She didnt show up for class very often due to "personal reasons", but the tests & writing assignments were very simple. Sadly - didnt learn much though. :(
Habitually late. Often goes on tangents. If you're looking to actually learn something, pick another teacher.
Very knowledgeable and wants to ignite interest in the students, but often went on tangents which were interesting, but not relevant to the class. Interesting lady, doesn't inspire much learning.
I love zoe! She makes class interesting. very very knowledgable about the clinical pychology world, offers great advice and tips about applying to grad prgrams and psy d/ph d programs. shes great, besdies the tardiness
Zoe's fun, and brilliant. And I have a big crush on her brain...The class is not that hard, but I would recommend going to lecture because it's entertaining and the readings help on the test, which half the class failed. Show up and you'll get an easy "A."
Zoe is the most unprofessional teacher I have ever had. She is LATE to every class period which I usually do not care about but when the class is 50 min long and she goes off on tangents it makes going to class seem useless. Her powerpoint slides are absurd and never have anything to do with what she puts on the final.
Such a creative and intelligent soul. Is very understanding and lenient. hard to get a hold of her through email. I recommend setting up a time to meet. try to do good on every assignment and exam (because there isn't a lot)or you'll be stuck doing a lot of extra credit. interesting lectures, tough concepts.
great great great. go to class because there is no midterm! 5 papers that are easy and helpful.
To get a good grade 1) you have to attend lectures, 2) you have to read assignments, 3) you have to ask questions, 4) if you're confused, you have to make an appointment to meet with the prof. or the TA's. Zoe gives enough extra credit to bump you up a grade. You won't get an A simply by attending lectures. You have to try; this isn't grade schl
Learned the theorist covered so well, that in one of my grad school interviews I was asked to compare/contrast a few different orintations and give my opinion as to which I liked & why- I actually impressed myself with my answer (not to mention the panel)! My response was soley informed by her lectures.
1-5 mins late is standard for her. Easy=B, Work=A. Engaging lectures, made learning diagnosis easier by sharing her experience working with clients in previous training & background that had those disorders (ie: tangents but very cool!). Powerpoints used imagery & testimonials to convey the worldview of those with many disorders (ex: anorexia).
I'm so glad there is a teacher on campus who actually prefers to NOT give multiple choice tests. She basically wants you to understand the general information, as opposed to remembering minor unnecessary tricky details from the textbook. The lectures are actually fun too!
I learned a LOT in this class, and had no homework! There was one Final "Reaction" Paper, but that was it. Such a great teacher: interesting, engaging, enthusiastic, and open-minded. Sparked debate and further analyzing of class topics. I definitely recommend Zoe. Also, doesn't require us to buy an expensive textbook!
fun cool great take to enjoy a class
WOW! such a great class. She really knows what she is talking about. No homework and 2 exams during the class. She used a really cheap reader, not a text so that was nice. She is very down-to-earth and is a great professor. all powerpoints are online and exams were take-home.
she is the most unprofessional teacher ever! always late to class! even cancels class due to "personal reasons." always goes off on a tangent and never finishes lectures. she was late to give back our midterms and grades. also took forever to post up the take home midterms.just the worst teacher i've ever had!!! i don't recommend taking her at all!
I'm not a psychology major.Just took this class for personal growth and love it. Professor's really really cool and clear. Draws you in with really interesting and funny examples. She also exudes a "realness" to her. The class requires 2 easy midterms and a final. Try out psych with her, you'll get something worthwhile.
I don't feel that I've learned much. Classes were canceled often and the exams were very easy. But she is a fun teacher and is interesting to listen to. I'm sure she is more useful and helpful if you come to her office hours or ask questions in class.
Smart, likeable lecturer with terrific outfits, but not much substance to this course. Heavy use of crappy powerpoints. Several classes were "film strips". No outside reading required. Take home midterm and final.
She is a great lecturer. This class made me interested in Psychodynamic theory. Very knowledgeable about clinical psychology.
Although she was an interesting lecturer, she was consistently 15 minutes late to class and cancelled class a few times without any notice. Her grades are based off of a take home midterm and final. I emailed her TWICE after the final asking for feedback and never received an answer back. She gives a grade without any feedback! Unprofessional.
very easy.. i didn't buy the book and only attend about 5 classes (even left early). 2 papers, midter & final. I got an A- and didn't learn a thing from this class. if u want an easy class. take i.
If you are interested in clinical psychology this is a great class to take.Zoe really loves the subject and it shows in her lectures. Even though it was a 3 hour class, it never felt like it. The grade was based on two take home essays. Attending lectures and reading the readings will allow for an easy A. Just show them you understood the topics.
I love her. Very energetic and loves the topic. Super easy!!! and does not require you to purchase a 200 dollar book which is fantastic. Take home exams and she is very lenient.
I took Work Life Stress with her Fall 2012, it was her first semester to teach that particular course. It was excellent! I had her from 7-10p right after a 4-7p lecture. Her energy was enough to keep everyone alert. If you are leery about taking a night class, don't be, but make sure you take Zoe!
Sooo easy. Take it! She is a remarkable lady and has a wealth of knowledge!
Super fun class. Easy A just pay attention and write the 2 papers and you'll get an A
2 take home essays and attendance not required! Can't complain at all! So easy!
Zoe has this great energy about her. She's so chill and extremely knowledgeable! You must take her for PSY 451 and not any other instructor but her! I can't wait to take another class taught by her!
Zoe is so lenient about turning in our assignments in late! She even let us turn in our midterm at the final! She's so understanding and not so strict like other professors!
Zoe's class is easy as long as you show that you understand what she lectures about so it is important to come to class and pay attention or you won't understand the powerpoint slides. All the students dislike that she is unresponsive to e-mails.
Absolutely useless teacher if you are thinking of attending grad school. Lectures consist of information from wikipedia, the midterm and final essays aren't even read particularly if you befriend her, and if you want to ask her anything good luck to you because she doesn't respond to email at all.
super easy.! one take home midterm & take home final. no book required
Very easy course but if you want to learn something in an academic manner, stay away! Long, unscientific and personalized discussions.
Terrible instructor. Consistently late. Rambling, irrelevant "lectures". Was perpetually several weeks behind the syllabus due to her incessant tangents and chronic tardiness. Avoid this "instructor" if you want to learn anything, or intend to go to any manner of graduate school in psychology. Poorest lecturer I've ever had.
I really, really like Zoe as a person but I really didn't feel like this class was worth my time. If she didn't take attendance I wouldn't have gone because I had other VERY demanding classes. With that said, she is incredibly understanding, thoughtful, and loving. Take her class if you need a break from crazy stressful classes and just need an A
When I started this class I was so excited I didn't even mind a 3 hour night class. But as the weeks went on I was realizing I wasn't learning much. Lectures quickly got muddled with personal stories and tangents. So many TA's and all were useless. It was easy, but not worthwhile for my major. She seems like a great person, but professor? Meh.
I've taken many of Zoe's classes and she is a phenomenal professor. Talks about a lot of important topics. Only assigns 2 papers per semester. Sometimes she can go off topic and seem unorganized, but she shares a lot of information that is interesting. Very empathetic and compassionate with her students.
Professor Zoe is amazing because she doesn't limit herself to solely studying motivation in the context of classical psychology. She brings to the lecture many contemporary issues in our society and ties it with psychological theory. She also cares about students and what they have to say/think; she respects a multitude of differing viewpoints.
Zoe understands and sympathizes with the struggles of being an SFSU student. She genuinely cares for her students and it shows in her lectures, which I agree can get a little tangential and off topic. She is personable, loving, albeit a little unorganized. Takes attendance most of the time, doesn't really factor much. Easy papers, easy reading.
Martell's class is very lecture heavy. It consists of two papers, which she mostly grades as A's. There are four or so questions you answer in 2 pages double spaced. Easy to pass. Martell is very knowledgable and an interesting lady. I enjoyed the lectures, but much of it felt like more of a biography than theories of personality.
Her lectures go into tangents where they have nothing to do with the class, she spends time talking about her politics if it has to do with the topic of the week. She tends to miss class if having a bad day but it won't effect the work. Just not worth spending three hours once a week.
She is one of the best teachers at sfsu. Take her without thinking!
Spectacular teacher! I have benefitted immensely by taking her Psychology of Stress course. She is extremely intelligent, open minded, makes fair points, and has so many interesting things to say about the topics. As a senior, I can say this class was easily within my top five favorite classes throughout the years even though I'm not a Psy major.
Unless you fall in love with her lectures you should probably bring a laptop/notebook with something else to do in class. Personally, I just can't listen to her for the full period. We're graded by two papers, which focus on content more than grammar, spelling, etc. If you don't do well on them, you can redo them to improve your grade.
3 hours aside, I loved this class. Zoe is incredibly sweet and is more down-to-earth than a lot of professors here. She does tangent, but it won't hurt your grade or anything. The only assignments are two take-home tests with short essay prompts. Lecture was pretty interesting material. I feel like I'm in a counseling session listening to her talk.
She goes off topic A LOT and let's her TA take the reigns which I don't really like because she is not the most informative or approachable. I suggest bringing a laptop with you to class, it can get pretty dry. Also be prepared to hear a lot about her vegan diet. The two essays are easy, just have her grade it not her TA.
Very brilliant woman, also very tangential. Class can be both riveting and mind-numbing depending on what we are talking about. Lots of respect for Zoe, though. She clearly is very well educated and has a deep passion for the subject matter.
She's AMAZING. Take this class to hear amazing lectures and to only be graded on two papers that are four-five pages each. Even though this class was three hours long I brought my laptop and was totally fine. She's amazing and sweet, take her
Zoe is such an inspiring professor! She has a whole new approach to how she teaches courses you might have already taken at your community college or lower division. I can't recommend her enough. Two easy reasonable papers and all you have to do after that is be at the lectures to learn!
The class is three hours long, it could get a little boring. However, Zoe is really passion about the topic and she ACTUALLY knows what is she talking about. If she does not know the answer, she will find it for you. I highly recommend this professor because this topic is difficult and you will need her to make it easier for you.
This class is simply easy, you grade is based on your attendance and two paper. As long as you do not copy and paste, and actually try for your paper you can get an A in this class easy. This is what I call a breathing class. If you know how to breath, you can get an A.
The professor is really nice, but I can't believe what a joke the class was. The TA told me "as long as you write the essay, you'll have an A." Graded on two essays only. Don't take this class if you want to learn, but if you want the easy A go for it. Money wasted on this class.
Very easy! I warn you that she speaks so much because she doesnt require a textbook. You are graded by attendance and 2 papers for the semester with 2 prompts you have to choose for both the midterm/final (minimum of 2 pages for each prompt you write). This is a class where you dont have to stress & you learn from experiences and lecture slides!
Attendance is mandatory. Just go to class and do the 2 papers and that is all you need to do. The 2 papers you need to write are for midterm and final therefor no tests were given. No homework. Flexible and understanding teacher.
Not a difficult class if you go to class every week. You will learn a lot if you actually care about the topic. It is an easy A if you do not miss class and put very minimum effort into this course.
DO NOT take this class, unbelievable joke, half the time when Zoe came in I was pretty sure she was high on something. She and her 6 TA's emphasis on 6 took about 2 months to grade our short papers. Zoe and her TA's went on 24/7 Trump rants and personal business. It is not what I signed up for. I came to learn on the topic that was promised.
AVOID this class at all costs. Her and her TA's are so unorganized and really do not have a clue how to teach a class. The class was basically her and her co-lecturer teaching their TA's instead of the other students. I have e-mailed them four times this past semester and never received an e-mail back. It was truly a waste of my time.
Attendance is mandatory, and there are two five paged essays, so you can easily get an A. Zoe had another person teach alongside her, and they both were very unorganized. For the first month of class, there was no schedule for anything. Also for a three hour class starting at 7pm, it was extremely boring. I always got sidetracked on my laptop.
She is an easy grader, but she always shows up late to class. Class usually starts at 4:00 P.M. and she shows up at 5:30-5:45 and it seems like she doesn't care about other's time.
Zoe is a brilliant professor. If you actually care about the topics, you can gain so much from this course. If you are someone who isn't passionate about psychology, don't waste your time. Put down your cell phone and listen to the lectures, because they are inspired.
All lecture and attendance matters. TAs thinks the class is filled with 5th graders and will talk to you like you are one. No electronics otherwise they'll get super duper booty which is stupid considering im the one paying for the class not them. gtfo. if youre cool with that its an easy A, two papers (midterm and final), no other homework given.
She is by far the worst teacher i have ever gotten. I was looking forward to this class and I'm sorry to say I've taken nothing from it. She is expecting a midterm paper and gave 1 days worth of lecture all semester. She came in overwhelmed with the Cornavirus and instead of leading us through a difficult time, she abandoned the class.
zoe showed up late to class everytime. at least 30-60 mins late. she had her ta's sit with the students to see if they were on their phones would kick them out. barely talk about the subject at all but its an easy A if you just do the papers. the midterms are easily graded.
Zoe is very knowledgeable and her lectures are interesting. Having said that, she always came to class late and wasted a lot of our time. I thought this was very inconsiderate and unfair, considering attendance was mandatory. Now with remote instruction, she has basically abandoned the class and only left us with power points to learn off of.
Covid times: class was canceled often, we talked about current events, & show up to class if you can. You're graded on 2 papers & the topics are fairly easy. SUPER empathetic & caring person especially during these times. Class may have felt scattered but easy to pass & I enjoyed coming to class. Not sure what I learned in the class but loved her
Easy A. Course was Asynchronous, zoom meetings were optional, no HW or weekly posts, and the only work you will ever do, are two 5 page essays (Midterm and Final). From my experience taking several classes with her, meet the essay word requirements and deadline, and you're getting an A. Martell's classes are the easiest Psych courses in SFSU.
Zoe is so kind and amazing. I took her for abnormal psych, motivation, work-life stress, and GWAR! I really enjoyed her classes. There are no tests, no quizzes, and no homework only papers and as for all her classes (except gwar) she grades on the papers based on content, not formatting. She is an awesome professor! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Although the professor's preoccupancy with personal matters clouded my complete sense of the classes' natures, I would say that she is an alright professor. Many of the lectures were canceled, but the ones I attended were incredibly slow and boring. I was interested in the course topics but was forced-fed lecture slides. Graded on only two papers.
Easy A. If you email her expect no response, you have a better bet emailing her dozen TAs instead. Never meets deadline for grades and your transcript will consecutively say grade change. Class is always cancelled and I mean ALWAYS. Super nice and genuine Professor, but absolutely no sense of direction in the class. Only graded on 3 papers.
If you want to actually learn this isn't the class for you. I never attended a single lecture and got an A. Only assigned 2 essays which were easy to do. At one point, I found I was even enrolled in this class.
Professor Martell is very passionate about many things. This causes her to start discussing a lot of her views on certain subjects like politics and healthcare. As long as you attend her class with an open mind or agree to disagree, her strong opinions won't affect you. She seems friendly and fairly educated on the topics that she discusses. Easy A
For my experience of taking Professor martell in Psy 465 work life stress, It was pretty easy doing JUST 2 essays in the entire semester and nothing else. This class is an easy dub if you do the essays in advance time. I legit stop showing up to the online sessions in the last 2-3 sessions of the semester.
She rambles one for most of the class instead of teaching the lecture material. One time she spoke to one student for over an hour of the class time regarding the student's personal life. Exams are tough because she does not provide the information needed to do the exam. She uploaded the exam a week later than the syllabus. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Martell doesn't grade anything, instead having TAs do it all. Unfortunately they are inconsistent in their grading. No guidance is given from Martell. Essays are given with unclear instructions. I'd suggest attending for an extra semester instead of taking her class, if it is the only one open. It is open still for a reason.
I took her for my fall semester in 2022 and it was super easy! I thought it would be easy so I retook her class and she started giving out exams. They are so difficult! She lacks on uploading the exams and they don't make sense. We only get one 10 minute break from the 2 hours and 45 minutes of lecture. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
This is my second class with Prof Zoe Martell, like others before me have echoed -- if you truly want to learn, avoid her classes at all costs. However, if you just want the credit and a passing grade, go for it. She will never respond to emails, her countless TAs have a HUGE chip on their shoulder and are extremely unhelpful if you need support.
READ! IF YOU'RE A PSYCH MAJOR, YOU'LL HAVE ALREADY LEARNED EVERYTHING SHE TEACHES, WHICH IS GREAT IF YOU WANT TO TAKE 4 TESTS AND GET AN A. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN NEW MATERIAL, THIS ISN'T THE TEACHER. SHE'S NICE BUT DOES SEEM DISORGANIZED, THAT USUALLY WORKS TO A STUDENTS ADVANTAGE IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A PAINLESS A, WHILE TAKING A FULL COURSE LOAD.
These 1-star reviews sound really whiny tbh. Prof Martell is great! I could only attend through the recordings and I got A's. She gives 2 attempts on the exams and a month to finish. It's not rocket science. Just don't be lazy and you'll get an A. I'm guessing the 1-star reviews are from the same folks who got caught cheating on Discord lmao
You will either love or hate the way she teaches. I hated how unorganized the lectures were and how dysfunctional the exams she created felt. The times the tests opened would be arbitrary and announced through an email and the 3 out of 5 exams were backloaded to the last few weeks of class. She feels out of touch and I don't recommend at all.
Professor Martell seems like a great person but I didn't find her class to be of any help for me. Grades are made up of 5 exams and because she is new to giving exams they were pretty unfair. All exams except for one were "select all that apply" formatted questions with upwards of 10-15 selections to choose from on each question. Can't recommend it
I have taken several of her classes, *HOWEVER: I have heard her class setup has changed(and gotten more difficult). This class had* downloadable power points, optional attendance for Zoom, and quizzes on lecture material. Some quizzes recycled questions. There were 3 quizzes and 1 final. Her TAs did most of the grading/communication.
I have taken many of her classes, *HOWEVER: I heard her class setup changed(gotten harder). This class had* downloadable power points, opt attendance-Zoom, and two papers only (midterm/final). Midterm was on self-report logs/class stuff. Final was on class material. TAs did most of the grading/communication. Ended up not grading 1 ppr.
I have taken many of her classes, *HOWEVER: I heard her class setup changed(gotten harder). This class had* downloadable power points, opt attendance-Zoom, and 4 exams(3 + final). Recycled material on some quizzes TAs did most of the grading/communication.
Ive taken many of her classes, *HOWEVER: I heard her class setup changed(gotten harder). This class had* downloadable power points, opt attendance-Zoom, and 2 papers(midterm/final). Midterm was on covid impact/class stuff. Final was on impact of / example of class material IRL. TAs did most of the grading/communication. Didnt grade 1 ppr.
Martell is a fantastic lecturer, knowledgeable and highly experienced. She responds with her whole heart and brain to every question. The worst students complained they only got multiple tries to take a couple multi choice tests and they still cheated. I took her Work Life Stress too and loved it. She has almost 500 students a semester too.
