makes you think...
Great teacher
No Comments
Funny (odd jokes), clear explanation, tough tests (very).
Almost changed my major just so I wouldn't have to deal with her ever again (this was when she was the head of the Psych department).
Absolutely terrible! All of the work in the class was done online. If I wanted an online class, I would have signed up for one! I will never take a Psych class again because of her.
She is one of those teachers who puts every word of fine print into her tests! Brutal! Never ever take a class with her!
I thought it was good at the time, now that I'm working, I realize how great this class was!
I learned a lot in this class, a lot more than in 101 (diff instructor) and having the class notes on line was very helpful, if you were sick, you didn't need to get notes from another student. But definitely STUDY the study guide she gives you.
So so so terrible! I will never take one of her classes again, and I'm still wondering if I will ever even take a Psycology class! She does everything online. What a waste of my time and money!
Best of all my first year courses, subject great, teacher also great, very clear lectures (funny also), I did hate the whiner in the front row and wish she'd be a little less polite!
I loved this class, even though it was at a horrible time of day. Did require thinking! I even kept the textbook.
Thanks Zoe for helping totaly loose interest in psyhc!! I would go out of my way not to take a course you teach ever again!!!
Just finished this class, enjoyed it a lot, worked hard but she was clear and helped a lot in how to study (hey, notice how the students who didn't like her can't spell...correlation isn't causation).
Also just finished this course, didn't like psyc much (the brain, uck). The instructor was good, very organized, liked the course set up, she was understanding when I was sick and helped get caught up, just wish she teach something else (like history....)
She is a good instructor, interesting discussions, and the study guide at the end was awesome. Thanks Zoe.
organized, clear, fair, tough
Great class, not a great instructor.
The wicked redheaded witch of Psychology... Run for the hills!
my favorite online class, but hard work !!!
online course was great, ton of work, but easily my favourite
So annoying. Went out of her way to make the class hard. I think she likes to see students do bad.
I took psychology because I have known some very stupid people who have maaged to get a b+ with very little work. Zoe's class is extremely difficult, over half the class failed both midterms. I'm a b+ student, and i'm struggling to maintain a C. This class is Absolutely Ridiculous.
enjoyable, well organized, a lot of reading
love this clas!
i was extremely interested in this class! however, zoe made the class extremely difficult. the exam was tough, but the cheat sheet for the final helped. she seems to enjoy teaching this class but it looks like she made it harder for her students. she knows too much and expects us to know it all!!!!!
Don't waste your time with her. I took Psych 101 online with her and I was not impressed. The amount of reading was insane since she assigned entire websites as required reading on top of the book. Her exam review consisted of 110 possible short answer question. That really narrowed things down.
I liked this course, best of the online classes I took last term, it was organized and interesting. Zoe was helpful all the way through, made a big difference to have the prof there a lot (my other courses were kind of vacant). It was less work than bio and more than kpe.
Horrible. She goes out of her way to make easy units as hard as she can. She expects her first year students to have the knowledge of a PHD. Stay as far away as you can from her classes. I didnt believe the postings but now I understand. Don't make the same mistake I did.
Zoe is probably one of the worst instructors I have had...she makes material that should be simple as hard as she possibly can...she also seems to get enjoyment out of singling people out and humiliating them, this obviously does not make for an open learning environment...not very cool at all
she is the WORST teacher. she doesn't want to help you, and she doesn't try to make it easy to understand. seems like teaching was not her top choice for a job
i like this class, it is not easy but also not really that hard, i like the class discussions, she answers questions like she is interested in them, and the students, thinking of changing my major to psyc
Not helpful, makes learning difficult.
The red head which will stare down her nose at you just to see how bad you are doing. This was one of the worst classes-a sure thing to bring down any persons GPA. Stay away, you are warned.
Do not take a course with her if you are expecting a helpful or good working environment. She is out to demean her students in an attempt to make herself appear smarter (improve her self-esteem by degrading her students). She can not even hold her venomous tongue when her students present!!!
This was a great class, and I'm doing well so far, expect to get a good grade overall. I liked the prof, she is funny.
this is my third class with this professor, she is definitely one of the best if you like to think and come away with a high standards experience, she doesn't suffer fools gladly but she can be pretty funny about it, overall great
Zoe is absolutely impossible. She seems to find great joy in criticizing peoples work, and making a fool out of you or a public example.I would absolutely not recommend this lady. She has some major issues, and is not approachable for help what so ever. Why she is teaching i do not know.
I liked this instructor, found her helpful and clear, she spent lots of time in the course answering questions, I'd rather take classes with 'real' people but if you're going to take online, this is a pretty good experience
avoid all of her classes if possible
I really enjoyed having Zoe as my professor. She was always well organized, her assignments are pretty interesting and she is fair about marking (let me replace my lousy midterm grade). A hint-if the lecture is a bit dull, you can get her telling stories by asking a few questions....use it wisely.
I agree with previous postings, Zoe is sometimes very funny and also easy to get talking about interesting stories (hey, sometimes the lectures are also interesting). I liked the class overall, found the amount of info HUGE but not more than my other science class. Be prepared to work though!
Zoe is a very difficult teacher that expects a massive amount of work. I did learn a ton of material in this class and really enjoyed it but found I had to work harder at it then my other two classes combined. Zoe explains things well and is very clear in her expectations.
I appreciated this instructor. She spends most of the class on lecture material explaining the more confusing concepts, expects you to learn a lot of the text on your own. But oveall good, lectures kept me awake (not always :-), my final grade was actually higher than I thought I could get.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class.

Could not pay attention during lectures and learned more about her personal life than the course material. She relied only on her online supplement to teach the class.
the worst teacher ever, completely stupid and has no remorse for students. she doesnt care about your concerns and the lecture material is so useless...discussions are brutal and she is a ****.
I was interested in this class before, but I ended up hating it. It has a VERY feministic slant, and other opinions are not very welcome (I am a female by the way). The course load was huge and the assignments sometimes unclear. I would not take another course from her. I don't feel I gained useful knowledge.
I liked her, just don't say anything against homosexuality or promote religion and you'll be ok. She is a fair marker and i found her stories to be interesting and relevent to psychology. I would take another class from her. Her tests are strait from the textbook website and the study guide.
I went into this class expecting it to be interesting, and it ended up being the worst psyc class I have ever taken. Your opinions are not allowed unless they follow with Zoe's and to top it off, the text book was torture. She also seems to enjoy trying to make her students feel stupid. I'll never take her again.
Took this online, talk about brutal. Basically you are writing a huge paper and writing a final at the end of each week. You can't have an opinion unless it's like, praising somebody or herself. One little thing that sounds out of line and you get in trouble - so don't bother defending yourself. Final paper was brutal too. SO many guidelines.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Zoe is the worst prof I have ever had. She enjoys making her students feel stupid, and is an incredibly hard marker. half the class was failing. I didn't learn a thing from her class, just did a lot of useless work.....horrible....
I found her class torture. The only prof i have ever had that stuck to the 8-12 hours of hmwk a week/class. Workload was REDICULOUS if you want that grade. Not to mention her exam was tough, it covers the ENTIRE thing and trust me, there was a ton of info! I have to say though, she is a fair marker but i will never take a class with her again.
The online class IS brutual however she is very clear on expectations. Her exam was amazingly difficult. She does mark hard. Yet I like her and her style and she is a fair person. She is extremely intelligent and people way up there are usually tough markers and exam writers.
I found her class resorceful, but it definitely took aot of work and effort. She's one of those give-take professors, but that's cool. She's pretty serious, but every once in awhile you'd see this quirkiness. Overall I enjoyed her class, but getting an awesome grade....well I think it'd take that extra effort and a bit.
This was my first hybrid course. The only way you will do well on quizzes and the final is to read and study the chapters. I made cue cards for every single chapter. The textbooks online resources are also really helpful. Zoe was a great and thorough teacher who has a kind heart and interest in her stduents. Lastly, she doesn't speak in monotone =)
smart funny. work load was adequate.
Took this class online. Huge workload and she makes the material harder than it is by adding tons of info on top of the book material. The quizzes are retarded (40 question in 25 minutes)and the final covers the whole semester, there is a lot lot of information and I felt very overwhelmed with it. Wouldn't take her courses again.
In my opinion Zoe frequently comes up short on respect for others, especially students. In my opinion she totally lacks anything resembling humility, at least in the classroom. If she is capable of empathy, it never showed in the classroom. She does have genuineness, though: I think she's genuinely rude.
Avoid her online class! The online class has an extremely heavy course load, it is ridiculous!
I guarantee you will regret taking Psyc101 on-line with Zoe! The workload is insane, completely unreasonable! I'm a straight A student, and I can't keep up! She adds a huge amount on top of the normal work load (that other teachers give)! She expects way too much and must think we have don't have lives to live, or any other classes to work on!
The recent reviews are bang on. I took 102 online and the workload was insane. She is very particular with her instructions and frequently provides harsh, negative feedback. She is rude to students and does not provide help/clarification. Asking for help prompts a response of "read the directions". Final exam covered the entire course and was hell!
Avoid this on-line class with Zoe! She gives an extremely heavy workload! She clearly doesn't want to teach, if someone asks a question, all she says is - Read pg 160 again. Not helpful at all. For every week you will do a text chapter, her own made up chapter, 3 assignments and one test. Not good when you have 3 other classes!
This woman is an awful professor. The amount of workload she expected for a 100 level class was absolutely ridiculous. She contributed nothing to discussions, no comments or feedback on homework, and did not provide help to students when asked. I tried very hard in the beginning to get good grades and found out that my effort was useless. AVOID!!!!
Wow! This is the worst on-line course! If you are not prepared to spend 3-4 days every week on this one course, don't take it! The workload is huge and Zoe is of no help. I guess if it's on-line, they figure they don't have to teach. Never again, will I take a course with this instructor.
The one thing I learned in this class is what sort of professor I'd never want to become.
Worst psych teacher I've ever had. Expects PhD knowledge and seems to enjoy making students feel stupid. The workload was extremely heavy and difficult when you have 2-3 other classes. Expectations were not clear. Worst class I've ever taken, and I used love psychology. Read the other posts and stay away! Will def. bring down your GPA.
I took the class in person, so I can't comment on Zoe's online courses. She demands a lot from her students, but is a fair marker. She is willing to stay after class to clarify any questions, and is willing to answer questions in class. Good professor, but must do studying out of class. Would take another class with her.
I don't reccomend taking online courses with her, she makes them brutally hard since she has this opinon that all student who take online courses are doing it for the easy way out. She should be teaching first year courses, she would be excellent working with graduate students who are "at her level".
WOW! The workload is ridiculous, I dropped this online class in week three. Judging from the number of people still active in the class, more than half have already withdrawn. Never again. I should have listened to all the people that warned me it would be like this.
The most difficult and unreasonable prof I have ever had. Zoe expected an enormous amount of work and there was never enough time to finish online tests. Found it extremely difficult to get a good grade even though I worked hard.
She started the semester with a story about how much harder school was when she was a student, how easy current students get it.AVOID! Stupidly high workload. Assignments that take hours due every week, cumalative tests that cover EVERYTHING. Midterm was based on a ridiculous amount of material. Unrealistic for a lower level course. Hard marker too
I had her for an ON class, which I really enjoyed. She is crystal clear about the expectations, its all outlined in the syllabus down to the last detail. Its a lot of work, but its because you actually LEARN the material. She's a fair marker if you follow the criteria for assignments. Participate, and you'll do well.
For an intro psych teacher she sure does a good job of discouraging students from wanting to go further. Her lectures are ok, but her online portion of the course is horrible. She of no use if you ask for help and acts as though you are of a inconvenience to her. She is a extremely harsh marker. Hard work does not pay off in this class.
frusterating! I have been at UFV for 5 years decided to change to psychology and deffinitly one of the worst professors.
Funny, helpful, clear, provides constructive criticism, acknowledges hard work, and achievement. Provides encouragement.
Very hard. when asking for help she would just refer you. She doesn't just test you on the chapter. She adds in her own stuff for each chapter which make it difficult.
THIS IS A HYBRID COURSE!!! BEWARE!! Hybrid means she does not comunicate about upcoming assignments in class. Only through online Bb, which you literally MUST check every day. She assigns 3 research assignments per chapter and has 30min timed "quizes". Zoe is very unclear and tells her students to figure it out themselves. Lab was the best part.
Zoe is the WORST prof (if you could even call her that) that I have ever had! She is unclear about what her assignments are on, as well as what to study for exams/quiz's which are all online. You get 30 mins and 40 questions for the quiz's but each question takes 3 minutes to process. I do not recommend. I almost switched degrees.
Tough class with Zoe. It was Hybrid (half the course is entirely online). I found for her assignments/quizzes she didn't inform us on what they were going to be like or what her expectations were. Hard marker for assignments. Online quizzes are timed at 30 minutes for 40 questions, which is super stressful if your a slow reader/test writer.
I am a straight A student and I have never gotten less than an A in any of my university classes..until now. I got a C+ in Zoe's class and I deserved to get a much higher mark. She is an impossible marker and completely unhelpful if you go to office hours. Avoid at all costs..I almost ended up losing my scholarship over this course!
Absolute nightmare of a proff! She brags about being known as a horrible proff, tests are made up of her own material and no necessarily what she teaches in class. Uses Bb religiously, and if you ask her questions she will refer you to check Bb "on your own time".Her timed quizes have glitches and she does not allow you to make up.BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!
The worst professor I have ever met. Do not disagree with her if you wanna do better than C+. Very arrogant, unhelpful and unfriendly. Never again.
Oh my! This was the worst experience I've had with a professor and at UFV. She seemed very arrogant and made the class feel stupid. The exams were incredibly difficult even though I studied for so many days! I still ended up with an A- because I worked so hard (as usual). But I would avoid taking any class with Zoe!
I thought this would be a fascinating course about gender. Instead, it's basically a research class. Zoe insists that every opinion you provide must have a research paper to back it up - if you voice an opinion without someone else's researchexperiment, you get a grade of zero. Does NOT encourage conversation, innovation, new ideas, or thinking.
lots and lots and lots of work. not very helpful, and really rude! self-taught course basically.
Weekly tests. Basic intro course, lots of information to know and learn. Will help you if you ask. Takes weekly attendance. Eight weekly quizzes (one per unit, some units last two weeks), 3 summary assignments and a final exam. Hybrid Class, with an online textbook.
If you consider yourself an average student that studies hard, focuses and tries your best, be aware that these credentials don't apply in Zoe's class. She's rude and condescending when you ask questions, she assigns work at the most inconvenient of time (on holidays etc), and her quizes and tests don't match lecturenoba material. Biggest mistake
Piles of assignments with strict deadlines and weekly tests. This hybrid class ends about 30 min early for "time to work on the online homework" which is a joke. workload is MASSIVE. do NOT have a full course load if you take this class. So long as you study the material the tests are passable. Work isnt difficult, just lots of material to learn.
Without a doubt the worst teacher I have ever had. The only reason she is at UFV is seniority. There is a fitting adjective for this woman; however, I doubt its use is allowed on this site. Please, do yourself, and the school a favour and DO NOT SIGN UP FOR HER CLASS! If no one signs up for her class, perhaps UFV will fire this beast.
She really cared. I didn't do well in this course because I put too much on my plate for this semester, but she layed out everything clearly and was open to any questions. she didn't belittle students. she was the only professor I genuinely loved this semester. She's unique and genuine. Would definitely take another class from her.
Horrible prof, do NOT recommend class with Zoe. Made my semester extremely stressful. Teaches a 100 class like its 3rd4th year.
I'm confused as to the negative reports for Zoe. She's a structured teacher and you know exactly what to expect. LOTS of bonus mark possibilities (most I've ever seen) and she uses the same multiple choice on the final as on quizzes throughout the semester. After 3 years, the two courses I took with her were my two easiest A+'s.
I have taken 3 classes with Zoe all with differing results. She assigns loads of homework and the hybrid class was a lot to handle. It was like taking a class with a lab without the extra credit... When I raised my hand to answer a question she put her head in her hands and shook her head because I got it wrong, I felt that reaction was unnecessary
she assume that all her students knows what she is teaching, wherein not everyone can understand his examples. She takes grammar as a very big criteria in grading all the homework. She always gives low marks and gives tough quizzes.
Horrible. Music psych you learn nothing about music psych... pretty much a research methods class. She is the worst prof- terrible lectures... still have no idea what shes talking about
Was unclear when homework was assigned, and got frustrated when the entire class failed to submit an assignment. Assignments weren't marked, and feedback wasn't given for future projects. She was almost an hour late to the final exam with no explanation. I won't be taking another course with her.
She takes more demerits on grammar errors than structure or content errors.
everything is online. 20+ pages of notes for each lecture and the amount of motivation it takes to finish this "hybrid" course is unbelievable. She's a nice person but the class time could be used more effectively
She was actually really fine. Weekly quizzes were stressful at first, but she averages them in total in lieu of a midterm grade and if you get 5% more on the final, she'll replace that mark for your midterm mark as well. She also lets you have a cheat sheet for the final. It is a tough course, but I was pleasantly surprised with how it went.
Worst teacher I have taken by far. She is rude to students, condescending, and arrogant. She does not have clear criteria and talks down to students when they dont understand. She assigns way to much homework then what can be completed in the time frame, and at inappropriate times. She marks extremely hard and doesnt provide an help to students.
Her course is easy to pass, but spending time in her class is basically death. She's super rude to students, treats them like little kids, and shows up late to class. Made my class stay late a few times. Easy class, difficult prof.
She aims to fail students. Brags about how many students she takes to the conduct registry for "plagiarism" when it's really things like a missed bracket. Her course is 5 courses worth of material and students with 3.8 GPAs fail her class. I call her the Dragon Lady. Stay away.
Hardest class I have ever taken before in my life. Her tests are difficult and its way too much information to be cumulative. She brags about how many students a semester she dings for plagiarism when really it's two words that appear side by side in every day conversation. She's absolutely awful and doesn't care whether he students pass or fail.
Unhelpful, unclear, condescending. Very specific (yet unclear) about what she wants. Uses assignments to deliberately look for "plagiarism". Gives students 0s and threatens to send them to the conduct industry for plagiarism, when really the problem might be citation errors. Very telling that 6 students this semester got 0s on our one assignment.
Expect to do ALOT of reading and note taking. Compared to other psych teachers she is by far the hardest. Treated 101 like a 3rd year course and not entry level. Won't take her class again.
EVERYTHING ON THE EXAM IS NEVER COVERED IN THE CLASS. I read on here before taking the class that she was bad but decided to give it a chance, and I will repeat everything I ignored, DROP THE CLASS WHILE YOU CAN! It all seems fine until the final when its all definitions that aren't in any notes or the text.
She doesn't seem to care whether students learn. No in class learning activities. Strictly lectures. Basically: she talks, you listen, read the text book, memorize, repeat back. For assessments it is only exams. No papers or projects. Only tests. It's the lazy way - easy on her but if you need hands on and projects then you will not learn. Avoid.
Ive had the pleasure to have class with Dr. Zoe Dennison several times and I can confidently say that she is the best professor I have had. She is extremely thorough with her explanations and is always willing to help out of class if needed. I have begun to enjoy psych more than my major of Kinesiology because of this professor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Participation marks require essays with cited sources that you found. Module readings are hard to understand and incredibly long. In her course outline she explains that UFV classes require students to do approximately 9 hours of homework a week, and she tries to take full advantage of this fact. Takes weeks to get any feedback and grades from her.
Amazing teacher, her classes were easy to follow and she would take regular intervals for people to ask questions. She ends her classes early on purpose so that others have a work space and can ask questions. an amazing teacher, i would totally recommend her.
Zoe was the best psychology prof I have had so far! She does make you work for your grade, but all of the assignments are straight to the point and totally doable! Weekly quizzes are given which ultimately prepare you for the midterms and many attempts are allowed on them! She really helps you prepare well and create good study habits! Great prof!
She's a great prof.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. Classes are a waste of time, she teaches you nothing. You are expected to read endless amounts and do roughly 10 hrs of homework a week to learn it yourself. The final had material on it that I had never seen before. I wouldn't wish this class on my worst enemy, do not take it you will hate your life.
I would never take a class with Zoe again. She was a very hard marker, requiring students to know things that she barely explained. Do not expect and easy mark but if you have a background in bio and don't mind arrogant teachers, go ahead!
This online class seemed okay at first, the quizzes could be taken multiple times, but when I did the test we had 40 minutes to complete around 55 questions and the question she were very vague and hard to understand. You have to read everything over and over to understand the content and the tests are still impossible
No time to study for weekly chapter quizzes. She wants great detail answers on concepts that were barely explained in notes. Super interesting content, I have accepted I will likely fail her class and will retake in the following semester with a different prof. I have never (not even close) failed a course before. Huge ego blow for sure.
I am in my third year at ufv, this is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. There so much to learn and Zoe expects you to know everything, tests are way too much detail. For a lower level class she is too hard on students.
Not sure why people on here are giving Zoe bad ratings. I had her for Psychology 101 hybrid and loved it. We focused on the content of the material in class, and all of the other work like the quizzes (why by the can be attempted multiple times to achieve a good grade), midterms are all online. Great content she teaches in detail, loved the class!
I've had Zoe for 2 courses. 101 and 280, both online. Found 101 to be great... trust me... You won't understand why she gets bad reviews until you take her for something else. Extremely hard marker. No time to learn the subject matter. Poorly designed course to begin with... not something that should be online at all. Class avg on final was 49%.
I feel she sets you up for failure. There is not enough time to study the massive amount of content she gives for each test and it seems that every test has so many question that were not in the lectures or readings. The way she words things too makes it difficult to answer as well. Never in my life have I had this low of a grade before!!
I worked very hard in this course and did well on quizzes and most tests once I got the hang of the way she did her tests. Her final was worth over 40% of the grade and was 80 mc, over 40 short answer and 4 , 3-4 paragraph essays in a two hour period. I was not able to even finish the final exam, resulting in the bad grade. Super annoyed
Zoe Dennison is not a great professor, I am a 4th year Science student who took this class an elective. If you ask a question, she does not explain anything, but in fact she replies with horrible responses. The structure of her class is very unorganized. I worked really hard in this class, but still she marked hard. She doesn't care about students.
The grading criteria is weighted very heavily on the final. I do quite well in my other higher level courses but this course hit my GPA hard. I studied considerably for the final & still did poorly.
Great teacher! learned a lot in this class just make sure you attend lectures and stick to the study materials and you'll do fine!
The class was alright. Mostly memorization and multiple choice. Loads and loads of reading. The most reading I've had for an online class, which took a serious amount of time. The text was provided for free, which was by far the best thing of the class!
Zoe is by far the worst online teacher I have had. She puts up way too much information that you have to sift through, and forgets that you actually have a life outside of this one class and other classes you have to work on. Needs to condense her information to one set of notes! Would never take her class again.
The worst online prof you could choose. Too much many unorganized notes with no idea of whats going to be on tests. Never posts in announcements, missed a few assignments because the notification was hard to find.
Zoe is a very tough marker. She makes it difficult to balance other class work along with time outside of school. Knowledge is there, but notes are unorganized and excessive, which makes it hard as an online student to teach the class to yourself. I feel like I am struggling to succeed with her lack of assistance and clarity. I wish you luck.
She expects a ton from her students. I got extremely overwhelmed with the workload to the point where I didn't complete some assignments because I didn't know they existed. There is so much work each week, and I failed some assignments, even though they were only 2%. If you want a class with a low or even reasonable workload, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Easy A in this class
I highly advise against taking PSYC 280 with Zoe. Class is interesting, but her standards are outrageously high. She wants tedious detail in her midterms but does not tell you how much you need, so it leaves you guessing if you've done enough. So many assignments worth 3% or 7/8%. I have an A average overall but will get a B- not for lack of effort
She's a good teacher but I didn't like that all the quizzes and assignments were timed and online. Having the assignments timed really stressed me out because not much time was given and we could only do the assignment once. due to it being online I could not ask any questions about it therefore resulting in a poor mark.
I had Zoe for an online intro to psych class. When I told my mom I was taking this class, she said she also took one of Zoe's classes many years ago and it was awful. I decided to take it anyways, and unfortunately agree with my mom. The time limit on assignments was very short, she marks very toughly, and expects way too much for an intro class.
The multiple choice quizzes throughout the semester are a breeze. If you practice these quizzes prior to the final exam you should pretty my ace that section. The difficulty is the essay and short answer questions. You are given a pool of 60-70 possible essay questions throughout the semester - be prepared to write A LOT to prepare for the exam.
Don't do it. Took an online class and it was awful. You dont get assignments back, just a grade and a post about what some people did wrong so you cant learn from mistakes. HARSH marker. assignment EVERY week, sometimes only 3 day window to complete. nothing is organized well on BB. She's curt and doesnt answer questions. 1 quiz takes over 1 hour
For an online class, the way Zoe organizes things are not very flexible. She gives double cutoff dates for assignments (do one half earlier and do one half later) but will not mark until the final due date. Quizzes are only 15 mins for 20 questions and she seems to pick the most arbitrary details for you to remember. Assignments are pretty easy.
This class should be taken online because all this prof does is reading from the provided materials and yet you have to attend each class
Its a lot of work/ too much for an intro class. You need to read A LOT and remember a lot. She provides in her notes what you need to know from the readings but then includes other stuff on the quizzes/tests (which are very specific examples you wouldnt think are important). Lots of parts on blackboard and it makes it confusing. Dont recommend
For a first year class the workload is a bit heavy but manageable. Answer objectives for each module before doing the topic prep quizzes... this will super helpful when preparing for the final exam. Make sure to do the readings as well. Zoe is very nice and knowledgeable, her class may seem hard if you're not willing to put in the effort.
Hardest thing ever and I'm a straight A student. I took her class after reading all negative reviews here because I like the challenge and to give her a chance. Well, that was a mistake. I'm disappointed. Totally disorganized heavy lectures even with weeks of studying I struggled just to pass the final. I've never seen prof that could care less.
Zoe is good at lectures and tries to engage the class with jokes and occasional group work. Her quizzes are all online and very frustrating to do. The textbook is provided online for free and much of the material there isn't taught at all in class, so it is important to read it. She's not my first pick but she's a solid second or third.
The amount of reading assigned each week along with her own notes was excessive. Weekly quizzes often tested on specific examples in her notes, not on if you know what the concepts mean. For the exam we were only given 2h to complete many m/c, written, matching, and fill in the blank questions. There was also material on the exam we hadn't learned.
The textbook is an online one that is provided for free, which is nice. Be sure to actually read the book though as a lot of it isnt covered in lecture. The assignments, quizzes, and midterms were all online. There are weekly assignments along with topic prep quizzes which can be done as often as you want and are the question bank for the exams.
The reading material each week is extremely lengthly. There are quizzes every two weeks that focus on the smallest details buried within the readings. Good luck. Deadlines are confusing, not clearly marked. Doesn't accept late assignments. Prepare to spend 5x more time on this one online course than all your other courses combined. Pathetic
I couldn't recommend her less. This is my 2nd time taking her and it was a huge mistake. She's so unclear about everything, there's SO MUCH content to sift through and her notes are so hard to follow, she gives barely any feedback, her tests are brutal. Last class I took with her the final exam average was 47%. Don't do it to yourself. Please.
Literally worst prof I have ever had. Don't take any classes with her. Nothing but stress, ridiculous tests each week. Does not specify what she wants, blackboard is all over the place you can't find anything.
Every week you have a quiz based on the textbook, but you can do it over and over until you get 100% sometimes there are assignments every week as well, which is only 10 questions, and they are all fill in the blanks from the textbook so super easy! Exam is worth 47% of your grade so be prepared. i loved having her as a prof, definitely an easy A!
It's easy to go from getting As and Bs literally in her class to suddenly getting an F because she changed her mind on how she is judging your work. Emphasis on APA, but her own version of it. Her grading is unpredictable and seems to be attributed to however she feels that day. The amount of reading she expected each week equal to 2-3 UL classes
Strict at first. Likes those who ask questions, participate in both class and after hours. Communicate lots and build a relationship with her. Do the quizzes as much as possible to get the best grade. Take LOTS of notes especially on what she says. Miss a class then fall behind! She really cares about those who give a rip about the class
Zoe is definitely a tough prof, she has very high expectations of her students and expects you to put in maximum effort. However, she is fair. If you are willing to do the readings, participate, and most importantly, put in effort, you will do very well.
I had Zoe for both Psyc101 and 102 in the same semester. She was encouraging and always open to help outside of class. Good amount of reading on top of the weekly lectures but quizzes are set up so it's possible to see your understanding of the content and work on it (unlimited attempts, all multiple choice and the final pulls from this content).
No lectures were involved. The course is organized through modules and each module has 1 quiz worth 4% (multiple choice) and 1 assignment (usually fill in the blanks). This class is easy, but its a bit time consuming. You get to retake the quizzes as many times to get 30/30. Quiz questions are re used on exam. Textbook is free and online. No tests.
Does not actually teach the class and this profs notes suck so bad. Literally I am teaching myself this course.. Do not know why I am paying to take a class from this prof.
Zoe seems incredibly passionate about what she does, but also seems to expect that her students are masters in the subject with fully photographic memories. Tests every single week on tiny details and examples that she included in her 30K word module notes. Don't bother coming up with your own example, if it isn't her's you'll be marked wrong.
This teacher is suppose to be head of the psych department but based on the methods she uses to teach she does not care about the true world application of learning. It's an onsalught of discussions, ridiculous mini exams (that consist of fill in the blanks that are vague and can be misconstrued) and projects that are graded with all or nothing.
Fair assignments and super interesting content. Zoe is great and very knowledgeable. Not an easy a, but so worth the work
I am so disappointed to see these bad ratings! Zoe is great! She has office hours often and will answer any questions. Yes, there are weekly tests but if you did the reading/notes you'll be fine, honestly, and there are a TON of bonus marks available. Her notes are also filled with interesting examples and funny anecdotes. Loved it!
Lots of reading. Extremely specific quizzes that some students will struggle with. Hard to keep focused while reading her lectures as they are very wordy. Will test on specific examples so you can't make up your own if you want to receive marks. Does post answer keys to quizzes and study guides which are helpful for exams.
if you've ever taken a university class that is actually hard you'll know this isn't a hard class. do the reading and homework and you'll probably do good on the tests... one of the only profs that actually has a helpful syllabus with accurate dates.
Lectures are very heavy and hard to follow along, there are very specific details included in them that are expected to be known for quizzes and tests. Quizzes and tests are fairly difficult, but helpful study guides are given and correct answers to quizzes and tests are also given. Not an easy class, and will have to work to get a good grade.
This was definitely a hard class to take online. Be prepared to read long and wordy lecture notes. Zoes quizzes are really difficult and the class average for the quizzes were low too because of how hard it was. She also doesnt give a lot of time to do the quiz so you really dont have time to think. She is nice and has office hours though.
Zoe is a tough character. However, I figured out that as long as you ask her lots of questions, take interest in her cats and make the effort to speak with her after class she will warm up to you. Be on time, engage with her, show that you care (even if you don't) & you will be ok. The workload honestly wasn't that bad and I'm not a strong student.
I found Dr. Dennison to be an excellent professor. I struggled differentiating between the various types of research, she was great in helping me understand the concepts. I found her online lecture notes to be engaging and concise. I appreciated the clear guidelines on what to study. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed taking her class.
What makes her so difficult is she is a horrible marker.
Beyond confusing. The classroom structure makes it super easy to miss information (EVERYTHING, is done on discussion board). And when you miss information, she doesn't let you correct. Test alerts are also on short notice - and easy to miss if you work full/part-time. Course is heavily discussion based, and discussion criteria is hard to follow.
Shes a great person but expects you to know way to much. Would be helpful if her exams had multiple choice sections instead of all of it being 100% recall. Be ready for a lot of quizzes
I found Zoe's lecture notes a bit confusing and overly wordy. I was not a fan of certain rules she had such as no phones/laptops in class. Was odd for a uni course. However, she is fair. Used a free online textbook. Lots of opportunities to do bonus assignments. Weekly quizzes so marks were spread out. Probably wont take her again but she was ok.
Hardest professor for psyc. There are weekly quizzes and she is a very tough grader and if she thinks any answer is plagiarized, she will give you an automatic zero but won't elaborate. Midterms and final exams are brutal. At least she gives a free PDF of the required textbook and options for extra credit.
I think Zoe expects way too much from her 202 students. There is so much material that it because extremely stressful very fast. She expects you to understand ideas/concepts that you are still trying to grasp especially as only a second year student. She is a smart prof and knows her stuff, but she is a lot.
She is a super entertaining lecturer and is very approachable. She wants to help you succeed. However, on the midterm many people put down the same wrong answer and instead of considering that she needed to clarify that point better, she accused us of plagiarizing wrong answers from each other! Also her tests are full of vague fill in the blanks.
You can tell that she is very knowledgeable. Her tests are short on time and very wordy. She expects you to have everything in your own words (which is hard with concepts/terms) but then states she wants the answers to be specifically from the textbook/notes. Terrible communication and no help. Accuses everyone of plagiarizing often.
You can tell Zoe puts a lot of work into her lectures and expects an adequate return from students. There is a lot of information to absorb in this class, and with that in mind, I think she organized it all very well. The exams (midterms/final) definitely require that you truly understand the content as you must write original material on it all.
Zoe was actually a really good prof, u can tell she cares and wants to teach but I can see how the class would get overwhelming. She gives you a study guide for all mid terms, final and 'bell ringer' tests she has which is very helpful. Despite her class being difficult, she made it quite interesting and if u work hard it shouldn't be a problem!
Lengthy notes and confusing layout of the virtual classroom. Lots of reading. Tests that were mainly obscure fill in the blanks. Was it a horribly difficult class? No. However, will you get a good grade without a lot of work? Also no. Would not take her again due to confusion with navigating the online classroom but not as terrible as people say.
Weekly Quizzes, 2 Mini-Midterms, and a Final Exam. She expects you to know everything that was taught. She doesn't allow you to write original examples to explain the concepts you learned, she wants you to use the examples from the textbook. Her exams are short but they're difficult. She's very picky with her marking and not helpful (in my case).
Ridiculous expectations for the final exam with a required mark of 50% (on the final) to pass the course. It requires at a minimum 11 paragraphs with another 70 or so multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank questions given in a 3hr time slot. No other prof requires this amount of work on a final in a 3hr time slot, others would give 1-2 days.
Not worth it. Strict grading, lots of reading, & requires a lot of time to do ok. Seems to care (accessible, bonus point opportunities) but has unrealistic expectations. Final exam 18 short/8 essay Qs were given beforehand but Qs at test time chosen at random. Preparing for all Qs would take too much time. Felt like taking 3 classes in 1. Avoid.
I hated this class. I had to take it for the program requirements but now I am re-thinking my degree plan. I thought I liked Psychology, but after taking Zoe's class I am not sure. She is not supportive, has very difficult exams, and responds very rudely to emails. Not recommended. I am totally re-thinking my degree plan because of her.
This is a lecture/lab class. For the lectures, Zoe gives heavy amounts of reading and 6 quizzes worth 3% each. They are online but challenging even though she tells you what materials to study beforehand. I haven't taken the midterm yet but seeing the quizzes, it is going to be hard. Study A LOT. It is not an enjoyable class.
Zoe is really nice and is very personable. She makes class enjoyable while you're there. However, her lecture notes are quite long and extensive. It feels impossible to sift through her notes to pick out the core concepts because with all of her examples included, it all seems important. Fill in the blanks are used A LOT on her tests/quizzes.
Honestly Dr. Dennison may bring a lot to the table in terms of notes, lectures, etc., but she also gives plenty of opportunity to get bonus marks. She believed in me when I was having trouble passing the class by giving me another chance and it paid off with the grade. Simply do the work, put in the effort, communicate with her, and you'll do fine!
Zoe is a really great prof and you can tell she knows her stuff. I appreciated the bonus assignments she offered to boost grades, and overall I learned a lot! That being said, this class is really heavy. I ended up needing to drop another class to keep up with this one.
I found this class really fascinating! Zoe gives great, detailed lectures, and you can tell she is passionate about the subject. If you take this class, make sure you have lots of time to study, as there is A LOT of content to memorize.
I was scared to take this course as I had heard it was hard, but it was fine in the end. The course is clear, the prof's lectures were easy to follow, gave bonus opportunities, overall great!
Brain dissection were great, no papers, lectures had a lot of content but prof puts all the notes online. Nice and sometimes funny.
I really appreciated Zoe's help when I took this class, she helped me figure out what I needed for my degree and seemed to really care. Lectures/readings were long but interesting and I actually learned something
Zoe was very reassuring about the project, helped a lot at the beginning, quizzes were fine, final exam came right from the study guide. Zoe is nice, tells funny stories, lots of in class activities to break up the lecture.
Zoe's course helped me understand the way I think about gender and research. It was super well orgamized, really interesting and balanced and I learned so much.Workload is spread over two week modules, with small assignments (but not a paper). Highly recommend.
I love Zoe as a prof. She cares, is accessible, and wants you to do well. I found it a little confusing navigating the online classroom as information was pulled from various sources at times, which made it hard to synthesize. However, her quizzes, assignments and exams are always very fair. She is funny and kind. I respect her a lot.
I do not recommend her for first year students taking a full 5 class course load. she is a nice person this is nothing against her personally,I just did not like her class. she is a very hard marker for first year students,I had no trouble in any of my classes except for hers. midterm and final are very difficult.a class that causes lots of stress!
Quizzes every week. Her lectures are boring and confusing. Do not recommend to take her class unless you love to read pages of notes plus powerpoint lectures every week. Not an easy grader either.
so much material given, that it becomes unhelpful and overwhelming. seems to care and it's very knowledgable about the material but is so picky and a hard marker
Everything is on BB and everything is organized so you can navigate the class easily. However, there are a lot of readings, and it is hard to understand what is important. There are quizzes every two weeks, not hard. She provides a study guide before in-person tests. I would not suggest her class unless you are confident you can read a lot.
This is my 2nd time in Dr. Dennison's class. She structures her tests/quizzes to be hard to avoid easy cheating online, but also allows it to be open book (and in person, you get to bring a cheat sheet) because you can't really police cheating online. It is a difficult class that requires studying, but she is a solid prof. Highly recommend.
Zoe is a great professor her lectures are interesting and she is always there to help, I wish she did office hours instead of discussion board posts or give an email since she takes a couple of days to reply. She does mark a bit harsh for the in-class participation exercises but with midterms, she's more lenient. Make sure to study!
Zoe provides study quizzes, worksheets, participation exercises, midterm/finals study guides & weekly announcements/reminders in blackboard. All of the multiple choice Q's on tests are from the online study quizzes she posts. Her written Q's require you to have a great understanding of the content, which can be difficult. study & you will do well!
worst prof I have ever had !
Entertaining lectures, quizzes a worksheets each week online (take quizzes endless times), INCREDIBLE midterm+final study guide, responds very fast to emails. She rlly cares a wants everyone to do well, and gives examples that stick with you. The 1st day she gave off a very scary vibe, but warmed up to my class pretty fast. Overall, awesome teacher
I took her psyc of gender course and she literally inspired me to continue in gender research and she helped me with my grad school applications. she changed my path. yes, there's readings and assignments lol welcome to university. If zoe has zero fans, im dead
Zoe Dennison is incredibly knowledgeable and explains difficult concepts well. Her PSYC gender course is incredibly well researched. She allows 1 page sheet of notes for midterm/exam and with the help of that sheet, I aced both exams. The assignments are not difficult, and there's no essays- you just have to put actual thought into the topics.
study quizzes v helpful, repeat if you want to, highest grade used !! notes were posted after the lecture not just ppoint, great when I got sick and missed 2 lectures, study guides for midterm and final are the GOAT, also showed Zoe cared about students in her class.good examples helped a lot also but do study for exams
Zoe's class is a lot of work, but engaging and rewarding. Tough grader, but offers helpful bonuses. Unstuck ai was great for prepping. Overall, really interesting and worthwhile, just budget your time.
The worst prof ever, never taking a class with her again. She made me want to switch programs.
SO MUCH READING, material and complex topics to sift through. It's hard to focus on what is important and what to retain lest everything she covers.. which isn't reasonable these days.
This prof needs to pay for therapy with the way she made me miserable. Even if you are interested in the course she is teaching, don't take her class because she will make you hate the topic. She also takes ages to grade stuff, and even when she does, you don't get any feedback. Just don't take her; trust me, do not take her.
Zoe expects you to do a ton of reading and expects you to remember it. I agree with another user who said it's like taking multiple courses at once with her class. She got mad at our class because not everyone had done the assigned readings. Her exams are extremely difficult. I will never have a class with her again. Do not take her, she's awful.
This is the second online course I have taken with Zoe. Always clear and I love how her courses are organized. Also so glad to have the cheat sheet and study guide for exams. Lots of info on language I had never thought about.
Taking this course for the second time (with a different prof), working out better this time around. Appreciate the quizzes to retake over and over and the exam guide, and class is usually interesting, but tbh some topics do drag on. Psyc is a lot of info, but she gives 'back-up notes' if you miss a class which is so helpful!!
gives us clear notes, i like them but defiantly need to read, quizzes are open book, LOVE the study guide and cheat sheet (reason for my good grade) no big paper just small assignments.
The professor had many situations where she was extremely disrespectful. She does not go by the expected teacher guidelines of how any student should have the right to be treated. If you have feelings I would not recommend taking her course.
For the LOVE of god do not take her. Ignore the good reviews. This professor belittles, bullies and humiliates her students in class. I have not been on the receiving end, but have seen her make multiple students cry in class. She takes ages to grade, her feedback and emails are rude, too much irrelevant content that "we must know" and so much more
There is so much I have to say, but the thing that annoyed me the MOST is that it does not matter if you know/understand her content, if you do not use her specific examples and words from her content its an automatic 0. Professors normally want their students to learn content, she wants us to memorize her work, its like a weird ego boost.
Worst professor ever, never taking her again.
DONT ever take this professor. Worst professor i've ever had. Doesn't teach. Her 'notes' upload automatically each week. Course's material is VERY heavy, as well as extensive assignments. About linguistics. Wants you to use her examples word for word. Such a hard marker, and rude with her feedback. Genuinely hated my life while doing this course.
No. No. NO!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS unless you hate yourself
I took this class despite the bad comments, thinking I could get through it, but NO! This teacher expects you to read many articles irrelevant to the course material. There's an optional Zoom discussion if you dont do it you have to write an essay AFTER the midterm, while the midterm contains 4-6 essay questions. Content is not interesting.
I liked Zoe's classes. I took both 101 and 102. Her study quizzes are very useful and the notes she posts as well are very helpful. She also makes sure to give you learning objectives. If you do the work, study the objectives and read the text readings you'll get an A. Her class is not very hard.
She is the most condescending teacher not allowed laptops full lectures before exams
She is highly knowledgeable in Psycholinguistics and clearly well-versed in her field. However, her teaching style can be challenging at the undergraduate level due to dense concepts and heavy reading loads. The modules use complex terms and unclear language, and without live sessions, the course becomes difficult to navigate independently.
She was my favourite prof! Can be snarky but I learned a lot from her classes and she gave lots of chances for bonus marks. Posts lectures and free textbook online. Quiz, worksheet and assignment for each module, midterm and final. Lots of work but I thought it was worth it, she's a little rude but she is helpful if you actually talk to her
Just awful
Worst prof i have taken in my 3 years at ufv. Each week you would be tested on the readings of the week which included her notes and 5 to 6 research papers. She would not give any lecture slides, and even in her lectures, she would go over only the definitions and discourage is from taking notes. She wants to make your life miserable.
you can answer a question completely right by writing the definition of a concept/example to prove you understand it but if u don't answer her questions in the exact same wording she used in her lecture slides consider it wrong! all she cares about is looking smart and making her students feel small and insecure.
i took this class 2 years ago and still now recall how brutal her exams were for a 100 level class. I have never had an exam take me the whole 3 hours allotted except from Zoe. The class was harder than it needed to be in my opinion
Honestly if you just make an effort to talk to her or be nice, she'll reciprocate that behaviour. "do onto others..." Yes she has lots of tests but she gives you ample warning and study guides. Her lectures can be entertaining and funny if you let them be. I do agree, her exams were difficult and long. Extra credit was possible.
Very hard grader. Every week expected to read over her notes on course content as well as her notes on a bunch of research papers, power points and her own textbook. Gives no feedback on individual assignments, but does a weekly announcement where every one was accused of using AI, every week!
