meaning that one bad test grade is extremely hard to recover from. He wrote the textbook. Take any other teacher. He makes stat way harder than it should be.
He overviews lots of material in class, but to understand the specifics, you have to read the textbook on your own. Know that you will have to spend a significant amount of time outside of class to truly grasp the material. The grade is based solely on tests, but they were not impossible and closely resembled the homework problems.
One of the worst professors I've had. No homework or attendance requirement. When you ask about hw, he would do them on the board and say if you don't understand this, better drop the course. The tests are always more difficult than the actual homework, even if you do all the assigned homework, there is no guarantee that you would do well in tests.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He gives no homework and the whole course is graded on 4 tests. He would get and at the class or many students feel silly for asking questions. He would constantly say things like "if you don't get this, you should probably just leave". Do not take his class.
Hands-down, the absolute worst professor I have ever had. I have a 3.8 GPA and I barely scraped a low C in this class. 4 tests, 25% of your grade each. The average on the first three tests was below a 60. Instead of taking accountability for poor teaching, he berated the class for the low grades. Do yourself a favour and avoid him, seriously.
This professor is Only grades for things for the entire semester which is 3 test and the Final. Be prepared to go to class every day and engaged in what he is teaching you or you won't do good. I started the year of decent with passing my first two test but then slacked off and failed my third. He does care about his students. Would take again.
This class is only graded by 4 tests including the mid term and final. The professor is not really helpful outside of class and the lectures are hard to understand. He tries to give you as many points as possible on the test though for showing your work. If you're someone who can teach themselves outside of class, take this professor.
This professor only has 3 test and the final exam so if you fail one test it is basically impossible to come back. This professor often overcomplicates every subject and then says, "if you don't understand this you are just not smart and need to leave." I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone, save your money and avoid taking this professor.
Sometimes his honesty can come off as rude, but I don't think he's as bad as some of these reviews make him out to be. His lectures are easy to understand if you read the chapter before class. Attendance and homework is optional. Exams are similar to the homework problems. The one thing I disliked the most was that the only grades are the 4 exams.
Makes students feel dumb for asking questions and is does not answer the questions without adding something rude. Only graded on tests and the lectures are not helpful. I mostly had to learn by myself from the book to understand anything. Math is not my best subject so this class was extremely difficult for me.
He has three tests and the final exam that are each worth 25% of your grade. There are a ton of homework assignments but they are all optional I highly recommend doing them to understand the content. Professor Zhang also uses teaching techniques from the before graphing calculator days. He teaches you these complicated formulas instead.
Stopped going to class after the first exam and began teaching myself in the library during the class period. If you can teach yourself some of the more difficult formulas, you should have an easy time in this class.
He seems nice. His honesty may come off a little rude, but his teaching style is abhorrent. The only four grades you will ever receive are the 3 tests and 1 exam. You do not ever have to come in to class. Do yourself a favor and find a professor that will actually teach normally.
He's very smart but it comes off much more as him looking down on you than him wanting to help. Only grades are 4 tests and 1 exam, and he constantly tells you that nothing will be replaced or made up. Also wants homework and attendance even though they count for nothing. He's often rude during class, and makes you feel stupid for asking questions.
After the first exam, I started attending a friend's lecture with a different professor and it was instantly superior to this man's teaching style.
- Utilizing external time to read over textbook provides more benefit than attending the lectures - None of your homework or attendance provides you any numerical benefit for your grade whatsoever (disincentivizes students) - Gets verbally lost in lecture - If you don't get something, he becomes frustrated or outright disrespectful Avoid!
AVOID!! I only took him because I had no other option! You are only graded on tests, but the homework and attendance is somehow mandatory. The lower quartile on Test 2 was a 0. The textbook over complicates simple concepts, lectures get off topic. Teach yourself outside of class, but you have to attend class or you will not know when the tests are.
Professor Zhang is a decent teacher, but the class structure itself is just not good. Graded solely on 4 tests all weighted the same meaning not doing good on one is costly. Gives a lot of homework but doesn't require it to be turned in. Lectures the whole class time and doesn't leave room for anything else. Doesn't really answer questions in class
ONLY 5 test, that's all your grades for the class. And did I mention that they all are 5 tricky free responses? He is abhorrently lazy, he doesn't even know when the test are. He just teaches as he goes, and never has dates for anything. His canvas is empty, and what he does have is 4 years outdated with what he's doing.
4 total tests in the class, each one worth 25% of the grade each. His lectures are a little bit hard to follow so expect to have to teach yourself outside of class. He gives practice tests before each exam that are pretty identical to the exams, making them fairly easy. No graded homework or assignments.
While I did pretty well in this class, if you really want to learn the material and make sure you ace the test I would not take this professor. The first day, he said if you don't understand what we are doing you should basically leave (or drop the course, I'm assuming). I don't think he's bad, I just think you could teach yourself.
He is VERY old fashion. STAT1220 is able to be done solely on the calculator, but he did not teach us how to do anything on the calculator, everything by hand. Your grade is 4 tests and nothing else. Attendance is not mandatory. He calls students dumb for asking questions and often tells students to leave if they do not understand. Do not take!
Professor Zhang has a unique teaching style, but if you're willing to put in the work, you can succeed. The tests are challenging, so utilize resources like the textbook, Unstuck study, and office hours. Overall, a solid class if you're up for the challenge.
DO NOT TAKE- He struggled to do homework that HE ASSIGNED, has to use google. Grade was only 3 tests. No prepared lectures, no communication through canvas, if you miss a class you could miss everything. However, he doesn't take attendance, and homework is not counted in final grade. First response for struggling students is to drop the class.
He somehow makes a course as simple as STAT-1220 far more difficult than it needs to be. He rambles incoherently and often gets sidetracked by his own monologues which lead him down a rabbit hole of irrelevant stories.
Did not find class was worth going to, as he just wrote random examples on the board instead of pulling up actual problems to teach us how to solve them. The only grades being our tests is wild too, but the class is manageable if you can get a good grade on tests.
Quite literally the worst professor I've ever experienced. He walks into class every day, slams down his mug and papers, then leans against the desk and turns to the class with a bored, disgusted look. He verbally abuses and ridicules students who ask questions, which are bound to appear due to his roundabout teaching style. Avoid at all costs.
Zhang is a good professor, but grading is rough, with four exams, each worth 25% of your overall grade. There are no homework assignments, participation, or quizzes to help your grade, which makes the exams stressful. He does a good job teaching the material. Only critique is that he doesnt teach how to use calculators for the content.
Dr. Zhang is definitely a unique professor but if you go to class and participate you'll do well in class, and he'll appreciate it. If you put in the effort he will help you with your grade. Grade is only based on 4 exams and there's no homework. The class is fairly easy. His teaching style could not work for everyone but is pretty easy to follow.
I did not take these reviews seriously at the beginning of the semester, but U should. Dr. Zhang is smart, don't get me wrong, but being educated on a topic does not automatically mean you can teach. Don't take the class, just don't. I barely escaped without a grade. Unless u are extremely and I mean extremely motivated, u won't pass.
If you literally need this class, then take it, but be ready to learn everything on your own, he knows his stuff but can't teach it. If you're not enrolled in niner course pack, don't purchase his textbook, it is free on his app "Intro Stat". The logo is a bell-shaped curve, that and drawing chips out of a box is the only thing learned.
He is very difficult to understand and only gives four grades for the whole year. Doesn't teach, just talks.
