do the hws its key in the class and the midterms are all based on the hws. The midterms are word for word from the hws and all you need to do is study those until the exam.
She takes attendance for lectures and does pop quizzes. The lectures consisted of her writing on a whiteboard for an hour and just interacting with the first row of students who were also the only ones who could see and hear her. Overall her assignments seemed disorganized and unclear. She is understanding and willing to help if you ask.
Never again. Lectures went on and on and on. Exams were pretty easy, let us have cheat sheets. Only learned some things because the TAs were really helpful.
Really bad at teaching. Lectures consist of her writing on the whiteboard the entire time, while going way too fast and erasing it right away, not giving you enough time to write anything down. She also gets mad if we don't know what a certain equation means, after the second time we've seen it. Don't take her class unless it's your last option.
physics 008. midterms are lecture questions (which are done for EXTRA CREDIT!) & problems from the hw. w/ a cheat sheet, write down word problems from the hw up until the test (w/ proper problem solving steps) and ur good. quiz 1 a week in disc, but prblms are in annotated worksheet from week prior. if i had known this, I woulda passed w/ an A easy
I showed up to two lectures and she taught some of the most basic physics concepts wrong so I just never showed up again. Sometimes the solutions she'd give for practice problems were wrong and I'd have to help my friends out with it. Overall if you do get her as a professor I'd recommend teaching yourself (organic chemistry tutor got me an A)
She's a pretty decent lecturer. Her lectures are bit confusing but the annotated worksheets she posts are helpful. She also gives a lot of extra credit and allows you to use notes during the exams. If you put in effort and do the extra credit opportunities then you'll be good. Would definitely take again.
She had decent lectures, but relies too heavily on Macmillan when it came to homework/quiz/test.
This professor doesn't know how to teach. Inconsistent with her grading so leniency is dependent on TA, thick accent leads to misunderstanding, rude to students, jumps everywhere with explanations, and is very unwilling to help on any homework questions during office hours. Take it at community or subscribe to The Chemistry Tutor if you want an A.
The lectures are hard to understand. She kind of assumes that we already know the topic. She does rely a lot on the TA's and the TA's do not care that much as well. She is nice and friendly, but she just does not teach very well.
Professor Vafapour is amazing. Although she teaches quick, and has a slight accent, she is still understandable, and extremely willing to reexplain concepts and is always willing to help students. She offers numerous extra credit opportunities, and ensures we have the resources needed to pass exams. Homework is long but beneficial. Overall Great!
Difficult to understand at times. Explains things with heavy math and equations rather than logic and physical intuition. Condescending to students.
+: Plenty of extra credit and a generous curve (1sign) -: Hard to follow due to accent and speed; difficult hw late in the semester, no demos in class Tips: Attend all classes and pay attention (sit in the front 3 rows), be comfortable with algebra, read the textbook, practice lecture quizes, wkshts, and disc. quizes. spread hw not procrastinate= A
If you've taken AP physics in high school and did alright you'll probably do alright here. This is a class that takes a lot of studying and communication with others if you want an A. The professor is amazing and caring for each student but the subject can be hard to understand with little to no prior experience. There is a lot of extra credit too.
Considering that I have already taken AP Physics in high school and that her explanations of basic concepts even confuse me, she's not good at teaching at all. I have to explain almost everything to my peers just for them to grasp her nonsensical yapping sessions. Don't take this wrong, she's a wonderful person, and she cares about her students.
If you do the HW you can and will perform on the quizzes and tests.
she gives a lot of extra credit and her exams are pretty easy if you do the review and do the homework. she has a pretty thick accent and gets some stuff wrong in lectures and its kinda a yapfest.
She's ok. Sometimes what she's explaining isn't very clear if you don't already know what she's doing. Studied myself for most of it. Most exams are similar to past exams, pretty much almost exact copies. Midterm questions are off hw or lecture ws. She seems to care about her students, though. Extra credit/lecture participation available.
Did not attend most lectures and did not like the exam setup.
Dr.Vafa's class is very hard to fail. She's a very generous grader and cares about her students. Personally didn't really find her lectures helpful, but she provides a lot of extra credit during her lectures. One of the easiest classes I've taken at UC Merced.
Horrible prof overall. Overall class, especially lectures, are disorganized and incomprehensible.
graded the final pretty hard, got 0 points because the work I wrote was only what was necessary and didn't wrote out stuff that was zero(eg: KE initial) wasn't exactly what they wanted even though my final answer was correct, reason being "right answer but wrong reasoning". Though lots of extra credit opportunity so not too hard of a class.
lectures are honestly pointless i never showed up, just self study and you'll get a good grade there's lots of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of that by the way she never responds to any emails
Professor Vafa is easy going and wants the best for us regarding pushing us to learn the material through extra credit offered to those who come to lectures. To solidify understanding of the material, I suggest reading the textbook and doing some problems at the end of each chapter in addition to her lectures to score well on the exams.
Her class is helpful so make sure to not skip. Also make sure to do the homework and actually understand it.
Professor was good at giving extra credit and grading was fair and flexible. Lectures quizzes every lecture more than 1. Class material was average difficultly but for me had to go over concept multiple times and professor expects material to be know before class because she only does practice problems rather than teaching.
The midterms have group and individual sections, so the final score is the two combined. Lecture are not mandatory, but there is lecture quiz. Just study on the Lecture notes that she posts most of the test question are gonna be based on that. Also so look at the study guide that she give's memorize them, she will pull questions from that one.
This class is so easy, go to lecture for the extra credit and do all the homework. The professor tries her best to teach the class even when there's no energy. Her accent is a little strong but if you try to follow along you'll understand what she's saying. Good class, there is no way you could fail.
lowkey overall i think this was a pretty dope class! i mean i'm not really the best at physics (practically the worst and like forgot most of the content) but I managed to pass with a B+! the professor herself really knows her way around the topics and stuff but I had issues like keeping track of what she was saying, besides that it wasn't so bad!
well organized. very helpful and offers extra credit if u attend lectures
Vafapour was amazing in phys 018, I decided to enroll in her 019 course as well! Her lectures are easy to follow. The material is fairly easy to grasp and the homework she assigns helped as well. She's an understanding person and made it clear that she wants the best for us, so don't be afraid to go to her office hours for extra help!
The class is not bad it is a nice entry into physics and professor Vafa is dealing with a class that did not seem to care much so she get a bad reputation. But the professor is actually good and tries to help us. Discussions are very useful as well, and we get extra credit for coming to lecture, and you learn new things in the lecture.
very helpful
She's really nice, some people find it difficult to understand her accent but I thought it was fine to comprehend. She gives lecture quizzes that count as extra credit so you have chances to make up some percentages. For difficulty, I think the material is digestible and she presents it in a clear manner but some of my friends did fail her class.
Her class was easy if you studied the hw and her annotated lecture notes. The midterm questions and multiple-choice questions came from her annotated lectures and her extra credit participation. The same can be said for the final.
She is respectful and nice, her workload is not heavy at all in fact is an amazing study guide for her midterms, she isn't a tough grader she helps you a lot to have extra credit as she gives you some quizzes in class and those help a lot through the semester. Attendance is not mandatory but but it helps a lot if you go.
Most of the quizzes were homework problems, as long as you do the homework and go over the material, you'll do fine in the class.
The professor makes clear the necessary material for your exams. Ensure you spend time studying those topics outside of class as lecture puts this into practice not so much as teaches it for every possible instance
It required some studying, but the professor was fair and there were enough opportunities to increase my grade.
This professor provides detailed information towards the students in clear and specific directions without making things too confusion or otherwise hard to follow. I recommend to incoming students taking physics for guidance if they have any questions about whichever lesson is being taught.
She is a great person but the lectures are very poorly taught and simple subjects are made difficult to understand. Extra credit saves your grade though.
Professor Vafa was great, she was very communicative about what content would be covered in exams and gives all the tools you need to succeed. Go to lecture, make sure to do the lecture worksheets with her, she also gives extra credit questions in class that are totaled up at the end of the semester !
I took Dr. Varfa's class in person during the fall and then again online during the summer, and I absolutely loved both experiences! She's hands down my favorite professor. I was really nervous at first because so many people said Physics was difficult, but Dr. Varfa made everything so clear and easy to undertand. She gives plenty of extra credit!
she is a nice proffesor
Study up or you will fall behind. Allowed us to use 1 page of notes for midterms/exam which was really helpful! Study up for weekly discussion quizzes. The class didn't have much in the grade book so exams and quizzes heavily weigh out your grade.
Professor Vafapour, is a really solid professor. She'll try her best to explain concepts and make sure you understand. But you will definitely need outside practice problems to help understand the class more. The exams were medium difficulty, if you pay attention in class and listen to her you should be able to pass the exams.
Pretty easy class to be honest, just remember to do the lecture attendance quizzes.
This class is easy. Also, she is a good teacher but she has a bit of an accent. Other than that, most students neglect studying and it shows in class which then leads to the entire class being quiet. Overall needs more feedback from students in order to make in feel like a classroom.
Class is easy do EC participation. Thanks.
just go to lecture for extra credit, and you will easy to pass
The professor has a thick accent. However, all her exam questions are from the previous homework assignments and lecture activities; some questions are even word-for-word. On top of that, she gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities. She is very understanding as well.
Awesome professor, probably one of the best in the physics department at UCM. Would highly recommend taking her for phys 008 since its required for most engineering majors. She gives extra credit which helps a lot of people pass the course, and exams aren't even too hard either.
Good professor, good opportunity for extra credit. Exams are based off on homework questions.
I want to start by saying that I had to retake the test because I didn't study and didn't complete the homework. So yes, I had to retake her class and I felt like she improved from when she started as a Professor at UC Merced. She takes criticism well, willing to give lots of extra credit at lecture. Idk about now, but it seemed she wanted to teach
This professor excels at explaining concepts and ensures that everyone understands. In addition, there is a lot of homework assigned, but the professor is also very approachable. Towards the end of the course, it is required to pick a research topic and present it to the class. The professor provides step-by-step instructions to make it excellent.
Professor seems chill
You will learn a lot and get easy A+
Exams are easy but you will not learn anything from her. Hard Accent.
Amazing physics professor. I don't enjoy physics but she made it manageable.
Professor Vafa was a great professor and took her time to teach each concept making sure we understood.
Professor Vafapour's class was easily passable and doable as long as you paid attention and did the homework. The tests were very similar to the quizzes and homework and sometimes she wouldn't change the numbers on the exam which I really loved. She also gave you a cheat sheet and you are allowed to put anything on it which helped a lot.
I had Professor Vafapour Spring of 2024, and my experience was great. Quizzes and exams will be very simple if you just do your homework and study the lecture notes. Professor Vafapour is kind, respectable, and cares for her students.
Favorite class I've ever taken at UC Merced. Vafa is nice and gave lots of extra credit
Quizzes and hw problems are on the tests, so make sure to pay attention to them. Dr Vafapour usually allows for a cheat sheet, so use that cheat sheet well.
Dr. Vafapour, cares about her students she gives a lot of extra credit and her lectures are chill. Her in class quizzes help a lot on the exams so its recommend to attend lecture.
professor vafa's lecture are easy to follow along. the distribution of tests/quizzes/hw assignments is very fair. make sure you do all your assignments including weekly hw on macmillan and lecture participation quizzes and you should be fine. exams are very fairly graded, just make sure you review your hw thoroughly
Able to pass the course easily. But you likely to learn too little if you just copy the hw down on the cheat sheet and apply.
She good at writing out problems on the board and interacting with the lecture class. Make sure to attended office if your confused because the homework and class quiz are similar to the exams and test. You can practice the homework problems for studying. It not a lot of reading but videos to watch if you need background information.
She's pretty good. As long as you do your homework, you should be fine
Take notes. Study lecture notes to do well in discussion quizzes. Study the homework questions, discussion quizzes, and your lecture notes, you should be able to do good on the exams. Gives a equation cheat sheet for BIO Majors, came in clutch.
Proffessor is very caring for her students. The content was a bit difficult but she was always available to ask questions to
Class is pretty easy if you do all the work and learn, not much good professor as well
Lecture is boring, not very fun. Unfortunately most of the material you learn is then. Hard to understand most of the time. If it wasn't for my discussion TA, I wouldn't understand half of the material.
Overall, the class wasn't that bad, as long as you stay on top of the material and put in the effort to study. However, the homework assignments were quite challenging, and the professor could be difficult to understand at times during lectures. That said, she wasn't a bad professor, her lectures were fairly informative and worth attending.
A little disengaging in lecture. Classic slideshow and talk. It's easy to get distracted or doze off, especially if physics isn't your thing and you need to take it as a requirement. Professor is kind, though. Will answer your questions and take the time to repeat herself.
The professor's lectures are sometimes difficult to follow, especially when she assumes you remember all prior topics and automatically builds with new content. She also sometimes overcomplicates some concepts. But what's nice is that the exams are based on the homework assignments, you will likely have already seen many of the questions.
This professor was amazing! Definitely would take again if the opportunity arises. Lectures are very straightforward. Discussions are helpful and TA's were supportive and wanted to give every-chance for students to learn. The professor was very clear about the homework, exams and quizes and nothing note worthy that would make it difficult.
Professor Vafa was understanding & respectfully to all students. Even the TA were excellent, she was always available to help if you had any questions. My major worry, was that LP would frequently give questions to us in class, and sometimes the correct response would be incorrect. She tried her best to correct this, but it wasn't always the case.
She is a good professor that answers questions, is very nice and tries her best to help.
She was overall a great professor with a straightforward grading criteria and nothing too much. The lab notebook work is 80% of ur grade and pre lab is 20%. Ofc the lab notebooks are time consuming but if you pay attention and do ur work ahead of time it's an easy A. She's also very flexible with extensions and understanding if you just talk to her
Lectures are near impossible to keep up with let alone learn from, added on the fact that there are 3+ lecture participation quizzes during each lecture. Each of these is graded the same as a discussion quiz making it so if you do poorly on the lecture participation your grade drops. Discussions are good though.
You will struggle to understand in the lectures primarily because you are expected to learn from a textbook before lecture. The textbook used is terrible to learn from. She will do her best to teach you and curve grades as necessary to make sure an acceptable number of students pass. My TA got me through this course.
If you're worried about a bad teacher, Professor Vafa's not one of them. The class is very structured and a majority of it depends on you showing up and doing the work you need to do. Go to discussions, go to lecture, and pay attention. If you fail, it's your fault. She's a great professor and enjoys talking with/helping students.
Definitely not a bad professor, she is nice and does her best to help + grading isn't too harsh. But also not a great professor, lectures feel very rushed and difficult to understand, there are lots of in-lecture participation quizzes (graded) and you need to stay on top of HW and pre-lecture assignments constantly making the course a lot of work.
Somewhat difficult to follow lectures, but very generous grading. Studying is likely needed, but if grasping physics topics isn't hard for you this class is very easy.
Professor is a great person, understanding and all the above! The only thing that I didn't like is the over explanation on everything. At times it would be so much over explaining on equations to the point where you don't know when the problem starts or finishes.
She has a lot of chances to pass.
sszzggggvswvvwvw cwvwvw
The lab were ok the Ta's are the ones that do all the work and my Ta was really nice they just help with instructions and that's about it the lab notebook were really hard to do sometimes and they are really harsh graters so you better do good on them.
Honestly thought I was going to get a b until she started dropping things. I ended up with a high a in the class. Just do well on exams and do most of the assignments and you're set. Also pay attention during lectures because there will be lecture participation quizzes. Only thing that was lacking was like, practical demonstrations or something
The professor was really great, she did a good job going through each lecture problem. One thing I would say is she goes through each problem fast which is a little difficult to keep up so I would advise paying extra attention. It was fun taking her class.
I could not get a hold of her through email for months, she just responded once and then legit ghosted me💀. Material was alright but you have to get it 100% right the first time
This is for physics 009L but it's alright. Grading was light and labs were relatively easy. I wish instructions were more clear for most labs. Throw on music, do lab report it takes like 1 and a half hours but you'll get an A easily
