VERY sweet lady but makes you work. If you talk to her she will love you.
Easy homework grades. Kinda hard to understand. Drops your lowest grades.
You Undastand? Question?
One more classic case where the U of S takes a relatively easy class and turns it into an impossible task!
question? very difficult to understand, not interesting, teaches from book, lots of homework, tests are hard, final is 40% of grade so the whole semester depends on this grade
No Comments
At first really tough to understand. Easy to get used to. Alot of homework, but it then makes it easy to study for tests. Tests are somewhat tricky, but she drops the lowest. Final is 25% of grade. Bottom Line: Learned a few things, did fairly well.
Very good teacher
Goes very fast, but if you try to stay with her, it's not too bad. Any kestia? you undastand? Do the hw and you'll get a good grade in the class. Good grading policy.
took class a while ago great prof
Shes a good teacher but she has a very strong accent.
Hard to understand and moves fast, but tests and quizzes are wicked easy. She drops 1 test and 2 quizzes, so it's not hard to get a good grade. Easy A, especially if you've ever had Calc in high school.
any Question? Can u fallow me? undershtand?, powynomia, funckshon . great lady to make fun of her accent. good teacher and easy. damn, she also smokin'
She is a very, very nice lady who really embraces what she teaches. The tests and quizzes are not that bad at all. Her accent is a bit difficult, but not impossible to overcome. Very helpful. Good class to take.
best pre calc teacher at uofs esay to understand. def take this teacher
Very good teacher, you are lucky if you can get her!!
Explains problems well. If you do the homework, the tests are child's play.
Great lady and everything is evenly weighted but when it comes to grading the final, you better be exact or you will get nothing.
I just could not understand her english. she needs to take an english class before she teaches American students. I always got an A in calculus, but not for her. I got a C+
JUST ONE WORD. BAD!!!!!
Very hard to understand what she says, does not help at all, the notes we took in class have no relevance to the homework...overall she is bad
She is a good teacher (cannot speak proper English tho). Some times she moves fast and doesnt answer questions. The best thing is to do the homework...then you will go great on the tests.
Bad. Does book's examples which are easy, but does not help you with homework. Grades hw strictly. Hard to understand, going to her for help is a waste of time. Should have taken dougherty...
you think you're taking a course in calculus? PAH you are actually being tested on how well you understand her broken english.transfer out.
she's not that hard to understand. she just says eeeee raised to thurd powa n wut not. u get 10/10 on ur hw if u attempt all the problems. quiz avg, hw, test avg, and final are 25% of your grade. lowest of 3 tests are dropped and best 5 of 8 quizes count. so easy n real nice.
she's more then willing to help during office hours. though she is difficult to understand, her grading is pretty easy and she drops alot of the low grades. she's good with giving partial credit. definately take her if you can
get over the accent and your good. do the homeworks and the tests arent hard at all. very easy four credit good grade.
Any kwestia? Undastand? Took me a while to figure out that "aid" means add..otherwise helpful in office hrs. and nice prof. Watch you don't get lost in translation..
Once you get used to her accent she's a really great prof. Explains every problem thoroughly and goes over homework every day on the board and shows you what you did wrong. Lowest test is dropped and homework counts. Really helpful and thorough, take her
GREAT TEACHER!!! I can't say enough good things about her! I am horrible in math and she's the best teacher I ever had! You must attend the class though to do good...she gives homework and a quiz almost every week if you learn the material you will do great!
She isn't as bad as people make her out to be. I took her over intersession and she taught us very well and she cared about our progress and how well we would do. The class is a lot of work with alot of homework....but overall she's one of the better math teachers at the U!
This class made me feel like I was in 10th grade again. In other words, it was pretty easy for the most part, at least for someone who has learned the math before. Hard to understand at first and not that good at explaining, but she collects homework which is an easy grade booster.
Good Lady! Straightforward, office door is always open. Would recommend her to anyone. Wants everyone to do well. Attendance is not mandatory but we learn alot so I wouldn't recommend skipping.
She's not difficult at all. Once you get past her accent, she is really clear, does alot of examples in class. she collects homework and grades it, so make sure you understand whats going on, because that could really help you boost your grade. I recomend
Hard to understand at first with her stong accent but you get used to it over time. Easy class if you attend/do homework/take the notes she writes on the board/study. Collects, grades, and corrects homework which turns out to be helpful because you see what you do wrong. Easy quizzes/tests if you understand the basic concepts. Willing to help.
very hard to understand, but she is really good at explaining things, once you understand what she is saying...
The people who gave her bad ratings must have the combined IQ of a walnut, and are willing to blame the professor rather than their own problems. She's a great professor, willing to help.
Isn't that clear in class but usually available for extra help and very helpful then.
Bonnie is awesome. It kind of feels like high school, with her collecting/grading homework and giving out review sheets for quizzes and tests, but it REALLY boosts your grade. Quizzes and tests are only slightly different from the problems that appear on the review sheets, so do them and the homework and you are practically guaranteed an A. :)
I dont know how there are so many good comments on her. She was absolutely impossible to understand. Avoid her at all costs.... her accent is the worst!
she does have an accent but you get used to it after the first week. once you get past that, she is a great teacher. if theres something you dont understand go to her office shes more than happy to explain it to you and makes sure you understand. there are only 3 tests and she drops one. pretty easy to get a good grade
can not understand, grades every homework as if her life depends on it, drops one test which keeps you a float and drops a quiz or two, tough accent, most other prof's will be easier
Bonnie is a good professor, hard to understand sometimes due to hard accent, gives a lot of quizzes and she drops 1 or 2 of them and her tests are easy if you know you stuff and she drops 1 test as well. I would recommend her she is super nice and very willing to help even during tests and quizzes which is rare in college. TAKE HER
She is a great math teacher! this class was beyond easy and I got an A in it! Do all the homework and you will be fine! take her! Her accent isnt bad at all!
She is really nice and a great professor, although due to her accent it is hard to understand her sometimes. As for the class she gives several quizzes and homework assignments, three tests, drops one of each, and a final.
very good professor.. easy grader. she does collect homework, but it helps you keep up with the material. tests and quizzes are pretty straightforward if you study. nice lady!
She is such a good teacher. Her accent is hard to understand at first but you get used to it. if you dont get an A in the class then you didnt do your work, she makes it so easy to get an A with all the homework and the tests come directly from them! take her!
I had Bonnie for math 106 she is very helpful and sweet. Her accent is tough at first but you'll get used it it quick. She collects homework for easy 100s and her quizzes and tests aren't bad. I advise you take her she is really good at teaching and doesn't move on until she knows everyone gets it. Great lady/teacher
Bonnie is actually a good teacher, once you learn to understand her accent. She does not allow calculators on tests or quizzes which is awesome b/c the numbers used are always small. Final grade is 25% homework, 25% quizzes, 25% tests, and 25% final. Drops a test and 2 quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory but you must go to class to hand in HW.
she helps you out a lot! she grades homework which is annoying but helps in the end. she is not out to trick you on tests and quizzes.. if you do the work, you'll be fine. probably the easiest math teacher in the department.
If you are good at math, it will be an easy class. If you're not good, it will be very difficult. She grades homework which makes the class way more stressful than it has to be. Tests and quizzes are straightforward if you know the material well. Accent is only hard for the first two days and then you're golden.
One word to describe this class: tedious. grades homework strictly but the tests and quizzes aren't bad...she gives review sheets. nice lady, sometimes hard to understand and she does move fast.
you get used to her accent after 2 days so everyone shouldn't complain about that. i only did bad because I am awful at math.. she was a very helpful prof though. wanted everyone to do well.
she is the nicest lady ever. if you really put the time and effort in, you'll be fine. clear with examples on the board..sometimes goes fast. 4 tests, a final, and some graded hw. not too bad.
super nice woman. really wants everyone to do well and will do everything she can but it's calculus... if you don't work, you won't do well. that's not her fault it's a hard subject. either do the hw or don't and if you dont and do bad, dont complain.
hard class. real intense.. 4 tests, NO drop, lots of graded homework and the problems she assigns are HARD. overall, WAY easier choices for calc.
teaches way too fast and gives a lot of homework, which is graded. tests were difficult but fair..all open ended problems. you have to really keep up with the work if you want to do well in this class. it's easy to get behind but try your best to keep up.
all around great teacher and person. she lives for helping her students succeed. i don't think she has one mean bone in her body. explains things in great detail and keeps the class fun. test weren't that bad if you did the work. if you have to take calc, she's the best choice
One of the better choices for calc. She has an accent but you get used to it in a few days. The class was a lot of work with a lot of graded homework. Attendance was not mandatory but I wouldn't recommend skipping or you'll get very behind. Tests were hard but she gave a lot of partial credit. Explained things well. I'd say take her if you can.
She's a great choice for calc. Has you working the minute you get into class til the very end..your brain will hurt. She tends to go fast on the board but also makes time for the class to practice. Tests were fair..not the easiest but not impossible if you did the work. Homework was HARD..everything is graded. Other than that, take her..great class
One of the best math professors at this school. I dreaded having to take calc but she made it bearable if you kept up with the work and studied. Tests were VERY fair- if you did the work, there were no surprises. She is also extremely nice and helpful in office hours.. you can't find a better teacher than her at this school.
I am absolutely terrible at math and had no prior calc experience and pulled off a B in 114. She was a good teacher once you got used to the accent. Tests were easy if you knew what you were doing. The hardest part was the homework which is graded but helps you stay on top of things. I recommend her if you're bad at math since shes helpful and kind
I would definitely recommend Bonnie for calculus. Although she sometimes moves fast, she is very clear on the board and even gives time for everyone to practice during class. The homework was graded which was a great grade buffer at the end and tests were not hard if you knew what you were doing. VERY HELPFUL. Highly recommend.
Bonnie is a great teacher. She does have an accent, but in a few days you'll be used to it. Math is not my strong-suit but I was able to pull a B in both 103 and 114 by just studying and doing the homework. The graded homework is my only complaint since sometimes you never had the time to do it but the tests were straightforward. Highly recommend.
Bonnie is a sweetheart. However, it is impossible to understand her accent. I literally had zero idea what she was saying the entire class. She grades all homework which is an easy grade. Quizzes can be tough plus shes a hard grader. Tests aren't too bad if you do the homework. My biggest problem with her was that damn accent...
Best professor at Scranton, but doesn't cut corners. Do the work, get the grade that you deserve. I suck at math, but I worked my ass off and got an A. I get the sense that the people who gave her a low rating are the kind of mediocre students who're just whining that they didn't get the grades they feel entitled to.
3 Tests, quiz every Friday. Helpful but hard to understand in class. Quiz or test can be on something you learned the week before. A lot of homework. I would only suggest her if you had a good math teacher in high school.
Bonnie is a good teacher but you have to work for your grade. Her tests are clear-cut but dependent on you actually doing all of the homework and understanding it thoroughly. If you don't do the work to the best of your ability, you won't do well. When I took her three years ago she graded hw.. don't know if she still does that.
Avoid at all costs. Couldn't care less about her students. Impossible to understand or follow in class. Toughest grader I've ever had at Scranton.
Mandatory graded homework, easy quizzes every Friday and three tests. If you do the homework and study for the tests you'll do fine and get a good grade. Some say she is hard to understand but you adjust after the first week. Great teacher and would take again.
Bonnie is such a sweet person. The first day I was extremely nervous because I couldn't understand anything she was saying, but her accent actually makes me pay attention more in class. Just pay attention. DO NOT MISS CLASS. and do the homework and you will get a good grade. She does give a lot of homework but If you do it you're good to go
Bonnie is the best! Everyone complains about her accent but it's REALLY not bad. You'll submit lots of homework to D2L, but she does that so you actually learn something (and it's not that hard)... Quizzes on (some) Fridays. Quizzes/tests are never anything out of the blue... If you plan to skip, do it on a Friday when you don't have a quiz :)
Don't recommend. She is very hard to follow, and she gives lots of homework that she grades for correctness and it actually hurts my grade. Her tests and quizzes are easy but the biggest thing is the homework and her teaching style which is explaining things very unclear. Everyone is my class is always confused and I have to use websites for hw.
Bonnie is the sweetest lady you will ever meet. If you are an incoming freshman, don't skip class. She goes over a lot each class and you will miss a lot. A ton of homework, but if you do it, you won't have to study for exams. I did every homework, went to every class, didnt study for exams, and got As on every exam and the final.
Nice woman but could be hard to follow at times because of her accent, and she tends to move pretty fast. homework almost every night which is graded for correctness. Quizzes and tests are super easy though, if you attend class and do the HW you'll be fine. Don't skip class though because she does cover a lot of material each class.
Graded homeworks that completely destroy your grade. Goes very fast during lectures which make understanding the course material difficult.
Dr. Xiong is undoubtedly one of the WORST MATH TEACHERS I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTER LIFE. She teaches quantitative methods which is supposed to be an easy enough class but she makes the material the most difficult thing to understand. She goes way too fast and rushes her student and never takes her time to explain and she's a tough grader! NOOO!
Goes way too fast during her lectures and does not elaborate. Half the time I can barely understand what she is saying, and the homework is 5x harder than what she goes over in class. Her grading is some of the toughest I've ever seen in a math class, and she never answers my emails, especially now that we moved to online when I need it the most!
I don't have enough room to explain how awful she is. WORST TEACHER. She goes way too fast never stops and u can't even understand what she's saying. She will give you 10 homeworks a night which take 3hours each so u don't have time for any other class but this one. Makes u feel dumb. Rude women. Gives quizzes and tests every week. AWFUL.
I've had 20-25 different professors/GTAs at the U so far, & she is unquestionably the worst instructor I've ever had. Daily mountain of homework is graded on correctness, not allowing you to make mistakes and actually learn the material (Chegg is a necessity). Also, the worst with lecture: dry, incomprehensible, just reading numbers as she writes.
I had a very good background in calc from high school which is the only reason why I did well in this class. If you don't have a good background in calc I wouldn't take her. A lot of people struggle with her class. Class averages were bad. She is very nice but the class moves very fast. The final is much harder than any other exams.
Awful teacher can barely understand her. Grades terribly does not even offer help and then when helped still terrible at explaining. I have no idea who would have hired her probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had.
If you have the option of another professor, do NOT take her. Nightly homework (I had to use chegg just to complete it). Lectures very confusing and hard to understand. Attendance is not mandatory, so I stopped going and just used the notes she posted every night to teach myself. If you are not the best at math or have not taken calc, DONT TAKE HER
Cannot understand a word said during the lectures, great lady but brutal teacher. Drop if you have the chance.
This class was very difficult but you will do ok if you put in the work and reach out for help when you need it. Dr. Xiong is very knowledgeable and willing to give extra help. Theres lots of homework and its graded for accuracy but she fully explains the problems you missed so its beneficial to help understand the material.
Bonnie is a real gem. She has an accent, but it really isn't that bad. She writes everything on the board and explains it very well so as long as you pay attention and write everything down, you'll be fine. Tests are about 10 questions each but are on some of the easiest topics covered. Overall, she is an excellent professor.
Hard to understand but definitely not impossible. I only went to a few classes and taught myself from her notes. Homework daily and 5 exams. I failed my last math class and got an A in hers. Very thorough just wants it done her way. Better than any other algebra prof here.
Dr. Xiong is a very nice and caring person, BUT she is not a great professor. If you have questions during class, they will likely never be answered, or the answer you receive will be too confusing. There are also weekly quiz's and she is a VERY tough grader. Be sure to take good notes during class and be sure to pay attention.
This is the worst ever professor I could ask for especially in Mathematics. She is really tough to understand with the accent she has. Moreover, she only grades us on exams and does not give any kind of extra credits like attendance or participation. Curving grades is beyond imagination even if the class average is bad.
Do not take this class she is no help at all i had a tutor and met with her for hours multiple times a week and i still managed to fail. She writes stuff down on the board and expects you to memorize it. Tests/quizzes every Friday and she is a VERY tough grader. Probably a good person but definitely the worst professor
If you have ever had a hard time hearing though an accent do not take her. Though all semester she would be wearing a N95 mask over another mask and could not be heard all of the time. Her teaching style would have her stand Infront of the class write crooked on the board and never ask anyone for an answer. The only good thing was no homework.
Dr. Xiong was an excellent professor. Exams and quizzes were very accurate to the material covered in class. Lectures consist of many example problems, and the homework assigned was an excellent tool to study for the exams. Grading is very generous, as she does not take off points for small mistakes.
AWFUL!!!! does not speak English. please avoid and not my advice! safe your self!!!
Dr. Xiong spends all class speeding through lectures that are sometimes impossible to understand. The tests are very hard and aren't curved even if the class avg is extremely poor. The grades are 70% for exams (4 of them), 25% cumulative final exam, 5% attendance. She assigns realistic HW and allows questions on HW to be asked in class.
Bonnie constantly has students correcting her during lectures when she has the lesson paper in front of her. I stopped taking notes after a while because I'd have to erase almost everything due to her mistakes The exams are significantly harder than homework. If you're taking this course, google "Paul's Online Math Notes" and buy Chegg for textbook
Do not take her!!! So hard to understand and doesn't explain a thing and just writes it on board. Math 109 caused me stress like no other.
Good professor make sure you understand what your doing for quizzes cause the quizzes are exactly like the test, she is harder to underarms with her accent but you can make it put.
Professor Xiong has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, you can do well. The lectures are helpful, but her accent can be hard to understand at times. Using Unstuck ai and the free textbook alongside attending class is key to success in this course.
