One the hardest teachers out there!
Egotistical. Contemptuous toward students. Lectured for days on a confusing problem and didn't get right answer. Lab manual, which he wrote, is completely unreadable (is it in English?) Just as confusing during office hours.
Didn't even take HIS class, but if his lab manual is any indication then he has got to be the worst teacher in HISTORY!
Worst Teacher Ever
Don't even bother wasting time in his class if you know Calculus amazingly well. He uses Calculus awkwardly and in a pre-req of calc I uses Calc III to get the solution of the problem. Definately one of the worst professors in CSULB.
I second the Lab Manual remark. WORST LAB MANUAL EVARRRR!! Don't even know what language it's in!!
Just terrible. Does not explain concepts with any type of clarity or simplification. Don’t bother taken his class.

remember a beautiful mind? you know the scene where nash has to teach a class and he says "this class will be a waste of your and more importantly MY time"
This guy has to be the worst teacher I have ever taken. The couple days of class there are like 50 students... after those 2 days... literally 15 people left in the class... I was one of the ones who left.
Cocky, arrogant, confusing & unclear. 1st day of class he bragged that OVER 75% of us would not pass his class. Teaches w/ first draft manual HE wrote, no book! Manual has MANY mistakes and is hard to understand. Prereq is calc 1 yet calc 2&3 will be used
prereq is calculus 1, yet parametric equations, differential equations and integrals involving trig substitutions are used on the very first lab. hlousek seems very proud about his extremely high drop/fail rate. very hard to learn, or pass for that matter
Quite possibly the worst professor in the world. Don't take him unless you'd like to start a track record for F's. He knows what he's talking about, but nobody else does.
This guy needs to get fired.
Despite of other ratings, i found this teacher very helpful, willing to help others. Gave exams from the book examples. A lot of easy points like attendance, homework etc.
He is a very hard professor but if you go to his office hours he will help you. if you have to take him practice all the exmaples in his book.
He has got to be the worst teacher on this campus. Those who want to pass physics 151, do not register for this guy's class.
Those who gave Dr. Hlousek a poor rating are students who should change their majors to communications. DON'T TAKE PHYSICS UNLESS YOU WANT TO WORK!! Dr. H. is a GREAT teacher, is always available during office hours, and helps during office hours greatly. I am glad I took him. He is excellent!
this is the hardest class i have ever taken in my life!. DR. H doesnt lecture very well. the only way to pass is to have a good study group and make sure you go into his office hours to get help on your own. going to lecture is a waste of time. he is very full of himself although in a one on one off
Very HARD, CAN NOT TEACH,ONE OF WORST TEACHER.
Didn't learn a thing but still passed the class....how is that possible???
Ok teacher but just show up to class just to know what he went over. Buy yourself any physics book and study on your own.
Arrogant; he hates undergraduates, and prefers teaching grad students. He's said as much. That attitude comes out in the class.
Didn't learn a thing but still passed with an A. because we graded our own papers.
Likes to help students but presents too much math and not enough physics. The class went too slow for my liking and we didn't get to relativity and quantum mechanics which I had hoped to learn more about. I wasn't too impressed with this class.
WORST TEACHER EVER! PERIOD. I didn't learn a thing from him, just read the book and you'll learn more from it.
Worst Teacher ever! Confusing and his writing is horrible. Seriously do not take him!
Avoid this teacher if you can. His lectures are difficult to follow - not benneficial, just read book. Does not give any clear direction on what will be quized or tested - makes studying frustrating. Assigns little homework but dont be fooled, the assigned problems usually arn't similar to anything on the test. Gives little or no partial credit
I took him for summer, phys 100A, horrible teacher. the subject is hard but he makes it worse by not explaining well. Going to his office hours does not help either.
AVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Horrible teacher. Very unreasonable. Gave us 30 question homework assignments and taught us none of it. Thank god for tutoring in the Horn Center. Gave us less than a weeks notice for all of our midterms. Normally teaches quantum physics so why was he teaching a beginning physics class?! Horrible.
I know people really don't like him but he's easy to deal with. e-mail him questions you have and use his office hours for help and he will definitely try to help you. He's extremely lenient on the hw and actually extended every single hw assignment so I could finish. You need to show you care, not just complain to him, and he'll listen.
This teacher thinks this class is taken by senior level physics major even though its a 100 class. Has an attitude treating the students like they're all stupid. The guy is super smart but he will not accept that most of us are seeing physics for the first time. He needs to reformat his class so that the basic concept or theory is understtod. Not t
This teacher thinks this class is taken by senior level physics major even though its a 100 class. Has an attitude treating the students like they're all stupid. AVOID this teacher or you will likely lower your GPA for all your classes. Completely unreasonable on the tests and homework. He's just to smart for his own good.
i have never written on or used rmp.com before. i went on this website solely to write that dr. hlousek should either be fired or no longer teach phys 100A. he is unclear, unreasonable about assignments, picks on students who struggle (if you are confused and give any hint of it he treats you like a reject), and he does not care if you pass. avoid.
I can't believe I paid this teacher to teach me. By far the worst teacher I have ever had! He races through the material and gets mad if you are not immediately elightened. This guy should be banned from teaching. He will make you feel like you don't belong in a university. I have a 3.3 gpa in engineering with over 150 units. This is my first D!
Had him for a summer course. the WORST teacher ive ever had! fyi, attending class is pointless. all he does is go over some problems from the book--absolutely no teaching! study on your own and do well on hw and lab! those will boost your grade! no extra credit given.
So... I basically taught myself physics. KNOW HOW TO DO HOMEWORK, shows up on online exams. Not the greatest teacher, but very helpful to me during office hours.. I used them A LOT. It's a ton of work, but hmw completely boosts your grade so get help and do it - Overall, hard class especially if you're not a self-learner...
take him if you are already good with physics
He dives right into the material expecting you to already know EVERYTHING (which means if you can't teach yourself, then you might have a hard time keeping up).
This is my first time rating a professor, and ill be honest, his class was useless. I work very hard in my classes and study intensely, but i have to save, Hlousek was the worst teacher i have ever had! He lectures on the board about the topic from the text, then assigns online hw (which you will want to do in a group, trust me). Avoid him!
I had physics classes in high school and excelled, but in this class you are on your own!! Not only is Mr. Hlousek creepy looking and creepy acting (especially around young females like me--RUN!!!), but you can treat this as a do-it-yourself class. I started sitting in the back of the class because he looked so stalkerish at me and other females.
Focuses a lot on theory, and it is difficult to learn in class. He was very helpful in office hours if you need help though. And overall, getting an A is not hard, you just might not understand anything at the end of the class.
Bad. Just bad. horrible. if you can't teach yourself, don't take him. just really really bad. everything's online: homework/exams. in class, he DERIVES the equations you need, but doesn't tell you how to use them, read, or relate problems AT ALL. goes over material at lightning speed...just bad. uh. take him if you already know physics.
He never seemed to know what he was doing during lecture. He definitely know what he's talking about but he has no idea how to teach students who have never taken physics before. The only reason I did well in this class is because I read the textbook an dalways did my homework.
He needs to be fired.
I know this teacher is smart. Unfortunately, it does no good when he can't explain it. What a terrible teacher! He is the worst teacher I have had and I have over 200 units taken with a strong B average. The HW does not match the final! It will mess you up!
You will have to read the textbook cover to cover. You must know the material before class because you will not learn it from him. He's not a bad guy, but he has no idea how to teach. On the plus side, his exams are worth a very small percent of your total grade, including the final. Exam questions are from the book, but the difficult ones.
his lectures are so useless and the exams are harder than any of the homework problems! every class average for the exams were below 20% and he wouldnt even curve it! he needs to be fired already. if you take him be prepared to read all of the textbook if you want to learn about physics
People need to stop bad mouthing him. I was a HS junior, taking AP Physics C (equivalent to a college physics 200 class, due to use of calc for equation derivation). He set time aside to help me understand the questions, and taught me the ways to actually understand the material. Their is no single formula or right wayto approach physics, just door
I basically have to teach myself every topic/subject from examples in the book and on Wiley. We're 1/4 through the semester and he has done a grand total of 3 examples so far. All he needs to do is practice problems and work them out... its really not that difficult. I'm banking on other people doing bad so that he'll curve the final grade.
The first 2 weeks of class he did not teach anything from the book. You need to read the book and completely understand it before going to class. Usually he will only 1 or 2 very difficult and confusing problems. His exams are very difficult. I went to his office hours once and he was very rude to me. He also refused to let me drop the class.
We do about a problem a day in his class. That is it. You will NEED to read the book to survive because it is all self taught in this class. Exams are very hard, and graded strictly based on how well you know physics jargon. Even though you are new to it. Has a habit of raising his voice often and class rarely responds to questions.
This teacher is beyond terrible. Initially I go in a class open minded but as much as I tried to like him as a teacher, it didn't happen. He is too smart to be teaching intro to Physics which is why he gets mad if you don't understand a topic and assumes you should know all these formulas. How I survived and passed? I don't even know.
He should not be a Physics 100a teacher. He gets mad at you if you don't know what he's talking about even if he hasn't even taught you about it. His lectures are pointless and only focus on how the formulas originated. His tests are very hard and he never tells you what to study. The only time you will understand him is if you go to his office hrs
Worst person to have for Physics. He didn't teach a darn thing, probably the worst professor I've ever had. During lectures we just do problems and he doesn't explain the values or go into detail of the problems. Also, many times he didn't even give the answer to the problems. I failed everything but got a B bc of lab and a B on the final luckily.
I took 2 years of physics in highschool including AP, and barely passed this class with a B. Here's the shakedown, I got As on all my exams but the class assign. and quizzes/recipes brought me down to a 81%. Avoid at all costs
I got yelled at because I told him it was Centrifugal force instead if centripetal force.Class was hard,he didn't really help much unless you spoke up in class,so if ur stuck in this class, sit in the front.Exams are easy but the material is not. Best way to pass this class is to already know physics = ]
Very hard class. He is not organized and not helpful at all. He expects you to know everything even though he doesn't teach much. Exams consists of ONLY 3-5 problems which makes it hard to get a good grade because if you miss one, you're down to B! Avoid taking this class if you could!
Dr. Hlousek is a very understanding professor. He really cares about his students and is always willing to help if you go to his office hours. Physics is a tough subject, and Hlosuek tries his best to help his students
Worst professor I've ever had in my entire life. Did not once teach the class physics. He would just go in front of the class, throw a problem at us with incredibly vague criteria like "Draw a fountain," and 10 minutes later, ask "Are you done?" Rude to students, puts them on blast for asking questions. Rude during office hours. Avoid at all costs.
this professor is smart, maybe too smart for this class,i dont think he should be teaching phys 100a.Exams were hard, and they usually consist of 4 questions.also, you never know what to expect on exams.took class over summer,so i feel that he should have been more lenient also because some student are only taking it for a GE.hope i pass!btw,no curve!
Worst professor I have ever had. He did but two in class problems the entire semester. He just talked in front of the class, didn't really teach...
Professor Hlousek is the most disrespectful professors I''ve ever came across. I went to his office hours and he was unable to answer my questions in a civilized way. He stared at his computer for the short two minutes I was in his office. After the first exam he criticized us and walked out for two minutes to try and scare us off. Weirdo
Weekly routine: Shows up 10-15 minutes late, immediately starts lecturing about Physics, but nothing that has to do with relative course material, nor material that will be on the test First Midterm included equationsconcepts that he had never spoken of. Learn material ahead of time, read book early, the day webassign posts, understand it all.
lol no. just no.
Worst professor ever, he's lectures don't prepare you for neither the exam nor the web assign homework. He's rude, arrives late to class, and he gets really upset when our exam scores. He's is very smart, knows his physics. however teaching wasn't meant for him. Avoid this class unless you're a physics genius.
Took him for physics. Very hard. He was late to class constantly. Lecture would consist of him doing one problem on the board per day. The tests were extremely random questions. Final was extremely hard. Got lucky with guessing and got an A, but i felt like i learned nothing.
Avoid his class. He's very smart but some people are not good at teaching. The subject is already tough as it is. 3 exams 2 quizzes. Lectures don't prepare you AT ALL for them. Rely on your web assign and the solutions manual to prepare for exams. He's also rude and makes you feel stupid if you answer one of his questions incorrectly.
HAHA. This man cannot teach. Test are completely random questions, while class time is spent going over general things we should be learning and does about one problem per class. No one shows up to class because you don't learn anything. You will learn your physics from the group online homework. He may as well not even exist.
Horrible subject, horrible professor, horrible everything. Stay away. Assignments are not graded in a timely manner, but that's the grader's fault. Never take this professor. If you don't go to class and read the book instead you're better off. Exams are problems from webassign, this guy is smart, a joke of a professor and a joke of a class.
Terrible, absolutely terrible. The reviews of 10 years ago are still relevant to this day. You would think that this guy would change up his style of teaching, but obviously not. Do not take, even if it means having to take it next semester. You have been warned
Horrible teacher, he does not help you learn anything and expects you to learn everything out of the book. Even when you try to ask him questions in class, he will end up confusing you by the way he words things and does not fully explain them. AVOID HIM! Do whatever you can to not take him!
This class was not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. The beginning of the semester was tough, but once you learn how the class is graded, you accommodate. He expects you to read the material before class, class is used to reinforce ideas and clear up misconceptions. He is rude sometimes. He's not as bad as the reviews make him out though.
He expects you to learn from the book, lectures are mostly an opportunity to gain insight on the topics. I don't recommend skipping classes. Most importantly, be cautious of due dates on the syllabus and social site, the first exam caught many off guard. Good communication, not a class to slack off on at all.
I understand its college, but this professor is teaching simple topics at a much advanced level. Don't expect him to go over anything on the exam. He's a JOKE for a professor. Don't get me wrong the guy is smart, but that doesn't make him a good professor. He gets lost in his own world and mumbles away in depth at topics not even addressed on test.
The reviews are in fact true, this guy is terrible. I went to every lecture and ended up being even more confused about the subject. We were two chapters behind the other class and he just ended up skipping them in order to catch up. A lot of students had errors for their final grade. It just seemed like he didn't care about the class.
Very confusing professor, not sure why he went into teaching. He may try to help you understand and can be a nice guy if you show you put an effort, but his explanations are terrible and he wont tell you what will be on the test.
Oh man, what a great professor. I learned so much from this guy! And his overall looks and stature are absolutely stunning. I wish professor Hlousek taught all my classes. He's the best ever. I caught him smoking a cigarette and that was a bit of a turn off, but still a super teacher. You should definitely take him!
This is awful, he doesn't lecture about physics, he just has you try to do things without explaining at all.
He definitely doesn't lecture like most people are used to so be ready to learn a little on your own. Overall I thought it was pretty easy once I figured him out. I took it in the summer & the tests were only 4 questions long but almost all of the questions came from the group hw or extra online book problems. Just do a bunch of practice problems
He is very rude to his students. Does not tell you what the exams will be on. Grading material is unclear. All class assignments are done through an online website that is difficult to use. He gives EC quizzes because the class does poorly on exams, usually within the next two lectures. Exams are not multiple choice, usually only had 4 questions.
Best teacher but trust me you have to work hard to earn an A, i learned a lot from his class and his exams weren't that hard. i suggest you taking this teach. *super thumbs up*
This class was very disorganized. Half of the time, i had no clue what was going on. Thank goodness the textbook was easy to understand.
He lacks organization completely and gives incomplete explanations for example problems. When students ask him questions, he avoids them by restating what he already said or just restates why he was correct, and does not help the student at all. He makes concepts a lot for confusing than they actually are.
This professor is complete nutjob. He is very disorganized and fails to help his students learn the material. The class expectations were a mystery and most people were lost and he didn't care.
Hands down, worst professor I had ever had. After the grades finally came out for the semester, at least 5-10 students grades were miscalculated including mine and caused to fail. His grading criteria is the WORST, with a "miscellaneous" section worth as much as the final which is a complete mystery what goes into that section. If you get him, drop
He makes mistakes on the quizzes(none of the available answer choices are correct) and deducts points from the students, for his mistakes. Do not take this professor. I took it over the summer and I should have just taken it at the college I am enrolled in.
teach yourself and focus on problems he assigns online.
No bueno.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. He bases the grade off of a website that doesn't work and doesn't care if the website glitches on you. If you lose a quiz then he just says "sorry." Please don't take this class. You're better off just learning physics from your dog.
Very rude to his students and doesn't care about anything but his research. Would not take him again. Use the website Koondis a lot. The more you comment on things, the better your grade it. Trust me.
No one knows how his grading works. Has a website that glitches constantly and is broken half the time, but you're forced to use for 90% of the points. His midterms are much harder than the other classes. Lectures solely consist of him deriving an equation, when tests are multiple choice. He's also dismissive of students during office hours. AVOID.
Although this class was dreadful there are ways to pass. If you comment on everything on the Koondis website and make sure that you do well in lab you should be okay. However hes unpredictable and will fail you if he feels like it. The tests are only worth 15% of the grade so there's room to make up for bad tests grades with homework.
You can find a picture of this guy if you look up "incompetence" in a dictionary. He does NOT care about you. Here are SOME things he purposely sets up so that you do, indeed, FAIL. 1) Unannounced everything (hw -- quizzes -- midterm #3) 2) Unfair grading from his glitchy website; he doesn't care; your grade suffers. You have been warned ^_^
Lol so I got an A even after I stopped going to the class after the third week school except during Midterms of course. Such an easy class once you figure out how it all works. Quite unfortunate that most people didn't though. Anyways, if you figure it out it's an Easy A but forget about actually learning anything about Physics. (No textbook)
Great teacher for quantum. Easy to talk to.
He actually cancelled class without prior notification and was later seen at subway around class time.
You will not learn a thing about physics and your grade will suffer due to his website that always crashes when assignments are due. He never states when a quiz is and schedules them randomly on weekends. He refuses to answer students questions. Take the reviews here seriously and avoid. I did not think people were serious and now I regret it.
Take Chuang, at least he cares about his students. This guy is a joke that would rather go smoke cigarettes than fix your grade when it's his fault.
No one knows what is going on in class. He expects us to already know physics. He does not reply to email or care. More than half of the class dropped. On the last day of class, students vented to him and he laughed. He expects you to memorize 20 equations for the final & does not tell you what it will be on. The man doesn't want to be proven wrong
Bullet points are easier. *LOTS of online work, basically a hybrid class?? *I literally learned nothing, I learned more in lab *Everybody was failing *Uses online algorithms to grade *Multiple choice midterms look like HW (which is nice) *Horrible at teaching *Does 1-2 problems per class period and gets no where *Don't bother taking notes, Google
These are the kinds of experiences I go through that make me think about how messed up America's education system is. I thought I could handle a frustrating professor when I read the reviews online, but going through it now, it really ruins your day going to his class. Just bad vibes, he doesn't care/teach. Seriously avoid him if it's possible.
Don't. Just Don't.
He is the Voldemort to my Harry, the Tom to my Jerry, the Frazier to my Ali. If you enjoy mind numbing migraines, then I encourage you to take his class. If you enjoy a life devoid of constant frustration and anxiety, then I would recommend steering away. If you do take his class, I cordially invite you to you into the I hate Koondis Club.
Took his Phys 100A class over the summer to fulfill a prerequisite and learned absolutely nothing. The plus side is that your grade will be fine as long as you do all of the online HW (points heavily heavily weighted on the online system as opposed to exams). Don't take this class if you actually need a solid understanding of physics for the future
By far the worst professor I have ever taken. This professor is should not be allowed to even be teaching here, Glitchy online website where homework is mostly done on. Does not care for students or even their grades. Going to lectures is pointless unless it's for attendance which is logged by an online app using geo-mapping. Avoid at all costs.
I've been in this class for 3 weeks now and this man is easily the most idiotic teacher I have taken in my 8 semesters at CSULB. He will continually contradict himself and you will be very unsure what you need to do. Generally I reference the syllabus under these circumstances however his syllabus also is blank. Do not take this class
This professor is by far the worst professors at CSULB. I got an A. Learned nothing. Do all of the online homework, quizzes, and the Koondis group work well (actually comment and thumbs up other peoples' work)!! Use online help for the online HW and Quizzes. Exams, Quizzes, Notes, HW, and Group Work each 20%. I got F's on exams but can get an A.
No syllabus. No office hours. No exams. Some homework, but not that he even looks at whatever you turn in. Half of the semester was cancelled. I learned almost nothing new. He clearly just cheated his way up professorship to get a high paying job wherein he can do anything (in this case nothing) and not get fired!
took for 100A&B and got A's in both. grading criteria was unclear. typically, there were 2 exams with a few easy questions. make sure to do the practice test! there was no organization for lectures. he usually just asks what questions we have. make sure to nail the examples he provides in class. could be stressful not knowing your grade, but easy A
